rom larger-than-life folklore to a highvoltage clash of historic innovators, the Center for Puppetry Arts delivers a summer season filled with imaginative storytelling for audiences of all ages.
First up, American Tall Tales (July 1–August 2) brings some of the nation’s most legendary folk heroes to life in a lively, foot-stomping puppet adventure. Drawing from America’s most popular largerthan-life stories, this production invites audiences into a world where imagination knows no bounds. Filled with humor, energy, and colorful characters, the show captures the spirit of classic American storytelling while introducing young audiences to the enduring tradition of tall tales. With inventive puppetry and dynamic staging, American Tall Tales transforms familiar legends into an engaging theatrical experience the whole family can enjoy.
Later in the summer, Tesla vs. Edison (August 5–23) ignites the stage with a bold, high-voltage theatrical showdown for adult audiences. This electrifying production dives into the legendary rivalry between Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison, two towering inventors locked in a battle that helped define the modern age. The show crackles with dramatic tension, razor-sharp storytelling, and breathtaking large-scale puppetry that brings the “War of the Currents” to life in spectacular fashion. Witty, stylish, and unapologetically bold, Tesla vs. Edison is a night of theater that fuses history and spectacle, proving puppetry can be just as thrilling for adults as for younger audiences.
Both productions showcase the Center’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of puppetry while creating meaningful experiences for audiences of all ages. Atlanta Master Chorale Announces an Exciting 2026-2027 Season
For more than 35 years, Atlanta Master Chorale has touched hearts and spirits with the transformative power of choral music, earning a reputation for transcendent sound and a mission to “inspire and enrich the lives of our community through choral artistry.” (Chorus America) This fall, we return to Emory University’s Schwartz Center for Performing Arts with a fourconcert season that spans the full emotional range of choral music—from serenity to celebration, from sacred solemnity to the irresistible joy of dance. The season opens with Serenity and Joy on October 9 and 10, 2026, featuring Frank Martin’s Mass for Double Choir, widely regarded as one of the greatest a cappella choral works of the 20th century. Drawing on the intricate vocal interplay of Renaissance polyphony and enriched by warm post-Romantic harmonies, this virtuosic masterpiece captures both stillness and exuberance in a single extraordinary work.
Jamie Barton returns to the Schwartz Center stage for the first time since 2013. From the festive ring of “Jingle Bells” to the hushed beauty of “O Holy Night,” the program promises to be one of Atlanta’s most cherished holiday events.
In March, the Chorale presents the Duruflé Requiem (March 12 and 13, 2027), a masterpiece that weaves the lush beauty of French harmony with the timeless melodies of Gregorian chant. Organist Jon Easter will accompany the ensemble and also perform a solo work by Duruflé, making for an evening of profound and meditative music.
The season closes with Come and Dance (April 30 and May 1, 2027), a jubilant celebration of the relationship between music and movement, centered on Johannes Brahms’s beloved Liebeslieder Waltzes.
December brings the beloved Christmas with Atlanta Master Chorale (December 11 at 8 p.m.; December 12 at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.), with an added highlight: internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano

Schwartz Center for Performing Arts audiences are invited to experience a remarkable year of artistry at the highest level, presented in the acoustically stunning Emerson Concert Hall. The 2026–27 season showcases a roster of internationally acclaimed artists and innovative programs. Highlights include the return of Grammy Award–winning pianist Yuja Wang, known for her bold interpretations of both classical and contemporary repertoire, and the celebrated flutist Jasmine Choi, hailed by the Korea Times as “the goddess of flute.” The renowned Academy of St. Martin in the Fields joins pianist Conrad Tao, while the Aaron Diehl Trio collaborates with soprano Mikaela Bennett to explore the music of André Previn.
Creative collaborations and original works also take center stage. The Green Room Ensemble—Nathan Meltzer, Thomas Bowes, Jordan Bak, and Sterling Elliott—appears alongside pianist-composer Eleanor Alberga performing her String Quartet Cycle. In a contrasting program, Tessa Lark, Joshua Roman, and Edgar Meyer bring a bluegrass-inspired perspective to Bach’s Sonata for Viola da Gamba in G Major.
Additional offerings include a special Candler Concert Series dance presentation, The Play, by acclaimed choreographer Jeanine Durning, and the cherished Emory Choirs tradition, A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. The annual Emory Jazz Fest will also return, featuring the Gary Motley Trio and a weekend of performances and educational events.

The 58th season of the Alliance Theatre will feature twelve productions on three stages including five world premieres, four musicals, and four productions for youth and families. The Alliance’s Bernhardt Theatre for the Very Young season will include four additional productions designed for infants and toddlers who are newborn through 5 years old.
will present the critically acclaimed Off-Broadway musical, MEXODUS (Oct. 2 – 16, 2026). Written by Brian Quijada and Nygel D. Robinson, MEXODUS is a thrilling hip-hop musical that uncovers a hidden chapter of American history— when thousands of enslaved people fled across the Rio Grande to freedom in Mexico.
The 58th season will begin on the Coca-Cola Stage with Branden JacobsJenkins’ Tony Award- and Pulitzer Prizewinning play PURPOSE (Aug. 28 – Sept. 20, 2026). PURPOSE is a co-production with McCarter Theatre Center.
On the Goizueta Stage for Youth & Families, the Alliance will produce CARMELA FULL OF WISHES (Sept. 1 – 27, 2026). Inspired by the award-winning picture book by Matt de la Peña, CARMELA FULL OF WISHES is a lyrical and heartfelt story celebrating family, imagination, and the beauty of everyday life in a vibrant Latino community. With music, movement, and vivid storytelling, this production invites audiences of all ages to celebrate heritage, resilience, and the power of a single wish.
On the Coca-Cola Stage, the Alliance
On the Hertz Stage, Alliance will produce the world premiere musical thriller, LIKE FATHER (Oct. 8 – Nov. 15, 2026), by Jacob Ryan Smith & Caroline Pernick with direction by Tinashe KajeseBolden (Covenant, The Preacher’s Wife). Driven by a bold, innovative folk-pop score, LIKE FATHER explores legacy, identity, and the cost of obsession, inspired by the loved ones left in the wake of infamous serial killers—and by the true-crime industry’s meteoric rise to over 250 million listeners worldwide.

The 27th Annual Essential Theatre Play Festival Comes to 7 Stages this August
Essential Theatre has given Georgia playwrights a voice for over 25 years, producing more than 40 World Premieres and helping launch the careers of nation-wide successes like Topher Payne and Lauren Gunderson. The 2026 Essential Theatre Festival continues this tradition with three packed weeks of new works by Georgia playwrights, including the world premiere of 2026 Essential Theatre Playwriting Award Winner Susan Swavely’s Helen of the West, plus readings, showcases, and presentations of Georgia playwrights’ work.
About the World Premiere:
Winner of the 2026 Essential Theatre Playwriting Award, Helen of the West is a rich re-imagining of the fabled story of Helen of Troy, now seen as a mail-order bride in the American West. Essential’s Founding Artistic Director, Peter Hardy, directs.
On being the 2026 Essential Theatre Playwriting Award Winner and having her play headline this summer’s festival, Swavely says, “The south is full of TONS of progressive, smart, talented artists. I’m truly so honored to have been selected, and I hope that my play resonates.”
The Essential Theatre Playwriting Award, given out annually since 2001, is the only prize of its kind, exclusively dedicated to the work of Georgia playwrights with the winner receiving both a $1,000 cash prize and a full professional production. The Atlanta Opera Announces its 2026-27 Season: “Love is a Dangerous Game”
When was the last time you got to spend an evening with a fiery seductress or a brooding ship captain with a story to tell? It’s all waiting for you as The Atlanta Opera’s 2026–27 season explores the risks people take for love. The productions are filled with passion, obsession, and sacrifice, but most of all spectacular music and spellbinding stories. Spanning historical drama, sweeping romance, and supernatural mystery, these operas invite you into worlds where love inspires courage, fuels ambition, and ultimately changes lives.
The season opens with Silent Night, the Pulitzer Prize-winning opera inspired by the true story of a temporary Christmas truce during World War I. Set on the front lines of battle, the work follows soldiers from opposing sides who lay down their weapons to share a brief moment of humanity. Both deeply moving and profoundly relevant, Silent Night explores compassion, connection, and the enduring power of hope in times of conflict.
Next comes the beloved opera, Carmen in a gorgeous revival production. Filled with passion, jealousy, and unforgettable music, George Bizet’s masterpiece follows the fiercely independent Carmen as desire and obsession spiral toward tragedy. Featuring some of the most famous melodies ever written, Carmen remains a thrilling exploration of freedom and love, and the consequences of trying to control either.
In March 2027, Richard Wagner’s haunting masterpiece The Flying Dutchman returns to the Atlanta Opera stage starring Grammy Award-winning bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green. A supernatural tale of longing, redemption, and sacrifice, this Tomer Zvulun production is “... moving and totally captivating” (BroadwayWorld) Sweeping orchestral music and powerful storytelling bring to life the legend of a cursed sailor searching for salvation through love. The result is a deeply emotional journey that explores devotion, destiny, and the hope of second chances.
Closing the season is Puccini’s Tosca, a riveting tale of love, betrayal, and political intrigue. As the greatest Hitchcock plot that Hitchcock never directed, the work is set in turbulent Rome and combines soaring melodies, high-stakes drama, and unforgettable characters in one of opera’s most thrilling theatrical experiences.
In addition to its mainstage productions, The Atlanta Opera’s Discoveries series continues with intimate and innovative works that expand the art of opera and storytelling.

Ballethnic Dance Company Celebrates a Summer of Dance, Culture, and Community
Summer 2026 is bursting with artistry, education, and cultural enrichment on Ballethnic Way!
The season begins with Ballethnic’s Cultural Arts Camp, running June 1–26. Young artists will spend four weeks immersed in dance, music, art, and cultural exploration while developing their creative talents in a supportive and inspiring environment. The camp concludes with a special community performance as participants dance in the East Point World Soccer Games Kickoff Parade on Saturday June 27 at 11 a.m. Following the parade, Ballethnic’s professional dancers will take the stage for a featured performance, bringing its signature blend of ballet, African dance, and contemporary movement to the audience.
Adults looking to stay active this summer are invited to participate in Ballethnic’s Adult Summer Series, beginning June 15. Designed for dancers of all experience levels, the series offers a variety of classes including African Dance and Drum, Ballet, Modern, and Floor Barre. These classes provide a welcoming environment for adults to build strength, improve flexibility, and let loose.
Serious young dancers can further their training through Ballethnic’s Summer Dance Intensive, taking place June 29–July 17. The intensive offers focused instruction in ballet, jazz, tap, pointe, modern, African, yoga, and conditioning, helping students strengthen their technical skills and
artistic expression under the guidance of experienced faculty.
Looking ahead to the fall performance season, auditions for Ballethnic’s beloved holiday production, The Urban Nutcracker, will be held on July 11 from 3-5:45 p.m. Dancers interested in joining this celebrated Atlanta tradition are encouraged to audition for the opportunity to perform in one of the city’s most anticipated holiday productions.

“Did
Shakespeare Write A Christmas Carol?”
It’s a common question The Atlanta Shakespeare Company hears anytime they produce a non-Shakespeare show. It makes sense, his name is in the name of the company and the building ASC has performed in since 1989. However, the tagline for the company has always been “Shakespeare and the classics in a casual Tavern atmosphere.”
Audiences certainly are not questioning the efficacy of their lifelong dedication to the works of William Shakespeare. The fact remains that with twelve months of programming to present each year, more than any other theatre company in the state, there are opportunities to step out and present something that is “Shakespeare Adjacent” (aka “Nearspeare”). Or maybe they just want to tell a timeless tale that Shakespeare didn’t write.
It’s a benefit to everyone from educators being able to bring their students to see, for instance, Tennessee Williams’ “The Glass Menagerie” at a theatre they trust, to well-seasoned subscribers who are interested in expanding their horizons, to actors stretching their performing chops in a new way.
For families who want to
introduce their kids to the theatre, ASC regularly offers summertime adventure classic tales, like Ken Ludwig’s Sherwood: the Adventures of Robin Hood and his version of Alexandre Dumas’ The Three Musketeers. Of course, let’s not forget about Charles Dickens every December for the past 20+ years!
Audiences are on board for the variety. For two Octobers in a row, ASC, along with Havoc Movement, presented a monthlong version of Dracula: The Failings of Men that was the quickest-selling show in ASC’s history. In April 2024, along with Belle Esprit, ASC thrilled audiences with a fresh new adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility; in May 2025 they brought Pride & Prejudice to life.
Of course, for those “Shakespearespecific” kinds of patrons, The Atlanta Shakespeare Company will always produce more ‘Speare every year than any other company in the country. After all, ASC is the only Shakespeare company in the world to have completed his 39-play canon...twice.

The Atlanta Black Theatre Festival returns September 3–5, 2026, celebrating 15 years of powerful storytelling, cultural connection, and resilience.
This milestone season features main stage productions, staged readings with talkbacks, short films with panels, celebrity conversations, panel discussions, the Small Business and Art Expo, and the beloved Chocolate Box Showcase.
“We are beyond excited to celebrate 15 years,” said Executive Director Toni Simmons Henson. “We’ve overcome tremendous obstacles, including surviving the pandemic, and we’re still standing. This year is about honoring that journey while creating new opportunities for the next generation.”
A major highlight is the inaugural HBCU Showcase, an invitational event designed to give HBCU theatre departments performance opportunities beyond their campuses. Twenty-two schools were invited, with Hampton University, Morgan State University, Claflin University, and Spelman College selected to participate. The schools will compete for a coveted first-place prize while networking, exchanging ideas, and giving students valuable industry exposure.
ABTF returns to Spelman College,
hosted at the new LaTanya Richardson Jackson and Samuel L. Jackson Performing Arts Center and the Mary Schmidt Campbell Center for Innovation and the Arts.
Golden Globe-winning actress Regina Taylor will perform her award-winning one-woman show, Exhibit. The festival also welcomes back Dr. Tyrone Stanley, recent Helen Hayes Award winner, whose Soul On Fire debuted at the very first ABTF starring Shirley Murdock.
The festival closes with a 15-year birthday bash and the presentation of the ABTF Theatre Legend Award to Phyllis Yvonne Stickney.

Moving Through Life with Mojah
My journey in dance began as a young girl whenever I heard the sound of drums. A warm sensation would move throughout my body, creating a feeling of joy, energy, and connection. My mother was my first dance teacher, introducing me to the Latin dances Merengue and Salsa and inspiring my love of movement.
I began my formal dance training in Atlanta, studying ballet at the Phyllis Wheatley YWCA, Smith School of Dance, the Atlanta School of Ballet, and with Dwyane Dishon. I later continued my studies at the Dance Theatre of Harlem and attended the Alvin Ailey School on scholarship. These experiences provided a strong technical foundation and exposed me to a variety of dance traditions.
A defining moment in my childhood occurred during a summer camp at Frank L. Stanton Elementary School. I watched a dancer dressed entirely in black perform a modern dance unlike anything I had ever seen. Until then, I had only been exposed to ballet. The beauty and expressive freedom of that performance expanded my understanding of dance and became part of the vision that would later shape my life’s work.
After graduating from high school,
I attended Barnard College of Columbia University in New York City. There, I was introduced to my first traditional West African dance, Gahu, by Alfred Ladzepko. I also studied with Baba Chuck Davis, experiences that deepened my connection to African cultural traditions and their expression through dance.
Today, I have spent 72 of my 75 years dancing. I am the creator of the Mojah Dance Technique, a codified Modern African dance form developed over more than fifty years. The foundation of Mojah began while I was attending Princeton University and is rooted in the cultural practices of West Africa and the United States. The technique intentionally blends diverse movement traditions to reflect the richness of the African diaspora.
Having had the opportunity to train under pioneering dancer and anthropologist Katherine Dunham further strengthened my commitment to preserving and advancing Africancentered dance. My goal is to promote Mojah as a recognized dance form of the African diaspora, honoring cultural heritage while inspiring future generations through movement, discipline, and artistic excellence.

The Momentum Continues: Georgia Symphony Orchestra Launches Season 76
There’s a feeling you get the moment the lights dim and the orchestra draws its first breath—a collective stillness, an electric anticipation. It’s the feeling the Georgia Symphony Orchestra has been delivering to metro Atlanta audiences for 75 years. And Season 76 promises to give it to you again and again, in ways you won’t expect.
This season, Music Director Timothy Verville and the GSO have built a lineup that moves—from the bold and the classical to the intimate and the joyful. It opens in October with American Tapestry, a concert that traces the sweep of this country’s musical soul through the sweeping optimism of Copland and Bernstein and the fire of powerful contemporary voices. It’s an evening that asks you to listen, reflect, and feel—all at once.
Come December, the GSO brings its beloved Holiday Pops back to the Marietta Performing Arts Center for two performances filled with the warmth and sparkle that have made it a seasonal tradition for families across the region. And
in January, GSO Jazz steps into 1959—one of the most electrifying years in jazz history— conjuring the spirits of Duke Ellington, Nina Simone, John Coltrane, and Ella Fitzgerald at the stunning Earl and Rachel Smith Strand Theatre.
February brings a different kind of beauty: the GSO Chorus joins the orchestra for a deeply moving performance of the Brahms Requiem, a work that has consoled and uplifted listeners for 150 years. And in the spring, the season closes with [CENSORED]—an act of musical defiance featuring Sibelius and Shostakovich, composers whose music survived censorship and outlasted the powers that tried to silence them.
And there’s still more. You’ll find the bold brass and bell bottoms of 1970s big band jazz at its peak, and a Classics concert that celebrates the rule-breakers who changed music forever—with Beethoven himself leading the charge.
