tlanta Ballet has a long history of making The Nutcracker part of Atlanta audiences’ holiday tradition that goes back over 60 years. In 1958, Robert Barnett left George Balanchine’s storied New York City Ballet to become a principal dancer and associate director with Atlanta Civic Ballet, later renamed Atlanta Ballet, and in 1962 he was named artistic director. During his tenure, he helped Atlanta Ballet secure its professional status and gifted both the organization and local audiences with the magic of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker. Atlanta Ballet was the first regional company outside of New York City Ballet to perform this famed version of the holiday classic when Mr. Balanchine granted Mr. Barnett, his original Sugar Cane male soloist in the production, exclusive permission to restage the ballet in 1959. Now, 67 years later, Atlanta Ballet brings a Nutcracker for the next generation to the stage at Cobb Energy Centre. Awardwinning choreographer Yuri Possokhov reinvented this classical ballet in 2018 exclusively for Atlanta Ballet with intricately designed costumes, larger-than-life sets, advanced lighting and state-of-the-art video projections. The Washington Post lauded Atlanta Ballet’s The Nutcracker, claiming it “tops them all as the most entertaining as well as the smartest.”

As one of the few regional Nutcracker productions with live music, the Atlanta Ballet Orchestra will perform the traditional Tchaikovsky score bringing the beautiful and intricate ballet to life. The Atlanta Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker has been hailed as one of the most technically advanced versions of the show and promises to transport audiences to a charming yuletide German city for its whimsical story involving an unexpected gift, a mysterious journey and two acts of enchantment. Snowstorms, dancing dolls, bullfights, snake charmers and much more bring panoramic adventure to the stage. A winter wonderland awaits you, where falling snowflakes, twirling flowers and spinning stars come to life in this reimagined production. Travel with Marie and her Nutcracker Prince through a dream-like world of delights that is nothing shy of extravagant. A Different Kind of Holiday Story

E

very holiday season brings familiar traditions: twinkling lights, favorite songs and beloved stories revisited year after year. But for audiences looking for something beyond the usual seasonal fare, All Is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 offers something unexpected: a story born from one of history’s darkest moments that still captures the music, warmth and hope of Christmas. Set against the devastation of World War I, All Is Calm recounts the remarkable true events of Christmas Eve 1914, when soldiers emerged from their trenches and for a few extraordinary hours, laid down their weapons. Enemy soldiers met in No Man’s Land, exchanged greetings and gifts, and joined together in song. Created by Peter Rothstein, the work draws from firsthand accounts, weaving soldiers’ letters, diaries, poetry and historical documents together with more than 30 songs from the period. Familiar carols mingle with soldiers’ songs in an intimate theatrical experience driven not by elaborate spectacle, but by voices, music and the words of the men who lived through the war.

6

That unusual combination of history and holiday tradition is precisely what makes All Is Calm such a compelling addition to the season. Writing for New York Theater, critic Jonathan Mandell called the work a “beautifully sung, intelligent Christmas concert.” At its heart, the story explores many of the themes that draw us back to holiday traditions year after year: hope, generosity, connection and the possibility of finding common ground. This December, The Atlanta Opera and Theatrical Outfit join forces to bring All Is Calm to audiences at The Balzer Theater at Herren’s. For those searching for a holiday outing beyond the usual, or a meaningful experience to give someone instead of another present to unwrap, the production offers something distinctive: an evening of theater rooted in history, music and a remarkable reminder of our shared humanity. All Is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 runs December 2-27, making it the perfect opportunity to add a different kind of story to this year’s holiday traditions. F

or decades, the Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus has helped Atlanta welcome the holidays with music that stirs the heart, lifts the spirit, and brings people together. That cherished tradition returns Friday, December 4, 2026, and Saturday, December 5, as the AGMC presents its 46th Annual Holiday Concert at the Cathedral of St. Philip. The beauty of the Cathedral provides a setting for one of the city’s most anticipated seasonal events. This year, the chorus will be joined by a live orchestra, adding richness, scale, and energy to a program of beloved holiday favorites and inspiring contemporary works. Audiences can expect the signature combination that has defined AGMC for nearly five decades: exceptional music, storytelling, irresistible humor, and moments powerful enough to produce plenty of goosebumps. Often described as Atlanta’s unofficial kickoff to the holiday season, the annual concert has become much more than a performance. For longtime patrons, it is a treasured tradition shared with

8

family and friends. For first-time guests, it is an invitation into an experience filled with warmth, wonder, and belonging. From jubilant musical celebrations to quiet moments of reflection, the evening captures the many emotions that make the season meaningful. “The AGMC holiday show is always full of surprises,” said Donald Milton III, artistic director of the Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus. “New arrangements of holiday favorites, emotional experiences of beauty, and you never know what costumes or puppets might show up. Over 150 voices soaring over these orchestral arrangements is going to be very special.” The Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus 46th Annual Holiday Concert takes place from 8 to 10 p.m. on Friday, December 4, and at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday, December 5, at the Cathedral of St. Philip. Whether it continues a beloved tradition or begins a new one, audiences can expect to laugh, cry, and leave carrying the holiday spirit. For information and tickets visit www.voicesofnote.org.

Atlanta Master Chorale Welcomes Mezzo-Soprano Jamie Barton for a Christmas Celebration, Then Heads to Minneapolis

T

he most wonderful time of the year arrives with a joyful noise as Atlanta Master Chorale presents Christmas with Atlanta Master Chorale, featuring internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton as guest artist. Performances are Friday, December 11, at 8 p.m., and Saturday, December 12, at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., in Emerson Concert Hall at Emory University’s Schwartz Center for Performing Arts. Barton returns to the Schwartz Center stage after joining the Chorale for Christmas in 2013, the year she won both the main prize and the Song Prize at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition. A Georgia native, she has since received the 2015 Richard Tucker Award and the Metropolitan Opera’s 2017 Beverly Sills Artist Award. Her album Unexpected Shadows earned a 2022 Grammy nomination. Her radiant voice has graced the world’s great opera houses, and now it lends its glow to the season of carols and candlelight. The program ranges from the jingling cheer of “Jingle Bells” to the hushed wonder of “O Holy Night.” It promises songs of hope, joy and peace, and a chance to gather with family and friends and listen for the song of the angels. For many Atlanta families, it is a

treasured holiday tradition. The merriment comes with national recognition. Atlanta Master Chorale has been selected as a participating choir at the American Choral Directors Association’s 2027 National Conference, “Singing Through The Ages,” in Minneapolis, March 7-10, 2027. Artistic Director Eric Nelson, who also directs choral studies at Emory University, leads the ensemble. The honor follows the Chorale’s 2017 appearance at ACDA’s national conference in Minneapolis, where it was one of fewer than 30 choirs selected nationwide. For more than four decades, the Chorale has lived by its motto, “where music touches spirit.” It received Chorus America’s Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence in 2013. Tickets are $42 for adults, with $10 student and youth tickets. Livestreamonly access is $20, so loved ones far from Atlanta can share the season. Reserve tickets for Christmas with Atlanta Master Chorale or visit the Atlanta Master Chorale website for the full 2026-2027 season. Tickets are also available by phone at the Schwartz Center box office, 404-727-5050, Monday through Friday, noon to 6 p.m.

The 2026/27 Season of the Alliance Theatre Continues with New Musicals and World Premieres

T

he 58th season of the Alliance Theatre continues in January 2027 on the Goizueta Stage with a new production of LYLE, LYLE, CROCODILE: THE MUSICAL (Jan 23-Feb 14, 2027). Inspired by Bernard Waber’s beloved picture books and the motion picture of the same name, LYLE, LYLE, LYLE, CROCODILE: THE MUSICAL is packed with humor, heart, and showstopping tunes that will have audiences roaring along. On the Hertz Stage, the Alliance will produce the world-premiere play, MISEDUCATED (Jan 27-Feb 21, 2027). Based on Brandon P. Fleming’s memoir and written by Rudi Goblen, MISEDUCATED is an electrifying theatrical experience that

follows a debate coach as he guides his students toward a high-stakes Harvard competition. Through debate, music, and spoken word, MISEDUCATED reveals the transformative power of mentorship and the courage it takes to claim your voice. On the Coca-Cola Stage, Alliance will produce the spectacular world premiere musical ALICE IN NEVERLAND (Feb 20-Apr 4, 2027) — a sequel to Alice in Wonderland and a prequel to Peter Pan. ALICE IN NEVERLAND is a sweeping new musical that explores the magic of reclaiming childhood — and the sacrifice required to never grow up. Shen Yun Returns to Atlanta in 2027: Experience China Before Communism

I

n January 2027, Shen Yun Performing Arts returns to Atlanta, inviting audiences to experience the beauty and wonder of China’s 5,000-year-old civilization through an extraordinary combination of classical Chinese dance, music, storytelling, and visual artistry. Before decades of communist rule, China was known as the “Land of the Divine,” where generations drew inspiration from values such as compassion, loyalty, courage, and faith. Shen Yun brings this rich cultural heritage to the stage, presenting stories and traditions that have been passed down through thousands of years. At the heart of every Shen Yun performance is classical Chinese dance, one of the world’s most expressive and technically demanding dance forms. Dancers perform intricate movements, dramatic leaps, flips, and tumbling techniques while portraying characters ranging from legendary heroes and imperial figures to ordinary people facing extraordinary challenges. Shen Yun’s colorful handmade costumes and patented animated backdrops transform the stage into sweeping landscapes, heavenly realms, ancient palaces, and scenes from different

16

periods of Chinese history. The performers appear to move seamlessly between the stage and the digital backdrop, creating an experience that combines traditional performing arts with innovative technology. Music is another distinctive part of the performance. A live orchestra accompanies the dancers, uniquely blending the sounds of traditional Chinese instruments, including the erhu and pipa, with a full Western orchestral ensemble. Original compositions help bring each story and dance to life. Each Shen Yun production is completely new every season, featuring a collection of short dance pieces, musical performances, ancient legends, and stories inspired by both China’s past and present. Audiences can expect moments of beauty, humor, drama, courage, and hope throughout the performance. Shen Yun will appear in metro Atlanta from January 8–17, 2027, with performances at the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center and Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. Discover a civilization of breathtaking beauty and experience China before communism. For performance schedules, tickets, and additional information, visit ShenYun.com/Atlanta.

From Screen to Stage: Anastasia Comes to the Byers Theatre in Sandy Springs

D

uring the movie animation boom of the nineties, 1997’s “Anastasia” was an outlier success in cinemas. It was directed by former Disney animators, and the film’s songs were by a pair of composers not really known outside of Broadway circles. Still the film won over audiences, becoming an even bigger hit on home video. (The clamshell VHS box cover is still iconic all on its own.) A decade ago, the films’ original songwriters, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty got together with their frequent collaborator Terrence McNallay and revisioned the film for the Broadway stage. They ditched the film’s over-the-top villain (Rasputin, and his talking bat sidekick Bartok) and crafted a more modern, romantic and political narrative that would take the female title character on a journey worthy of the Broadway stage. This December, City Springs Theatre Company will take audiences from St. Petersburg to Paris, presenting the sweeping stage musical in the area’s first major production outside of the original Broadway tour. Directing and choreographing the production is

Broadway legend and Tony Awardrecipient Baayork Lee, who has previously helmed CSTC’s productions of A Chorus Line, Beauty and the Beast and The Wizard of Oz. Stepping into the title role is Amanda Fallon Smith, who previously played Nessa in the National Tour of Wicked, and in CSTC’s productions of Beauty and the Beast and Jersey Boys. Making his CSTC debut as Vlad is Nathan Madden, who has appeared on Broadway in Chicago and Hello, Dolly! Atlanta-area favorite Terry Burrell will play the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna. With its sweeping score (including the hit songs “Once Upon a December” and “Journey to the Past”) and stunning costumes, Anastasia offers something for longtime fans and first-time audiences alike. So bring the family, and get ready as Anastasia runs December 11–27 at the Byers Theatre at the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center. 2026-27 Jazz Series, Joe Alterman, photo courtesy of Ticketmaster

New! Jazz Sessions with Joe Alterman

J

oe Alterman is a storyteller. For the jazz pianist, whose hard-bop piano improvisations usually seem tinged with a sunny optimism, weaving an informative narrative around the music is a crucial part of performance. “I’ve realized how much it can add to the experience,” he said, “both in terms of feeling closer to the music and the person that you’re watching.” He’s not interested in long pedantic digressions about tunes or short, pithy remarks about songs in his setlist; he’s trying to reach an entertaining, thoughtprovoking middle ground. Talking is part of the structure of his concerts. It’s how he works with the music to create a rewarding and fulfilling evening that leaves the audience with something to ponder, to reflect upon, when the night is over. But he’s certainly never told stories about classical music. Starting in January, Alterman and his trio will bring jazz-influenced takes on melodies by Bach, Brahms and Rachmaninoff on Fridays at the Goizueta Stage for Youth & Families in the Woodruff Arts Center. Presented by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Alterman plans to

connect classical melodies to the world of improvisation, breaking down genre barriers for three wide-ranging evenings of music. “Everyone says these guys improvised, but we didn’t get to hear it,” he said of the classical composers he’s targeted for musical profiles. “They probably didn’t play their pieces the same way every time.” Jazz Sessions: Joe Alterman & Friends • JAN 8 | Inspired by Rachmaninoff • FEB 26 | Inspired by Brahms • APR 23 | Inspired by Bach For the Goizueta concerts, Alterman will be joined by drummer Justin Chersarek and bassist Kevin Smith. Chersarek began his 15-year professional association with Alterman in 2011. “We just really connected musically,” Chersarek said. “He genuinely puts his joy and his passion into what he’s playing. He’s a funny guy, loves comedy. And I feel the humor — the spirit of humor and positivity and play in what he’s doing.” Learn more about the ASO’s Jazz Sessions with Joe Alterman at aso.org/ jazz-sessions. 24

glethorpe University offers yearround opportunities to experience concerts, performances and art exhibitions in a setting that feels different from the city’s biggest stages: intimate, evocative, and memorable. At the heart of campus arts is the Conant Performing Arts Center, the university’s premier 550-seat venue, which hosts student and professional productions and musical concerts throughout the year. The season gets swinging Oct. 29 with Jazz Night at Town Brookhaven, a free outdoor concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. Just down Peachtree Road from campus, the evening brings Oglethorpe’s musical programming into the Brookhaven community. Back on campus, the spotlight shifts to the stage as Oglethorpe University Theatre presents “Cyrano de Bergerac” Nov. 13, 14, 20, 21 and 22 at the Conant Performing Arts Center. Cyrano, a brilliant wordsmith convinced of his own ugliness, secretly loves Roxane but instead lends his eloquence to the handsome yet inarticulate Christian, creating a love triangle built on attraction, deception and the power of language. Martin Crimp’s bold adaptation reimagines the classic story through

spoken word, contemporary poetry and rap, creating a world where words are everything. Across campus, the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art offers its own slate of exhibitions and special programming throughout the year. On Nov. 7 at noon, OUMA Community Days brings the campus and community together with free food from local vendors, student art pop-up shops, games and live music. Later in the month, the museum becomes a performance space for the Skylight Concert Series with Voices Within on Nov. 22 at 3 p.m. The concert invites audiences to experience live music surrounded by art, while the museum’s exhibitions and lectures offer even more reasons to visit throughout the year. Oglethorpe’s fall arts calendar closes Dec. 7 with the Oglethorpe University Musical Theatre Showcase in Lupton Auditorium on the university’s campus. The free musical theatre performance offers one more opportunity to see Oglethorpe performers take the stage before the year ends. All Oglethorpe campus events take place at 4484 Peachtree Road NE, Atlanta, GA 30319. Explore Oglethorpe’s complete arts calendar at oglethorpe.edu/arts.

2025 AWC Holiday Performance

Atlanta Women’s Chorus Invites the Community to Find ‘Peace and Joy’

A

mid the noise and to-do lists of the holiday season, the Atlanta Women’s Chorus invites Atlanta to slow down and reconnect. On Saturday, December 19, 2026, AWC presents “Peace and Joy” at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal Church, an afternoon of music celebrating hope, belonging, and the beauty of gathering together. Filled with warmth and reflection, “Peace and Joy” is designed as both a holiday celebration and a welcome pause. Through a selected program, the chorus will explore the emotions and traditions that give the season its meaning — from quiet moments of contemplation to joyful expressions of community. Audiences can expect harmonies, inspiring musical selections, and the blend of artistry and connection that the Atlanta Women’s Chorus brings to every performance. “Holiday music carries so many different memories and emotions, and that gives us a wonderful range to explore as an ensemble,” said Dr. Melissa Arasi, artistic director of the Atlanta Women’s Chorus. “We want audiences to hear the warmth and beauty of these voices, but we also want them to experience the personality of

AWC — the connection, energy, and sense of celebration that these singers bring to the stage.” That invitation feels timely. During a season that can bring celebration alongside stress, uncertainty, or longing, “Peace and Joy” makes room for the full range of human experience. The concert reminds audiences that peace is not merely the absence of noise and joy is not limited to perfect circumstances. Both can be discovered through music, shared presence, and the reassurance that no one celebrates — or carries the season — alone. The Atlanta Women’s Chorus has used music to create spaces where people feel seen, connected, and uplifted. “Peace and Joy” continues that tradition while offering a seasonal experience for longtime supporters, families, friends, and first-time guests alike. “Peace and Joy” takes place from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 19, at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal Church. Come gather, breathe, listen, and leave renewed for the holidays ahead. For information and tickets visit www.voicesofnote.org.

Suzi Bass Awards 2025 Highlights, Robert Mitchel Owenby Photography

More than One Night: Building Connections Across Atlanta Theatre

E

ach November, Atlanta’s professional theatre community comes together for the Suzi Bass Awards. Actors and directors mingle with designers, stage managers, producers and theatre patrons. Awards are presented, but just as important are the reunions, introductions and conversations among people whose work is usually scattered across stages throughout metro Atlanta. For more than two decades, the Suzis have celebrated excellence in Atlanta professional theatre. Increasingly, though, we are thinking about the other 364 days. Atlanta doesn’t lack theatre. On any given weekend, audiences can find new plays and classics, musicals and Shakespeare, puppetry, theatre for young audiences, and work in spaces they may never have visited. Artists move among those theatres constantly, creating a community that is far more interconnected than audiences may realize. The opportunity for the Suzis is to help strengthen those connections — between theatres, artists and audiences. That thinking is behind several new yearround efforts. Suzi Recommended helps audiences discover productions while they are still onstage. The new Atlanta Professional Theatre Calendar brings

together professional productions from across the metro area, whether they are part of the Suzi judging process. And The Suzi Scene offers stories, news and a closer look at what is happening throughout Atlanta theatre. Connection also happens away from the stage. This fall, a Suzi Salon at Emory University’s Michael C. Carlos Museum brought together artists, judges, scholars and audience members for a conversation about classical theatre. It was a reminder that sometimes building a theatre community simply means creating a place for people to gather. The annual awards will always be at the heart of the Suzis. Recognition matters, and so does the chance to celebrate exceptional work together. But a theatre community is built all year long. A calendar can lead someone to a theatre they have never visited. A story can introduce an audience member to an artist or an idea. A conversation can create a new connection. Atlanta already has remarkable theatre. Our opportunity is to help more people find it — and one another. For more info visit us at TheSuzis.org.

F

ourteen years after setting up shop in Sandy Springs, and after a Georgia Ensemble Theatre short-term residency, the Act3 Playhouse at 6285R Roswell Road is expanding the length and variety of the theatre’s season through additional resident and visiting theater groups. “This new approach allows multiple theater companies, performing arts organizations and individual artists to offer patrons a variety of entertainment options, while each bears only a fraction of the annual operations,” said Act3 Board Member Cheri Morris. Local organization 360 Arts Blvd is launching a collaborative arts venue at the theatre, bringing together multiple production companies and a youth conservatory under one shared calendar. Two resident theatre companies anchor the calendar: • Ovations Theatre - Stand-up, sketch comedy, and theatrical productions is the resident Mainstage anchor for both Mainstage productions and comedy programming. • Spotlight Conservatory - Brings theatre education to the Act3 Playhouse for youth and adults alike, with classes in acting, musical theatre, and technical theatre.

Additional partners bring Mainstage productions and limited engagements throughout the year: • Snug Concerts - Intimate live concerts in cozy, small-scale settings • The Overture Series - Concert versions of rarely staged musicals • Mad Artists’ Entertainment Producing high-quality musicals and plays Cabarets, recitals, and smaller productions from other local groups round out the calendar. The Act3 Playhouse is also now home for the BLVD, a membership community for creative professionals of all disciplines and the people who support them. BLVD members work together to equip one another with the entrepreneurial skills, resources, and peer network necessary to build the infrastructure for a sustainable creative career. The intimate, 100-seat Act3 Playhouse is located in the heart of Sandy Springs in Sandy Springs Plaza at 6285R Roswell Road (enter through the breezeway next to Five Guys).
