Tomer Zvulun’s Semele Set to Dazzle Atlanta Audiences
Tomer Zvulun, celebrated for his cinematic storytelling and innovative productions, is staging his acclaimed production of Handel’s Semele with The Atlanta Opera on June7-15, 2025. As the Carl W. Knobloch, Jr. General and Artistic Director of The Atlanta Opera, Zvulun has elevated the company to national prominence, securing its place among the country’s top ten opera houses. Now, he returns with a fresh interpretation of Semele that promises to captivate audiences. Starring the internationally renowned artist, Lauren Snouffer, this production will showcase her “radiant lyric soprano” (Dallas Morning News) and expressive depth. Known for her exceptional command of Baroque repertoire, Snouffer’s portrayal of Semele — a woman whose ambition and passion lead to divine tragedy — will bring emotional intensity to the role. The opera is a dazzling blend of romance, betrayal, and divine spectacle, enriched by Handel’s sumptuous score.
At its premier this 2015 Zvulun production at Seattle Opera received glowing reviews, described by Opera Warhorses as “saucy” and “ingeniously staged.” His approach highlighted the opera’s wit, passion, and dramatic
intensity, blending Baroque elegance with contemporary theatricality.
For its Atlanta debut, Zvulun has assembled an exceptional creative team, including choreographer Amir Levy, scenic and projection designer Erhard Rom, costume designer Vita Tzykun, and lighting designer Robert Wierzel. Together, they will craft a visually striking and emotionally resonant production, bringing Semele’s mythological world to life with imaginative staging and dynamic storytelling. Audiences can expect a performance rich in theatrical energy, striking design, and expressive movement — hallmarks of Zvulun’s directorial style.
As The Atlanta Opera continues its rise as a leader in the industry, Semele will be a season highlight, offering an immersive and vibrant operatic experience. Don’t miss this stunning production — Semele in Atlanta will be a night to remember.
Performances at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center are Saturday, June 7 at 8 p.m.; Tuesday, June 10 at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, June 13 at 8 p.m.; and Sunday, June 15 at 3 p.m.. Tickets start at $52 and are available by calling 404-881-8885 or online at AtlantaOpera.org

Atlanta Jazz Festival Inc. presents a concert with Robert Glasper and Baby Rose at Symphony Hall on May 23
Enjoy an exhilarating evening and kick off Memorial Day Weekend with a special concert event featuring pianist Robert Glasper and vocalist Baby Rose. Presented by Atlanta Jazz Festival Inc., the concert will take place at Atlanta Symphony Hall on Friday, May 23 at 8 p.m.
To purchase your tickets, visit atljazzfest.com
Jazz legend Robert Glasper is famed for his blend of traditional jazz and hip-hop. Evolution is his hallmark. To date, he boasts five Grammy wins, an Emmy Award for his song for Ava Duvernay’s critically hailed documentary “13th” with Common and Karriem Riggins, and a Peabody Award for his Composition of “Mr. Soul!”
Glasper’s breakout crossover album Black Radio changed the face of the genre and set a new expectation for what popular music could be. The album won him the Grammy for best R&B album and established him as the musician of choice for some of the world’s most iconic artists; notably playing keys throughout Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly, winning
another Grammy for the elastic track
“These Walls.” The ongoing Black Radio series has since become Glasper’s calling card, upholding a place at the heart of a trailblazing community: from long-time sonic brothers Mos Def and Bilal to legends including Ledisi, Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West, Jill Scott, and Erykah Badu.
Baby Rose takes healing music for the aimless and heartbroken. The Grammy nominated singer/songwriter and producer’s uniquely rich voice lends itself to her powerful, smoke-filled ballads lamenting lost loves and broken futures. Her new album, “SLOW BURN,” is a reflection of past loves, and represents venturing beyond boundaries, embracing freedom, and finding comfort.
“I make music to help myself get through things,” she says. The piercing honesty and vulnerability she brings to her lyrics in turn helps others process their feelings and find a place of healing.

Atlanta’s Arts Scene Steps Boldly “Sideways”: Voices of Note Presents a Dazzling Tribute to LGBTQ+ Storytelling in Broadway Sideways
In a city renowned for its cultural vibrancy, Broadway Sideways is poised to become one of Atlanta’s most talked-about theatrical events of 2025. Presented by Voices of Note (VoN — the powerhouse behind the Atlanta Women’s Chorus (AWC) and the Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus (AGMC — this original production brings inclusivity, creativity, and pure theatrical joy to the forefront.
Inspired by New York traditions like Broadway Backwards and Miscast, Broadway Sideways offers “that special spin only Voices of Note can provide.” Rather than simply reversing gender roles, the show casts against type — across gender, race, age, and body type — to expand the possibilities of who gets to tell which stories onstage.
“I didn’t want to do just another revue,” shares Jason Wynn, the show’s visionary director. “I wanted something that included social commentary… I want our audience to know that they are seen. I want them to see THEIR stories being told on this stage in a different way than it ever has before.”
The show will debut on Saturday, May 31 with shows at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Atlanta’s LGBTQ-centered Out Front Theatre. The production reimagines Broadway classics through a bold queer lens. In one scene, a traditionally upbeat number is recontextualized to reflect the realities of the AIDS epidemic. In another, a high-glamour solo explores gender identity beyond the binary. These narrative shifts move Broadway Sideways from parody to transformation.
David Aurilio, Executive Director of Voices of Note, adds “This show highlights what makes Atlanta’s arts scene so powerful — its inclusivity, its courage, and its love of storytelling. It pushes boundaries, redefines what we expect from narratives, and opens up conversations that inspire empathy, understanding, and growth.”
Whether you’re a Broadway lover, a champion of queer visibility, or simply looking for an unforgettable night at the theater, Broadway Sideways is more than a show — it’s a statement. Tickets at voicesofnote.org.

CCall and Response at the Michael C. Carlos Museum
all and Response features five objects from five distinct cultures, interpreted through a creative partnership between the Michael C. Carlos Museum and members of the Atlanta community. These objects “call” across time, inspiring responses that affirm cultural identity, prompt reflection, and invite reinterpretation within contemporary contexts.
The exhibition takes its title and organizing principle from the African American musical tradition of call and response — a participatory practice rooted in sub-Saharan Africa. In this tradition, a musical phrase, or “call,” is answered by a corresponding phrase, creating a rhythmic, often improvisational dialogue. Similarly, the exhibition invites co-creators to “respond” to historical objects, forging new connections between past and present.
This experimental project marks a shift in the museum’s approach to interpretation, aligning with its commitment to broaden audiences and empower stakeholders. Rather than presenting objects as static relics, Call
and Response centers community voices to uncover fresh perspectives on familiar artifacts.
Through collaborations with community members, local organizations, visual and performing artists, scholars, and museum curators, the exhibition reimagines how museum collections can be engaged. The result is a dynamic model for shared storytelling that demonstrates the enduring relevance of historical art and artifacts.
Co-creators have responded to each object in diverse ways — through visual and performance art, research, and personal narrative — reminding us that the meaning of an object is never fixed. It grows and changes through continued engagement and reinterpretation.
Call and Response asks: Whose voices are heard in the stories museums tell? On view through June 22, 2025, this exhibition invites you to experience the power of dialogue, creativity, and community at the Carlos Museum.

A Super-Sized Atlanta Fringe Festival Lands May 27
The 13th annual festival triples the number of artists, expands from one to two weeks
For 13 years, the Atlanta Fringe Festival has encouraged the live performing artists it hosts to push the envelope and dream big. In 2025, the Festival is taking its own advice. After over a decade of hosting theatre artists, dancers, puppeteers, acrobats and more from across the globe, ATL Fringe 2025 is expanding from around 20 artists to 60, presented over a sprawling two week festival in and around Little Five Points and East Atlanta Village.
The idea came to Executive Director Diana Brown while attending the Edinburgh Fringe Festival last summer and speaking with other festival organizers from around the world. “That’s the mothership, that’s where Fringe started,” explained Brown. “The Fringe Festival there just completely takes over the city for a month, and everyone I spoke with said the same thing: Atlanta’s a huge city and your festival needs to be big enough to accommodate it.”
records for the number of artists applying from all over the world to be a part of the two-week theatre party. Of the 60 artists performing in this year’s festival, half are from the Atlanta area, with the others touring in from all over the US, UK and Canada.
“I love the idea of being surrounded by other performers that are experimenting, pushing boundaries, and being bold and silly on stage. Atlanta has such a rich cultural history and a vibrant, ever-evolving arts scene. It’s a city buzzing with creativity, and I’m thrilled to get to bring my show there,” says Tozy, a clown magician from Reno, Nevada, touring her show. The
It’s a massive undertaking, and a big bet that’s already paying dividends, with the festival shattering previous years’
Curious Revelations and Astounding Insights of the Great Shamé. Amanda Jaquez of Marietta, bringing her show Verity High: Cancelled, agrees. “Festivals like the Atlanta Fringe are where theater comes alive in its rawest, most exciting form. It’s where new works can be explored, tested, and finetuned in front of an audience that is hungry for bold, original storytelling. Don’t miss a minute of Fringe. An Evening with Mozart: A Celebration of Choral Masterpieces
The Atlanta Master Chorale proudly presents “An Evening with Mozart,” a spectacular showcase of the composer’s most beloved choral works, including his iconic Requiem and Coronation Mass, on Friday, May 2 and Saturday, May 3 at 8 p.m. This extraordinary concert, planned by our Artistic Director, Dr. Eric Nelson, will be led by distinguished guest conductor Dr. Deanna Joseph, Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Georgia State University. While audiences worldwide cherish Mozart’s piano concertos, symphonies, and operas, his profound contribution to choral music remains one of classical music’s greatest treasures. From his first Latin Mass setting — composed at the astonishing age of 12 — to his final, unfinished Requiem, Mozart’s choral compositions reveal the composer’s genius throughout his career. This concert brings together choir, soloists and orchestra to perform two of Mozart’s greatest choral works.
Our guest conductor, Dr. Deanna Joseph, brings exceptional expertise to the podium. As Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Georgia State
University, she has earned international recognition for her artistry. Under her direction, the GSU University Singers have earned prestigious invitations to perform at the American Choral Directors Association national conferences in 2021 and 2025.
Dr. Joseph’s ensembles have competed successfully on the world stage, including winning first place at the Marktoberdorf International Chamber Choir Competition in 2017 and placing second at La Florilège Vocal de Tours, where she was honored with the Prix du chef de choer (conducting prize).
Her interpretations have been praised for “great musicality, excellent intonation, clear diction, and a healthy and beautiful pallet of tone colors” (The Choral Scholar). Dr. Joseph’s extensive experience conducting choral-orchestral masterworks, including Mozart’s Requiem, makes her the ideal artistic leader for this special concert.
Join us for an unforgettable evening celebrating Mozart’s choral genius through the inspired leadership of Dr. Deanna Joseph.
“An Evening with Mozart” will take place at the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts. For concert and ticket information, visit AtlantaMasterChorale.org/concerts.

The Alliance Theatre’s Upcoming World Premiere Musical, MILLIONS
Inspired by Frank Cottrell Boyce’s beloved novel and film, directed by Danny Boyle, MILLIONS is a hilarious and heartwarming new musical about two brothers, their newly widowed father, a train robber, and (possibly) a miracle. The production features a book by Tony Award winner Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone, The Prom), an original score by Tony Award winner Adam Guettel (Floyd Collins, The Light in the Piazza, Days of Wine and Roses), and direction by Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher (South Pacific, Fiddler on the Roof, To Kill a Mockingbird).
“At its heart, MILLIONS is about possibility — what we do with the unexpected, how can we choose generosity over greed, and how love finds us when we least expect it,” said Tinashe Kajese-Bolden, Jennings Hertz Artistic Director. “MILLIONS is a story about faith — not just in the divine, but in each other, in the unknown, in the belief that when the world shifts beneath us, we can still find solid ground.”
MILLIONS will have its world premiere on The Coca-Cola Stage at Alliance Theatre May 9 – June 15, 2025. Opening Night
creative team, and staff at the first rehearsal for the Alliance Theatre’s 2024/25 Season production of Millions.

“What struck us most about this piece was its unapologetic heart,” said Christopher Moses, Jennings Hertz Artistic Director. “Anchored by the faith of a child wanting nothing more than to be good and to see his mother again, MILLIONS invites us to turn from reckless self-interest to boundless love. To tell such a miraculous story, you need an equally miraculous cast. We’re thrilled for Atlanta to experience such musical theatre royalty on our Coca-Cola Stage.”

The Legacy of Robert Shaw: How Michael O’Neal and The Michael O’Neal Singers Carry on Atlanta’s Choral Tradition
Robert Shaw was more than a conductor. He was a force of nature in the world of choral music. His deep understanding of the human voice, his unwavering commitment to excellence, and his ability to inspire singers left an indelible mark on choral music in America. Nowhere is his legacy more alive than in Atlanta, where Michael O’Neal carries forward Shaw’s vision through The Michael O’Neal Singers.
O’Neal had the rare privilege of studying under Shaw, not only learning the mechanics of conducting but absorbing Shaw’s philosophy on what choral singing could be: an act of unity, storytelling, and deep emotional expression. Singing with Shaw was transformative, shaping O’Neal’s approach to music and leadership in ways that continue to resonate decades later.
Through The Michael O’Neal Singers, O’Neal has built something special. Each concert is crafted with care, designed not just to entertain but to move audiences in unexpected ways. The ensemble blends professional-caliber musicianship with genuine warmth, making every performance an experience rather than just a concert. Their recent performance of Mozart’s Requiem in March showcased their dedication to bring-
ing timeless masterworks to life with depth and precision. Looking ahead, they continue this tradition of meaningful collaboration with their upcoming May 4 concert featuring Banks and Shane, an Atlanta institution in their own right.
This collaboration is more than a performance. It is a meeting of two legacies that have shaped Atlanta’s music scene in different but complementary ways. Banks and Shane have brought people together through their signature blend of folk, Americana, and storytelling for decades. The Michael O’Neal Singers share that same commitment to creating connection through song. On May 4, these two musical forces will join, celebrating Atlanta’s artistic spirit by blending choral richness with the heartfelt authenticity of folk music.
Atlanta’s music scene thrives on continuity. Artists build on the foundations of those who came before, carrying forward traditions while making them their own. Thanks to leaders like Michael O’Neal and performers like Banks and Shane, Robert Shaw’s influence is not just remembered. It is alive, thriving, and inspiring new generations of singers and audiences alike.

Anonymous Fragments,on view through June 29
Anonymous Fragments,on view through June 29, presents a new series of paintings and drawings by Timothy Hull, inspired by ancient Greek vase fragments in the Carlos Museum’s collection. Blending images of same-sex lovers and Dionysian revelry with histories of collecting and antiquities trafficking, Hull reconstructs a queer art history grounded in antiquity—one where bodies, identities, and desires are fluid, expansive, and playful. At the same time, the exhibition reflects on the contested trade in ancient Greek vases, reminding us that all museum objects are out of context — inviting reinterpretation and accruing meaning over time.
