Dance Photographer Richard Calmes Celebrates 15 Years Recording “Bursts of Beauty”

his style and creative lighting are distinguished and often copied. He is also in constant demand as an event photographer, shooting numerous companies’ productions nationwide. Last spring found him in Phoenix as the Official Photographer for Regional Dance America’s National Convention where he photographed over 100 different dance pieces.

One reason for his success is the sheer beauty of his work. His studio lighting is highly dramatic yet warm, lovingly sculpting the “beautiful instruments” of his models.

“These dancers have spent years, sometimes decades, developing their amazing technical facility and bodies, and I always want to respectfully capture these amazing athleteartists at the peak of their performance,” he explains.

He is also a master of live performance, stop-motion photography that produces image after image of breath-taking moments onstage.

“This is often difficult because of the production’s lighting,” Calmes says. “Capturing movement can be challenging in theatre situations. But when things all come together, the live performance shots convey an artistic communication that studio work can’t duplicate.”

Yet studio work remains his first love.

“In the past few years, I have experimented with flour, water, and fabric to develop original images that complement the dancer and are also striking to the viewer’s eye,” Calmes states.

He began photographing dancers 15 years ago. Since then he has enjoyed remarkable international success, even though he doesn’t reside in the dance meccas of New York, San Francisco, or London. It is a testament to the artistic accessibility and beauty of his images that he continues to thrive in an increasingly popular craft.

He has dozens of magazine covers to his credit along with 3 international photo magazine cover stories about his work. He recently enjoyed a year-long exhibition at the National Museum of Dance by invitation.

Atlanta Ballet Centre for Dance Education Opens a New Studio Near Piedmont Park Atlanta Ballet Va Highlands Centre Open House, Photos by Kim Kenney

A

tlanta Ballet Centre for Dance Education, the official school of Atlanta Ballet, opened a brand new location, the Virginia-Highland Centre, on January 2, 2018. Located off of Monroe Drive in the Amsterdam Walk complex, the new location serves the Virginia-Highland and Morningside communities, expanding upon two existing locations: the Michael C. Carlos Dance Centre in West Midtown and the Buckhead Centre. A full range of classes is offered for ages 2 and up year-round, including Creative Movement, Ballet, Jazz, Tap, and Modern. Adult classes are drop-in and do not require pre-registration.

“We are very excited to be a part of the Virginia-Highland community,” says Dean of the Centre for Dance Education, Sharon Story.

“Our new location offers a third, convenient option for families and students who wish to discover the joys of dance with the Atlanta Ballet family.”

Nicole Adams, former Centre Programs Manager, was named principal of the VirginiaHighland Centre. As Centre Programs Manager, Nicole contributed to the Atlanta Ballet’s 80-plus-year history of providing accessible community and educational programs to the city of Atlanta. Nicole coordinated the Centre for Dance Education’s Healthy Living Day, an annual healthy living celebration at the Michael C. Carlos Dance Centre. At the all-day event, children and adults can participate in a variety of free activities to promote a positive, health-conscious lifestyle. Since 2013, Nicole has also coordinated the Kids In Step student matinee series. Through Kids In Step, the Atlanta Ballet Centre for Dance Education is able to provide abbreviated performances to over 20,000 children every year at a minimal cost to schools.

Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre is Blurring the Lines of Traditional Concepts of Dance

S

ince their 2017 founding Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre is Atlanta’s newest and most acclaimed contemporary dance company. Begun as a collective of five classically trained principal dancers John Welker, Tara Lee, Christian Clark, Heath Gill, and Rachel Van Buskirk desired to explore new boundaries for dance in Atlanta. “We are interested in blurring people’s traditional concepts of dance, how different art forms and performance spaces can meet to create something unexpected and beautiful,” says John Welker co-founder and Director of Terminus. The founding name, Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre (TMBT) is a reflection of that desire to be a company of innovation beyond traditional artistic boundaries. “But more importantly,” continues Welker “we wanted our name ‘Terminus’ to celebrate Atlanta, and that Atlanta has been and will continue to be a vibrant place where people and influences come together to create a great city.” If their inaugural season is any indication, they have been largely successful in staking their presence in the local dance scene, with continued aspirations for a regional and national presence. By bringing together ballet and modern dance influences they have

been able to create new theatrical dance works capable of powerful storytelling that speaks to a broad audience. With an in-town home at Westside Cultural Arts Center, and a partnership with the Serenbe Institute, Terminus is able to reach new audiences by going beyond conventional performing arts spaces. Their 2017 inaugural performances were sold-out beyond capacity followed by rave reviews. Extasis, their company debut in October 2017 at the Westside Cultural Arts Center, was a full-evening length worldpremiere choreographed by TMBT’s Tara Lee. Followed by Lore in November, another fullevening length world premiere choreographed

by Terminus’ own Heath Gill, which also served as the introduction to their outdoor performances at Serenbe.

Terminus will launch their 2018 season by presenting NEXT DOOR March 30-31st at Kennesaw State University’s new Dance Theater. It is TMBT’s first world premiere commission by L.A. choreographer and Director of AteNine Dance Company, Danielle Agami — choreography’s new IT girl. Danielle Agami sees NEXT DOOR as celebrating the explosive yet sensitive physicality of the talented cast.

he University of Georgia Department of Dance presents REPERTORY Change in Motion, the 2018 Spring Dance Concert, on April 5-7 at 8 p.m. and April 7 at 2 p.m. in the New Dance Theatre, located in the Dance Building, which is nestled between Soule and Green Streets (off Sanford Drive) on UGA’s south campus in Athens.

REPERTORY Change in Motion offers an array of movement and choreographic styles.

Based in the essential qualities of human movement and the range of human emotions, this choreographic collage offers a wide variety of dance styles, aesthetics and sensibilities, nurturing students as complete performing artists with moving minds and thinking bodies.

Enjoy a uniquely diverse event performed

by UGA dance students. Be captivated by

the syncopated rhythms of an energetic tap dance, experience “new conscious explorations” in contemporary African dance, discover the juxtaposition of postmodern pedestrian movement with contemporary sensibilities, and feel the kinetic energy featured in a guest artist piece by Chris Coates-Mitchell. Faculty and guest choreography will be performed by dance students in the UGA Department of Dance.

Choosing Love in the Face of Hate:

Remembering the Nanjing Massacre through Dance

n December 13, 1937, Japanese troops captured the Chinese city of Nanjing and subsequently took 300,000 lives over a six-week period. Not only were soldiers executed en mass, but the city’s most vulnerable civilians were raped and mutilated to death in the most unspeakable terms. Some people may know about the Rape of Nanking (or Nanjing Massacre) through Iris Chang’s 1997 New York Times bestseller by the same name, but this horrific massacre remains largely unknown in mainstream American culture.

“Ugh! That’s so awful!” one shrieked when she learned of the Atlanta Chinese Dance Company’s new piece about the Nanjing Massacre. The look on her face screamed, “Of all things you could make a piece about, why choose something so disturbing?”

Because if we forget history, we are doomed to repeat it.

Around the world, daily news reports are filled with mass shootings, nuclear threats, and sexual assault scandals. Eighty years later, the terror that gripped Nanjing in 1937 is still alive and thriving today — just in another form, by another enemy.

For the Atlanta Chinese Dance Company, the goal of commemorating the Nanjing Massacre is not to antagonize the Japanese.

Rather, it is to raise awareness about a forgotten holocaust and to celebrate the heroes who responded to such hate with love. As Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

One such example are the rural Chinese families who raised Japanese orphans in the aftermath of World War II, despite deepseated hatred of the Japanese due to atrocities such as the Nanjing Massacre. For these impoverished women in northeast China, their maternal instincts triumphed over their initial desire to beat up the Japanese orphans they encountered in the streets.

In honor of the Chinese mothers who chose love, the Atlanta Chinese Dance Company performs “Chinese Mother” — an awardwinning dance piece by China’s Northeast Normal University — as the finale of an original production Travels Around China: Circles of Love and Departure on March 31 at the Infinite Energy Theater. As a prequel, the company will premiere an original work commemorating the Nanjing Massacre. Reflections of Cultural Artist Terrie Ajile Axam

T

errie Ajile Axam is a native Atlantan who believes dance and cultural arts chose her. For over 35 years, Ajile, has been a quiet force in the field of dance and cultural arts locally, nationally and internationally. Her mission — to train and present technical and creative dancers, performers and educators with a special emphasis on transformation, leadership, and the celebration of African-American culture and diversity.

To Ajile, this means bringing professional arts into the community and the stage.

Ajile’s passion for dance and cultural arts education was greatly influenced by her experiences meeting and connecting with legendary artists and leaders including Katherine Dunham, Alex Hayley and Nelson Mandela. These experiences continued to propel Ajile toward her calling. She has trained and mentored scores of students and assisted in their journeys to becoming professional artists. Some of Ajile’s proudest success stories include her sister Dawn Axam, founder/director of Axam Dance Theatre Experience, her daughter, Kikora Franklin, an Associate Professor of Theatre/Dance and Head of Performance at Penn State University, and her niece Yasmine Axam, director of Trio Kollective.

There are a host of extended family members who are also professionals in the field.

Ajile continues this work at Total Dance where she and her sister, Dawn, guide students through a college prep program. Participants in this program have received scholarships to Brenau University, Florida State University, Fordham University and Philadelphia School of the Arts.

In 1981, the Macon branch of the NAACP identified Ajile as an “Outstanding and Influential Woman in the Plight of Human Dignity”. In 1992, Mayor Maynard Jackson proclaimed March 20th as “Women Hold Up Half The Sky” Day, recognizing her production that pays tribute to the African-American Woman.

Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus Introduces New Interim Director with The Midnight Train to Georgia

T

he Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus (AGMC) upcoming concert, Midnight Train to Georgia, will be the group’s first Atlanta performance under the direction of Donald Milton III, the 37–year chorus’ new interim music director. Mr. Milton joins AGMC after the December retirement of Kevin Robison who had been with the organization for ten years.

He brings his charismatic personality and musical expertise to the organization for the March and June 2018 productions.

“Midnight Train to Georgia perfectly represents our mission and vision of acceptance of all people,” Milton continued. “We strive to bring a positive and loving message wrapped in a blanket of musical excellence — as we say in our mission statement, to change hearts and minds through music.”

The Atlanta performances will begin at 8 p.m. Friday, March 30 and both 2 and 8 p.m.

Saturday, March 31 at the Out Front Theatre, 999 Brady Ave. Out Front has been a popular past AGMC venue where both choruses will present many of their productions going forward. “The space is perfect for many of our shows, and we fully support Out Front Theatre Company’s mission to tell stories of the

LGBTQIA experience and community through theatre and other performing arts,” stated Eve Campbell, Voices of Note executive director.

The concert follows a joint tour to Macon and Savannah by the AGMC and the Atlanta Women’s Chorus, presenting selections from the AGMC’s upcoming concert and the AWC’s recent Rewind: The First Five Years production.

Both choruses are affiliated through their Voices of Note administrative organization.

Tickets for Midnight Train to Georgia are now available. A $10 early-bird discount is in effect now through March 2, with a $5 discount March 3 through March 29. Tickets are $5 higher at the door for each performance.

Special pricing is also available for children, senior citizens and military personnel.
