The Swashbuckling Don Quixote Takes the Stage in March

ased on the famous novel by Miguel de Cervantes, Don Quixote is a beloved classical ballet story loved by audiences for its humorous plot and lavish staging. Don Quixote blends bold choreography and exquisite dancing with a swashbuckling adventure tale that takes the famous man of La Mancha across the Spanish countryside to battle imaginary dragons, save damsels in distress, and search for his one true love.

The ballet opens with Don Quixote receiving a shave from the young village barber, Basilio, before retreating to his beloved books and drifting off into a fantasy world. He is awakened by the mischievous peasant, Sancho Panza, and the two men, along with a horse, head off in search of adventure and romance.

On their journey, the Don unwittingly becomes a co-conspirator in a marriage plot between Kitri, an innkeeper’s daughter, and the man she loves, town barber Basilio. Unfortunately, Kitri’s father has a different husband in mind for her: the rich, but vain and selfish, Gamache. Will Kitri get her man? The vibrant emotions of Don Quixote will enchant you, even as the

comic plot leaves you in stitches.

Choreographed by Yuri Possokhov, the production is infused with flourishes of Spanish culture, featuring guitars, passionate street dancers and brave toreadors in vibrant costumes with a setting to match. Through its lavish staging and a dramatic score performed live by the Atlanta Ballet Orchestra, Don Quixote will transport audiences to a world where romance, adventure and dreams take center stage.

At the center of our story are Jane and Michael Banks and their new nanny Mary Poppins. Swept up on many exciting adventures, the children fall in love with Mary Poppins and her unusual ways. They soon discover life can be fun no matter what your task, especially when you use a little magic!

Jane and Michael begin to marvel at Mary Poppins and her practically perfect ways. They learn that anything can happen and a Spoonful of Sugar is just what is needed to carry on in the most delightful way. Lucky enough to meet Mary’s friend Bert, the children visit a park and enjoy the birds, lively statues and more. Their journey continues as they spend time on the rooftops of London with Bert’s brilliant band of chimney sweeps. Things continue on in a super fashion and the family finds love and joy in the simplest of activities, flying kites on a windy day. Where will the turn of the wind lead Mary to next?

City Springs Theatre Company Presents Monty Python’s Spamalot March 10-26 at the Byers Theatre in the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center

n 2019, City Springs Theatre Company was thrilled to add Monty Python’s Spamalot on their second season schedule, and bring audiences in North Atlanta this madcap take on the Arthurian legend, and the quest for the Holy Grail.

One pandemic later, the company is finally bringing the long-awaited show to the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center, March 10-26. Better late than never, right?

When the musical opened on Broadway in 2005, the musical’s creators and producers made it a priority to create a show that would entertain audiences well-beyond the “cult status” of the famed British comedy troupe. In a 2005 interview, Python’s Eric Idle (the show’s author and lyricist) said, “We can almost take it for granted that people who love Python will come. So how do you please people who don’t know anything about it?” The answer was to not only “musical-ize” the film upon which the show is based (1975’s Monty Python and the Holy Grail), but to add a heavy dose of parody, skewering some of Broadway’s biggest shows and songs in the process.

Lauded for being “resplendently silly” by

the New York Times, and as “a big, crowdpleasing Broadway musical comedy” by Newsday, Monty Python’s Spamalot follows King Arthur (and his trusty servant Patsy) as they encounter flying cows, killer rabbits, outrageous French people, beautiful show girls, and even the iconic (and annoying) “Knights Who Say Ni,” during their quest for the Holy Grail. Spamalot won the Best Musical award at the 2005 Tony Awards, before becoming an International sensation, and even playing in Las Vegas. Creator Idle said in 2005, “You know, funny is funny… that’s what we’re selling”. With Spamalot, City Springs Theatre Company continues to sell its well-earned reputation for producing “Broadway-quality” musicals — shows that often are mistaken for national touring productions. While the cast and creative team are all-local, the show will feature the Tony-nominated costumes and scenic design of the original Broadway production. But with Monty Python’s Spamalot, it’s all about the funny, of which there will be plenty to go around when it starts, March 10, at the Byers Theatre in Sandy Springs. Gwinnett Ballet Theatre Makes Plans to Expand

winnett Ballet Theatre (GBT) is looking forward to it’s fourth season as a professional ballet company and is holding auditions for new company dancers. The company is celebrating it’s upcoming season by expanding it’s ranks and offering new contract positions. Several company, apprentice company, and trainee company positions are available. Professional and apprentice contracts are reserved for dancers age 18+ and trainee positions are available for those 16 and over. Gwinnett Ballet Theatre auditions are intended for classically-trained dancers with performance experience from a professional school or company.

Repertoire includes Beauty and the Beast, Carmen, Paquita, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and the holiday classic The Nutcracker as well as modern and contemporary works.

“We are excited with the opportunity to grow our company!” said Artistic Director, Lori Zamzow-Wire. “Our corporate sponsors have really been a blessing and we appreciate their dedication and support of ballet in Gwinnett County”, she continued. Gwinnett Ballet Theatre has a 40-week season that starts in September with the Director’s Gala followed

by The Nutcracker in December, a winter ballet, a spring production, and several

This year’s spring ballet production is a combination of two ballets set in Spain.

GBT is celebrating the romance of Spain on March 4 and 5 with two short ballets in one production: Michael Garrison’s Carmen and the second act of Paquita. Join GBT as the impetuous, hot-tempered and cold-hearted Carmen plots with her gypsy smugglers to circumvent the city guard. This iconic story of love and jealousy is performed in sequence with Paquita. In Paquita, another Spanish gypsy girl, finds out she is really of noble birth. Enjoy the Grand Pas de Deux and six solo variations in this abridged production.

Performances are held at the Gas South District theater in Duluth.

Shakespeare, a Whole Lotta Shakin’ and More at Alabama Shakespeare Festival

illiam Shakespeare’s The Tempest returns to the Alabama Shakespeare Festival in February, directed by ASF Artistic Director Rick Dildine and starring ASF alumnus Greta Lambert as Prospero. Performed on the Festival Stage, the Bard’s final play is a tale of adventure, magic, music, love, and forgiveness. Prospero has been exiled to an island with her daughter for more than a decade when she conjures a storm that crashes her enemies on the island in a violent shipwreck. What follows is a story that asks, “How do we forgive and move on after we have been harmed?” The Tempest is recommended for ages 13 and older.

In April, ASF welcomes the rebellious spirit of rockand-roll with Million Dollar Quartet on the Festival Stage. On December 4, 1956, a twist of fate

Tap into the Rialto Center for the Arts’ Season of Power + Spirit with the Power of Dorrance Dance

T

he Rialto’s Season of Power + Spirit, a curated journey through the arts, continues with Dorrance Dance, the award-winning tap dance company based in New York City, on April 1, 2023, at 8 p.m.

The Rialto presents Dorrance Dance on the heels of the first Atlanta performance in 84 years by the legendary Martha Graham Dance Company, which took place on February 5, 2023. It was preceded by the all-female tap troupe Syncopated Ladies’ performance last season.

Founded in 2011 by Artistic Director and 2015 MacArthur Fellow Michelle Dorrance, Dorrance Dance shares the incredibly dynamic range that tap dance

musician. Originally a site-specific work that explored the unique acoustics of New York City’s St. Mark’s Church through the myriad sounds and textures of the feet, “SOUNDspace” has been adapted and continues to explore what is most beautiful and exceptional about tap dancing.

“Ms. Dorrance makes full use of tone, timbre, volume, tempo and, of course, rhythm,” said Brian Siebert of The New York Times, “constructing patterns that lock together thrillingly. The main emotion that “SOUNDspace” produced was excitement about sounds, and about the development of this talented choreographer, the most promising one in tap right now.”

KSU Dance Selects Two Eleo Pomare-Glenn Conner Choreographers for Summer 2023

Generous donation from Yunek family supports choreographic residencies, two world premieres

ennesaw State University Department of Dance has selected two international choreographers for the Eleo Pomare-Glenn Conner Choreographic Residency in summer 2023. The Residency brings two curated choreographers each summer to KSU Dance to create an original work together with Dance alumni and students, made possible by an endowment from Jay and Debra Yunek.

The Pomare-Connor Memorial Endowed Fund for Dance honors the late benefactors who were luminaries of the dance world. Pomare, who passed away in 2008, was known for developing innovative choreography that deals with social inequality and injustice. The funds promote and preserve Pomare’s legacy through the cultivation of new choreographic voices.

This year, new choreographic voices Nicola Wills and Lior Lazarof have been selected as this summer’s distinguished choreographers and will create two world premieres to open the KSU Dance performance season in August. Marsha Barsky, Chair of the Department of Dance, says, “We are thrilled to bring these incredibly talented choreographers to KSU Dance this summer. The competition

was fierce; the selection committee reviewed over 86 applications, spanning 20 states and six countries.” One of those countries with a strong showing was Israel, known internationally for its acclaimed contemporary dance.

Israeli dance artist Lior Lazarof studied in the Sadna professional dance program, located in Kibbutz Ga’aton, and she graduated from Ga’atonusalem Academy of Music and Dance in 2016.

In 2022, she was selected for the ATLAS program for choreographers in ImPulsTanz. She is a member of The Israeli Choreographers’ Association.

About 15 hours away from Israel on the fastest flight, South Australia is home to Nicola Wills, where she started her dance training and developed her passion for performing a variety of dance styles. Moving to Europe in 2012, Nicola danced briefly with Dortmund Ballet, Germany, before joining the Ballet van Vlaanderen in Belgium in 2013, where she was promoted to Demi-soloist in 2017 and is currently still dancing.

Audiences may see both world premieres in person at the KSU Dance Theater on the Marietta campus in August 2023. Dates will be announced (and tickets go on sale) July 1, 2023, at KSUDance.com.

Spring at the Alliance Theatre will Bring a World Premiere and a Musical inspired by a Legend

inner of the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, THE MANY WONDROUS REALITIES OF JASMINE STARRKIDD will have its world premiere on the Hertz Stage at Alliance Theatre March 1 – April 2, 2023.

When a 12-yearold computer genius, Jasmine, realizes that time travel is a lot easier to figure out than trying to convince her parents to get back together, she decides to take matters into her own hands. Written by Stephen Brown, a fellow at The Juilliard School’s Lila Acheson Wallace American Playwrights Program, and directed by BOLD Associate Artistic Director Tinashe Kajese-Bolden.

On the Coca-Cola stage April 1 through April 16, THE BOY WHO KISSED THE SKY will celebrate the influences of musical icon Jimi Hendrix. Set in the heart of Seattle to the rhythms that shaped a generation, we see a young Black boy conjure his creativity as a budding guitarist. Guided by the spirit of music itself, the Boy learns to find harmony inside the challenging noises of his life. Although more mythology than biography, THE BOY WHO KISSED THE SKY is a celebration of our muses

and the forces that pull us to be who we are. Commissioned by Seattle Children’s Theatre in partnership with Alliance Theatre, this highly theatrical play by Idris Goodwin celebrates all the young artists who follow their muse.

Bernstein’s Comical Candide Brings Timeless Music to Atlanta Photos by Karli Cadel/The Glimmerglass Festival

world of adventure and discovery comes to the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre March 4-12 as The Atlanta Opera’s groundbreaking 2022-23 Mainstage season continues with Leonard Bernstein’s Candide. Tenor Jack Swanson, soprano Deanna Breiwick, and bass Kevin Burdette headline a marquee cast of singers. Alison Moritz directs.

This production kicks off a momentous spring for The Atlanta Opera. The 2022-23 Discoveries series concludes with The Anonymous Lover, an unearthed gem by 18th-century Black composer Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges. A love story for the ages by a composer considered prolific during his time and an influence to Wolfgang Amadeus, this romantic comedy is one not to miss. Morehouse College serves as host for the production of this captivating opera, running March 31-April 2.

Finally, the legend begins as Das Rheingold, the first entry in Wagner’s epic Ring Cycle, commands the stage April 29-May 7 as the final production of a transcendent season of opera in Atlanta.

These scintillating productions will also be available to stream online as The Atlanta Opera Film Studio continues its unprecedented growth as a pioneer of digital opera content through livestream events and fully-produced opera films.

Additionally, the Film Studio is thrilled to present its official film of The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs, using elements captured during last season’s live production of the innovative opera and digitally mastered with over 40 additional scenes not seen on stage. A Shakespeare Whodunnit!

The Atlanta Shakespeare Company Explores the Authorship Controversy with a New Comedy

F

or hundreds of years, literary scholars and historians have debated the true authorship of Shakespeare’s Jeff Watkins plays. A new comedy, By My Will, playing at The Shakespeare Tavern Playhouse in April, explores this idea in smart and surprising ways. An assortment of 16th century playwrights, poets and regal figures meet up in a unique location to determine who among them wrote the works attributed to the man from Stratford. It’s a veritable comic vivisection of the authorship question with twists, turns, and bawdy humor. You might even say, it’s a play...on words!

From Artistic Director Jeff Watkins’ point of view, doubts have abounded about the authorship question since the mid-19th century. “Many of our audience members have been curious and brave enough to explore those doubts with me over the years so I wanted to create a fun evening delving into it with them. It’s an honor and a privilege for an Artistic Director to be able to commission a new work for their theatre.

Even better that I got to give this task to my college friend, Doug.”

Awardwinning playwright Douglas Post Doug Post learned a lot writing the piece. “There is an adage in my line of work that states, ‘You never learn how to write a play. You only learn how to write THIS play.’ The challenges are always new. In the case of By My Will, I read dozens of texts, plays and collections of poetry. At some point the characters involved in this story began to speak to me. My responsibility was to transcribe their words as fast as possible. I knew that the piece wanted to be a comedy.

And I knew it had to have a series of twists and turns that would hopefully delight our audience and keep them guessing.”

Douglas is confident By My Will will “inspire you to think through some issues related to the writing of Shakespeare’s plays that you may not have previously considered. It will provoke conversation.

And it will provide some serious laughs.”

Voices of Note’s 2023 Season Features Six Performances and the Kick-Off of a $250,000 Capital Campaign

oices of Note (VON) is a catalyst for social change. The renowned Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus and Atlanta Women’s Chorus comprise the largest community music organization in the Southeast. Each chorus presents three annual concert experiences defined by musical excellence and a commitment to promoting equality for all people. Voices of Note believes that the most effective way to deliver the message of equality for all people is with music. Through music, they’re changing hearts and minds.

The 2023 season begins with the Atlanta Women’s Chorus celebrating its 10th anniversary, kicking off the season with its show “Finding Light and Resilience”.

As the title suggests, the songs elicit feelings of light and resilience in the human experience. Moving choral pieces such as “Where the Light Begins” by Susan LaBarr, “Does the World Say?” by Kyle Pederson, “Earth Song” by Frank Ticheli, and “Song for Justice” by Kim Andre Arnesen, represent both beauty and struggle. They will also return to some previous concerts, such as “Spark” by Eric William Barnum, our

commission pieces by Sarah Quartel, “Refuge,” and, of course, “For Good” by Stephen Schwartz.

In addition, Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus premieres the “Songs of the Phoenix,” a large 10-movement choir work featuring original compositions by some of today’s most renowned composers like Stephen Schwartz, Ingrid Michaelson, and the late Stephen Sondheim. The piece will center on themes of triumph, rebirth, and joy, all of which are common responses to a devastating loss. The songs’ lyricists and composers will each share personal anecdotes from their respective backgrounds in culture, religion, and the human experience.

Ballethnic Academy of Dance Training Prepares Students for Professional Opportunities Four Young Black Ballerinas will represent East Point, GA in The Premier International Dance Festival in Toronto, Canada.

C

anada’s National Ballet School will host four Ballethnic Academy of Dance students the first week of May 2023, all-expenses paid. These middle school through high school-aged dancers will travel across the continent with Ballethnic Dance Company Co-Founders, Waverly Lucas and Nena Gilreath to train and perform alongside the best and brightest of their peers from across the globe.

Due to these young dancers’ extensive training as pre-professionals at Ballethnic Academy of Dance during the school year and the studio’s Summer Dance Diversity Intensives, they have performed leading roles in Ballethnic’s professional productions of the Urban Nutcracker and The Leopard Tale. Through their continued dedication and consistent training, there is no telling where dance will lead them next.

A Small Theatre in the Middle of Everywhere: Oglethorpe University’s Dynamic Spring Lineup

iscover Oglethorpe University’s thriving arts community! Here, it’s all about the experience—for our students and our audiences.

The Conant Performing Arts Center, the university’s premier venue, stages both student and professional theatre productions and music performances throughout the year. Following last fall’s hit show “Heathers: The Musical,” Actor’s Express and Oglethorpe have teamed up once again to present the satirical comedy musical “Urinetown.”

In the not-so-distant future, a 20-year drought has depleted the land of water and all citizens must pay the corrupt “Urine Good Company” megacorporation for the privilege to pee. When a young idealist decides enough is enough, he leads a ragtag revolution to reclaim their right to pee freely! The show runs Feb. 2-19 on the Conant stage and features Oglethorpe theatre students alongside professional actors.

OU Theatre will return to the stage in April with the courtroom drama, “12 Angry Jurors.” This classic American tale tells the story of 12 strangers called together as a jury to determine the fate of a 19-year-old man standing trial for his father’s murder.

Set during the intense deliberation, the story slowly sheds light on each of the characters, exploring certainty, doubt and those charged with delivering justice.

The Oglethorpe University Museum of Art, located in historic Lowry Hall, hosts free exhibitions throughout the year, plus concerts, lectures, and workshops. This year, Oglethorpe welcomed internationally acclaimed Atlanta artist and activist Shanequa Gay as our visual-artist-inresidence. Her residency culminates with a spring exhibition of her works, “shanequa gay: thought and memory,” on view February 15-April 23, 2023.

Dedicated to serving a diverse community, the museum has announced an expanded commitment to accessibility, including a partnership with local health organization Art Pharmacy. The museum is now included in Art Pharmacy’s registry of locations around Georgia that may be prescribed to help manage stress, anxiety, and sadness, while offering a way to connect with community.
