Tradition Reimagined: The Atlanta Opera and Alliance Theatre Present a Bold New Fiddler on the Roof

This fall, two of Atlanta’s leading arts institutions — The Atlanta Opera and Alliance Theatre — join forces for a powerhouse production of Fiddler on the Roof, running September 4 through October 5 on the Coca-Cola Stage at the Alliance Theatre.

A timeless classic brought vividly to life by an extraordinary creative team, Fiddler explores the deep ties of family, faith, and community in a world on the brink of change. At the center of this new production is Tevye, the beloved dairyman navigating the shifting sands of tradition and modernity.

International television and film star Itzik Cohen (known for his portrayal of Captain Gabi Ayub in Netflix’s Fauda) steps into the role with gravity and warmth, opposite Broadway and symphonic legend Debbie Gravitte (A Tony and Grammy Award winner for Jerome Robbins’ Broadway) as Golde. Their chemistry anchors a cast of acclaimed performers from stage and screen, including Mia Pinero (West Side Story), Coby Getzug (The Book of Mormon), Maya Jacobson (Yiddish Fiddler on the Roof), and Jeremy Radin (The Last Schwartz).

Directed by The Atlanta Opera’s Carl W. Knobloch, Jr. Artistic Director Tomer

Zvulun, Fiddler is staged with theatrical intimacy and cinematic sweep. Obi award-winning composer, lyricist, pianist, and conductor Or Matias, known for his work as music director on Broadway’s Natasha, and Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812, joins the team as Music Director. The design team — featuring Alexander Lisiyansky (scenic design), Vita Tzykun (costumes), and Thomas C. Hase (lighting) creates a richly textured world that honors the musical’s roots while speaking urgently to our times.

With a stirring score and iconic moments that blend humor, heartbreak, and hope, Fiddler on the Roof remains one of the most celebrated musicals of all time. Zvulun calls the show “a mirror to humanity,” a reflection of the joys and sorrows that bind us across generations. Tickets are on sale now at alliancetheatre.org and atlantaopera.org Don’t miss an unforgettable collaboration and experience Fiddler as you’ve never seen it — grounded in tradition, lifted by music, and bursting with life.

Presented by Teatro SEA of New York, this charming folkloric tale, rooted in Cuban and Puerto Rican traditions, follows Martina as she seeks love and self-confidence. With colorful puppetry and a celebration of Latinx culture, this joyful production encourages self-discovery and pride in one’s identity.

As autumn creeps in, the spooky season at the Center brings the return of the beloved 18+ cabaret, The Ghastly

Atlanta Symphony Orchestra with Music Director Nathalie Stutzmann

Come Symphony With Us: ASO’s 81st Season Celebrates Beethoven, American Voices, and Global Stars

Season highlights include the Beethoven Project finale with his Ninth Symphony and new America@250

series

Tickets are now on sale for the GRAMMY® Award-winning Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s 2025-26 Delta Classical Concert season — its 81st and Music Director Nathalie Stutzmann’s fourth at its helm. The orchestra continues its exploration of great choral masterworks with Stutzmann, concludes the Beethoven Project, launches the new America@250 series, and performs with world-class guest artists such as Lang Lang, Alisa Weilerstein, Leif Ove Andsnes, and Conrad Tao.

Music Director Nathalie Stutzmann said, “In my programs, we have a large focus on major choral works. Conducting the large forces on stage when we have the chorus of over one hundred and fifty singers with the orchestra is something I always cherish.”

Choral masterworks include Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Schubert’s Mass No. 2 in G major, and Bach’s Mass in B minor, about which Stutzmann said, “Bach’s B minor Mass is an absolutely

transcendental piece of music, and one of the most amazing choral writings of all times. I would say this is truly the consecration of a whole life in music dedicated to God.”

They also tackle works by American composers as part of the America@250 celebration that showcases the sounds that define our nation. From Bernstein to Artie Shaw, Ellington to Valerie Coleman, programs have been curated to reflect both historical and current American culture with a blend of classical, jazz and contemporary voices. The orchestra will tell the American story with prominent works that were commissioned and premiered in America, works by expats living in America, and works that shine a light on our multicultural tapestry.

From timeless classics to contemporary voices, this season offers something for everyone. Visit aso.org now to purchase single tickets and explore the full schedule.

See What’s Coming to the Alliance Theatre

The 2025-26 season of the Alliance Theatre includes beloved classics, new works, award-winning artists, plays for youth and family and a blockbuster world premiere musical. Following the run of the beloved musical, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF on the Coca-Cola Stage, the Alliance will produce the Atlanta premiere of the critically acclaimed thriller, COVENANT on the Hertz Stage. Described as “a striking Southern Gothic work” (The New York Times), COVENANT explores the gripping power of belief and the thin veil between rumor and truth. And for the holidays, the Alliance will, once again, present the Dickens classic, A CHRISTMAS CAROL on The Coca-Cola Stage.

In January 2026, the Alliance will celebrate the opening of the new Goizueta Stage for Youth & Families. The Goizueta Stage for Youth & Families will be a transformative space for Atlanta’s youngest patrons, featuring thoughtfully curated, year-round programming by Alliance Theatre and Atlanta Symphony Orchestra on the campus of the Woodruff Arts Center.

The Alliance will then present DUEL REALITY — an epic, cirque-infused performance inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. From The 7 Fingers, the high-flying troupe behind the awe-inspiring stunts in the Alliance’s Broadway musical Water for Elephants, DUEL REALITY will feature their signature electrifying mix of circus, storytelling, magic, dance, and acrobatics that dazzles the senses and stirs the heart.

On the Hertz Stage, the Alliance will produce the world premiere of the 22nd winner of its celebrated Alliance/ Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, FIRES, OHIO, by Beth Hyland from the University of California San Diego. Inspired by the classic family drama Uncle Vanya, FIRES, OHIO updates a beloved story for our painfully absurd present, taking a hilarious and heartfelt look at the natural (and personal) disasters that transform our everyday lives.

The season will close with the world premiere musical, BASURA. Nine-time Grammy Award® winner Gloria Estefan joins her daughter and acclaimed singer-songwriter Emily Estefan, to co-write the music and lyrics for BASURA, a powerful and bold new musical inspired by the true story of Paraguay’s Recycled Orchestra, where young artists turn scrap material into instruments and music into possibilities. Visit alliancetheatre.org for details and tickets.

Global Sounds and Bold Collaborations

Launch the 2025-2026 Candler Concert Series

This fall, the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts comes alive with the energy, connection, and power of live music during the 2025–2026 Candler Concert Series. Celebrating both classical mastery and contemporary innovation, this season features world-class musicians and dynamic cross-cultural collaborations that are not to be missed.

The series opens on Friday, September 26, with the Grammy Award–winning Harlem Quartet, joined by celebrated pianist Aldo López-Gavilán. This deeply personal musical partnership is rooted in the brotherhood and shared history of violinist Ilmar Gavilán and pianist-composer Aldo López-Gavilán — brothers raised in different countries, now reunited for a powerful program that blends European classical tradition with the rich rhythms of Cuba. Audiences will be treated to a concert featuring Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E-flat Major alongside López-Gavilán’s own

compositions that traverse jazz, Afro-Cuban, and classical styles.

Next, musical worlds come together in a thrilling performance by Third Coast Percussion and Salar Nader — a renowned tabla virtuoso and disciple of Zakir Hussain. On Friday, October 17, they perform Murmurs in Time, a groundbreaking new work by the late Hussain, blending the beauty and complexity of Hindustani classical music with the singular sound world of this acclaimed percussion ensemble. The evening also features newly commissioned works by Jessie Montgomery, Tigran Hamasyan, and Jlin, plus a stunning solo tabla set by Nader.

City Springs Theatre Company Presents The Return of Mel Brooks’ The Producers

Where did they go right?

At the age of 99, comedy legend Mel Brooks has done it all — and he has the awards to prove it. After winning an Oscar, a Grammy, and multiple Emmys during his illustrious career, he nabbed three Tony Awards in 2001 for producing and writing the musical juggernaut The Producers.

In 2001, The Producers earned acclaim for its bold and irreverent comedic style, playfully satirizing Broadway conventions, stereotypes, and cultural taboos. Nearly 25 years later, evolving social norms and heightened cultural awareness have sparked discussions about the show’s relevance and appropriateness in 2025.

City Springs Theatre Company (CSTC) is embracing the opportunity to revisit the iconic musical, presenting the first Atlantaarea production in over a decade, opening on September 5.

“Mel Brooks is a legend of American comedy, and The Producers remains one of the most entertaining musicals of all time,” says Executive Director Natalie DeLancey. “We hope audiences will come ready to enjoy the experience with open minds and a sense of humor, even as we navigate what comedy looks like today.”

The Sandy Springs-based company

is especially pleased that Brooks himself has actually endorsed the production and its creative team, which is led by a veteran of the original Broadway run of the show, director-choreographer James Gray

“I’ve directed this show and Mel’s other musical Young Frankenstein all over the globe,” says Gray, “and there is no single thing more fulfilling than hearing an audience roaring with laughter for two-and-a-half solid hours. Laughter is medicine from the gods, and Mel Brooks has written more prescriptions for us than anyone in the history of show business.”

In The Producers the laughs come at a rapid-fire pace, as a pair of producers attempt to create a sure-fire Broadway flop so that they can run away with the excess of cash they raise along the way. While things do not go as planned for the show’s titular characters, CSTC hopes their production will squeeze every single laugh out of the script and its audiences. Director Gray adds, “to paraphrase Brooks, if you like the show — tell everyone. If you don’t — keep your big mouth shut!”

The Producers runs September 5-21 at the Byers Theatre in Sandy Springs. Tickets are available at CitySpringsTheatre.com/TheProducers.

Innovation Meets Tradition in Atlanta Ballet Season Opener

Atlanta Ballet opens its 2025-26 season with a watershed mixedrepertory performance Balanchine & Peck, a series of three pieces showcasing the exquisite choreography of the renowned George Balanchine and three times Tony Award-winner Justin Peck.

Choreographed by the “father of American ballet”, George Balanchine, and set to music by Gabriel Fauré, Emeralds evokes the elegance and romanticism of France. The piece is a true reflection of the graceful Balanchine style performed by two leading couples, three soloists and a corps of 10 women in shimmering, gemstone-inspired costumes. Balanchine was inspired to create Emeralds through his friendship with famed jeweler Claude Arpels.

Contrasting with the delicate fluidity of Emeralds, In Creases is an abstract ballet by New York City Ballet’s resident choreographer, Justin Peck. In Creases, Peck’s first commissioned work for New York City Ballet following his time as a soloist, enchants audience members with

innovative choreography that manipulates dancers’ bodies to form geometric shapes and complex structures. Acclaimed pianists Western-Li Summerton and Dr. Hyunjung Rachel Chung will share the stage with the eight dancers to perform Four Movements for Two Pianos by Philip Glass.

The third work in this triple bill of masterworks is Prodigal Son by George Balanchine with music by Sergei Prokofiev. First premiering in 1929, the ballet tells a story of sin and redemption from the Biblical parable and was Balanchine’s last work for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. A pivotal work in Artistic Director Gennadi Nedvigin’s own dance career, Prodigal Son was one of the first Balanchine works to capture international attention and has continued to impact audiences for more than 95 years.

There will only be four performances Sept. 12-14 at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre.

Tickets are now on sale at atlantaballet.com.

Atlanta Master Chorale’s “Homecoming”: A Triumphant Return to Where We Belong

There’s something profoundly moving about the concept of homecoming — that magnetic pull toward familiar places, beloved faces, and the comfort of belonging. For Atlanta Master Chorale, their upcoming season premiere concert, “Homecoming,” embodies this sentiment in its most beautiful form.

After a year’s absence, beloved Artistic Director Eric Nelson returns to the podium, bringing the promise of an unforgettable celebration. This homecoming represents multiple layers of reunion: an artist returning to his calling, a choir reconnecting with its conductor, alumni and audience members coming home to transformative choral music.

The concert’s central theme revolves around the poignant line, “There is no such beauty as where you belong” — which makes homecoming so special. Whether it’s the graduate returning to their alma mater or the traveler stepping through their front door, homecoming speaks to our deepest need for connection and belonging.

For Atlanta Master Chorale, this homecoming carries particular significance. Nelson’s return marks not just the resumption of a professional relationship, but the restoration of an artistic partnership that has shaped the ensemble’s identity for 25 years. His year away has

heightened anticipation for this reunion, creating excitement that promises to translate into an extraordinary musical experience.

The program features “soul-stirring choral music that celebrates the universal longing for home,” tapping into emotions that resonate with every audience member. In a world that often feels fragmented, the concept of home becomes even more precious.

Choral music possesses a unique ability to create community and belonging. When voices blend in harmony, barriers dissolve, and strangers become connected through shared artistic experience. This homecoming concert promises to amplify that unity.

The timing couldn’t be more perfect. As autumn settles over Atlanta and the performing arts season begins, “Homecoming” serves as both welcome back and promise of musical riches to come. It’s an invitation to immerse yourself in an evening where music touches spirit.

The concerts are scheduled for October 10 and 11 at 8 p.m. at the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts. Don’t miss this highly anticipated reunion that promises to touch hearts and create lasting memories. Tickets are available at AtlantaMasterChorale.org/concerts.
