I

n 36 years as a professional photographer, Keiko Guest has photographed thousands of dancers from their earliest stages of development. With 40 years of dancing, teaching and choreography experience, Keiko speaks to dancers in their own language—earning the trust and faith of countless professional and pre-pro dancers from Atlanta to New York that seek her dance photography expertise.

Keiko served as Atlanta Ballet’s company photographer under former Artistic Director Robert Barnett, as well as for Atlanta Opera and numerous Atlanta performing organizations. As a dancer, Keiko performed with Louisville Ballet, Lee Harper & Dancers, Ruth Mitchell Dance Company, and companies throughout metropolitan Atlanta—most recently appearing in Turandot for the opening season of Atlanta Opera in their new home at Cobb Energy Center.

Keiko—along with business partner (and former dancer) Scott Nilsson— shoots and produces studio and location portraiture, including wedding and bridal, senior and families, event and stage performances, and elegant pregnancy/pre-natal portraits. A lifelong hair and makeup artist, Keiko’s headshots are widely recognized for their style and beauty.

In fine art, most recently Keiko’s Shadowdance collection was featured at major gallery openings and performance venues, and—along with much of her other work—was showcased in publications such as Dance Magazine, The Atlantan and the ever popular Atlanta ShowGuide over the years.

Blessed with robust health at 61, Keiko continues to pursue her passion for dance, but she has traded in her pointe shoes and ballet classes for contemporary, jazz and hip hop classes—most recently expanding beyond dance to pursue acrobatics, power tumbling, Jiu-Jitsu, Qigong and aerial arts. Undoubtedly, photography of these newly discovered disciplines will enhance her ever growing body of work.

LAuri STALLiNGS FiNDS iNSPirATiON IN A COLLABORATIVE PROCESS

L

auri Stallings’ childhood in rural Florida was spent among a stimulating household that included four children enjoying a regular calendar of arts classes. When not experiencing painting, music, poetry, pottery or basket weaving, Lauri was outdoors under the influence of her earliest creative influence, the natural world.

“My earliest recollection of being most interested in dance was around trees,” Lauri explains. “I found it fascinating how I could move efficiently, through imaginary worlds made up subconsciously, around those trees.”

Lauri’s early absorption in movement led her to study dance, but her career snowballed as one of the most successful choreographers of her generation. From her experiences at Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, ABT II, and Atlanta Ballet among other organizations, Lauri has become a creative magnet, attracting ideas and excitement. Her newest endeavor is the Atlanta-based company gloATL, where she has the freedom to create art described as “part choreography and part interactive art installation, bridging the gap between artist and audience.” “gloATL’s work encourages a level of togetherness between the public and artists,” Lauri says.

“This desire to be together is not about dance, nor any other art form. It’s about man’s need to co-exist.

Lines vanish… people are just people.”

The origins of her work are an interest in what she calls “the inner human.”

“This is the aspect of dance, especially contemporary dance, that cannot live within a linear story on a piece of paper or be captured as still life. Inspiration can come from anywhere… the sonic world, the world we dream of, the world we are weary of, or all of the aspects that inhabit those worlds.”

With gloATL, the act of choreography becomes a collaborative event. “It’s a great rush and a great leap off a very narrow diving board,” she states. “I am forced to trust myself and everything in the room to find the work.”

“The artists I share the room with are the vessels, and the gloARTISTS are unusual vessels: they have very wide spouts, a very deep reservoir.

And two very friendly, soft human hands fit around that vessel. The glo creative process is everything. We ask, we wonder, we fall, we fly, we encourage, we challenge, and we feel.

And no one is left out of the process. It’s all a collaboration.”

COBY GrOSSBArT riCHArDSON: ATLANTA’S DANCE AMBASSADOR

I

f audiences recognize Atlanta as a center for dance, it might be because of Coby Grossbart Richardson, Atlanta’s own dance ambassador. Richardson is Artistic Director of The Dance Centre at Vista Grove (www. vistagrovedancecentre.com), where she has been teaching and choreographing for over 30 years.

Richardson grew up in Atlanta performing with Southern Ballet, under the direction of Pittman Corry and Karen Conrad.

Drawn to musical theatre at an early age, she spent summers performing locally with Theatre Under the Stars. She followed her dream to Broadway, where she appeared with Carol Channing in Hello Dolly, and later toured North America with the show.

When she returned to Atlanta, she assumed direction of the dance school founded by Lottie Hentschel and later formed her own performing company, The Dance Troupe. She offers her expertise to local churches and high schools, choreographing dramatic productions and beauty pageants, and is involved in Danceamerica and International Dance Challenge competition venues.

In 1996, she served as an Assistant Choreographer for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Summer Olympic Games. Richardson also judges the Schuler Hensley Awards, reviewing musical productions from over 40 Atlanta high schools.

To expose students to a variety of performing arts, Richardson takes groups to local shows, as well as productions in New York and at Walt Disney World. She uses her professional connections to open career doors for her students in ballet companies, musical theatre, Broadway, Disney, national tours and more.

“When people think of dance careers, they often think of becoming ballet dancers. But that’s just one possibility, and not everyone is suited for it,” said Richardson. “There are many more opportunities in the greater world of dance both on and off-stage, and I find it extremely rewarding to help young people find their own road to success.”

Among her protégées who have benefitted from her guidance are her children, Joanna and Noah Richardson, who are carrying on the “family business”. Joanna is performing as a Radio City Music Hall Rockette, and Noah is a dancer with Walt Disney World. They have become the next generation of Atlanta’s dance ambassadors.

A

tlanta eyes gazed on the graceful, agile Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova as she danced on the stage of the Grand Opera House, Feb. 22, 1911. Thirty-year-old Pavlova—the divinity of dance—was the supreme danseuse of the Russian Imperial Ballet. At her Atlanta premiere—a Wednesday matinee—Pavlova appeared as Azyalde in the Arabian Nights, with partner Mikail Mordkin. The evening performance—Giselle and Bacchanale—followed by Thursday’s The Swan was sold-out.

Perplexed critics questioned how to classify what it was that Pavlova did. Simply, there were no words. So, a few were coined—“pantomime ballet” and “ocular opera.”

A year earlier, Pavlova made her American debut at a charity performance for New York’s Metropolitan Opera Company in March 1910. By her April departure to Europe, she had inked a contract for the next season—October 1910 through February 1911.

Pavlova was born January 31, 1881, in St. Petersburg, Russia, to Lyubov Feodorovna, a laundress. Her father was unknown. After seeing The Sleeping Beauty at the Imperial Mariinsky Theater, dance became her passion. At age eight, the Imperial School of Ballet accepted her as a student. By 1906, she was the prima ballerina of the Mariinsky Theater. In 1913, she made her last appearance in St. Petersburg, left the Imperial Ballet and formed her independent tour company by 1914.

Although she kept a home in London, she toured globally creating new audiences for her art form, previously reserved for the privileged few.

Atlanta welcomed Pavlova’s return— March 1914, April 1915, and February 1916. All performances were at the Atlanta Theater, located on the corner of Exchange Place and Edgewood Avenue. Unknowingly, Pavlova’s farewell to the city—February 14 and 15, 1922— was on the stage of the Atlanta Auditorium on Courtland Street. She danced the Coppelia, Fairy Doll, A Polish Wedding, and her crowning work The Swan.

Giselle, in 1930 was her last dance and final appearance in London. She died of pleurisy January 22, 1931, in the Netherlands. Her ashes were buried at Golders Green in London. In 2001, Pavlova’s ashes were exhumed and moved to Novodevichy Cemetery in her native Russia.

Atlanta Constitution critic Sidney Ormond noted in 1914 that the incomparable Pavlova “galvanized America into a vivid appreciation of the dance.”

ENCOUNTER THE MOVEMENT, MUSIC, SPIRIT AND PROFUNDITY OF DANCE AT NBAF

horeography, movement, music, spirit and profundity all occupying the same space are the essential elements of great Dance. They encourage the audience to think and feel things in unexpected ways. When these elements come together seamlessly audiences open up to receive new ideas and possibilities. This has been the tradition of black dance.

As the world realigns itself, black dance throughout the African Diaspora is focusing not only on the work they are creating, but on adjusting the process of creating. At the recent International Association of Blacks in Dance annual conference in Los Angeles, issues of sustainability, maintaining aesthetic forms of expression in a changing climate, nurturing the next generation, and diversity within black dance companies were all hot topics of discussion facing dance companies and their leadership.

As a presenting organization it’s imperative that NBAF, presenters of the National Black Arts Festival, be a part of the ongoing dialogue in black dance circles. NBAF seeks to know not only the top dance companies and choreographers or our favorite pieces, but to know who is emerging, what contemporary dance looks like around the Diaspora; and are constantly re-examining its role in the presentation of these artists. NBAF’s artistic team annually attends company season performances, small showcases, world premiers of new work, rehearsals and international festivals to stay abreast of what is happening in the field and stay in touch with the artists. They have sat down with choreographers and listened to their vision, as well as the challenges they face when creating work with few resources. Each conversation is eye opening and drives home the importance of presenting this work. NBAF remains committed to supporting this work and the artists who create it. Recently selected as a Hub Site for the New England Foundation for Arts’ Dance Program, NBAF will have a role in ensuring that the funds are dispersed to as wide of an array of artists as possible when the NEFA grants are decided upon over the next two years.

Atlanta Ballet’s Centre for Dance Education Celebrates

15 Years with New Program & New Home

S

ince Atlanta Ballet opened its doors in 1929, its guiding principle has been dedication to sharing and educating audiences on the empowering joy of dance. Now, more than 80 years later, the company continues to build on that commitment and has done so through its Centre for Dance Education, which celebrates its 15th anniversary this year.

Founded in 1996 under the leadership of artistic director John McFall, Atlanta Ballet’s Centre for Dance Education provides an opportunity for everyone in the community, no matter their age or experience, to discover the world of dance. As one of the largest dance schools in the nation, the Centre serves more than 150,000 students each year over its three studios (Midtown, Buckhead and Cobb) and has become one of the top ten dance education facilities in the country. It is also the only professional school in the state of Georgia with NASD accreditation but also only one of nine in the nation to achieve that recognition. Students also receive the special benefit of being able to rehearse with and observe the professional company.

In the past year, the Centre has experienced monumental change including the move into its new state-of-the-art LEEDcertified headquarters in Midtown West, record enrollment across its three studios and the launch of its regional conservatory program.

“The conservatory program was created with a mission to give young dancers the opportunity to develop in a nurturing atmosphere that will groom them to become professional dancers and realize their place in the community as artists and mentors,” said Sharon Story, Dean on the Centre. “This program represents a new level of commitment for Atlanta Ballet and the Centre for Dance Education to work closely together to train young dancers.”

Atlanta Ballet has also continued to develop its community outreach programs, which reach thousands of school children annually.

Giwayen Mata‌ Powerful!

Powerful! describes the magnificent experience of seeing the 15 plus women of Giwayen Mata on stage playing and dancing to instruments once held sacred only for male priests but are now in the hands of those continuing the rich African traditions of drumming and dancing.

Giwayen Mata, the all sistah dance, percussion, and vocal ensemble, performs traditional West African rhythms on djembe, sangban, kenkeni, and dununba drums. Most of our dances are from Guinea, West Africa and include original contemporary works inspired by traditional African dances. Our audiences are intrigued when performance pieces include dancers delicately

weaving around drums while stylistically playing bass rhythms. Giwayen Mata is creativity focused; surprising audiences with experiences that far exceed percussive movement and includes special lighting, no bodies, and just hands. Imagine that!
