The Alliance Theatre Announces Major Productions for 57th Season

he 2025/26 season of the Alliance Theatre includes important classics and new works, and will culminate with a blockbuster world premiere musical. In the fall on The Coca-Cola Stage, the Alliance will co-produce with The Atlanta Opera a bold new staging of the beloved classic musical, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. A story of resilience and hope, FIDDLER weaves together family tradition challenged by the winds of change through one of Broadway’s most unforgettable scores. This production is directed by The Atlanta Opera’s Artistic Director, Tomer Zvulun.

CAROL on The CocaCola Stage. Described by The Atlanta JournalConstitution as “high art of the season…a nostalgic feast for the eyes”, audiences will be transported to the streets of London for the uplifting redemption story of Ebenezer Scrooge, told with beautiful live music. The season will close with the world premiere musical, BASURA. Ninetime Grammy Award® winner Gloria Estefan — whose music has sold over 100 million records worldwide — has shaped generations through song. Now, she joins her daughter, acclaimed singersongwriter Emily Estefan, to co-write the music and lyrics for BASURA, a powerful and bold new musical inspired by the true story of Paraguay’s Recycled Orchestra, where young artists turn scrap material into instruments, and music into possibilities. Essential Theatre — Giving a Voice to Georgia Playwrights

ssential Theatre has given Georgia playwrights a voice for over 25 years, producing more than 40 World Premieres and helping launch the careers of nationwide successes like Topher Payne and Lauren Gunderson. The 2025 Essential Theatre Festival continues this tradition with four packed weeks of presentations of works by Georgia playwrights, including the world premiere of 2025 Essential Theatre Playwriting Award Winner Matt Hoffman’s A Very Special Hospital, plus readings, showcases, and presentations of Georgia playwrights’ work. About the World Premiere Production: Winner of the 2025 Essential Theatre Playwriting Award, A Very Special Hospital is Hoffman’s second full-length play. The first, The Manuscript, won the 2023 Essential Theatre Playwriting Award and premiered two summers ago to enthusiastic acclaim. A dark comedy about healthcare with a piercing family story, A Very Special Hospital takes the audience on an increasingly surreal journey that nevertheless delivers the poignant connection that audiences so loved in Hoffman’s first play. Insistent Presence at the Michael C. Carlos Museum

rawn from the collections of the Chazen Museum of Art at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and curated by Emory PhD candidate Margaret Nagawa, Insistent Presence features works of sculpture, painting, ceramics, and printmaking by 24 artists who have lived and work on the African continent and in the diaspora. The exhibition examines how artists have reimagined the human figure to pose questions about social and political histories, contested identities, and a possible future for how we relate to one another. The artists in the exhibition think about 21st-century ways of being in the world and invite us to reflect on ourselves, our relationships, and the worlds we inhabit. The exhibition features 24 artists that span the continent, from Tunisia and Egypt to Nigeria, Uganda, Kenya, Mozambique and South Africa. Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Tanzania are also among the countries represented in the exhibition. The works came to the Chazen as part of the Contemporary African Art Initiative, a five-year project that built upon several contemporary African artworks the Chazen

collected in the late 1990s. “Insistent Presence offers a digest of African culture that invites viewers to experience life over many decades across the vast continent,” said Margaret Nagawa, the exhibition’s curator. “Each work in the exhibition provides a lens through which the viewer can gain insight into the social, political and religious context in the region. As the artists use the human figure to chronicle decolonization, restitution and other eras of African history, visitors will consider the role of the body in colonialism, humanism and modernity.” Nagawa is a Ugandan artist and curator with expertise in African art and the relationships between visual, literary and performance art. She is pursuing doctoral studies in art history at Emory University and holds a master’s degree in curating from Goldsmiths, University of London and a bachelor’s degree from the Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Arts at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, where she studied painting and sculpture. radition!” declares Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof — not as a cry to preserve the past untouched, but as a reminder that the old and the new can dance together. It’s a fitting overture for The Atlanta Opera’s 2025–26 season: a vibrant, genre-defying journey that honors operatic legacy while reshaping it for today’s stage. At the heart of this bold programming is General and Artistic Director Tomer Zvulun, whose creative leadership continues to push the boundaries of what opera can be. Under his vision, Atlanta Opera has emerged as one of America’s leading companies — where tradition is a foundation and the future is unbound. The season opens with Fiddler on the Roof (Sept. 4–Oct. 5), presented in collaboration with the Alliance Theatre. Rich with folkloric spirit, musical grandeur, and emotional depth, Fiddler is not just a beloved musical — it’s an operatic story of resilience and transformation, fully at home in this company’s hands. In November, audiences are treated to a magical double offering: Philip Glass’

movie-opera inspired by Jean Cocteau’s 1946 film, La Belle et la Bête (Nov. 15), followed by Verdi’s masterwork La traviata (Nov. 8–16), in a stirring production that gives full voice to love, loss, and redemption. Spring brings the sparkling intrigue of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro (March 14– 22), where wit and romance collide under the surface of class and politics. Then, a new production of Puccini’s Turandot (April 25–May 3) storms the stage with towering vocals and stunning spectacle. With a twist to the opera’s conclusion, Zvulun breaks boundaries again in this powerful opera. The season climaxes with Wagner’s Twilight of the Gods (May 30–June 7), the awe-inspiring finale to Atlanta’s first full Ring Cycle — an operatic achievement years in the making, and a crowning testament to Zvulun’s long-range artistic ambition. The Atlanta Shakespeare Company: More Than Just The Bard id Shakespeare write A Christmas Carol?” It’s a common question The Atlanta Shakespeare Company hears anytime they produce a non-Shakespeare show. It makes sense, his name is in the name of the company and the building ASC has performed in since 1989. However, the tagline for the company has always been “Shakespeare and the classics in a casual Tavern atmosphere.” They certainly are not questioning the efficacy of their lifelong dedication to the works of William Shakespeare. The fact remains that with twelve months of programming to present each year, more than any other theatre company in the state, there are opportunities to step out and present something that is “Shakespeare Adjacent” (aka “Nearspeare”). Or maybe they just want to tell a timeless tale that Shakespeare didn’t write. It’s a benefit to everyone from educators being able to bring their students to see, for instance, Tennessee Williams’ “The Glass Menagerie” at a theatre they trust, to wellseasoned subscribers who are interested in expanding their horizons, to actors stretching their performing chops in a new way. For families who want to introduce

their kids to the theatre, ASC regularly offers summertime adventure classic tales, like Ken Ludwig’s Sherwood: the Adventures of Robin Hood and his version of Alexandre Dumas’ The Three Musketeers. Of course, let’s not forget about Charles Dickens every December for the past 20+ years! Audiences are on board for the variety. For two Octobers in a row, ASC, along with Havoc Movement, presented a month-long version of Dracula: The Failings of Men that was the quickestselling show in their history. In April 2024, along with Belle Esprit, ASC thrilled audiences with a fresh new adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility, and in May 2025 they brought Pride & Prejudice to life. Of course, for those “Shakespeare-specific” kinds of patrons, The Atlanta Shakespeare Company will always produce more ‘Speare every year than any other company in the country. After all, they are the only Shakespeare company in the world to have completed his 39-play canon...twice. It IS the SHAKESPEARE Tavern Playhouse after all. ABTF Celebrates 14 Years of Bold Innovation at the New LaTanya Richardson Jackson and Samuel L. Jackson Performing Arts Center

he Atlanta Black Theatre Festival (ABTF) is proud to announce its 14th annual festival at the new LaTanya Richardson Jackson and Samuel L. Jackson Performing Arts Center. This state-ofthe-art, renovated venue reflects the festival’s ongoing commitment to showcasing the arts in a setting that is as daring and innovative as the stories it elevates. This year’s festival emphasizes a curated experience that is intentionally intimate and bold, with carefully selected programming designed to foster deeper connections between audiences and artists. “This space reflects our new vision of honoring traditions while creating a platform for cutting-edge, groundbreaking storytelling,” says Toni Simmons Henson, festival director. “Every planning detail is attended to amplify the voices that push artistic boundaries and inspire change.” A key highlight of this year’s festival is its partnership with Spelman College, which is part of the Atlanta University Center. This partnership creates a pipeline of exposure and opportunities for students to engage directly with arts practitioners through internships, mentorships, and skill-

building workshops. The partnership aims to cultivate the next generation of Black leaders in digital and live performance. Building on the legacy of the past 14 years, ABTF will feature five fully mounted productions, a full-day Creative Arts Conference at the Hilton Atlanta Airport with readings of original works, professional development workshops, a short film showcase, the 7th annual Dr. Doris Derby Collegiate Monologue Competition, and an outdoor Black Art and Business Expo. The event will culminate in an Awards and Cabaret Gala featuring the new Netflix breakout star, Ursula O.
