Terrie Ajile Axam: A Pioneering Artist Possessing a Legacy of “Firsts”

“I

love my culture, and I love diversity,” explains Terrie Ajile Axam, one of Atlanta’s most passionate artists.

“I believe when we share who we are culturally, we grow closer as human beings.”

Axam has been sharing her gifts for decades in the Atlanta area. She created and continues to nurture “Total Dance Productions, Inc,” a non-profit dance and performance arts institution emphasizing “leadership, transformation, and the preservation/celebration of African American culture while celebrating diversity.”

She has been a pioneer in many ways with many “firsts” to her credit.

One particularly impactful contribution has been the creation of “Mojah” which incorporates modern dance with traditional African movement.

The development of Mojah, a 30-year process, utilized a blend of modern dance (Horton, Dunham, Jazz) with West African Dance. It is a defined system of movement which was codified in 2020-2021.

Axam has claimed many other “firsts.”

She performed with the first African American Theatre Company in Atlanta, the Morehouse and Spelman players. She was one of the first African Americans to attend the Atlanta Ballet School in 1963.

She was the first African American to participate in the Ms. Atlanta pageant (1970.) She was among the first class

of women to graduate from Princeton University (1973) and the first African American to dance in Princeton’s Modern Dance Company where she also instituted African American dance classes.

Another first came in 1975-1978 when she received a Master’s Degree in Creative Arts Education with an Emphasis in Dance, the first program in the US to explore integrating the arts into the educational system.

Axam performed with the Carl Ratcliff Modern Dance Company, and her production “Women Hold Up Half the Sky,” first presented in 1987 at the King Center, is a tribute to African American Women.

Pre-Covid, Axam’s Total Dance Productions included a dance studio plus children, teen and adult companies.

It offered 700 classes and three major productions per year. Yet even the virus couldn’t stop Axam or her performers. “We averaged one event per month last year,” she says, including virtual classes, drum circles, Mojah meditation programs, galas, and festivals.

After all, it is in difficult times that the arts are most needed. “Artists are the Keepers of our Culture,” Axam says.

Axam has always invited her students to “write their own stories and invite people into them.” By experiencing her body of work, we appreciate a life story that enriches us all.

Virginia Rich Barnett and the Carl Ratcliff Dance Theatre: Cultivating Atlanta’s Modern Dance Community

irginia Rich Barnett loved to grow things, and her flower gardens were one of her passions. Her knack for cultivating beauty spilled over into the Atlanta arts community. Through “Ginger’s” nurturing and committed spirit, Modern Dance was firmly planted with the creation of the Carl Ratcliff Dance Theatre.

Ginger lived a full artistic life before modern dance entered the scene. A promising ballerina from Dorothy Alexander’s Atlanta Civic Ballet, Ginger’s talent led her to a summer at Sadler’s Wells Ballet, London.

While she was there, the New York City Ballet appeared at Covent Garden, and the impact on Ginger was tremendous. She was determined to dance for Balanchine.

Waiting for an NYCB opening, she took classes in modern dance with Anna Sokolow, a Martha Graham’s dancer.

Sokolow’s words were prophetic. She asked Ginger, “Why do you want to be a bunhead? You would be the most spectacular modern dancer!”

Ginger pursued her ballet dreams with NYCB. Shortly after joining the company, she caught the eye of Soloist Robert (Bobby) Barnett. They were soon dating, and on July 20th, 1957 they were married in Atlanta.

Wanting to raise their growing family in her native city, the Barnetts returned to Atlanta where Bobby became the Artistic Director of the Atlanta Ballet. and Ginger continued her ballet career.

In 1961, Atlanta Ballet School Director Dorothy Alexander announced, “This young

man from the west coast, Carl Ratcliff…. I’m thinking about using him in the school.” And, after watching Ratcliff teach, Ginger declared, “I want to do that!”

“One day after performing Lilac Fairy, Ginger threw her pointe shoes into a metal trash can and set them on fire,” laughs Bobby Barnett. “She never danced on pointe again.”

A few years later, Atlanta had its first modern company. Ginger, Carl Ratcliff, and their friend Teena Stern created the Carl Ratcliff Dance Theatre where Ginger performed until she was 60.

Undoubtably Ginger’s name, her influential family, and her own devotion helped stimulate Atlanta’s growing interest in modern dance, which has blossomed over the past few decades. But it was her commitment to artistry that mattered most.

Bobby Barnett believes Ginger’s greatest contribution was her one woman show, “Georgia O’Keefe.”

“She loved O’Keefe, her artwork,” he says. “She had such passion for everything she loved: her gardens, her children, her grandchildren.

“And, she was more than passionate about the Carl Ratcliff company.

“Ginger had definite ideas, and she was honest as the day is long,” Barnett continues.

“She was dedicated to the truth in everything.”

Largest undergraduate program in Georgia is home to Atlanta’s premier dance theater

he Department of Dance at Kennesaw State University is Georgia’s largest undergraduate dance program, and home to Atlanta’s premiere dance theater. Founded by Dr. Ivan Pulinkala, and chaired by Marsha Barsky, the program offers a Bachelor of Arts in Dance, unique professional partnerships, extensive co-curricular activities, and exciting performance and choreographic opportunities.

KSU Dance Company, a student group, is one of the few companies in the history of the American College Dance Association to receive five national invitations to perform at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. This distinction, along with nine regional gala selections, positions KSU Dance as a leading program among peer institutions in Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, and South Carolina.

The faculty fosters innovation in teaching and learning, combining the best attributes of a liberal arts education with superb dance training. The dance studios and facilities are on the cutting-edge, providing students with the resources to become artists, scholars and practitioners of dance. The

program prides itself on tradition, while at the same time pushing the limits of scholarship, studio practice, choreography and performance for the 21st century. The Crack in Normalcy Allows New Light to be Reflected through Atlanta Master Chorale

A

tlanta Master Chorale is delighted to be part of the resilient and creative arts community that has banded together and demonstrated cooperation, hopefulness and positivity. Our Atlanta Arts organizations, in spite of many obstacles, have created and shared some astonishing things.

Although life threw us a curveball, Atlanta Master Chorale has hit a homerun.

In the past eleven months, the Chorale has significantly expanded our reach, remaining connected with our faithful patrons and also drawing a much broader audience.

Throughout a normal year, we present four themed concerts to an in-person audience at Emory’s Schwartz Center for Performing Arts. This past year with more than 130,000 post views and 250 new followers on Facebook, a 36% increase in our YouTube subscribers, and 250,000+ new YouTube views, we have touched the spirits of more lives than would have normally been possible.

Last month we began our Spirited Conversations: Beyond the Scores, a new series of behind the scenes interviews with special guests. We look forward to our next episode featuring Joel Thompson, Emmy Award-winning composer and former AMC chorus member. Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia, Joel is currently pursuing his D.M.A. in composition at the Yale School of Music. A quickly rising and frequently commissioned young composer, Joel was vaulted to national prominence with his composition “Seven Last Words of the Unarmed”. Atlanta Master Chorale has performed a number of Joel’s choral works and recently commissioned a piece that will be premiered in our next concert season.

Composer Joel Thompson Leonard Cohen aptly said, “There’s a crack in everything. That’s how light gets in.” While nothing replaces the experience of the beauty of the live choral sound, this “crack” in normalcy created a neverimagined opportunity. Atlanta Ballet and Só Dança Partner on New Product Line

n partnership with dancewear company Só Dança USA, the Atlanta Ballet Centre for Dance Education recently announced the launch of a new line of skin tone tights and shoes for both students and professional dancers. In addition to the Atlanta Ballet boutique’s existing inventory, tights are now available in two shades and in a range of sizes from Toddler to Adult. Leather ballet shoes are available in two styles (Full Sole and Split Sole) in two shades and in children’s and adult sizes.

“We are proud to offer our Atlanta Ballet Centre students and fellow dancers in our community tights and ballet shoes that match a variety of skin tones,” said Atlanta Ballet Centre for Dance Education Dean Sharon Story. “This is such an important step for the Centre and our community, as we strive to create an atmosphere that allows the current and next generation of dancers of color to feel confident and supported in pursuing their dreams to dance.”

The Atlanta Ballet Centre for Dance Education has been working with Só Dança USA on this new line of products since 2018.

While other companies have announced offering a diverse color selection of adult shoes and tights, Só Dança’s willingness to produce inclusive shades of student-sized leather shoes is what appealed to Atlanta Ballet for this collaboration, which was not available until now.

This initiative is just one that reflects Atlanta Ballet and its Centre for Dance Education’s continued commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. The Company and school are currently involved with and spearheading multiple actions and initiatives that support the advancement of racial equity on-stage and behind-the-scenes, such as the formal implementation of an internal D&I task force, and the creation of the Centre’s Decade 2 Dance initiative to train and cultivate the next generation of dancers of color, amongst others.

Roswell Dance Theatre Performs Straight from the Heart 2019 Modern, Photo Eric Yap

M

odern Dance. It is, in part, defined as dance with greater freedom of movement. Modern dance movements include elements from a range of ideas including performance art, contact improvisation, release technique and improvisation.

Young dancers who have been trained at the Tolbert Yilmaz School of Dance grow up with these aspirations of being accepted into Roswell Dance Theatre (RDT). The performing company of TYSOD, Roswell Dance Theatre has two performing companies, the ballet company directed by Founder and Artistic Director Nancy Tolbert Yilmaz and Associate Director Mary Lynn Taylor, and the Modern Company (MoCo) under the direction of Tracy Vogt Wardlaw. The Modern Dance Company (MoCo) is North Fulton’s premier company for young modern dancers. It provides unique Horton/Graham modern dance training techniques, which truly set this select RDT MoCo group of dancers apart from other companies in the area.

Among their director’s list of professional dance training and performance credits, Ms. Vogt has recently completed the Graham Advanced Teacher Intensive at the Martha Graham School. She is dedicated to imparting her wide array of dance knowledge and perspective to her students and she encourages all her dancers to “dance

with courage”, and to be vulnerable while they deliver a performance. She believes “humans relate to other human expression, whether they understand dance or not, they will relate to the expression coming from within each dancer”.

Each spring, RDT’s MoCo performs a showcase of original modern choreography entitled Straight from the Heart. The event promotes the artistry of Modern dance, highlights the work of our Modern Company and promotes Company membership. It is a collection of vibrant works from Ms. Vogt, guest artists, alumni, fellow studio choreographers, and principal MoCo dancer members. Dancers ranging in age from 1018, perform in large group numbers, small group ensembles, and solo choreographies.

This year’s Straight from the Heart concert will look different than past performances. Dancers will perform in masks, tickets will be sold only to a small, inhouse family audience, and the community is invited to experience Straight from the Heart ‘21 via online streaming access. Most importantly, the show will be performed, as in years past, with courage and beauty. It’s a time to reach out and give, to show strength with generosity, and to dance with courage, Straight from the Heart.

ifth Third Bank Broadway in Atlanta has announced that Broadway performances are scheduled to recommence at the Fox Theatre in August, 2021 featuring the return of HAMILTON. Also slated for the upcoming 40th Anniversary season are FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, TOOTSIE, AIN’T TOO PROUD — THE STORY OF THE TEMPTATIONS, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, Disney’s FROZEN and MEAN GIRLS. Dr. Seuss’ HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS! MUSICAL, BLUE MAN GROUP and BEAUTIFUL — THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL are available as season options.

The Michael O’Neal Singers ONLINE: Keep voices and hearts ‘in tune’ during the pandemic

ince its inception more than 30 years ago, The Michael O’Neal Singers organization (MOS), based in Roswell, has provided a unique opportunity for the north metro-Atlanta community to experience musical presentations of engaging variety and artistic excellence. MOS recognizes the power vocal music has to connect and heal, and so offers choral opportunities to the community at large by hosting a nonauditioned Summer Singers program and an annual December Messiah Sing-Along.

The COVID-19 situation prevents the 140-voice auditioned MOS chorus from effectively gathering and producing in-person choral events. The Michael O’Neal Singers ONLINE offers a way for choral singers to keep their voices in shape, learn and safely rehearse choral music with a choral “surround sound,” and visit with other singers in real time. Rehearsals are offered weekly via YouTube and are followed by Zoom social sessions for those persons interested in visiting with other singers. Those MOS ONLINE participants interested in also having a virtual

choir experience can choose to participate in an optional ‘virtual audio’ performance.

The Spring session of The Michael O’Neal Singers ONLINE is entitled The Music of Our Lives and the YouTube videos will ‘premiere’ each Monday evening at 8 p.m. EST from April 5 – May 10 (they can also be viewed any time after each ‘premiere’ showing).

There is no registration fee for participation, although donations are gratefully accepted.

Singers may enroll from anywhere; MOS ONLINE currently includes participants from 26 states and eight countries spread over five continents.

Ballethnic: Building a Legacy 31 and Counting

allethnic Dance Company Inc., a legacy company of East Point, Ga., celebrates its 31st anniversary this year. Ballethnic, simply put, encompasses more than dance. The organization was created on a foundation of vision, grounded in a mission of leadership, and built on years of service. Its mission is to be a global catalyst for social change through ballet fused with African dance concepts placed on pointe.

Ballethnic was founded by husband and wife Waverly T. Lucas and Nena Y. Gilreath to create access for dancers who, in spite of proper training, are overlooked.

Students and company members are trained in the tradition of Dance Theater of Harlem, and perform original ballets relevant to the community.

The organization is comprised of two components: Ballethnic Dance Company, a classically trained, culturally diverse performing company, and Ballethnic Academy of Dance, which provides professional training for children and adults.

The goal is to involve the community,

especially youth and those who are financially disadvantaged, in an appreciation of the unique art form of dance.

Ballethnic’s professional dancers and students are held to high standards and expected to demonstrate personal discipline to acquire the focused, technical excellence required of dance artists. Collaboration is fostered through a team of parents, production volunteers, dedicated faculty, staff, advisors and the Board of Directors.

Ballethnic does not just visit Black or communities of color and the underserved for the purpose of presenting occasional programs. The organization is based in East Point where they employ their neighbors and engage local senior citizens and youth on a regular basis.

Thanks to the generosity of The Lettie Pate Evans Foundation. The Chestnut Family Foundation and Fulton County Arts and Culture, prior to the current pandemic, Ballethnic was able to stabilize at a critical time and prepare for its 31st season. Alliance Theatre Introduces the “Under the Tent” Pop-Up Concert Series

T

he Alliance Theatre today announced updates to its 2020/21 season, including a new “Under The Tent” series to provide more socially-distanced performance options. The “Under the Tent” series will include a concert staging of the Broadway hit WORKING: A MUSICAL, as well as concertstyle performances of BEAUTIFUL BLACKBIRD LIVE and SONGS TO GROW ON for youth and families. The tent will be erected on Callaway Plaza adjacent to the Alliance Theatre’s home at the Woodruff Arts Center.

“Our “Under the Tent” series offers inspiring entertainment, socially distanced seating, CDC recommended safety protocols, and — most importantly — a step back toward sharing theatre together as artists and audience,” said Susan V. Booth, Jennings Hertz Artistic Director.

Following the success of the Alliance’s drive-in production of A Christmas Carol: The Live Radio Play, the “Under the Tent” series will utilize enhanced COVID safety procedures including open-air performance, socially distanced seating in two- and four-person pods, contactless entry, and required use of face masks. All the productions in the “Under the Tent” series will be recorded and streamed on-demand on Alliance Theatre Anywhere.

Alliance Theatre Anywhere launched in the fall of 2020 and has already debuted seven new shows and series for streaming, bringing the best of the Alliance stages directly to homes. In addition to the three “Under the Tent” series productions, an additional four digital series are in development as well as the Alliance’s interactive streaming production of DATA, winner of the 2021 Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, which will be available to stream in May. To accommodate these changes and due to continuing circumstances related to COVID-19, the following previously announced productions are being adjusted.

HANDS UP will move to the 2021/22 season and will open the Hertz Stage in Fall 2021.

TONI STONE will also move to the 2021/22 season with timing to be determined.

ACCIDENTAL HEROES has been cancelled at this time but may be reprogrammed in another season.

My Journey Through Music

usic has always been a big part of my life, and has impacted my growth in so many positive ways, but it wasn’t until middle school that I learned to create music myself. Though I didn’t have the discipline or motivation to learn in 6th grade, there was a reason for it.

My flute had a leaky key and wouldn’t play correctly. Once it was fixed, I was able to play the flute. I almost quit that year, but I stuck with it and learned.

In seventh grade at Henderson Middle School in DeKalb County, our teacher, Mrs. Lynn King, passed out sheet music for Into the Rapids. That was the first time I saw notes on the page. I was able to pick up the flute and not only know what notes to play, but actually play them. I went through a pretty weird phase in seventh grade, but I rocked in the band room. That year, I won “Cougar of the Year” for band, which is basically a student of the year award.

At Atlanta’s Lakeside High School, I discovered Marching Band is an entirely different beast. You have to learn the music and then memorize it. You must learn where to march on the field, memorize the patterns and stops, and learn and memorize how many steps to take and the directions to travel. Each of those things is difficult to do separately, but together, while being judged in front of a dozen other marching bands, in the rain, during a band competition, is almost impossible.

I’m sure if I hadn’t had Mrs. King as my middle school band director, I wouldn’t have been able to enjoy or even attempt to be in the marching band. It’s been proven many times that the arts are healthy for the brain and improve grades and productivity while you are doing other things. The arts aren’t just electives, they are also outlets for people who feel out of place or are overwhelmed being teenagers in the media age. I appreciate music much more after taking band for so long, and despite its difficulty, playing and creating music are vital for many, including me. As I move into adulthood, I remind myself “A song a day keeps the F’s away”.

NBAF Re-Envisions The Move/Dance Program

T

he Move/Dance! Program brings much-needed arts education into local schools to support the creativity, talent, academics, health and wellness of the participants. Through the engagement of teaching artists, a curriculum of African American dance from the 18th to the 21st centuries is explored. NBAF has “adopted” and entered into an extraordinary partnership with Atlanta Public Schools with the goal of making a measurable impact. The program is held at Sylvan Hills Middle School, Bunche Middle School, King Middle School, and Maynard Jackson High School. These schools were selected because of their focus on arts education through their connections programs but also because they share our goal of providing resources that students will need to excel. The goal of the Program is to encourage and nurture the talent and the aspirations of the students by providing opportunities for creative expression, fun dance lessons and activities that encourage learning, participation, academic improvement, exercise and movement while supporting the school, students, parents and guardians with their academic as well as their health and wellness goals. The

Program was established by NBAF in part to address the prevalent health issues of hypertension, diabetes and other health problems that plague our communities.
