Our Mission
The Atlanta Opera’s mission is to break the boundaries of Opera to create exceptional experiences for audiences everywhere. Our Vision Reimagining opera.
WILSON Chair of the Board
Back in 2012, while The Atlanta Opera was conducting the search that led to Tomer’s transformational appointment as General & Artistic Director, a group of Board officers and senior staff met to create a strategic plan.
“There are those that look at things the way they are, and ask why? I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?”
— George Bernard Shaw
When asked what our goal should be, my response was that The Atlanta Opera should become one of the Top 10 opera companies in the U.S. And why not? Atlanta was and is a Top 10 metro area (currently the 6th largest) in the U.S. This season, we were thrilled to announce that The Atlanta Opera has made this dream come true, rising from outside the Top 30 all the way to becoming one of the Top 10 U.S. opera companies.
The Atlanta Opera’s position as a Top 10 company was confirmed this season when over two dozen members of the Wagner Society of New York, and other Wagner fans from around the world, came to see our production of Die Walküre . New Yorkers coming to Atlanta to see opera? Why not? It was a spectacular production with some of the finest singers in the world.
This was also a preview of what we can expect for our upcoming productions of Siegfried (2025) and Götterdämmerung (2026), which will set the stage for The Atlanta Opera to achieve a major goal of its current Strategic Plan – mounting the Southeast’s first complete Ring Cycle.
We made enormous progress this season on another major goal in our strategic plan—establishing a permanent home for The Atlanta Opera’s offices, Film Studio and rehearsal facilities. After a frustrating five-year search, we had a breathtaking breakthrough —one of our Board members introduced us to the opportunity to
restore, renovate and expand the old Bobby Jones Golf Course Clubhouse.
Seizing this opportunity required a village—many thanks to the Georgia Building Authority, the City of Atlanta (including Mayor Dickens, City Council President Shipman, Council Member Norwood, Interim City Attorney Perkins-Hooker, and Parks & Recreation Commissioner Cutler and Deputy Commissioner Maher), the Haynes Manor Recital Hall Foundation, the Peachtree Battle Alliance, the Atlanta Memorial Park Conservancy, our company’s superb staff leadership, our Board Facilities Task Force and the law firm of Nelson Mullins, which provided pro bono legal work.
Thanks to their combined efforts, The Atlanta Opera now has a longterm ground lease for nearly five acres on the Beltline overlooking Atlanta Memorial Park where we will transform the old Clubhouse into a world-class recital hall and our company’s permanent home.
Creating this facility will be a massive undertaking for our company, but with the extraordinary support of our Atlanta Opera family, we are highly confident that this dream also will become a reality.
Many, many thanks to our entire Atlanta Opera family – donors, patrons, volunteers, Board members, staff, artists and everyone else who dreams of things that never were and helps us make those dreams come true.
Rhys Wilson
As I write this annual report, our production of The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs , last seen at The Atlanta Opera in 2022, is about to open at The Kennedy Center as a part of The Washington National Opera season. Reflecting on Steve Jobs’ famous words, “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward. So, you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future,” I realize how profoundly this sentiment resonates with our journey. The 2023–24 season marked a pivotal moment when the dots finally connected for us in remarkable ways.
Our season began with an innovative collaboration with Alliance Theatre, presenting an operatic adaptation of Stephen King’s The Shining . This edgy production captivated sold-out audiences and brought new life to King’s iconic novel. We followed this season opener with a blockbuster production of Verdi’s Rigoletto , which will travel to the Los Angeles Opera this summer. Finally, we celebrated
Halloween with a thrilling costume party, which followed the classic film Frankenstein , accompanied by a fresh, original opera-inflected score.
The spring season focused on love stories, starting with Atlanta’s firstever staging of Benjamin Britten’s surreal yet romantic A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The combination of Shakespeare and Britten in a breathtaking production was one of the highlights of the season. Next, came an audience favorite with a rendition of Puccini’s La bohème, starring some of the hottest stars of the opera world today. We concluded the season with Wagner’s Die Walküre, the most romantic opera in his Ring cycle in a critically acclaimed production. If this were not enough, we paired Wagner’s masterpiece with a onenight-only performance of Jake Heggie’s Another Sunrise at the iconic Temple, which allowed for a lively conversation about Wagner’s antisemitism and its impact on the world, to this day.
This season brought some of the greatest singers in the world
to Atlanta, including George Gagnize, Long Long, Gabriella Reyes, Madison Leonard, Greer Grimsley, Christine Goerke, Iestyn Davis, to name but a few. Their performances elevated our productions and left audiences spellbound.
The dots truly connected for us at the end of this season:
• The Atlanta Opera joined the ranks of the top 10 opera companies in America.
• We finalized an agreement to build a magnificent new opera center at the historic Bobby Jones Golf Course in Atlanta.
Looking back, had someone told me in 2013 that a decade later we would be staging Wagner’s Ring cycle, launching a new campaign for an opera center, and achieving national recognition as one of America’s top opera companies, I would have thought them crazy. In 2013, my focus was simply ensuring payroll and avoiding bankruptcy. Transforming a company from near collapse to
such radical growth requires years of hard work and a dedicated team of staff members, volunteers, community leaders, and board members.
As we navigate an increasingly uncertain political landscape, the significance of art, theater, and music continues to grow. The future of opera in Atlanta is bright, thanks to your support and belief in our vision. Together, we are creating something extraordinary. Thank you for being part of this journey.
Tomer Zvulun
The 2023-24 season marked a time of bold dreams and forward thinking for The Atlanta Opera. As the organization continued to flourish and grow, the need for additional space also expanded. The growing demands for rehearsal and studio facilities, along with dedicated areas for education, production, and administration, prompted an extensive search for a new home.
After exploring dozens of potential locations, an inspiring vision emerged—a facility that seamlessly combines historic charm with modern innovation located on the Atlanta Beltline. Currently planned as a 56,000 square foot facility, the building will provide areas for a 200-seat recital hall, a flexible rehearsal and immersive production space, a film
studio, a costume shop and fitting rooms, practice rooms, meeting rooms, staff and production offices, and various public spaces.

In addition to the students who enjoyed in-school and virtual performances, high school students attend the final dress rehearsal of each Opera production annually. In the 2023-24 season, more than 4,700 students cheered exciting performances that, for many, were their first experiences of a live opera performance.

Founded in 2016, Atlanta Opera’s Studio Artist program supports the skill and career development of the most promising young artists in opera. Highly sought-after by singers not only for the exceptional training opportunities, it offers a pathway to mainstage roles in leading operas. These apprentices regularly serve as “covers” and are also cast in leading roles at The Atlanta Opera. Alumni of the
program include artists who now have international careers and influential positions in the industry including Santiago Ballerini (2016), Brenna Corner (2016), Bryn Holdsworth (2016), Jonathan Bryan (2018), Susanne Burgess (2021), and Gretchen Krupp (2021).
The program is led by Meredith Wallace, Director of Artistic Administration, who directs a schedule of vocal coaching, role
study, and dialect lessons. The Studio Artists work with the renowned vocal trainer, acclaimed singer and teacher, Laura Brooks Rice.
