A Legacy in Motion: Ballethnic Steps Boldly into 2026

Murals, celebrations, and wellness initiatives set the tone as Ballethnic launched into a dynamic and purpose-driven 2026. The year began with a meaningful Kwanzaa celebration and youth wellness retreat, honoring African heritage while centering mental health and community care. Building on that momentum, Ballethnic marked a major milestone on Jan. 15 by celebrating 36 years of artistic excellence with the dedication of East Point’s newest mural, prominently displayed on the side of the Ballethnic studio. The mural stands as a vibrant tribute to dance, culture, and community — values that have defined the organization since its founding.

As Ballethnic continues to engage audiences through impactful programming, the company remains committed to paving the way for future generations to uphold and expand its legacy.

That commitment comes to life on stage with Ballethnic’s newest production, Heritage, Harmony, and the Classics — a powerful celebration of classical ballet, cultural heritage, and unity through dance. The performance re-stages early Ballethnic repertoire while debuting new works that reflect the company’s evolution and enduring vision. Featuring choreography set to live blues and soul music, classical accompaniment, and spoken word, this production offers an experience unlike anything the company has presented in recent years.

A standout moment in the program

is Vision, a sweeping, generational work choreographed by co-founder Waverly T. Lucas II and set to Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9. Last performed in its entirety in the early 1990s, Vision returns as both a historical anchor and a resonant reflection on continuity, legacy, and forward movement. Audiences are invited to immerse themselves in rhythm, culture, and artistic excellence on March 28 at 8 p.m. and March 29 at 3 p.m.

Beyond the stage, Ballethnic remains deeply invested in education and youth development. This summer, the organization will offer two enriching programs designed to inspire and challenge young artists. Beginning June 1, 2026, the fourweek Cultural Arts Camp focuses on artistic expression and cultivation, featuring dance, visual arts, music composition, African drumming, and theater production, including choreography, costume, and prop design.

The Ballethnic Summer Dance Intensive, a three-week program beginning June 29, 2026, is designed to strengthen technique, flexibility, coordination, execution, and artistry through rigorous training. Both programs are open to all levels and age groups, serving youth ages 6–18.

Rooted in tradition and driven by innovation, Ballethnic continues to be a powerful force in the arts — honoring the past, engaging the present, and shaping the future through dance, culture, and community. Visit Ballethnic.org or call (404) 762-1416 for more information.

TA Season of Storytelling at the Center for Puppetry Arts

his spring, the Center for Puppetry Arts invites Atlanta audiences to experience a season filled with imagination, artistry, and unforgettable storytelling. From beloved family favorites to evocative adult performances and a striking museum exhibition, the lineup celebrates the full creative range of puppetry.

From January 27–March 15, families can groove along with Pete the Cat (4+), based on the bestselling book series by Georgianative James Dean. Packed with upbeat songs, colorful design, and Pete’s signature cool-cat charm, this lively production encourages young audiences to embrace creativity, resilience, and self-expression. It’s a joyful introduction to live theatre for kids and caregivers alike.

The family fun continues April 7–May 17 with The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales (4+). This world-premiere adaptation turns classic fairy tales upside down with irreverent humor, bold visuals, and playful storytelling. Silly, smart, and delightfully unexpected, this performance delivers laugh-out-loud entertainment for all ages.

As part of the Center’s Puppetry NOW initiative, acclaimed puppeteer and designer Tom Lee takes the stage February 13–22 with The Mirrored Pool (18+). This visually arresting performance featuring Lisa Kaplan and Matthew Duvall of the Grammy Award-

winning ensemble Eighth Blackbird blends mask work, movement, and puppetry to explore themes of reflection, identity, and transformation inspired by the legacy of astronomer Carl Sagan and the Voyager spacecraft carrying the Golden Record. Intimate and poetic; the work offers adult audiences a deeply immersive theatrical experience.

From March 17–April 4, the Center delves into literary darkness with The Tales of Edgar Allan Poe (13+). Featuring haunting adaptations of Poe’s most iconic works — including The Raven and The Tell-Tale Heart — this atmospheric production brings the author’s macabre imagination to life through evocative design and masterful puppetry.

Running February 12–May 17, Child of Wood highlights two decades of work by Tom Lee in the Dean DuBose Special Exhibition Gallery. Featuring intricately carved wooden figures and behind-thescenes insights, the exhibition reveals Lee’s poetic approach to puppetry and the artistry behind his storytelling.

From playful family adventures to thought-provoking adult performances, the Center for Puppetry Arts’ spring season promises wonder, creativity, and discovery for audiences of all ages.

DWe Shake, We Shine! A

Women’s History Month Concert of Legacy, Power, and Purpose

uring Women’s History Month, Atlanta Women’s Chorus presents We Shake, We Shine!, a bold and deeply moving concert that honors the legacy of women who fought for the right to be heard, and calls audiences to continue that work today.

Originally envisioned to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, We Shake, We Shine! arrives with renewed urgency. The program reflects both historical triumph and unfinished struggle, reminding us that progress is not inherited; it is sustained.

Musically, the concert is anchored by Joan Szymko’s powerful Lifting as We Climb, a work that embodies collective resilience and shared responsibility. The program also features a dynamic mix of contemporary

and classic anthems, including Quiet, You Don’t Own Me, and Beautiful Noise. Together, these selections create a resonant tapestry of defiance, hope, and empowerment.

Beyond the music, We Shake, We Shine! carries a clear and resonant message. The program honors generations of women who demanded dignity, equity, and recognition, while shining a light on the continued fight for justice today. This is not simply a reflection on history; it is a living call to action that challenges us to consider how we use our voices now.

As part of the evening, the Atlanta Women’s Chorus will present a Woman of Distinction Award recognizing a local woman who embodies courage, service, and the power of collective impact. The award underscores the concert’s central theme that progress is built through both individual leadership and communal effort. This is more than a performance. It is a movement in song. Audiences will leave inspired, uplifted, and reminded that when voices rise together, they can still shake systems and help the world shine.

Music from the Michaelerplatz: A Viennese Masterworks Concert

The New South Festival Singers & Chamber Orchestra, under the baton of first-year Music Director & Conductor Thomas Dixon, presents its annual Andrew Cain Memorial Masterworks Concert in the magnificent nave of the Holy Trinity Parish, 515 East Ponce de Leon Avenue in Decatur. Soloists will include Alexandra Watson, Daniel Shafer, and John Arnold. Our diverse program will shed light on the brilliance of three interconnected masters of the Baroque and Classical eras. Join The New South Festival Singers for Music From the Michaelerplatz, a program inspired by Vienna’s rich musical heritage. Featuring choral-orchestral works by Nicola Porpora, Franz Joseph Haydn, and Marianna Martines, the concert explores music that embodies the Classical ideals of musical clarity, expressive text setting, and gracefilled melodies. Together, these composers’ works offer a window into a vibrant artistic circle that shaped an era and continues to inspire audiences today. Haydn, 1732-1809, composed the Missa Sancti Nicolai for the Feast of St. Nicholas in 1772. Though Haydn became famous for brilliant masses and

oratorios later in his life, this was one of the few choral works he created before the age of 50. The work is classic Haydn, filled with vitality, beautiful lyric lines, and infectious joy. Marianna Martines, 1744-1812, is one of the most compelling women composers of the Baroque era. Her family lived on the third floor of a large apartment in Vienna’s Michaelerplatz. The Italian singing teacher Nicola Porpora lived on a middle floor of the building. On the top floor was a struggling young composer, Franz Joseph Haydn, who was working to establish a career as a musician. Nicola Porpora, 1686-1768, was best known as a teacher of singing, but was quite a prolific composer, having created some 60 operas in the elegant Neopolitan style. He also composed instrumental works and religious music in the form of masses and oratorios. His music has a captivating elegance. Martines took keyboard lessons from Haydn and voice lessons from Porpora. Thus, our program is a celebration of three great colleagues and friends. Join us for an afternoon of exquisite beauty and elegance. Visit www.FestivalSingers.org/concert for information.

Oglethorpe University: Where Atlanta’s Next Great Performers Take the Stage

Tucked into the heart of Brookhaven, Oglethorpe University continues to be one of Atlanta’s most vibrant destinations for the performing arts. Each season, the university’s stages come alive with plays, musicals, concerts, and exhibitions presented at an intimate scale that invites audiences to experience artistry up close.

Featuring both student performers and some of the city’s leading arts organizations, Oglethorpe’s halls are a cornerstone of Atlanta’s creative rhythm.

The season began with Girl from the North Country, now running through March 8 at Actor’s Express in Midtown. While not a dance musical in the traditional sense, the production — Oglethorpe’s fifth coproduction with Actor’s Express — moves like a piece of modern choreography. Set to Bob Dylan’s poetic catalog, the show weaves music and motion into a dreamlike tapestry. The physicality of the staging, from ensemble transitions to emotionally charged duets, feels akin to contemporary dance: expressive, fluid, and deeply human. With Oglethorpe students performing alongside veteran professionals, it’s a moving

production that brings Dylan’s songs to life.

Next, on February 20, Oglethorpe Theatre presents The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, a comedic gem whose characters practically dance across the stage with their quirks, anxieties, and triumphs. The musical’s improvisational energy creates a playful choreography all its own — rhythmic, unpredictable, and joyfully kinetic. It’s a show where every raised hand, victorious twirl, and nervous shuffle become part of the storytelling.

Rounding out the lineup is the beloved farce Noises Off, a three-act whirlwind that may be one of theatre’s greatest feats of physical comedy. Its backstage chaos and meticulously timed pratfalls create a kind of slapstick ballet, where every door slam and near miss demand precision worthy of a dance ensemble.

This spring’s productions offer movement, music, and momentum in every direction. Stay tuned — Oglethorpe University has even more creative energy leaping onto its stages later this year, ready to keep Atlanta’s arts community on its toes. More at oglethorpe.edu/arts.

IMojah in Motion: The Enduring Legacy of Terrie Ajile Axam Across Generations

n the early 1990s, while walking through Greenbriar Mall in Southwest Atlanta, Carla Newsome McManus was drawn to a dance performance unfolding on a stage in the center of the bustling space. The dancers moved with elegance, strength, and emotional depth that immediately distinguished them. Carla’s trained eye recognized classical ballet technique blended with influences of Horton and Katherine Dunham. More than impressive movement, she saw intention, discipline, and soul. In that moment, she knew she had found a place where dance was both art and education. Those dancers were students of Terrie Ajile Axam, dancer, choreographer, artistic director, founder of Total Dance/Dancical Productions, and creator of the Afrocontemporary dance form Mojah. Inspired by what she witnessed, Carla enrolled her eldest daughter, Antonia, in Total Dance at the age of five. Soon, blue leotards, ballet slippers, nude tights, and tap shoes became staples of family life. Twelve years later, Carla returned to the same studio to enroll her younger daughter, Winfrey, continuing a commitment rooted in excellence and trust.

Under Terrie Ajile Axam’s mentorship, both Antonia and Winfrey developed far beyond technical proficiency. Her teaching emphasized discipline, cultural awareness, confidence, and leadership, shaping students who carried those lessons into every aspect of their lives. Total Dance became not just a training ground, but a foundation for personal and professional growth. Today, Terrie’s influence is evident across generations. Antonia McManus Odom, a graduate of the University of Alabama, is an accomplished actress and senior treasury analyst. Winfrey McManus, a former USAG gymnast and dancer, is a senior at Tennessee State University, studying Mass Communications and Film, and currently serves as an intern with Total Dance/Dancical Productions. The legacy continues with Noelle Odom, Antonia’s daughter, Carla’s granddaughter, and Winfrey’s niece, who is now taking classes with Total Dance/Dancical Productions — a living testament to the enduring vision and impact of Terrie Ajile Axam. As wildfires rage closer and closer to a small Ohio college town, the mopey grown children and second wife of a sortof-mediocre professor are threatened by another kind of crisis: a visit from a family friend that threatens to bring all of their tensions to a towering inferno. Now, each of them will be forced to choose: stay and smolder, or leave and burn? Inspired by the classic family drama Uncle Vanya, FIRES, OHIO updates a beloved story for our painfully absurd present, taking a hilarious and heartfelt look at the natural (and personal) disasters that transform our everyday lives.

“What I love about adaptation is that you get to be in conversation with an artist

that you love and admire. And you get to argue with them. You get to use them as a jumping-off point. You get to experiment with things that perhaps disappoint you about [an original piece],” said Playwright Beth Hyland. “It’s really important to me that people who have never heard of Uncle Vanya can enjoy FIRES, OHIO fully, and I have worked very hard to make sure that’s the case. My hope for audiences is that they get to be part of this family for one night. They get to laugh with them, and cry with them, and make discoveries with them.”

Celebrating 50 Years of the Atlanta Chamber Players

This season marks a significant milestone for the Atlanta Chamber Players as the ensemble celebrates fifty years of shaping Atlanta’s cultural life through adventurous, artistically rigorous chamber music. Founded in 1976, ACP has built a legacy defined by curiosity, collaboration, and a lasting commitment to musical excellence. Read more about ACP’s history on our website.

The Atlanta Chamber Players were founded by pianist Paula Peace and flutist Melanie Cramer, whose shared belief in chamber music as a living and flexible art form led them to create an ensemble unlike any other in the region. From the outset, ACP embraced varied instrumentation and bold programming. Their first concert at Agnes Scott College paired Mozart with George Crumb, signaling an approach that valued dialogue between the classical canon and contemporary voices.

Over the decades, ACP became a vital presence across Atlanta through residencies at major universities, touring, recordings, broadcasts, and a strong emphasis on education and community engagement. The ensemble has consistently championed new music, commissioning and premiering works by living composers and nurturing

emerging talent through initiatives such as the Rapido! Composition Contest. This commitment continues to shape ACP’s artistic identity today.

Artistic leadership has remained central to ACP’s success. Under the guidance of Artistic Director Elizabeth Pridgen, the ensemble presents thoughtfully curated programs that place masterworks alongside contemporary and underrepresented voices. Her programming reflects deep musical insight and the founding vision established by Paula Peace, ensuring that each concert offers coherence, contrast, and discovery.

Executive Director Melissa Klein reflects on the anniversary: “For fifty years, the Atlanta Chamber Players have upheld exceptional artistic standards, guided by careful, intentional programming and musicianship of the highest caliber. Just as important, ACP has built a community that feels like family. That combination of artistic excellence and genuine connection is what makes this organization so special and enduring.”

The 50th anniversary will be celebrated with a Celebration event on May 17 at 5 p.m. at The Estate on Piedmont, bringing together artists, supporters, and friends to honor ACP’s past and future. Tickets and details are available at atlantachamberplayers.com.
