try’s first-ever Regional Ballet Festival, hosted by Atlanta Civic Ballet.. Participating companies included the Atlanta Civic Ballet, Southern Ballet of Atlanta, Birmingham Civic Ballet, Tampa Civic Ballet, Ballet Guild of Greater Miami, Charlotte Ballet and Ogilvie Concert Ballet of Jacksonville.

The festival’s success led to the creation of the country’s first regional ballet organization, the Southeastern Regional Ballet Association (SERBA). Similar geographic associations were soon formed throughout the country to strengthen educational and performance opportunities for local choreographers, dancers and directors. In 1963, Alexander co-founded the National Association for Regional Ballet (NARB) to meet the needs of its member companies. Today, Regional Dance America continues the important work of NARB to elevate the future of dance in America.

At NARB’s 25th Anniversary Celebration, Alexander said, “Regional ballet was born of idealistic thinking, but there is nothing more realistic than the contribution idealistic thinkers can make. They knew that one way to widen America’s dance horizon was to give more opportunities to more people in more communities to discover the magic that resides in this great art of dance — a magic that can enrich, ennoble and make more significant the greatest of the arts — the art of living.”

T

here are numerous dance performance, choreography and educational opportunities available today throughout Greater Atlanta, but this was not always the case. In the early days of American theater, most successful dance professionals lived in New York City or other major metropolitan areas.

The late Dorothy Alexander broke this geographic stereotype when she opened a dance school in her hometown of Atlanta in 1922, and founded the city’s first professional ballet company seven years later. The company was originally called Dorothy Alexander Concert Group, then renamed Atlanta Civic Ballet, and is now Atlanta Ballet.

She knew there were dance companies existing outside of New York, as she said, “in isolated spots throughout the country, functioning in a vacuum and often dismissed as ‘dance in the boondocks’”. When her friend, Anatole Chujoy, publisher of Dance News, told her in 1955 that he had recently attended a regional dance festival in Canada, she decided to duplicate the event in the U.S. Alexander reached out to her dance colleagues, including Southern Ballet cofounders Pittman Corry and Karen Conrad, who enthusiastically embraced the idea, as did other Southeastern dance company directors. In 1956, Atlanta Mayor William B. Hartsfield welcomed audiences to the coun-

has gone through both French and Russian translations over the years.

After a young peasant girl named Giselle is deceived by her true love, Albrecht, she falls into a fit of despair and dies of a broken heart. A woman scorned, she is destined to rise from the grave with the vengeful otherworldly beauties known as the Willis, entrapping men who unwittingly cross their paths. At once beguiling and maleficent, the Willis capture Albrecht and condemn him to dance until his death, but the power of Giselle’s enduring love protects him and ultimately sets them both free.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s Extraordinary Artistry Returns to the Fox Theatre Stage February 10-13

A

lvin Ailey American Dance Theater returns to the Fabulous Fox Theatre February 10-13 for five performances during Black History Month, featuring Ailey’s extraordinary dancers in a season celebrating the 50th anniversary of Alvin Ailey’s beloved Cry and a decade of Artistic Director Robert Battle’s leadership. “Alvin Ailey’s vision provided the opportunity for generations of artists to use dance to inspire, unite and enlighten,” stated Robert Battle. “We are excited to be returning to our Atlanta home at the Fabulous Fox Theatre to share the artistry that renews our spirit of courage, hope, and joy.”

The curtain goes up on Thursday, February 10th with WSB-TV’s Family 2 Family Night and a Battle 10th Anniversary program, which repeats on Sunday matinee. Offering a smorgasbord of seven dynamic works by visionary Artistic Director Robert Battle, it includes the unveiling of his world premiere, For Four, set to a delicious Wynton Marsalis jazz score written in 4/4 time.

Ailey on his stunning muse, Judith Jamison, Cry was an instant sensation when it debuted in 1971 and went on to become an enduring work of American art.

Saturday evening is an encore of hiphop innovator Rennie Harris’ acclaimed Lazarus. The creation of this powerful ensemble work, inspired by the life and legacy of Alvin Ailey, is featured in the must-see AILEY documentary streaming for free through February 11th on PBS. Along with a wide variety of exciting repertory, the memorable finale of all programs will be Alvin Ailey’s American masterpiece Revelations, acclaimed for sending hearts soaring and lifting audiences to their feet with powerful storytelling and soul-stirring music, evoking timeless themes of determination, hope, and transcendence.

he Atlanta Opera’s production of Cabaret is adapted from 1998 Broadway revival that ran for more than 2,377 performances at Studio 54 in New York. Zvulun will direct and James Lowe, a leading conductor of opera and music theater, will conduct members of The Atlanta Opera Orchestra. Awardwinning set designer Alexander Dodge will transform The Atlanta Opera’s Big Tent into the Kit Kat Klub, a decadent cabaret where singer Sally Bowles entertained Berlin’s elite in the 1930s. Erik Teague, the designer responsible for the whimsical costumes from this spring’s production of Threepenny Opera, will handle the costumes.

A versatile singing actor equally capable in opera houses and Broadway, Curt Olds will sing the role of the flamboyant Emcee. He has been seen in productions ranging from Don Pasquale and The Magic Flute to musicals such as Sondheim’s A Little Night Music, The Threepenny Opera, and Broadway’s Riverdance. Hailed by Opera News as “A wonderful singing actor, as adept in pointing dialogue as in phrasing

song,” Olds most recently performed the role of Monsieur Andre in the world tour of Phantom of The Opera.

Actor and tenor Anthony Luciura will sing the role of Herr Schultz, the elderly fruit shop owner. With more than 800 performances at the Metropolitan Opera, Luciura has taken his operatic skills around the world singing supporting roles in many of the best-known operas in the canon including The Marriage of Figaro, The Magic Flute, Carmen, Turandot and Falstaff.

From 2010 to 2013 he was seen in the HBO television series Boardwalk Empire as butler Eddie Kessler.

The Atlanta Opera will present Cabaret on June 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 12 (matinee), 16, 17, 18, 19 (matinee). Tickets for Cabaret start at $50. he Alliance Theatre will continue its 53rd season this winter on the Coca-Cola Stage. he Rialto Center for the Arts at Georgia State University has presented the best in contemporary dance for over 20 years. This season offers two diverse dance performances: Syncopated Ladies: Live and A.I.M by Kyle Abraham.

Syncopated Ladies, an all-female tap dance band, was founded by Emmynominated choreographer Chloe Arnold, who was discovered by renowned choreographer Debbie Allen. Arnold’s choreography has been featured on hit television shows including “So You Think You Can Dance,” “Good Morning America,” “The Ellen Show,” “The Talk” and over 30 episodes of “The Late Show with James Corden.”

Syncopated Ladies: Live is an electrifying show featuring a band of critically acclaimed artists performing today’s cutting-edge music—from Pop to Hip-Hop to Salsa, and even a couple of tear-jerking ballads. The Rialto presents Syncopated Ladies: Live on March 3, in partnership with The Black Leadership AIDS Crisis Coalition powered by AIDS Healthcare Foundation.

Ballethnic Dance Company is Making Moves and Getting Noticed in Major Arenas

allethnic Dance Company will receive one of six Fellowships in 2022 from Dance/USA, the national service organization for professional dance for Archiving and Preservation.

Ballethnic is one of six National Companies to be matched with a master’s degree student in library and information sciences and related fields. The project will document the archives of Urban Nutcracker. Ballethnic Cofounder Waverly T. Lucas is eternally grateful as this is a project that he has been embarking on as he worked on research for his master’s thesis. He states, “what a gift to document the work that started our deep community engagement.” The theme of this round of Fellowships, generously supported by funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, is Preserving Cultural Heritage, Supporting Communities.

Tremendous performance opportunities are unveiling as Ballethnic, in association with the Alliance Theatre, prepares for its debut on the Coca-Coca stage with its signature ballet The Leopard Tale. Catch the Leopard April 8 - 10.

Ballethnic will also make its debut

performance at The Kennedy Center June 14 -19. Ballethnic will perform as part of Reframing The Narrative with Dance Theatre of Harlem and Collage Dance Collective. This is a special honor, as the directors of these companies danced during the leadership of Arthur Mitchell. Ballethnic will perform excerpts of act I from The Leopard Tale and its spiritual ballet Sanctity, both ballets are choreographed by Ballethnic Cofounder Waverly Lucas. The original music score of The Leopard Tale by L. Gerard Reid will be featured. The performance will feature veteran dancers Karla Tyson and Calvin Gentry in the Leopard Tale Mating Dance.

The persistence of Ballethnic founders is being recognized, and they are grateful to continue the work that has influenced a generation of dancers, especially Black ballet dancers and entrepreneurs. They are especially grateful for The Chestnut Family Foundation that provided transformational funding when the pandemic hit, which enabled the company to survive the downturn and be afforded these incredible opportunities.

KSU Department of Dance to Host Montreal-based Company Tentacle Tribe Performance of “Ghost” has elements of contemporary dance, street dance and theatre

ennesaw State University’s Department of Dance will host Montreal-based company Tentacle Tribe in presenting Ghost February 25-26 at 8 p.m. at the Dance Theater on the KSU Marietta campus. Tickets for the in-person performance are $15 to $20.

Ghost combines elements of contemporary dance, street dance, theatre — and even the martial arts — in a physical score that echoes the subtle pulse of respiration. The invigorating power of the breath, and its circulation in the organism, are embodied and magnified by this energetic, architectonically rich dance.

Drawing from their wide scope of dance experience, Tentacle Tribe’s co-founders Emmanuelle Lê Phan and Elon Höglund are known for creating conceptual hip-hop with a contemporary twist, while intermingling organic influences from earthly creatures.

The Canadian-Swedish alliance (Emmanuelle was raised in Ottawa, Canada, and Elon in Stockholm, Sweden) creatively experiments with intricate partnering, refined musicality, and a saturated dose of physical choreography.

Besides Ghost, their repertoire includes

magnetic pieces such as Body to Body, When They Fall, Nobody Likes a Pixelated Squid, Origami Mami, Threesixnine, and Fractals of You. Although the two performers have worked together since 2005, Tentacle Tribe was formed in 2012 when the duo performed their first collaboration, choreographed for the Cirque Du Soleil stage in Quebec City. This duet was adapted into a short film called Elon & Emmanuelle by director Natalie Galazka. Since then, their work has been shown in over 80 cities worldwide along with workshop outreach and two additional short films.

Marsha Barsky, chair of the Department of Dance, said, “It is a real honor to host Emmanuelle and Elon. What a fabulous opportunity for our students to learn from such a creative, professional duo with a keen intuition on how to keep choreography contemporary and fresh.”

Featuring choreography by Emmanuelle and Elon, Ghost also boasts an original score by Samuel Nadaï. Ghost is scheduled for two in-person performances on Friday and Saturday, February 25-26, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15-$20.

New Georgia Symphony and Girls Who Conduct Women’s Conductor Fellowship Program Continue Throughout Season

W

ith the goal of fostering inclusivity in classical music, the Georgia Symphony Orchestra, in partnership with the Girls Who Conduct organization, launched a unique fellowship program for women and non-binary conductors in September 2021. The program is the brainchild of GSO Music Director and Conductor Timothy Verville and GWC Founder and Artistic Director Chaowen Ting. “The women’s conductor fellowship program is a tribute to Betty Shipman Bennett, the GSO’s first conductor, who led the orchestra from 1955 to 1990,” said Verville. “Betty was a trailblazer in the world of symphonic music, when women conductors were a rarity,” he commented.

Founded in 2020, the aim of the GWC organization is to support womenidentifying and non-binary conductors from all backgrounds and with different experiences who are currently underrepresented in the field of classical music. Since its inception, GWC has mentored 99 conductors from 17 countries.

During each of three weekend residency programs held throughout the GSO’s 2021-2022 concert season, the participants observe GSO rehearsals and performances, while participating in conducting workshops. They also receive mentorship by GWC members and GSO’s music staff, both virtually and in-person.

“The first residency program was a great success, with an engaging conducting workshop with GSO musicians and career development sessions,” said Ting. “As we continue to coach and mentor the fellows, I look forward to seeing what we can achieve in the coming months.”

J

oin Atlanta Master Chorale for our final two concerts as we continue our journey through the heavens.

For our next concert on March 11 & 12, we commissioned the talented Jake Runestad to compose “The Ways of Stars”, a work inspired by the life of female astronomer Maria Mitchell. We were so excited to dig into this piece, and our own singers, who are also women in science, celebrated at the first rehearsal with t-shirts stating: “Who wants to be a princess when you can be a scientist?”

As I watched the eclipse via livestream, I was struck by the metaphors swirling in my brain — of Maria Mitchell, of wonder, of challenges, of the global pandemic, of covered light, and the continued fight for equality”.

We conclude the 2021-2022 season on April 29 & 30 with our finale concert, Immortal Fire, featuring music that inspires us and fires our imagination. The program title comes from Benjamin Britten’s “Hymn to St. Cecilia”, dedicated to the patron saint of music. The concert will also feature works by Dan Forrest, Eric Whitacre, Moses Hogan, William Dawson, Ola Gjeilo, and our own artistic director, Eric Nelson.

This season has been exhilarating with many wonderful concert programs.

Although there continue to be challenges related to the pandemic for all arts organizations, the persistence and talent of our singers and the creative programming by our artistic director have resulted in extraordinary artistry that continues to inspire our audiences.

Alabama Shakespeare Festival Stages World Premiere of Ricardo Khan’s Freedom Rider

T

his April, Alabama Shakespeare Festival proudly presents the world premiere of writer/ director Ricardo Khan’s new play, Freedom Rider. Inspired by real events, the story follows four young students in May 1961 as they board a southbound bus in Washington, DC, to challenge segregated spaces in interstate travel. This powerful play — sometimes funny and ultimately uplifting — celebrates the heroic and watershed journey of these young people.

“It is written by Ricardo Khan, who came [to Montgomery] a few years ago and directed a show called Fly about the Tuskegee airmen,” said Artistic Director Rick Dildine. “He was so inspired by his experience here that he wrote Freedom Rider.”

Montgomery, AL is home to the Freedom Rides Museum, an official destination on the U.S. Civil Rights Trail. The museum is housed in the Greyhound Bus Station where that group of peaceful protestors stepped off their bus on May 20, 1961, to meet only a few reporters waiting to document the event. Within minutes, though, an angry

mob descended upon the students and reporters to viciously attack them.

Congressman John Lewis was one of the original 13 Freedom Riders as a student leader. He was among those brutally beaten that day and was left lying unconscious at the bus station after being hit in the head with a wooden crate.

“These young people were coming from all over the country. So [Kahn] invited five other playwrights to cowrite this play with him,” added Dildine.

“He picked people from different parts of the country who would bring their own experiences, so just like those young people came together that summer, he brought a group of different people together today from different parts of the country to write this play.”

Freedom Rider runs from April 8 – 24 and is recommended for ages 15 and older.

A Black History Celebration featuring the Mojah Technique The Mojah Dance Technique is a codified Modern/African dance form 50 years in the making based on Horton, Dunham, & West African techniques.
