Must-Read Stories Fun Things to Do This Week Get Wet Guide
hen I was a kid, summer seemed to last forever. I spent my days bike riding, playing with friends, reading and going on family vacations. Now, summers seem to be getting shorter than ever, with many schools starting classes in early August. It’s not too soon to start preparing your kids for the back-to-school routine – our story on page 46 has some great tips for getting organized, along with ideas for end-of-summer fun. We’ve been making the most of summer at our house, spending lots of time outside, whether it’s walking, bike riding, playing tennis or visiting the neighborhood pool. We’re enjoying family time with movie nights, fun projects and trying new recipes. Our “Top 10” issue can help you make the most of summer – and the rest of the year, too. It’s packed with some of the best places to play in Atlanta, from nature centers and museums to water parks and pools. You’ll also find resources for other important aspects of daily life – use our guide to find pediatricians and specialists, schools, classes, dentists, and more. If you’re staying in Atlanta and being a hometown tourist, there are many special events to check out. We’re planning a visit to Illuminarium’s new SPACE experience, the Zoo’s Wild World Weekend and (of course) the Atlanta Ice Cream Festival. Read our Family Fun Guide for info on the latest happenings, exhibits, blueberry farms and more. There are plenty of ways to have free fun, too. A big part of our summer is spent reading. My kids are both participating in our library’s summer reading challenge; we’re loving the free events and programming that go along with it. In addition to reading some great books, they’ve seen a magic show and made crafts; Corinne even made her own fun “mermaid tail” blanket. Check your local library’s website for special events and activities. No matter how you’re spending the summer, we want to hear about it! Drop us a line and tell us about some of your favorite ways to play. The days of summer are short but sweet.

Has Summer Boredom Set In? by Sarah Lyons
Now that the kids have been out of school for a month or so, you may notice signs of summer boredom starting to settle in. The thrill of a trip to the pool is wearing off, and they’re drawn more to electronics and less to fun outings. Getting them to pitch in around the house is a chore in itself. With the start of school still a few weeks away, here are some ideas for battling the boredom.
n Change the scenery
n Give in to electronics
n Put a crab in water
When the kids seem antsy and bored, try a change of scenery for a quick mood adjustment. Go for a walk, play in the backyard, hop into the car and do some errands, or even play in an area of the house that you don’t commonly use for play.
It won’t hurt to give in to the desire to play on tablets and watch TV once in a while. Plan a movie marathon or let the kids have extra screen time to help kill the boredom of the end of summer days. Take a trip to the library for some new books and exchange reading minutes for extra screen time. The kids will be happy with their bonus game time, and they’ll sharpen their reading skills before school starts.
It’s a solution for any age – a bath or shower can boost anyone’s mood whether you are dealing with a fussy baby or an exhausted mom. Water play can also lighten the mood. Head to the pool, set up the sprinkler in the backyard, fill some water balloons, or visit the beach. A day playing in water can turn your kids from grumpy to happy in no time.
n Take a day trip Consider taking a day trip to break up the long summer days. Explore local attractions or visit a nearby city. A trip to the zoo, amusement park, museum or water park can give you and the kids something to look forward to. If a bigger day trip isn’t in the budget, pack a lunch and spend the day at a neighboring town’s park. Check Atlanta Parent’s Family Fun Guide for lots of seasonal activities and events. 10 Atlanta Parent
July 2022
n Pick a project Most families always have unfinished projects to work on. Clean closets, sort toys, or work in the yard. Teach your kids how to bake a cake or encourage them to plan a menu and cook dinner. You may need to assist, depending on the age of your children. Give them chores they have never tried before – they have the benefit of learning something new, and you gain the added bonus of a cleaner house.
n Host a playdate Invite some friends over for the day. Someone new to play with and talk to can lighten the mood and give siblings a much needed break from playing (and fighting) with each other. Moms can enjoy adult conversation while kids enjoy play time, and everyone is glad for a break from the typical day. atlantaparent.com

Meet the Founder “Children have a higher capacity to learn advanced concepts much sooner than we give them credit, but they must be in developmentally appropriate environments that are conducive for learning to take place. OMNI has raised the bar in teaching children how to become critical thinkers and competitive in a global economy. We understand learning begins at home, which means schools have a responsibility to partner with parents and empower them to engage with their children in meaningful ways. Schools also have a responsibility to make learning enjoyable from the onset while cultivating a sense of self and community. On day one, OMNI works jointly with families to foster a love of learning and pride in belonging ... in multiple languages.”

Travel in Time Make an annual time capsule with photos, handwriting samples and drawings to open at the beginning of every school year. Or do a back-to-school interview each year to look back at. Record height, weight, friends, favorite movies and career aspirations in a notebook you can revisit.
You Deserve a Dessert After the first day of school, plan to bake a fun treat to celebrate the start of school. What about a “You’re a smart cookie” cookie cake?
School Countdown Create a countdown calendar for the days leading up to the first week of school with different activities. Each day, do something different to spend quality time together – set up a water park in the backyard, ask about their best summer memory, make dinner together.
Set Up Rewards Make a coupon book of rewards – takeout pizza for dinner, a trip for ice cream, movie night – to be redeemed after a good grade, trying something new, being kind to a friend or sibling, or school accomplishment.

TIPS TO GET ORGANIZED
1 Be Grateful Make it a time of gratitude. While you’re back-to-school shopping, pick up extra school supplies to donate to children in need.
Back-to-School Shopping Shop for school supplies and clothes early. Before shopping, go through your kids’ wardrobes and last year’s school supplies, and toss or donate the items they’ve outgrown or no longer want. Make it a special outing by going out for lunch or ice cream after.
Be “Present” Make a small back-toschool gift your kids can open on the first day of school. Fill a pencil pouch with cute little trinkets, a letter of encouragement, fun erasers, hand sanitizer and other small and useful items.
2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Have a Photoshoot Search online for cute photo props and signs your child can pose with on the first day of school – we love the chalkboard-themed ones! Each year, take a photo of your child in the same spot with the signs, so you can look back at how they’ve grown.

Prioritize your family’s activities. Take time to evaluate the hobbies and activities your children enjoy, rather than overscheduling your kids. Work together to create an outline of your child’s school and activity schedules in a cute planner. Create a family calendar with everyone’s activities and commitments. Monitor your child’s consumption of news and social media. Consider having family meetings to discuss the news about COVID-19, safety in schools, or other current events. Refresh rules for screentime – when and how long can they use electronics? Have a “bedtime” for electronics that is well before your child’s actual bedtime. Increase the independence of younger kids by practicing tasks before school starts: refilling a water bottle from a water fountain or sink; opening a lunch box, snacks and containers; sitting, eating and cleaning up a meal at a table within 20-25 minutes; memorizing family or guardians’ name, phone number and address; and focusing on an independent task for 10-20 minutes. Have a backup transportation plan in case your kids miss the bus – make sure they know who to call if this happens. Create a quiet workspace for homework and projects. Remove distractions from the area, and keep school supplies in a nearby bin. Designate an “inbox” for sheets that need your attention, like permission slips. Know how to ask about their day – “how was school?” may not be the best conversation starter. Ask open-ended questions, or share something about your own day before asking what the best part of their day was. If they come to you with a problem, discuss solutions together rather than immediately trying to fix it. Establish a routine. Reimplement bedtime and wake your kids up on time so they can start getting ready. Brainstorm ideas – what can you do to make getting ready for your day easier? Work through packing book bags the night before or setting out tomorrow’s outfit to make the morning smoother. Give your kids more responsibility. If you’ll have already left for the day when your kids are still getting ready for school, walk through what they should eat for breakfast. Let them pack their own lunchbox and show them where you keep items in the fridge and pantry. Talk through any worries your child has about school. Acknowledging their concerns can be helpful and can set you up as a reliable outlet. Let them know that they can talk to you. For older kids, set up a box where they can drop in their concerns, so you know what they’re worried about and can set aside private time for each other.
