Wow—what a season for The Atlanta Opera! As detailed in this annual report, there were multiple highlights on the mainstage, on the Discoveries stages, at the Ray Charles Performing Arts Center, in elementary school auditoriums, on film and in livestreams, capped off with our stunning production of Das Rheingold, the first installment of Richard Wagner’s Ring cycle.

As reported in last year’s annual report, The Atlanta Opera’s bold decision to continue producing full operas during the pandemic has brought us unprecedented recognition and financial support. Using this success and strong financial base as a springboard, we completed a refresh of the company’s strategic plan. Here are some of the highlights:

• Vision, Mission & Values: We concluded that our Vision (Reimagining Opera!) and our Values (acronym CARPE DIEM) have served us well and they remain unchanged. We decided that our Mission needed updating to reflect the company’s expanded reach and impact, and our new mission statement is:

Breaking the boundaries of opera to create exceptional experiences for audiences everywhere.

CHAIR OF THE BOARD

We are excited and inspired by this new Mission and hope you, and our Atlanta Opera community, will be, too.

• Core Strategy: Produce Great Opera. This is our reason for being, and extends to all our efforts, including:

• Produce the company’s (and the Southeast’s) first complete Ring cycle.

• Build our Studio Artist program and create greater opportunities for upcoming and diverse artists.

• Expand the reach of our educational programming, veteran’s program, and other community engagement, both in person and through film and streaming.

• Establish a permanent home for the company’s offices, Film Studio, and rehearsal facilities (the Atlanta Opera Center).

• Explore Strategy: Innovate for the Future of Opera. While continuing to reimagine and produce operas from the traditional repertoire, we also want to play a major role in the future of opera. Here are some of the ways we will pursue this strategy:

• Commission new operas from today’s top composers and librettists.

• Expand the 96-Hour Opera Project into a Festival that produces new works by composers and librettists from underrepresented communities.

• Increase the distribution of the Film Studio’s art through digital platforms and traditional media to increase access for audience members unable to attend our productions in person and to reach audiences across the globe.

• Continue our Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion efforts, so all aspects of The Atlanta Opera reflect the diversity of Atlanta.

This is a very ambitious Strategic Plan, but one that we can accomplish with the continued and enthusiastic support of our artists, Board members, community partners, donors, patrons, and staff.

Many, many thanks to everyone who helped to make this a banner year for The Atlanta Opera. We have even more exciting seasons to come— please join us in breaking the boundaries of opera!

I’ll start this letter with a request. Before you read my letter, please flip to the back of this report and take a look at the multitude of individuals, foundations, corporations, and public agencies recognized in the donor listing. Please also look at the list of the Opera’s staff. Go on. I’ll wait.

Welcome back. This report is not just about our financial position, the productions we presented last season, and the innovations underway. It’s about the people who make The Atlanta Opera thrive. Each of us takes pride in the art we present and strives to exceed expectations.

To our donors, I express my deepest gratitude. Your trust and generosity have made all the achievements in this report possible. Thank you.

Some of you have been with us since the beginning, and we’ve come a long way. Our 2022-23 season marked a significant touchstone in the history of The Atlanta Opera. Last spring, we launched Atlanta’s first Ring cycle with our production of Das Rheingold, the first of the four music dramas by Richard Wagner that tells the story of gods, heroes, ultimate power, and ultimate destruction. Presenting these operas, works that transformed my life, has been a personal goal for nearly 20 years.

THE CARL W. KNOBLOCH, JR. GENERAL & ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Considered the biggest challenge in opera, creating a Ring production of all four operas needs a fully engaged company. A successful Ring requires an exceptional orchestra, top production and stage capabilities, powerful fundraising, and the best marketing and audience engagement strategies. We’ve been climbing to this goal and are the first opera company in the U.S. to launch a new Ring since the pandemic.

We also recently announced that The Atlanta Opera joins the top ten opera companies in America. This means that we are now in the same league as companies in other top cities in the United States: Seattle, Houston, Dallas, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. Even among these historic companies, we stand out for being the most financially stable. At a time when other companies are cutting back, dipping into endowments, or even closing, The Atlanta Opera has record-breaking sales, a carefully balanced budget, a growing endowment, and an increasing influence on industry best practices.

deliver a flawless production. And so much can go wrong— especially when innovating with fresh interpretations, new technologies, and introducing acclaimed singers to Atlanta audiences. Producing a live performance is the greatest, most thrilling mystery. You never know for certain that everything will work. And when it does work, there’s nothing quite like it.

As I start my second decade in Atlanta, a city that has become a beloved home for me and my family, I’m proud to share that this thriving, major international city is finally getting the major international opera company it deserves.

Atlanta’s innovation, inclusivity, creativity, and incredible vitality find their parallel in The Atlanta Opera. Thousands across six continents view our productions through free online streaming produced by The Atlanta Opera Film Studio. People travel from around the world to see The Atlanta Opera perform live. National and international media acclaim is growing with every production.

We are a global company for a global city. The best is yet to come.

Thank you,

This new status is both energizing and demanding. We work to deliver magic to the audience every single time. So many things must come together for a company to Tomer Zvulun

INNOVATION AT THE ATLANTA OPERA

The Atlanta Opera is expanding the art of opera. We are training young singers through the Glynn Studio Artist program, opening access through livestreaming and the development and distribution of cinematic operas, and making opportunities for emerging creatives—especially people who are traditionally underrecognized in opera—through the 96 Hour Opera Project.

GLYNN STUDIO ARTISTS

Founded in 2016, this program supports the skill and career development of the most promising young artists in opera. Under the guidance of Meredith Wallace, Director of Artistic Administration, many alumni have launched successful careers from their experiences in Atlanta.

SERVING THE COMMUNITY

Community programs and partnerships not only reach new audiences but bring welcome perspectives and new connections to The Atlanta Opera. Atlanta’s multi-cultural community created synergy for our productions of Madama Butterfly and Das Rheingold. Mental health advocates joined in discussions about memory care and aging. Cast members and music specialists engaged with audiences throughout the season for lively interactions.

COMMUNITY CONVERSATION: DEMENTIA, MEMORY, & CARETAKING

September 29, 2022 A partnership with WellStar College Faculty at Kennesaw State University to delve into the themes of Bluebeard’s Castle of aging, the breakdown of memory, and the challenges of caretaking.

COMMUNITY CONVERSATION: MADAMA BUTTERFLY—A MODERN INTERPRETATION

October 25, 2022 A partnership with the Japan America Society of Georgia to explore the challenges of historic Asian and Asian-American stereotypes in presenting Puccini’s famous opera.

OPERA INSIGHTS

November 2022 – May 2023 Prior to each mainstage performance, opera specialists present an informative lecture about the evening’s production. These pre-opera talks are designed to expand understanding and offer a boost of energy before the curtain goes up. Featured guests included Dr. Uzee Brown and Jay Hunter Morris.

POST-PERFORMANCE TALK BACKS

March 31 – April 2, 2023 Cast members discussed the life and work of composer Joseph Bologne, a French composer of African descent, and this adaptation of his opera The Anonymous Lover by Maria Todaro.

WAGNER’S JEWS—FILM SCREENING & PANEL DISCUSSION

April 30, 2023 A partnership with The Breman Museum to screen the documentary “Wagner’s Jews” with community discussion examining composer Richard Wagner’s complex relationships with Jewish people.

VETERANS TICKET PROGRAM

Since 2015, The Atlanta Opera has been honoring our veterans and activeduty military by offering fully sponsored tickets to all mainstage productions. Partnership with The Home Depot Foundation has made it possible for thousands of veterans and their guests to attend performances. In the 202223 season, nearly 2,500 tickets were distributed. This meaningful initiative is a point of pride in our service to our community.

“I had such a great time, as did my kids that joined me. I will say, as a veteran I greatly appreciate your ticket program. This was truly a wonderful experience. You deserve your place in the top 10!”
