New ideas and influences are added to the melting pot of Atlanta dance every day, inspiring new artists and delighting arts enthusiasts.

From Principal Dancer to Artistic Director: Gennadi Nedvigin Brings International Depth of Experience to Atlanta Ballet

nadi’s Choice,” presented March 17th – 19th at the Cobb Energy Center.

“I wanted to present the audience with a program where traditional, classical style is showcased in its original form, then continues to evolve throughout the contemporary works of the evening. Through three different pieces, audiences will have the opportunity explore the evolution and transformative nature of dance — from a 19th century classical masterpiece to exciting new contemporary works.”

The program opens with the pure classicism of “Paquita.” Following is “Denouement”, a world premiere work by American Ballet Theatre’s Gemma Bond. “Gemma uses her classical training to liberate her own vision in movement to step outside of the classical canons, and I think audiences will really connect with this exciting and expressive world premiere.”

The program closes with “Vespertine” by Royal Ballet’s Liam Scarlett. “The sensuality and delicacy of his style takes the viewer deep into the soul of a dancer, which opens up a world of beauty through organic yet almost magical movements,” Nedvigin says.

As for future productions, Nedvigin will reveal his choices “One season at a time.”

Aspirations include expanding the number of Company dancers to facilitate larger works.

This means strengthening the Atlanta Ballet Dance Center, creating a bridge from school to company. He also hopes to attract a wider and more diverse audience. “The result will give Atlanta Ballet recognition as a premiere ballet company on a regional and national level.”

had to be patient to learn the rules of working in an office while my body was calling me into the studio,” says Atlanta Ballet’s new artistic chief, the worldtravelled, immaculately trained and immensely talented Gennadi Nedvigin. “Surprisingly, I realized that I have a lot of answers that I didn’t know I would have.”

The learning curve is perhaps easier for Nedvigin, a graduate of the Bolshoi Ballet Academy and internationally known principal dancer, most recently with San Francisco Ballet. “Discipline that is developed at an early age in combination with the creative nature of our artistic profession is a rare tool that cannot be taught and is inherent to dancers.”

One of Nedvigin’s first missions was further honing his company’s abilities.

“We have spent a lot of time in the studio really focusing on the dancers’ technical skills. Further strengthening technique allows an artist to become even more versatile and confident on-stage by enhancing the ability to perform with improved expressiveness in the various styles of dance within the same program. “ Nedvigin is referring to the Atlanta Ballet’s production “Gen-

Big Atlanta Connection Highlights the High-Stepping DRUMLine Live

D

RUMLine Live, the show-stopping production created by the musical team behind the hit movies “Drumline” and “Drumline: A New Beat,” embodies the soulful, high-stepping style of the Historically Black College and University (HBCU) marching band experience. With its riveting rhythms and bold beats, DRUMLine Live hits the stage at the Ferst Center for the Arts on March 17 as part of the Arts@Tech 2016-17 Season.

DRUMLine Live has toured all over the world, but has its roots in Atlanta. Long-time DeKalb County Schools Music Coordinator Don P. Roberts was inspired to create DRUMLine Live after serving as the Executive Band Consultant for the 2002 movie “Drumline” starring Nick Cannon. In 2014, Roberts also served as Executive Band Consultant for the sequel, “Drumline: A New Beat,” a made-for-television movie by VH-1. He has worked extensively with some of the premiere theatrical and movie directors and producers in America.

The live performance also features Atlanta choreographer Jacques Bell, a University of Georgia graduate, who performs with the cast. Other members of the cast include sousaphone player Kadeem Chambers —

Kennesaw State University, dancer Cormesha Johnson — Clark Atlanta University, and dancer/vocalist Alicia Dixon — University of Georgia.

The show, now in its second worldwide tour, has shared the marching band experience with audiences across the world. Incorporating original compositions and soul-stirring interpretations of top 40 hits, DRUMLine Live’s musical journey infuses colorful, choreographed routines with heavy doses of drum riffs and cadences. With musical highlights from hip-hop, American soul, gospel, jazz, and other music genres, the show brings a unique style of drumming, mesmerizing musicianship, and lively choreography to the stage.

“I guarantee people have never seen a show like this before,” says Roberts. “The cast of musicians and singers, led by an all-star group of percussionists, will perform extraordinary choreography that will have the audience on their feet and dancing in the aisles.”

T

he Tolbert-Yilmaz School of Dance was founded in 1979 and offers training in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Modern, Broadway Jazz, Musical Theatre, Lyrical, Contemporary, Acrobatics, Aerial Silks, Kinderdance, Hip-Hop, and Pointe. All students are afforded performing opportunities and, depending on their talents, the eventual option of membership in the Roswell Dance Theatre.

The Roswell Dance Theatre (RDT) is proud to be celebrating its 32nd season under the direction of Founder/Director, Nancy Tolbert Yilmaz, and Associate Director, Mary Lynn Taylor. RDT is the performing company of the Tolbert Yilmaz School of Dance. From the open school of 800 dancers, auditions are held for children, ages 10 and up. RDT is divided into three companies — the Performing Company of 100 dancers, the Pre-Professional Company of 65 dancers under the direction of Tracey Yanckello Bayly and the Modern Company of 45 members under the direction of Tracy Vogt.

All three companies work in conjunction with each other to present the full-length Nutcracker Ballet every year. The Pre-Professional division presents a spring concert

of classical and contemporary works. This year, the Spring Concert will feature Sleeping Beauty, a four-act ballet that features around 100 performers from Roswell Dance Theatre and the Tolbert-Yilmaz School of Dance. The ballet will be performed: March 17 at 7pm, and March 18 at 10am, 2pm, and 6pm. All performances are held at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center, and tickets can be purchased at http://roswellballet. com.

The Modern Company presents its own in-house performances of original works as well as outside performances. RDT members are also offered the unique chance to create their own choreographies and present them to the public to raise funds for different charities.

RDT participates in many outreach programs to share their talents with the community.

Dance Theater to Open on Kennesaw State University’s Marietta Campus Region’s first theater built specifically for dance to open March 24-25, 2017

ennesaw, GA (January 13, 2017)–– The region’s first theater designed specifically for dance will open March 24-25, 2017 on Kennesaw State University’s Marietta campus. Housed in the Joe Mack Wilson Student Center, the theater on KSU’s Marietta campus is being transformed into an ideal venue for dance.

With a seating capacity of 450, the Dance Theater is equipped with a permanently installed sprung Marley dance floor and state-ofthe-art theatrical lighting and sound. Inspired by the Joyce Theater in New York City, it will be the performance home for the KSU Dance Company and will also host student organizations and university functions. Further, it will serve as a rental performance venue for dance in the region.

“Our new Dance Theater will help fill a void for choreographers and local dance companies by providing an affordable performance venue fully equipped for the presentation of concert dance,” said Dr. Patty Poulter, Dean of the College of the Arts.

The venue will open to the public with the premiere of “Metamorphosis,” an original work choreographed by Ivan Pulinkala, founding director of the Department of Dance at KSU. “Metamorphosis”

evokes both the metaphorical transformation of people through the power of knowledge and education, as well as the physical transformation of the venue into a dance theater.

The 45-minute work will feature 19 dancers from the KSU Dance Company. Set to an original instrumental score by KSU music major Eric Ramos, and an original choral score by Michael Engelhardt, “Metamorphosis” includes 60 singers from the KSU Chåorus, conducted by Dr. Leslie Blackwell. Lighting design is by David Tatu, scenic design is by Ming Chen and visual design is by Rebecca Makus.

eorgia State’s Rialto Center for the Arts celebrates its centennial year with the 2016-2017 Rialto Series filled with fan favorites and new discoveries — from jazz artists to world musicians to dance. “We’re so proud to celebrate our 100th year in downtown Atlanta and our 20th year with Georgia State University,” said Leslie Gordon, Director of the Rialto.

Considered “the largest motion-picture theater in the southeast” when it opened in 1916, the Rialto is now the only remaining movie theater in downtown Atlanta. 25 Extraordinary Years

I

n 1991, Natalie Cole won the Grammy for Record of the Year for Unforgettable.

Beauty and the Beast became the very first full-length animated feature film in history to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. The bestselling book of the year, Alexandra Ripley’s Scarlett, picked up where Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind left off.

Oh, and Full Radius Dance was founded!

Now it’s the 25th anniversary season — 25 extraordinary years.

Founded in 1991 by artistic/executive director Douglas Scott, the organization was originally known as Dance Force. The company began as a traditional dance company — all members were professional dancers without disabilities. In 1993, Douglas began teaching dance classes for persons with physical disabilities. Two years later, he incorporated dancers with disabilities into the company’s performances. In 1998, Dance Force was

rebranded as Full Radius Dance. The company is the only professional physically integrated dance company in the state of Georgia and one of just a handful nationally.

Physically integrated dance is not solely about the disabled body, but about the bodies of all the dancers, nondisabled and disabled.

This genre communicates an awareness and acceptance of the body and a deep sense of recognition about the potential of the body.

The company’s interest is in complementing each dancer’s strengths and abilities, not in creating a framework in which the dancers with disabilities are showcased or emphasized simply due to disability.

The March 11 & 12, 2017 concert, entitled Silver, will be a celebration of the past, present, and future of Full Radius Dance. In Act I, a retrospective of favorite works from our history. Axam’s Legacy: MOJAH Technique & Total Dance Company Connecting Arts, Family, Culture & Community

T

errie Ajile Axam’s Total Dance Company had its beginnings in 1985 in Atlanta, Georgia, at the Atlanta Arts Exchange. This arts-collective sought to bring artists of all kinds together in one space. At that time, Axam had a handful of students, but she was on a mission: to use her dance training and experience and share it with the community. Today, after more than 30 years in the Atlanta area, Axam continues her calling to use dance and cultural arts to educate, uplift, and connect communities and families.

From the start, Axam understood the unique opportunity she had to bring professional, cultural arts to the Atlanta area. To do this, Axam reached back to her family upbringing in the south and her experience as a college student during the Black Arts Movement to create a dance vocabulary called Mojah. Largely inspired by her mother, Dorimell Axam, and the work of dance pioneer, Katherine Dunham, (an anthropologist and dancer/choreographer, known as a matriarch of modern dance), Axam set out to develop young dancers using

her own original dance form. This unique style, Mojah, finds its roots in Horton and Dunham techniques and is influenced by West African dance. Mojah became a hallmark of Total Dance Company, the performing company under Dancical Productions, Inc. “Dancical”, is a term Axam coined to describe dance that integrates other artistic elements. Axam’s production, Women Hold Up Half The Sky, is perhaps her most notable example of the dancical concept, fusing music, poetry, drama, and visuals with dance. It has toured the U.S. for over 20 years. In 1992, it received a proclamation from former Atlanta, Georgia, Mayor Maynard Jackson.

Today, Axam’s legacy continues through Total Dance Company, which is presently located at Adamsville Recreation Center in Atlanta. Axam’s daughter, Kikora Franklin, teaches Mojah dance at The Pennsylvania State University, where she is an Associate Professor of Theatre/Dance. Spring Season at Atlanta Symphony Hall

S

pring is right around the corner and with it, a concert season jam-packed with world renowned artists! To kick things off, actor and performer Alan Cumming brings his hugely acclaimed cabaret show titled “Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs” to Atlanta Symphony Hall on Friday, March 3rd.

The show’s premiere received ecstatic reviews including Billboard’s description of Cumming’s performance as “unapologetically himself, and with a talent like that, he has no need to apologize.” The show continues to wow audiences all across America, Canada and Australia.
