New York City Ballet Hires Kennesaw State University Dance Alumna Angelina Pellini joins the prestigious company as Assistant Stage Manager

K

SU Dance alumna Angelina Pellini told her senior seminar class that her ultimate career goal was to be stage manager for a Balanchine-based ballet company. Now, only a short few years later, Pellini is living her wildest dreams as the Assistant Stage Manager for the prestigious New York City Ballet. Pellini explained that she knew she wanted to do something with dance but wasn’t sure that it needed to be performing. She chose Kennesaw State University’s Department of Dance specifically for the Bachelor of Arts in Dance program and the flexibility it afforded her beyond the act of performing itself. “I think students enter a department of dance and pursue a major in dance with probably a narrow understanding of what’s possible for their career,” said Marsha Barsky, chair of the Department of Dance. “Angelina’s success is a testament to what really is possible for a career for dancers.” During her time at KSU, Pellini dove into the world of dance production. She explained that Ivan Pulinkala, KSU’s

provost, senior vice president of Academic Affairs, and the founder of the KSU Dance program, emphasized the value of production through the program’s everyday culture. She explained that Pulinkala “did a really good job of presenting production in a way that made it important and not a career to be cast aside or an undesirable field… He painted it in a way that was always promoting production as a worthy art form”. “Angelina’s strong work ethic and collaborative spirit have no doubt remained Angelina Pellini foundational to her success,” said Pulinkala. “It has been exciting to follow her professional journey at KSU, where she discovered her passion for stage management. KSU Dance is distinguished by Angelina’s outstanding accomplishments.” “This is the pinnacle of ballet for me,” Pellini said. “I closed the fall season with my favorite ballet of all time, and with some of my favorite dancers of all time. I get to watch ballet for a living. There’s nothing better.”

Three Premieres at the Alliance Theatre

T

he second half of Atlanta’s nationally acclaimed Alliance Theatre features an award-winning Atlanta premiere, a world premiere of a reimagined classic, and a world premiere musical. On The Coca-Cola Stage, the Alliance will produce A TALE OF TWO CITIES, February 21 – March 17, 2024. Adapted by Brendan Pelsue, this radical reimagining of Charles Dickens’s classic tale of the French Revolution forces us to ask: am I who I am because of my actions or the circumstances of my birth? Do I control my destiny? And where do we begin if we want to right the wrongs of history? In the Spring, the Alliance will produce the Atlanta premiere of FAT HAM. The deliciously funny, Pulitzer Prize-winning new play will run on the Hertz Stage, April 3 – May 12, 2024. FAT HAM follows the story of Juicy, a queer, Southern college kid, already grappling with some serious questions of identity, when the ghost of his father shows up at their backyard barbecue, demanding that Juicy avenge his murder. The season will close on The CocaCola Stage with the world premiere musical,

THE PREACHER’S WIFE, May 11 – June 9, 2024. Inspired by the beloved blockbuster film, THE PREACHER’S WIFE is a stirring new musical about the power of hope. Featuring an original, gospel-infused score by actor, comedian, and writer Tituss Burgess (TV’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and a book by Burgess and actress, producer, and writer Azie Dungey (TV’s Harlem), THE PREACHER’S WIFE is a can’t-miss theatrical celebration of family and faith. Founded in 1968, the Alliance Theatre is the leading producing theater in the Southeast, reaching more than 165,000 patrons annually. The Alliance has premiered more than 120 productions including nine that have transferred to Broadway. In 2007, the Alliance received the Regional Theatre Tony Award for sustained excellence in programming, education and community engagement. Tickets and season membership packages are available now. The Alliance is located at 1280 Peachtree St. NE, Atlanta, GA 30309. For more information, call 404733-4600 or visit alliancetheatre.org.

tlanta Ballet is set to captivate audiences with two extraordinary performances this spring at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center. Kaleidoscope and Liquid Motion promise an eclectic mix of talent and artistic brilliance pushing the boundaries of conventional ballet. Kaleidoscope, running from March 2224, features a trio of works by renowned and emerging choreographers alike, offering a delightful blend of rhythm, dynamics, and perspectives. Mark Morris first presents the Sandpaper Ballet, a rhythmic and playful masterpiece that seamlessly intertwines music and movement in a refreshing way. This lighthearted ballet makes for a riveting visual and acoustic experience to open the night. In Querencia, a world premiere choreographed by Sergio Masero, the stage comes alive with neoclassical grace. Exploring the profound concept of a safe and beloved place, Masero expands his horizons through this emotional portrayal of love and longing. In Spanish, the word “querencia” itself embodies a sense of belonging and deep cultural connection. The third gem is Corridors, a world premiere by accomplished dancer and freelance choreographer Garrett Smith. At the forefront of the choreographic scene

with Vitacca Ballet’s Somewhat Closer and Netflix’s Tiny Pretty Things, Smith will inspire with his innovative and artistic point of view. Afterwards, the Atlanta Ballet will continue its enchanting journey with Liquid Motion from May 10-12. This performance showcases two groundbreaking works by the next generation of choreographers, Claudia Schreier and Juliano Nuñes. Schreier, the acclaimed Choreographer-in-Residence, presents a groundbreaking ballet set to awardwinning jazz musician Wynton Marsalis’s “The Jungle (Symphony No. 4).” This piece takes the audience on a journey through musicality and inventive movement, reflecting the complexities of modern city life. Joining Schreier is renowned Brazilian artist Juliano Nuñes, recognized as one of the world’s most sought-after young choreographers. Nuñes brings his distinctive movement vocabulary to Atlanta Ballet in an exciting new commission, promising an invigorating perspective that adds another layer of excitement to the season finale. This spring, the stage is set for enjoying the diversity and artistry within the world of ballet. Your night to witness the magic of dance in its most dynamic form awaits at atlantaballet.com.

A

tlanta Master Chorale’s spring concerts are packed with varied choral repertoire spanning many centuries, styles, themes, and genres. Join us at the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts on the campus of Emory University for these exciting upcoming programs. Our March concert, Same Light, Different Lanterns: Sacred Music from Around the World, will be on Friday, March 15 and Saturday, March 16 at 8 p.m. This timely concert features Indian-American composer Reena Esmail’s This Love Between Us: Prayers for Unity, and Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, drawing on themes Reena Esmail, photo by of loving-kindness, Rachel Garcia and peace across cultural and religious traditions. Esmail’s This Love Between Us: Prayers for Unity is made up of seven movements that juxtapose the words of seven major religious traditions of India (Buddhism, Sikhism, Christianity, Zoroastrianism, Hinduism, Jainism, and Islam). The text focuses on how each of these traditions approaches the topic of unity, brotherhood, and being kind to one

another. Each movement also unites Indian and Western classical styles, utilizing both an orchestra and two traditional Indian instruments, the tabla and sitar. Bernstein’s great Chichester Psalms, sung in Hebrew, is tuneful, tonal, and contemporary, featuring modal melodies, and unusual meters. Bernstein implicitly issues a plea for peace by combining Hebrew language with Christian choral tradition. The closing text is “behold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity”. Our season finale concert program, A Cappella Soundscapes, will feature only a capLeonard Bernstein, photo pellla selections — by Susesch Bayat; Courtesy choral music in its of Deutsche Grammophone purest form, unaccompanied by any instrument. D

iscover Oglethorpe University’s thriving arts community! Here, it’s all about the experience — for our students and our audiences. Conant Performing Arts Center, the university’s premier venue, stages both student and professional theatre productions and music performances throughout the year. The new year is set to begin with an explosion of glitter and joy. Premiering Feb. 17 at Oglethorpe, “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” is a bombastic dance musical about a young teenager who must overcome his naysayers to become a fabulous drag queen. In this joyous dance musical — recently adapted into an Amazon Prime original movie — working class teenager Jamie dreams of being a celebrated performer. However, in his working-class town where the status quo is strictly enforced, his aspirations are stymied by bullies and bigots, including his own father. In this story of self-discovery, acceptance, and wild, ambitious authenticity, “Jamie” is a dazzlingly entertaining journey. This exciting endeavor marks the third consecutive year of collaboration between Oglethorpe University and the Atlantabased theater company Actor’s Express. “Jamie” follows two immensely successful

20

productions of “Heathers: The Musical” and “Urinetown,” which featured both professional and student actors performing together on the Conant stage. With this collaboration, Oglethorpe students are not only given the chance to work alongside seasoned actors, directors, and producers, but they also perform on their own campus — a remarkable experience that bridges the gap between academia and the professional world. “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” is directed by Freddie Ashley, who previously worked with OU Theatre to direct last year’s hit co-production of “Urinetown,” which ArtsATL called “Atlanta’s first truly must-see, 10-out-of-10 production of 2023.” Tickets for “Jamie” are on sale now at actors-express.com. The Oglethorpe University Museum of Art, located in historic Lowry Hall, hosts free exhibitions throughout the year, plus concerts, lectures and workshops. “Contrapunto: Works by a Contemporary Artist Collective” is on view Feb. 16 through May 19. First called “The Gwinnett Festival Singers,” the Norcrossbased group augmented its primary identity as a choir specializing in sacred a cappella works with annual performances of a major choral-orchestral masterwork by the greatest composers in history. Founder William O. Baker, director of the ensemble for its first 30 seasons, was quoted in an interview in the late 1980s: “It is my hope and intention that the Festival Singers will bring the greatest contributions of our Western musical traditions to Atlanta audiences.” That dream has been fulfilled season after season. When Music Director Lynn Swanson took charge of the ensemble in 2015, she chose Bach’s Mass in B minor as her first masterwork with the Festival Singers. The concert was a critical success, continuing the Festival Singers’ heritage as one of the South’s most ambitious performing ensembles. The Festival Singers were called “William Baker Festival Singers Atlanta” for 17 seasons before taking the name New South Festival Singers, honoring Henry W.

Grady’s homage to Atlanta’s historic spirit of tolerance and enterprise. As New South Festival Singers, the Atlanta-based choir’s reputation continues to grow. Past masterworks concerts have included performances of Bach’s St. John Passion, Magnificat, Christ lag in todesbanden, Wachet auf, and many others; Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem in Spivey Hall, Mozart’s Requiem, Great Mass in C minor, and Coronation Mass; Stravinsky’s Mass and Symphony of Psalms; Buxtehude’s Jesu Membra Nostri, Bloch’s Avodath Hokodesh, and a premier of William Dreyfoos’ Songs of the Holocaust, broadcast on NPR’s Performance Today. The Festival Singers’ recording of the Requiem of John Rutter was lauded in The American Record Guide. In 2005, the annual masterworks concert took the name “The Andrew Cain Masterworks Concert” in memory of a devoted member who had a particular affection for the annual event. The 2024 concert will feature Bernstein’s ebullient Chichester Psalms. Sunday, March 24, 2024, 4 p.m., at The Church at St. John, 550 Mt. Paran Road, Atlanta. Tickets are available at www.FestivalSingers.org/concerts.

Atlanta Shakespeare Company Gears Up for a Full Summer of Camps for Students

he motto of the Education branch of the Atlanta Shakespeare Company is “Making the world safe through iambic pentameter,” and their programming throughout the year proves that. The Department reaches over 30,000 students annually from all over Georgia and the Southeast. In addition to ongoing student matinee performances, touring shows, play shops and full residencies at schools, and homeschool programs, the Department provides a wide variety of summer camps for kids of all stages of creative development and exploration. For elementary-aged students, there are four different kinds of camps. Superheroes Summer Camp explores two different Shakespeare plays, culminating in a performance showcase of scenes and monologues from both scripts. Camp experiences include theatre- related arts & crafts, recess, theatre games, music, dance, introductory stage combat and a pizza party! Musical Theatre Camp explores Shakespeare’s language and characters through the lens of song and dance. Teaching artists create a showcase script of one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays, infusing larger-than-life opportunities for kids to shine and perform a combination of classic Shakespeare Tavern music, musical theatre standards, and pop music hits.

Stage Combat Camp activities include instruction on safe stage combat practices, creating swords, recess, theatre games, and rehearsing a showcase script for performance. During one of their most popular camps, students explore the wild and wacky world of Improv comedy! Daily camp activities include instruction on the “rules” of improv, learning theatre games for performance, arts & crafts, daily recess and practicing working as an ensemble to bring a live, unscripted performance to life! For the more dedicated high school student, there’s Shakespeare Intensive for Teens, a four-week, audition-based, professional-style training program. During SIT, students are trained in the performance and instruction of Shakespeare in classes, Shakespeare text work, voice and movement techniques, stage combat, madrigal, and Renaissance dance. Informed by what they learn in classes, students rehearse and perform a full-length play from the Shakespeare canon. The fast rehearsal process, similar to that employed by ASC’s professional actors, gives students the skills to make quick, bold acting choices and stretch their creative wings. Camp registration is open, let’s all make the world safer through iambic pentameter! www.shakespearetavern.com/education.
