Day and Overnight Camps

At Atlanta History Center’s Summer Camp, history comes to life through engaging lessons, hands-on activities, and interactive experiences in our exhibits, historic houses, and gardens. Each day begins with mindfulness activities and an exciting themed lesson, followed by creative crafts, games, and exploration. Afternoons include lunch, recess, and even more opportunities for discovery. Throughout the week, campers build knowledge and creativity, culminating in a special showcase project to share with family on the final day. With optional beforeand after-care available, it’s a summer adventure you won’t want to miss!

Choosing the right camp means finding a place where your child feels comfortable, supported, and excited to participate. Considering their interests, strengths and needs ensures a camp experience that’s fun and rewarding.
n Overnight Camp: Most offer a variety of programs for children starting at age 7. Overnight camp options include co-ed, single sex and specialty camps that focus on a particular program and have varying overnight accommodations, such as cabins, tents and tepees.
n Day Camp: Similar to overnight camps, these camps take younger children, starting at age 4, and everyone returns home at the end of the day.
n Specialty Camps and Programs: Campers can embark on adventures as varied as learning how to ride a horse, water ski or dance. If your child has a special interest, there likely is a camp that specializes in it.
n Campers with Special Needs: A physical, medical or mental disability is not a roadblock to a camp experience. Each year more than 1 million children with special needs benefit from summer camp. Some camps specialize in serving certain groups while other camps integrate campers with special needs into the total camp population.
n Session Lengths Vary: Children may stay at camp for a few days, a few weeks or the entire summer. At camp, there’s a session length for every child, budget and schedule.
n Cost: Camp pricing varies and depends upon the type of camp, the facilities, the programming and the camper’s needs. Some camps and organizations offer financial assistance based on need.
For both day and overnight camps, be sure to:
n Sign up early. Many camps plan to be at full enrollment this summer. Ask about cancelation and refund policies.
n Learn health and safety policies. Check the camp’s website for the most up-to-date guidelines.
n Research online. Most camps have extensive information and photos to give you a picture of what camp life is like.
n Ask your family, friends and neighbors. Many of them were campers themselves or can tell you about their child’s experience at camp.
n Get the names of former campers. Camps you’re interested in should be able to help you contact former campers who can tell you what your child can expect.

From research to registration, use this timeline to be ready for camp.
n Now: If you haven’t done so already, it’s time to finalize your top picks for an overnight camp. Call each camp on the list and talk with the director and other references to see if the camp is a match for your child.
n Four Months Ahead: Now that you’ve selected a camp, be sure to send in all registration forms and fees on time. You should also receive an information packet with details on what your child can expect from the camp experience. Your child may have to complete a physical. If so, schedule it early and mark it off your to do list.
n Two-Three Months Ahead: Camp time will be here before you know it! Spend these months preparing your child for camp. If you can, visit the camp during an open house so your child can meet the director and tour the facilities. Now is the time to start making travel arrangements and stocking up on supplies. Your camp should provide a list of clothes and toiletries your child will need during his session.
n Just Weeks Away: Summer is here! As your child starts his session, prepare yourself for his departure and start writing a few letters.

Specialty art camps offer a variety of art forms to choose from, such as musical theater, pottery, woodworking, painting and photography. Others focus solely on one type of art, such as sewing camp or band camp. Musical theater camps are quite popular and typically showcase a production after a few weeks of rehearsals. Art camps come in all lengths and locations. You can sign your child up for a one-week-long art camp at your local recreational center or find multi-week overnight art camps where they can truly hone their craft.
Sports camps usually consist of only one sport that a child plays throughout the day. The main goal is for participants to improve their skills by focusing extensively on a sport they love. Depending on where you live, you can find all types of sports camps like tennis, golf, soccer, baseball, lacrosse or gymnastics. It is also a way for your child to try a new sport or something only offered during the summer, such as surfing and sailing.

If your child loves to code, build and tinker, then a tech camp may be the right fit. These types of camps make learning about science and technology fun and exciting for kids. They also provide an opportunity for kids to dive deeper into a subject they love, such as working on a science experiment, designing a website or programming a robot. You can find science and tech camps through local schools, colleges and museums.

Traditional camps are what you think of when you envision summer camp — canoeing, hiking, archery, relay races, swim lessons and crafts. If your child enjoys exploring and experiencing new things and has not yet found one specific activity that they are passionate about, then a traditional camp is a wonderful choice. They are very common and can be found all over. Some are day camps, while others are overnight experiences where your kids can also learn more independence skills.
