Maximize your child’s academic growth at

F

rom crawling, walking and babbling to the rebellion of the tween and teen years, children go through a predictable set of developmental stages – physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially.

You can start out with a precocious learner who is seemingly ahead of everyone else, only to find out two years later that his classmates have caught up and are speeding ahead. Not to worry. It’s all just part of growing up. Still, “knowing where your child is at developmentally can help you understand and support him,” says Vivian Seltzer, professor of human development and behavior at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

Most kids don’t need much help navigating the landscape.

But it helps to be aware of where they’re at so you can guide them along the way and step in if you need to. Use our guide to help your child make the most of every age and stage, from kindergarten through high school.

Elementary School n What’s happening now: From kindergarten through fifth grade, kids make major strides, from learning how to transition into school to being comfortable with a classroom routine. First, they will learn to read (kindergarten and first grade), and then read to learn (third grade and beyond).

Emotionally, they begin to develop academic self-esteem based on feedback from you and their teachers.

By the fourth and fifth grade, they’re moving from concrete to abstract thinking.

“When concrete thinkers see the Statue of Liberty, they see it as a lady with a torch. An abstract thinker also sees it as a symbol of freedom and democracy,” says Rebecca Branstetter, an educational and clinical psychologist.

In fifth grade, kids are also beginning to set goals, work independently, function better in groups, make more complex decisions, and become organized with their school and homework. n Plan for success: Reinforce what your child learns in school with activities at home. For example, let your second-grader count change at the checkout and measure the ingredients

while you’re baking cookies. Have her tell time. Talk about numbers while you’re driving, such as how fast you’re going, the distance you’ll travel, and how long it will take to get there. Play board games involving money, time, logic or vocabulary such as the family editions of Monopoly, Scrabble or Apples to Apples. On the weekends, take family outings to museums and zoos to visit exhibits that coincide with school subjects.

“If your child is learning about Egypt, take a trip to a local museum with an Egyptian exhibit,” Branstetter says. “It reinforces curiosity, sends the subtle message that school is important, and shows your child that school and home are connected.”

Develop a homework habit. Make doing homework automatic by coming up with a routine that fits your child’s personality.

Some kids like doing homework right after school. Others need to burn off steam before getting down to business. Whatever you choose, stick to the schedule you establish for your kids as much as possible.

To minimize distractions, keep the TV off during homework time.

For younger kids, begin each homework session by asking your child to

explain what she’s supposed to do, then gauge if she can do it alone or needs your help. If you’re not around when your child does his homework, let him know you’ll look at it when you get home, and be sure to follow through.

Praise your child for completing homework by emphasizing the process, such as, “You worked really hard to learn your math facts,” rather than just saying “Good job” for finishing the assignment.

Praising the process teaches persistence, which is a skill kids need for school success.

Middle School n What’s happening now: In middle school – the sixth through eighth grades – kids start puberty, and the physical changes can make them feel they’re not in control of their bodies.

“It’s a complicated time physically, socially and emotionally,” says Vicki Panaccione, a licensed psychologist and founder of the Better Parenting Institute (betterparentinginstitute.com). During this difficult age and stage, sense of self is also developing. “There’s a lot of exclusion in middle school,” Panaccione says, with kids often forming cliques. www.atlantaparent.com

each developmental stage n Plan for success: Expect turmoil. The mood swings and overreactions, such as total hysteria over what others kids say and do, are a normal part of this phase.

Be supportive, but don’t minimize the problem or try to fix it either. “Middleschoolers don’t want you to solve anything,” Panaccione says. Instead, use phrases like: “I’m sorry you feel that way,” or “That must have been embarrassing for you,” rather than “Ignore it” or “Get over it.” It is a big deal to your child. Placating won’t help and can be harmful. “They can push your child away because she’ll feel like you just don’t get it,” Panaccione says.

Don’t be too concerned if your child starts to hang with the wrong crowd. “As kids develop and decide who they want to be, they need to decide who they don’t want to be,” Seltzer says. They may try various groups, including one that’s not your favorite, to see what feels right. All kids have friends their parents don’t like.

But kids are good self-barometers. “Don’t butt in unless you think their friends are dangerous,” Seltzer cautions.

In middle school, the workload gets more difficult because kids have to meet the demands of up to seven different teachers instead of just one.

“The best thing you can do is allow your child to vent,” Panaccione says.

If your child complains that one of his teachers gives too much homework, you might say, “What do you think you might need to do?” rather than, “He’s trying to teach you.” The idea is to help your child solve the problem and find his own way.

Keep the lines of communication open so your child continues to feel comfortable talking to you about other problems that might come along.

High School n What’s happening now: In high school, children forge their identity academically, socially, morally, sexually and spiritually while trying to figure out who they are apart from you.

“High schoolers question everything and may even rebel against your opinions and beliefs,” Panaccione says. If you’re a Democrat, for example, your child might say he’s a Republican. If you’re a meatand-potatoes family, she may become a vegan. n Plan for success: Keep talking.

Allow your child to ask questions about your opinions and values and to express himself. Respond by asking questions such as, “Why do you think so?” rather than lecturing or yelling.

Note dramatic changes. It’s normal for high schoolers to be just as moody as middle schoolers. But if your teen shows a drastic change in personality, behavior, a significant drop in grades, study habits or attitude, or a dramatic shift in appearance, dress or grooming, or interests, goals or activities, know that something’s up.

“Talk to your teen about your concerns,” Panaccione says. Start by saying something like: “I’m concerned that you’re spending time in bed when you used to be out with your friends.” Then listen to what your child has to say.

If the behaviors are a sign of rebelling against a lack of freedom or privilege, be open to discussing and compromising.

If you’re concerned your child may be suffering from depression or another mental health disorder, seek professional help.

“Your child’s primary care provider or the school guidance counselor is a good resource for a referral to qualified child/teen psychologists in your area,” Panaccione says.

Help your child deal with college pressure. By the 11th grade, college pressure comes on strong. But start talking college now only if your child is ready.

“Some kids are focused. But most have no idea what they want to do or major in,” Panaccione says.

To reduce anxiety, Panaccione tells high school students that they don’t have to know what they want to do going into college. That’s where they’ll figure it out, which is something you can say at home, too.

Make sure to listen to your child’s wishes for college rather than pushing your agenda. “To be successful, kids should end up going to a college that’s right for them,” Panaccione says.

Georgia Schools Checklist: Make Sure Your Child Can Enroll in Classes Georgia law requires students to attend a public or private school or be home-schooled from ages 6 to 16. Public kindergarten is available, but not mandatory.

Children enrolled in child care facilities or entering a Georgia school for the first time, including kindergarten, are required to have an eye, ear and dental exam and certain vaccines to protect against diseases.

Examinations and vaccinations are offered through a private doctor’s office or public health clinics and are documented on the Georgia Certificate of Eye, Ear, Dental Exam (form 3300) and the Georgia Certificate of Immunization (form 3231). These completed forms must be provided by parents to the school or childcare facility for enrollment. If form 3300 hasn’t been completed, parents have 120 days to submit it. Superintendents can grant a waiver for submitting form 3231, for up to 90 days, if immunizations can be completed during that period.

As kids enter sixth grade, there are a few final shots they’ll need: Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis (Tdap or Dtap) – final dose required; varicella booster – second dose required; Mumps – second dose required; meningococcal (MCV) – first of two doses recommended; many universities now require for freshman on-campus students; Human Papillomavirus – three-dose series, not required but recommended.

Students enrolling in Georgia public schools for the first time will be asked to provide a Social Security number, but it is not required and parents can decline to provide it.

A child must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1 to enter public kindergarten and 6 years old on or before Sept. 1 to enter first grade.

The beginning of preschool is a major milestone for children and their parents.

Preschool presents new challenges, even for children who have been in day care.

Many preschools have expectations more commonly associated with kindergarten or first grade. Some preschools even have entrance exams that require a child to demonstrate specific skills.

Preschool readiness results from a combination of natural childhood growth processes and learned skills. Children have different timetables for such natural milestones as crawling and walking, and parents can do little to affect when these skills will emerge. In contrast, there are numerous abilities that depend on learning, and parents can do much to provide an environment in which such learning will occur.

You can prepare your child for preschool success by incorporating some simple activities into your child’s daily routine. Here are some specific ideas:

Infants To 5 Years

n Talk With Your Child, Not At Him. Preschool is a verbal place where children are required to express themselves in words.

Give your child a lot of practice by encouraging conversations among family members at home. When your child is telling you something, focus your attention on her and on what she is saying. Ask questions so she will tell you more. n Find Playmates. Give your child the opportunity to play with children his own age. At first each child may engage in his own activity, although other children are present.

Psychologists call this “parallel play,” a developmental skill that must be mastered prior to “interactive play,” in which children actively engage each other. Gradually introduce the concept of sharing, but understand that children develop this skill at different rates.

n Emphasize Physical Play. A child’s muscle control develops in sequence from larger, looser movements to smaller, more detailed ones. For this reason, hours spent running, jumping, throwing a ball, and climbing will make a child more able to master holding a crayon or pair of scissors later on.

Public parks are excellent places for play that will enhance your child’s physical abilities. n Provide Sensory Play Experiences. Playing with sand and water allows children to learn about the properties of each, while developing perceptual pathways in the brain. Many preschools emphasize sensory activities in their reading readiness programs. n Introduce Materials And Tools.

Provide your child with paper, fat crayons, washable markers, child-sized safety scissors, removable tape, and stick glue. Let them create pictures, cut outs, and greeting cards.

Teach them to hold and use these tools safely. n Read To Your Child. Read to your child, pausing occasionally to discuss pictures or action in the book. Your child will love having you close and she will learn how to properly handle and enjoy a book. Some children learn to read the alphabet, or even words, just by following along with a parent’s reading. n Teach Hygiene For Good Health.

Preschools are incubation rooms for germs, so make sure your child knows how to wash his hands before eating and after using the bathroom. Teach him to sneeze and cough into a tissue. Most preschools will expect children to observe these simple rules of hygiene. n Provide Structured Activities.

Play simple games with your children and emphasize that following rules makes the game go smoothly. If your child doesn’t have routines for getting up in the morning and going to bed, establish regular sequences of tasks for those times. Make a chart with boxes that your child can check as tasks are completed. n Visit Preschools With Your Child. Let your child get used to the idea of preschool with visits designed to tantalize.

Point out the attractive toys and activities.

Remember that some fear and a period of adjustment are normal. n Explore Your Own Feelings.

Preschool can be more traumatic for the parent than for the child. Sometimes it’s painful to realize that our “babies” aren’t babies anymore. Accept that it may be an emotional time. Try to separate your own emotions from any adjustment difficulties your child may experience. www.atlantaparent.com

Ready, Set, School!

Get Your Child Prepared for Kindergarten

When my son boarded the bus for pre-kindergarten last fall, I waved with excitement and more than a little anxiety.

I hoped he would be able to sit still and I feared that he’d clam up when the teacher asks a question. Despite nightly story time and shelves full of preschool prep workbooks, I wasn’t sure his skills would meet the teacher’s expectations. I hoped other kids make their letters backwards and upside down sometimes, too. I didn’t want my son to be left out socially if he couldn’t keep up academically.

A recent online survey of 518 kindergarten teachers conducted by Age of Learning Inc., based in Glendale, Calif., suggests parents have plenty of reasons to worry about pre-kindergarten preparation.

Sixty-six percent of the teachers who responded believe kids are underprepared for school. The national sample included new and experienced instructors from public and private programs.

Survey results show some kids cannot recite the whole alphabet – the simplest early literacy task. Only 28 percent of teachers said most children know the names of the letters, and even fewer (15 percent) said students know what sounds letters represent. Teachers’ ratings of number skills were more favorable. More than half of the teachers (57 percent) reported most kids can recite the numbers from 1 to 10, and 49 percent indicated most kids can count a collection of fewer than 10 objects.

Pre-kindergarten classes help a young child prepare for kindergarten, according to 95 percent of the teachers surveyed. But parents also play a vital role in kindergarten readiness, says Dave Hendry, coordinator for Age of Learning’s comprehensive online curriculum called ABCmouse.com Early Learning Academy. “Parents can create learning opportunities at the grocery store and in the car,” Hendry says. You want to demonstrate learning is a natural part of everyday life. n Reading: Experts say the best way to support early literacy is to read with your child. Use books as the basis for a conversation about letters, words and stories, Hendry says. Look at the pictures and ask questions about what your child

sees. Note the names of the author and illustrator, point out specific letters, and run your finger beneath the words periodically to demonstrate we read from left to right and top to bottom.

These are key reading concepts. n Writing: Offer a variety of crayons and markers, and big, blank paper for your child to explore.

Scribbling strengthens hand muscles and hones hand-eye coordination.

“Chalkboards are great surfaces for little kids,” says pediatric occupational therapist Anne Zachary, Ph.D. Small pieces of chalk encourage kids to grip with their fingers instead of their fists, and – because your child can erase – you won’t go through reams of paper.

Prompt your child to make lines, curves, crosses, and circles. Shapes are letterwriting prerequisites.

n Speaking: Children should be able to speak clearly and express their ideas with words.

“Encourage independence by having your child place her own order at a restaurant,” suggests educational psychologist Kim Har, Ph.D. “Speaking directly to the server and paying for purchases in a store are opportunities to interact with adults besides parents.” When you speak with your child, be a good role model. Make eye contact, listen, and take turns. n Math and Science: Reciting the numbers from 1 to 10 is only the beginning of pre-kindergarten prep. “Ask your child to count out five bananas or to get six cans of soup at the store,” Hendry says. Count the number of people in line ahead of you. Point out price stickers and ask, “Do you see a number that starts with 5?” to help your child learn to identify written numerals.

At home, let your child sort items by color, shape or size. Use words like more-less, bigger-smaller, and light-heavy to describe objects. Science is based on measurement and comparisons. n Small Motor Skills: “There’s a big wave of children who can’t manipulate a pencil or cut with scissors entering kindergarten these days,” Zachary says. Playing with small toys, such as Legos and beads and Play-Doh improves strength and coordination. Give your child a small pair of tongs to pick up pom poms or pasta noodles, Zachary says. Tongs require the same pinching maneuver kids must make when manipulating a pencil or cutting with scissors.

Those that are too easy will be boring. “You want software that has a developmental progression, so it’s focused on what your child needs to learn next,” says Hendry. New knowledge makes the most sense when it’s built on a foundation provided by previous learning.

When you’re shopping for educational technology, “Look for tools that allow your child to interactively control learning at their own pace,” says Hendry. “If the pace is too fast, kids don’t have the opportunity to make the connections learning requires.” Four-yearolds are not just short 8-year-olds. They need different support for learning. Young kids may choose to repeat a lesson several times before moving on to the next level.

Of course, even the best educational technology shouldn’t take the place of reading books, playing with peers and making mud pies. Early childhood experts recommend tech sessions of only 30-60 minutes for preschoolers.

Does Your School Make the A+ Grade?

If there’s a perfect school for your child, you’ll find it in metro Atlanta. The metro area’s high concentration of private schools means you’ll have plenty of choices, but also that you’ll have to do some homework to find the best fit for your child.

School size is important.

Some children might get lost in a school with 2,000 students, while others would thrive. In metro Atlanta, you’ll find a range – schools with fewer than 100 students to schools with 1,000 to 3,000 students.

Plan to look at lots of websites and attend lots of open houses. You’ll need to make campus visits, especially if your child has special needs.

Many schools require applicants to take standardized tests such as the SSAT (Secondary Schools Admissions Test) or the JATP (Joint Admissions Testing Program).

And you’ll need to find a school that fits your budget, or offers scholarships to help with the tuition costs. Some of Atlanta’s more expensive schools are $20,000 per year.

Schools belonging to the Atlanta Area Association of Independent Schools and the Georgia High School Association award financial aid based on need, but that aid may not cover the full tuition. The schools work with the Student Scholarship Organizations to identify recipients (find more information about SSOs at doe.k12.ga.us).

You’ll need to analyze the school’s curriculum and ask lots of questions. Here are some to get you started:

The Open House Experience

Open houses are the time for parents to learn critical information about their child’s potential school, and a time to open the door to communication with that school. Attend your next open house equipped with what to expect and your questions so you will get the most out of the experience.

The Basics Expect to hear words of welcome from administrators and probably a plug from the PTA. Schools usually include a brief history of the school, an overview of its educational philosophy and the official mission statement.

In other words, you’ll hear some pretty general information that you may have found on the school’s website.

In most cases, a sampling of the school’s extracurricular activities will be given to parents. This overview period provides a good time for parents to ask about the bus schedule, school lunches, physical education requirements and other general information, such as dress code.

Most schools offer a guided tour which should include the media center, gymnasium, computer labs and classrooms. If your child is already enrolled in the school, you may meet with your child’s future teacher.

Remember, open houses are for everyone, so it’s not a time to discuss specific concerns about your individual child. An exception to this rule may be special needs schools where sessions are smaller and personnel may be on hand to help you assess whether the school is the best fit for your child.

Questions, Questions, Questions Look past the terms that schools use to describe themselves. If you’re looking for a Christian school, what’s behind that word? Are Bible values intertwined with lessons?

Ask for evidence to support the school’s claims. Look at SAT scores, attendance records and grade-point averages.

Schools will make claims about particular programs that may not be accurate. For example, if a school claims to offer an International Baccalaureate (IB) program, verify that they are IB-authorized by the external organization. Just because a school says that it offers programs such as IB doesn’t mean that every student is eligible.

Follow up after the open house with phone calls and emails if you have questions.

Ask Questions!

Asking questions is the best way to learn the “ins and outs” of any school. Here are some questions to get you started: n How much ongoing training do the teachers receive? n How can parents be involved in the classroom? n If students are put on ability tracks, how are they decided? Are the tracks flexible? n What is the main emphasis of the curriculum? n Does the school offer free tutoring? n What are the school’s goals for the students? n How can we support at home what you’re doing in the classroom?

Decoding Fancy Terms How do you discover what your prospective school really means when there’s a lot of fancy jargon? The Center for the Advancement and Study of International Education (CASIE) gives insight into the terms schools toss around. session. This will give you a good idea of the teaching style and classroom setting. Are the desks arranged in groups or in rows facing the teacher? This is typically an indication of the amount of student interaction that is encouraged in that classroom.

Take a tour yourself. Look for physical indicators of the school’s sense of pride. Do teachers set a good example by picking up trash from the floor? Examine the condition of the restrooms. The interiors may indicate whether the school makes the appearance of its facilities a priority.

Talk to other parents about the school.

Most parents are happy to share their thoughts.

Think About the Long Run Not many parents like to uproot their children from school once enrolled, so look at the big picture. Although your child may be entering Pre-K, you may be hoping to stay with the system through high school, so research graduation and college placement rates, as well as the percentage of scholarship recipients.

This information is usually found on the school’s website, but the admissions department will also be able to answer these questions.

n Academic Rigor: This is a subjective term. Be prepared to look at the curriculum yourself and assess the difficulty by your own standards. n One-to-One Laptop: This means that every child will have a laptop, either funded by the school or you. Inquire about laptop procedures.

Will kids turn off their screens during instruction or possibly become lost in the cyber world during lectures? n Global Citizens: A subjective term depending on your definition of a global citizen; this approach is often shown by using few to no textbooks and emphasizing current and multicultural events. n Target Language Instruction: This is a language immersion program. Ask to observe a classroom. You should hear 90 percent of the target language used. n Whole Child: This term emphasizes a well-rounded education. Look on the school stationery for what the school deems important. “Whole child” schools often list a director of fine arts in addition to the principal, athletic director and counselor.

n the mountains of North Georgia on the campus of Rabun GapNacoochee School, students are flying high above the stage in the school’s annual Cirque program.

Rabun Gap’s Cirque program began after a group of student thespians participated in a workshop on miming, clowning, and acrobatics.

Now in its 12th year, the Rabun Gap Cirque is highly acclaimed in the region and beyond for its artistic storytelling through drama and acrobatics. Many of the sequences are choreographed by veteran student performers who are identified as leaders for each apparatus and skit. The program brings artists, thespians, dancers, and athletes together in a single performance that delivers beyond expectations!

Understanding the Individualized Education Program (IEP) If you have a child with special needs, there’s no doubt you’ve heard the term IEP. The purpose of the IEP is to develop goals and objectives for a child who receives special education. The IEP details the services and aid that school systems provide to each special needs student.

An IEP is developed in a meeting by a team that often includes the child and his teachers, parents, therapists and school faculty. Here are some tips from the Georgia Advocacy Office on how to make your IEP meeting productive and successful.

Before the Meeting n An IEP meeting can be intimidating to the parent, so plan to stay calm. Remember that everyone wants what is best for the child. n You are a member of the team that makes the crucial decisions about your child’s education. Approach the IEP as a team player. n Bring someone with you. Another parent, friend or neighbor can take notes and support you. You may want to use an audio recorder during the meeting. Be sure to inform the school of your plans.

Students are grouped by skill levels in classes of 12 or less.

At Bedford, students receive the proper academic remediation,as well as specific remedial help with physical skills, peer interaction and self-esteem. Students must be diagnosed professionally as having specific learning disabilities.

The Bedford School is based on the idea that every human being should have the opportunity to become the very best person possible. For the child with the learning disability, this is difficult without proper intervention. The goal of the school is to help each child maximize his potential through a combination of teamwork, structured materials, organized activities and a dedicated staff. Extracurricular activities include basketball, soccer, volleyball and track and field.

he focus of the WEALTHY HABITS WORKSHOP (WHW) is to educate middle and high school students on the importance of good financial decisionmaking. The WHW focuses on teaching 11-18 year olds about making, managing and multiplying money using a fun, proven approach that has reshaped numerous young people’s attitudes about money.

How many of us look back and ask ourselves tough questions? “What if I had known then what I know now about money? What if I had started saving 10% of my income with my first job and been taught how to use that money to make money?”

The Department of the Treasury shows that teens that have taken a personal finance course have higher savings rates, higher net worth, and make larger contributions to 401(k)’s. All it takes is 10 hours of instruction to influence the financial decisions that today’s child will make as tomorrow’s adult.

Choosing the Right Activity for Your Child The metro area offers a variety of enriching opportunities for every child, but how do you know which program is the right fit? Here are some questions and tips to help you begin your search. n Know your child’s interests: First determine your child’s interests. Younger children should be exposed to a variety of activities to develop interests, while older kids can be given options such as sports, dance, music or art. Be careful not to push your own hobbies on your child. Parents can unintentionally steer children to their preferred activity and hamper the ability to discover unique talents and interests. n Start the search: Once you have narrowed down your child’s interests, investigate the options. Look into instructors’ qualifications and history of working with children, and note whether they are licensed or certified. Also look at how long the school has been in operation, how many kids are enrolled in each class, and what the student-to-teacher ratio is. Ask for references, and find out what the parent and child liked best and least about the program. n What are the costs? Make sure you understand what the finances are up front.

Determine the length and cost of each class, and what is covered by the cost. Questions to ask before enrolling include whether the teacher employs a cancellation or withdrawal fee, or if members must sign a long term agreement.

Consider extra expenses such as costumes and gear – are they provided or available to rent? n Attend a class: One of the best ways to determine whether a program is a good fit for your child is to visit with the instructor and watch a class. Things to notice while visiting include whether the teacher gives adequate individual attention to each student. Also note whether she communicates clearly with the students, and offers both positive and constructive remarks.

Make sure you know what level of involvement is required for parents, as some activities need parents to organize events and assist the coach or instructor. n Student evaluation: Find out how students are evaluated, and ask whether the teacher will give a free lesson or evaluation before classes start to make sure your child is properly placed. If students must audition or be certified before enrolling, ensure that movement between levels is possible if your child is placed at the wrong level initially.

Most importantly, be thorough. Don’t settle for a teacher or program just because they are geographically closest to you. Keep in mind that classes are more than just fun for your child – they stimulate creativity, build self esteem and provide educational benefits for children.
