ARTISTRY OF MASTER DANCE PHOTOGRAPHER AMANDA NEELEY t was a natural transition from dancer, teacher, and choreographer to professional dance photographer for Amanda Neeley. With 20 years experience in the discipline of dance with a focus on ballet, Amanda brings a sharp eye for correct technique and artistic composition to her images. Dancing professionally with the Georgia Ballet, Amanda has performed in such classics as Giselle, Carmen, The Sleeping Beauty and contemporary work I Never Saw Another Butterfly. Amanda started teaching while at The Georgia Ballet and has continued teaching for the past 15 years at Impact Dance of Atlanta where many of her students are accepted to national summer programs, compete at YAGP, as well as dance professionally with Miami City Ballet and Ballet Magnificat. With her students serving as great inspiration, it was here that Amanda’s immense love for the art of dance and passion for photography linked and grew into a professional photography career that in addition to dance includes weddings /engagement and event portraiture.

ATLANTA BALLET’S JOHN McFALL: AN ADVENTUROUS SPIRIT CHAMPIONING ATLANTA’S ARTS VILLAGE

O

ver the past 18 years, Atlanta Ballet’s John McFall has seen his vision and commitment take flight onstage. His contagious enthusiasm for all the arts have benefitted both the venerable institution he leads and the entire Atlanta arts “village.’

Replacing prominent artistic director Robert Barnett was John McFall with Twyla Tharp not an easy task, but McFall came in “privileged to walk the path Barnett had established.”

However, McFall explains, “I wanted to shape a vision that responded to a changing world, especially a city that was beginning to realize itself in new and wonderful ways. I have always viewed the landscape as an arts village. The arts help people in a community discover themselves.”

McFall particularly felt the need to reach out to Atlanta’s citizenry. “Early in my tenure the key was engagement,” he states. “Not just holding the doors open, but going out and grabbing people and shouting, insisting, that if they wanted to feel alive, they had to dive into the arts head first.”

The Dance Centre was founded in 1996. “We gave it shape, and before we knew it we had 1200 students. It was a swarm of energy, ideas and chaos.”

AB changed their programming. “We invited collaborators from our own streets and neighborhoods to shout out with us and join us on stage,” he says. “We invited choreographers and composers to work together and comment on ourselves, our communities, and our own times.”

Collaborations with such varied sources as the Indigo Girls and “Big Boi” Patton of Outkast, Twyla Tharp and Lauri Stallings resulted.

The ballet still offers theatre experiences for families to experience together, and there is focus on outreach, especially to underserved public schools and their students.

McFall has also seen the teaching of dance evolve. “Today’s dancers are not different from those I grew up with,” he says. It’s the teaching methods and scientific knowledge available today that helps dancers “jump higher, spin longer, have more endurance.” Yet, “All the science in the world does not create a Fred Astaire.”

How does McFall maintain audiences who still yearn for the classical repertoire? “Adventurous is the key word,” he says. “We are a dance ensemble. If the dancers are passionate about what they are doing, the audiences will feel it. Old storybook ballets are good stories. That’s why they are old. But they each can be done in a very adventurous way.”

GWINNETT BALLET THEATRE DANCERS PREPARE FOR PERFORMANCES AND COMPETITION WITH CAMARADERIE

For three pre-professional trainees at Gwinnett Ballet Theatre, these are immediate challenges which could influence their futures in dance. No pressure.

Abigrace Diprima, Kendall Greene and Bianca Melidor are representative of hundreds of youth in Atlanta dedicating their lives to dance. These three are finding themselves in a unique position, however, as they rehearse for GBT’s upcoming production of “Giselle” on March 30. Concurrently, they are each preparing a classical variation plus a modern solo for the Youth America Grand Prix which holds its Southeastern Semifinals March 1-3 at the Gwinnett Performing Arts Center.

Although opinions vary about ballet competitions, these dancers have found that the hours of preparation have benefits beyond the competitive aspect.

“I believe YAGP allows me to become a better dancer technically and artistically,” explains Abigrace, a home-schooled junior. This is her third YAGP event, having been a finalist twice. “Each year I entered YAGP, I never approached it in a competitive way but as an opportunity to better my dancing through the great coaching I have received.”

Bianca, another junior at Mill Creek High School, will be competing for the first time. “I am a little nervous because I am new to the competitive environment, but I am excited to learn from new instructors and make plenty of new friends.”

Rehearsing for GBT Artistic Director Wade Walthall’s “Giselle” at the same time has its challenges. According to the dancers, the two events can be compatible.

“YAGP rehearsals focus on making the choreography as perfect as possible. Preparing for“Giselle” is preparing for a different type of audience,” states Kendall, a Brookwood High School senior.

Abigrace and Kendall will share the role of Giselle. Bianca will perform the role of Myrtha. All three are scholastic honor students and preparing for a professional dance career. Most of all, they are best friends.

“Abigrace and Kendall are the best friends I could ever have,” says Bianca. “When I see one of my friends do something amazing, it is only natural that I would like to do what they did,” says Abigrace. “But that is a standard for myself, not competition with them. Preparing for YAGP this Dancer: Abigrace Diprima year has offered me a new camaraderie that I have never had before.”

FERST CENTER PRESENTS SEÁN CURRAN COMPANY

ocal dancers, a professional string quartet, and 40 freshmen students may not seem to have much in common, but this season they are all working with New York choreographer Seán Curran at Georgia Tech. Curran is participating in the ARTech residency program coordinated by Tech’s Ferst Center for the Arts.

Now in its third year, the ARTech program brings in professional artists to interact with local students, artists and the community in a number of ways, prior to a culminating performance that is part of the Ferst Center Presents season. Since bursting onto the national dance scene in 1997, Seán Curran’s company has become an audience favorite, exhibiting Curran’s zest for theatricality, ingenuity and uncanny physical humor.

In Atlanta last October, Curran taught a movement class with Georgia Tech students who had never danced before, taught a free master class for local dancers, and conducted an audition to find three dancers to perform in a site-specific piece he has choreographed.

Dancers Alisa Mittin, Alex Abarca and Erik Thurmond were tapped to perform the piece with Seán Curran Company member Elizabeth Coker Giron, and it is free to the public on Friday, March 1 at 6:30 p.m. in the Clough Undergraduate Learning Center on the Tech campus.

The professional string quartet Ethel, also part of this year’s ARTech residency program, accompanied both the October master class and the dance audition, marking the first time that Curran and the dancers worked with a string quartet live on stage for either a class or an audition.

Curran returns to campus this spring for more residency events and a culminating performance with his full company on March 23. Ethel also returns to campus this spring with a series of residency experiences and a full performance on April 20.

Seán Curran will be one of the upcoming participants at Small Plates, an Atlanta forum for emerging and established dancemakers to explore their work among other artists, students and enthusiasts. Curated by Zoetic Dance Ensemble, the event with Curran will be held February 28 at the Atlanta Ballet. For information on all events, please see ferstcenter.org.

ERIN HENRY KEEPS PERFORMANCES SHARP AS DANCE CAPTAIN FOR “SISTER ACT”

By Holley Calmes n the road with “Sister Act,” dancer/singer/actress Erin Henry not only has to keep herself in top shape but ensure the entire cast is also dancing their best. The popular musical hits the Fox Theatre April 23rd for 6 days and 8 performances, and Henry is the show’s Dance Captain for a cast with varying levels of dance training.

“I am thrilled to have the responsibility of keeping the show looking as sharp and clean as possible,” Henry explains. “It was obvious that our choreographer, Anthony Van Laast, wanted not just great singers but dancers and movers who could make his choreography look spectacular. There are some performers in the show with a strong dance background and others without, but all bring their unique talents to the table.”

Henry began as an Irish Step Dancer at the age of five and was soon proficient in many dance forms. “I usually only ‘bust out’ on St. Patrick’s Day,” she says. Now on the road, she works both alone and with her cast to keep her dance skills sharp.

When she is in New York City between gigs, it’s a lot easier to stay in shape. “In NYC, you are constantly taking voice, dance and acting classes,” she says. “On the road, you have to stay disciplined to do the work yourself.” And, she could add, lead her cast mates in doing the same.

“I try to practice technique whenever I can get in front of a mirror, into a rehearsal studio, or even at a local gym. Some of the girls and I love a good hip hop class! The bottom line is that in musical theatre, it is vital to keep improving and honing your craft.”

Henry also feels that being Dance Captain is easier with the current group of cast members.

“It helps to have such a fantastic group of performers who bring enthusiasm and excitement to the show every night.”

Another reward: “I love seeing people on their feet dancing along with us during the final curtain call. It’s why we do what we do.”

ATLANTA’S ALLIANCE THEATRE WILL PRODUCE THE AMERICAN PREMIERE OF ZORRO CHOREOGRAPHED BY RENOWNED FLAMENCO ARTIST RAFAEL AMARGO

By Kathleen Covington he Alliance Theatre will produce the American premiere of ZORRO, a thrilling new musical. Zorro, “the fox” will appear in a new musical set to the flamenco sound of The Gipsy Kings. The production runs at the Alliance April 3 - May 5, 2013.

ZORRO’s creative team is led by Tony® nominated Director Christopher Renshaw (Taboo; The King and I), who has been involved with the production since its inception in 2001. Renshaw was initially drawn to the possibility of developing ZORRO as the first major flamenco musical.

That vision for the show was fully realized when he, author Stephen Clark, and orchestrator John Cameron connected with The Gipsy Kings, the flamenco-rumba icons who wrote much of the music.

“The production is full of special effects, sword fighting, stunts and magic,” said Director Christopher Renshaw. “And all these elements are steeped in the passionate, earthy and sexually charged world of Flamenco dance.”

Choreographer Rafael Amargo was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Choreography when ZORRO premiere in 2009 in London’s West End. Amargo is one of the hottest flamenco talents performing today. His award-winning shows infuse the purest essence of flamenco with other choreographic trends, creating beautiful contemporary dance. Amargo has earned accolades including the most prestigious dance award in Italy, the Positano Leonide Massine award.

Starring Broadway veterans Adam Jacobs (The Lion King; Les Misérables) as Zorro, Natascia Diaz (Man of La Mancha; Carousel), Andrea Goss (Once; Rent) as Luisa, and Nicholas Carrière (The Lion King National Tour) as Ramon, ZORRO boasts an international cast and creative team.

Renshaw went on to say, “ZORRO is romantic, funny, swashbuckling adventure that has at its core the belief, that each of us has the ability to become anything we want to be. Apart from anything else, ZORRO has a huge heart, and in the world of musical theater, is a unique and very Latin experience.”
