Choosing the Right Activity
The metro area offers a variety of enriching opportunities for every child, but how do you know which program is the right fit? Here are some questions and tips to help you begin your search.
n Know your child’s interests: First, determine your child’s interests. Younger children should be exposed to a variety of activities to develop interests, while older kids can be given options, such as sports, dance, music or art.
n Find out the costs: Make sure you understand what the costs are up front. Determine the length and cost of each class. Consider extra expenses, such as costumes and gear.
n Attend a class: One of the best ways to determine whether a program is a good fit for your child is to visit with the instructor and watch a class.
n Progress: Find out how students are evaluated. Ask whether the instructor will do an evaluation before classes start to make sure your child is properly placed.

To register for fall, visit centre.atlantaballet.com The Atlanta Ballet Centre for Dance Education has been inspiring future dancers for nearly 30 years.
What motivated us in 1996 still motivates us today — to inspire every dancer to be the best they can be. We believe that every child, no matter their age or experience, should discover the joy of dance. Whether your child loves to skip and twirl, enjoys ballet technique at the barre, or is ready to take the leap into a professional career, our qualified and experienced instructors will be with them every step of the way. In our noncompetitive, highly nurturing dance environment, everyone is respected, dreams are encouraged, and achievements at all levels are celebrated.

SCHOOL TOURS AND OPEN HOUSES
Attending a school tour or an open house are wonderful ways to see if a new school is the right fit for your child.
l Start by doing your research. Narrow down the options until you have a short list of schools that seem the best for your child by looking at websites, FAQs, pre-recorded videos and social media pages.
l Create a list of questions you plan to ask each school. What questions do you or your child have that you can’t find answers to on the website? Responses can help you narrow down or rank the school options that you’re interested in.
l Schools may have different options that you can register to attend, with each session being important for different reasons. Pay attention to the options offered, so you can decide what makes the most sense for you to attend. Signing up for a phone conference may be a better fit before registering for a campus tour, if you decide your family is still interested in the school.
l At a tour, whether it’s virtual or in-person, expect to tour the school, learn more about the community, talk to school professionals, and ask questions.
l At an open house, expect to hear words of welcome from administrators and a plug from the PTA. Schools usually include a brief school history, an educational philosophy, a mission statement and a list of extracurricular activities or clubs. This overview period is a good time for parents to ask about the bus schedule, school lunches, physical education requirements, dress code and more.
l After the school session, look at SAT scores, attendance records and grade-point averages. Follow up with phone calls and emails if you have questions.
l If it’s not part of the tour, schedule a time to observe a class in session. This will give you a good idea of the teaching style and classroom setting. Are the desks arranged in groups or in rows facing the teacher? What materials does the classroom have for the students? Are the students enthusiastic about learning?
l Talk to other parents about the school. Most parents are happy to share their thoughts.
l Some schools offer programs that allow you and your child to learn more from a student’s perspective. If not, ask administrators if they can connect your child with a student at the school.
l Look at the big picture. You may be hoping to stay with the system through high school, so research graduation and college placement rates. This information is usually found on the school’s website.

Choosing a Pediatrician
Atlanta has many great pediatricians; choosing the right one for your child can seem daunting. Here are 10 questions to ask while you’re making a decision.
1. What do you love about your job?
2. How long have you been practicing, and do you have any subspecialties?
3. How does your practice utilize technology?
4. Can appointments be made online?
5. What is the scheduling process? What is the average wait time for an appointment?
6. Which medical networks and hospitals do you work with? Does your practice accept a variety of insurance plans in case our coverage changes?
7. Does the practice offer same-day sick visits?
8. What are your thoughts on vaccines and the use of antibiotics for children?
9. If other doctors are in the practice, will we also see them on occasion? Do nurse practitioners also see patients?
10. As a pediatrician, what is your top advice to parents?
