to Global Exchange!

In this year’s Global Exchange magazine we celebrate the many people who contribute to our story—from our youngest learners in 3K to our graduating seniors, as well as the dedicated members of our school team whose work supports and strengthens this community every day.

For 40 years, AIS has been shaped by a commitment to bring people together.

From the beginning, this has meant more than gathering students and families from different places. It has meant building a truly intercultural and multilingual community, where many perspectives are not only present, but valued. At AIS students learn that the world is complex, that there is rarely one right answer, and that understanding grows when we listen, question, and are prepared to see through the eyes of others.

That spirit of openness is at the heart of an AIS education. Learning here is never fixed or finished. It is a continual process of growth, discovery, challenge, and progress. Our students are encouraged to think critically across cultures and be curious about the world. That is why AIS students are so sought after and well prepared for the places and spaces they go on to join.

As we reflect on what has been a fabulous milestone year, we also look forward with purpose. The AIS spirit, rooted in connection and growth, will continue to guide us into the future.

40 Years of Developing Courageous Leaders In case you hadn't noticed, AIS marked its 40th anniversary this year! And what a celebration it was. The morning we spent together creating the “40 on the Field” image will go down in school history (scan the code below to relive it), as will the 80s-themed anniversary Worldfest, the welcoming of the Class of 2040, and the record-breaking Spring Benefit, From Atlanta With Love.

The journey of the last 40 years, which has taken AIS from 51 to 1,350 students, representing nationalities and languages from around the globe, has been made possible by just one thing—you! Thank you to our AIS community for making the last four decades so special. We can’t wait for the next 40 to begin.

News, Updates, and Welcome on Board...

It has been a year of major developments at AIS, with more to follow over the next 12 months.

First, please join us in welcoming three new Board of Trustees members: Khoury Ashooh, Parrish Owens, and Mike Rezi. We also extend our sincere thanks to Heidi Deringer, Cal Fallaize, and Matt Mazzawi, who have completed their Board terms this year. The AIS Board of Trustees fulfills an incredibly important role as a highly dedicated steward of the school’s mission and core values.

Khoury is the founder of Andina Advisory, a Chile-based strategic leadership consulting firm focused on transformation and change.

Originally from New Hampshire, Khoury has worked across six continents, advising on high-level talent, culture, and organizational development.

He is fluent in Spanish and advanced in Portuguese, Khoury and his wife, Meg, are parents to Maisey ’29 and Aneley ’34.

Parrish, from Rome, GA, attended Florida State University (FSU), where he earned a degree in Marketing. He was most recently Vice President of Corporate Development at G&L Holdings.

Since the enterprise’s divestiture, he has established a family office focused on philanthropy.

Mike is the Managing Partner of top-performing automotive dealerships across Georgia and Tennessee, including Nissan, Kia, and Hyundai. He is known for his innovative model that prioritizes customer service and building diverse, multilingual dealership teams.

He serves on the Board of Thrive Academy and previously on the Boards of Darlington School, FSU Seminole Boosters, and others.

His son, James ’35, is in the Spanish program.

Mike served as Chairman of the Nissan National Dealer Advisory Board and holds a BBA and MBA from Kennesaw State University. He lives in Buckhead with his son, James ’37.

As we welcome these new trustees and thank those completing their service, we also celebrate the many ways AIS continues to move forward as a school community.

The school has delivered on many of its continuous improvement goals, meeting important milestones, including:

Sustainability at AIS To be more sustainable, the school now offsets around 30% of its own power consumption following the installation of solar panels in partnership with Cherry Street Energy. The next phase is to expand the EV charging network.

A Fresh Field You don’t need to be eagle-eyed to spot that the turf on Klaus Athletics Field has been replaced. Using new performance technology, students will get even more enjoyment from this exciting space.

The AIS App is Here!

The AIS App launched this year, bringing much of Veracross’s parent-facing functionality directly to smartphone users. For anyone who has yet to download or start using the app, scan the code here.

Learning with Toddle In other exciting technology news, the decision to adopt Toddle was finalized this year. Toddle will be rolled out over the next 24 months, streamlining student learning systems and allowing for much simpler parent-classroom communication across the school.

In the Early Learning Center (ELC), our youngest Eagles navigate complex concepts through play, exploration, and inquiry.

For Grade 5, celebrating learning also means travel. A distinctive part of the AIS experience happens when our final-year Primary students take their language skills way beyond the classroom. Their Grade 5 Journey Abroad takes them to China, Costa Rica, Germany, or France for 10 days of language and cultural immersion.

The excitement for the trips is palpable, and by the time students return, it is clear why this experience is so special.

Students put their skills into practice, whether ordering food, asking questions, meeting local students, or navigating daily life. It’s here that they see language not just as a subject, but as a way to connect people and cultures.

For many, the Journey Abroad is when it all clicks. After years of study—for some as long as eight years—students can communicate, participate, and experience another culture authentically, with confidence and independence. They return home with stories, memories, and a new sense of what they are capable of— the perfect preparation for Middle School.

SECONDARY SCHOOL INTERNATIONAL TRIPS In Secondary School, global learning takes on even more forms. Students can travel overseas through language programs, exchanges, and selected Eagles Learning Experiences (ELEx).

Last year’s overseas ELEx trips touched down in Iceland, Germany, Costa Rica, Mexico, and Panama, as you can see in these beautiful photos.

This fall, the options extend even further, with students heading to India, Italy, Spain, the Dominican Republic, and Guatemala for immersive learning beyond campus.

These opportunities are fundamental to the international education experience at AIS because they ask students to engage with the world directly. By navigating new places and cultures, and considering perspectives different from their own, students grow as independent, thoughtful, and culturally aware travelers. In doing so, they expand their horizons and their understanding of the world.

Effect

There are many aspects of an AIS education that set it apart from our peer schools, but language and the rigor of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program are particular standouts of what we’re calling The AIS Effect.

Earning an IB Bilingual Diploma requires patience but the rewards are far-reaching. At a time when large language models can translate in seconds, some may ask if it's still worth the effort. According to AIS Director of College Counseling, William Watter, the answer is a resounding yes! He explained: “Highly selective universities certainly think so. Having an IB Bilingual Diploma is about more than the ability to translate or communicate across languages; it signals cognitive flexibility, an ability to navigate different perspectives, and a willingness to take academic risks. So yes, it’s still a defining advantage.”

The benefits extend beyond university admissions, as Tom Curry, AIS parent and Senior Vice President, Global Corporate Affairs at InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), explained: “We value people who are culturally fluent and engage meaningfully in international contexts. These capabilities are difficult to teach and often hard to identify on a resume. An IB Bilingual Diploma signals the ability to think, communicate, and lead across cultures—exactly what global organizations like IHG need.”

While the advantages are clear, in the U.S., fewer than 5% of IB Diploma candidates earn the bilingual distinction. But at AIS, the number is significantly higher, around 30%.

According to data provided by AIS DP Coordinator Emily Koskovich, the timing of a student's arrival at AIS can make a meaningful difference.

56% of students who joined AIS between 3K and Grade 1 earned an IB Bilingual Diploma compared to the IB World average of 27% or the US average of around 5%.

From the Class of 2025, the 39 students who joined AIS between 3K and Grade 1 were the most likely to earn a Bilingual Diploma—56% received the qualification, accounting for 61% of all that were awarded that year.

But you don’t have to be a lifer to get The AIS Effect.

Those who join later also defy the national norms.

An incredible 23% of later-joining students still received highly sought-after Bilingual Diplomas in 2025.

Head of Primary School, Matt Hajdun, expanded on why language learning matters: “The cognitive benefits of bilingualism are well documented. MRI technology can identify differences between monolingual and bilingual brains.”

a student is learning and growing over time, providing teachers with valuable insights to support each child's progress. Our most recent scores tell an impressive story—with the majority of AIS students far exceeding their expected levels in both English literacy and math.

Around 50,000 schools globally participate in MAP testing, including other Atlanta-area independent schools. While every learner’s journey is unique, the AIS average sits significantly above national and peer-school benchmarks.

It has never been clearer that The AIS Effect is not simply preparing students to succeed in one language, or one subject, but equipping them to lead across them all.

“Bilingual students often demonstrate stronger academic performance, problem-solving skills, time management, and decision-making abilities. There is a moment, typically between Grades 5-7, where bilingual students outperform monolingual students. Their bilingual brains maximize the patterns they learned previously and expand them in new contexts, amplifying learning.”

That same depth of learning and long-range academic approach does not stop with world languages at AIS. Across English literacy and mathematics, AIS students benefit from the rigor that the IB continuum puts on understanding, real-world application, and connected learning.

Through a concept-based approach, students explore the why behind the what, so that knowledge can be applied.

Learning spans beyond single disciplines, giving it greater purpose.

One way AIS measures student growth is through the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment. Unlike a traditional end-of-year test, MAP measures how much

Lauren Muller ’32 is an avid reader and multilingual learner whose love of books has made the library one of her favorite places on campus.

Whether she is exploring a fantasy series or researching a project, she appreciates the written word and the appeal of old-fashioned print.

In an age when the pull of endless scrolling, misinformation, and algorithms is so strong, reading widely and carefully has never mattered more.

Books slow us down, invite us to explore complexity, and encourage us to engage with perspectives beyond our own. For Lauren, reading is not just a hobby; it’s a way of thinking.

When Lauren reads in French, she notices that stories feel different in another language, with names, details, and rhythms changing in translation.

For Lauren, the Visconti di Modrone Library at AIS is a welcoming space and her advice to anyone who has not yet found a love of reading is simple:

Reading widely and closely matters far beyond literature. Pascale Viala, AIS Associate Director of Library Services, reminds us, “We do not need a software update to stay safe in the AI age; we need a mindset shift. Before we share

One of the first books Lauren loved was The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Since then, stories have remained a constant in her life. This year alone, she estimates she has read more than 100 books, a feat that earned her a Middle School Award for Most Avid Reader.

‘‘I get totally immersed in the book. When someone asks me what I'm reading, I'm like, ‘Oh right, I'm here.’ ” Fantasy is Lauren’s favorite genre, especially series like Wings of Fire and Keeper of the Lost Cities. She loves books that open up new worlds, with characters who discover secrets and hidden talents. Lauren also enjoys classics and is currently reading The Lord of the Rings.

YOLANDA SPREADING THE LIGHT For Yolanda King, some of her fondest family memories begin at the dinner table. Ask her about the meals she loves most, and she recalls her grandmother’s pound cake recipe, her mom’s jambalaya, their New Year’s Eve fish fry, and the strawberry cake she has on her birthday from the bakery her aunts run. But the dinner table is about more than food. It is where ideas are debated, and lessons are carried from one generation to the next.

“My parents never forced me to be an activist,” she said. “But they let me be part of the conversations we had at dinner about the state of the world.”

The values formed around her family's dinner table are part of a legacy she now carries forward. Yolanda is the granddaughter of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, and the daughter of Martin Luther King III and Arndrea Waters King. She credits her mother with helping shape the person she is today. “My biggest inspiration is my mom,” she said. “The woman I’ve become and the values I hold started with her.” Beyond her family, she credits Atlanta International School with helping build the foundation for everything she knows today.

Yolanda’s AIS journey began in the Primary School language immersion program—“That’s where it all started for me,” she said—and today she is proud to be fluent in Spanish.

When it came time to write her first book, in Grade 5, she drew on a core principle of AIS’s International Baccalaureate approach, which encourages students to identify problems and develop solutions. “My problem was: how do you make social justice work accessible to the masses?” Her solution was We Dream a World: Carrying the Light from My Grandparents, a children’s book she says is not just for “little kids,” but for “big kids— adults too.”

In it, she writes that children are not too young to shape the world—they are essential to it. AIS also helped shape how she sees issues and the role individuals can play in addressing them. “In AIS’s curriculum there’s a lot of intersectionality between certain causes and issues,” she explained. “In a STEM or math class, you might learn about the humanitarian philosophy behind it. That really built my character and my approach to activism.”

I believe everybody has a gift

human rights. In her graduation speech, she reflected on a lesson her grandmother often shared with the family: “Freedom is never really won—you earn it and win it in every generation.” Now, she believes it is her generation's turn to carry that work forward.

For Yolanda, that means advocating for a world where everyone is treated fairly and no one’s rights are violated.

Her advice to the students coming up behind her is simple: “Being a courageous leader, it's not just within the [AIS] campus. We should spread it throughout the world.” She encourages younger students to recognize the strengths they already possess. “I believe everybody has a gift. So use that gift… to create an impact.”

In 1964, her grandfather traveled to Oslo, Norway, to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

Decades later, Yolanda followed in his footsteps, speaking at the Nobel Peace Prize Forum. Although immensely grateful for the invitation, she felt something heavier beneath the honor. “It’s disappointing to see that we haven’t progressed as far as we committed to,” she said. Her grandfather, she believes, envisioned that the world would be much further along by now.

Her family’s Realize the Dream initiative— which Yolanda founded with her parents— takes on that unfinished work: a goal of 100 million hours of service by what would have been Dr. King’s 100th birthday in 2029.

Service, she says, can close even the hardest distances between people. “You don’t need to have the same perspective to be able to serve in a community and be able to give back.”

This fall, Yolanda heads to Columbia University to study creative writing and

With an emphasis on individual expression, AIS visual arts students use their creativity and technical skills to communicate with meaning.

Whether tackling world issues, taking action, or exploring new concepts, they draw on their knowledge of art history and use a range of skills and media to express their own ideas and viewpoints.

The results can be seen at specially-curated art exhibitions, both on and off campus, including at the High Museum of Art, The Supermarket, and as part of this year's #MyFreedomDay art showcase.

Standing Ovation Atlanta International School’s music program provides students with opportunities to grow as musicians through performance, teamwork, and engagement with peers and educators, both at home and across the nation.

In March 2026, AIS ensembles representing band, orchestra, and choir from grades 6–12 traveled to the WorldStrides Heritage Festival in Orlando, where they earned top ratings and recognition from a national panel of adjudicators.

Both bands earned Gold ratings, the orchestra earned a Silver rating, and the Upper School Band took first place and received an invitation to the Festival of Gold. The Middle School Band earned second place.

The AIS Orlando Festival Choir earned a Gold rating, the Adjudicator Award, and was named Outstanding Choir of the Festival among 11 ensembles! The group also received invitations to perform at the Festival of Gold and at Carnegie Hall.

AIS musical achievement rang out loud and clear. Bravo!

EXPERIENCE THE SMELL OF

REBELLION In 1988, Roald Dahl introduced readers to Matilda Wormwood, a young genius who refused to accept the world as she found it. Years later, Tim Minchin transformed her story into Matilda the Musical, filled with sharp humor and larger-than-life characters.

At the center stood one of musical theatre's most memorable villains: Miss Trunchbull, the fearsome headmistress who has terrified and delighted audiences ever since. To build the character, Brandt von Kutzleben ’26 drew inspiration vocally from figures like Maggie Smith, Julia Child, and physically from cartoon villains. “My theory was that Trunchbull peaked early in life and spent the rest of her life trying to maintain that feeling of power and control.”

Despite her flaws, Brandt found inspiration in Trunchbull's relentless drive. “Out of the many negative traits that she possesses, I saw that one as very inspiring and applicable to my everyday life.” The role also challenged his perfectionism. “It taught me how much I rely on control,” he reflected.

“It reminded me that some of the best moments happen when you're willing to take risks and accept that things won't always go perfectly.”

During his powerhouse solo, The Smell of Rebellion, the character finally clicked for him. “I sort of let go and fully committed to the ridiculousness of the character. I started making choices based on what Miss Trunchbull would do rather than what I would do.” Audiences embraced the production, “I loved that people could laugh at her one moment and be intimidated by her the next.”

In the show's climactic finale, Matilda uses her telekinetic powers to send a message across a classroom chalkboard, unraveling the control Trunchbull fought so desperately to maintain. “Almost everything happening in that moment is internal,” Brandt explained. “I spent a lot of time figuring out how to show Trunchbull's fear and loss of control without completely abandoning who she is.” As he exited the stage for the final time on closing night, he knew he had left everything there.

The performance earned recognition through the Shuler Awards, Georgia's celebration of high school musical theatre. For Brandt, the honor was powerful because of the community it opened up. “What meant the most was getting to meet other students who care about theatre as much as I do and realizing how much I can still learn as an artist.”

“Commit completely.

You can't be afraid of embarrassing yourself or looking ridiculous, because that's exactly what makes the role work.”

After seven years of AIS theatre, Brandt says it's the friendships he'll remember most. “Getting to watch us grow as artists has truly been a blessing.” This fall, he will attend the University of Georgia, where he plans to study Vocal Performance and Finance while continuing to pursue opportunities onstage. His long-term goal is to continue in professional theatre, perhaps one day on Broadway.

Brandt hopes Matilda inspires future performers to take more risks. “I hope people feel empowered to challenge themselves and realize the potential within them,” he said.

FINDING SOLUTIONS INNOVATION

INNOVATION IN ACTION

Innovation at AIS can mean entrepreneurship, AI, competitions, and community impact. Whatever its focus, all innovations are rooted in helping students turn ideas into action.

TOP INVENTURE HONORS

Now in its fourth year, AIS NEST serves as the Innovation Team’s entrepreneurship program.

This year's participants learned not just to present clever ideas, but to identify genuine ’’pain points,’’ using interviews to validate before building prototypes. Each team pitched to a panel of t’’teacher sharks’’—with just five minutes to seek real support!

FROM NEST TO BEST Meghna Manoj ’31 and Grace Le ’31 placed first at the K–12 InVenture Prize for PlanPal, an AI-driven platform to help students manage academic and vocational work. The win carried them to the National Invention Convention in Detroit, where they represented AIS among 513 finalists chosen from more than 300,000 participants!

Invited to Washington, D.C. by Congresswoman Lucy McBath, he presented to members of Congress and Senator Jon Ossoff presented him with the Georgia Youth Leadership Award.

A ’’FOUNDING FIFTY’’ SCHOOL AIS earned the Responsible AI in Learning Endorsement in AI Literacy, Safety, and Ethics from the Middle States Association, our accrediting body, placing AIS among the world’s ’’Founding Fifty’’ schools to receive it. The endorsement confirms that our practices allow us to integrate AI responsibly and help other schools to stay safe and stay ahead.

AIS GUIDE FOR A DIGITAL WORLD This fall, AIS will launch Courageous Leaders in a Digital World, a guide that helps families support digital learning. It equips parents to nurture the curiosity, judgment, and responsibility students need in an AI-shaped world, reinforcing classroom learning with support at home.

IHOT STAYING POWER AIS Robotics team, IHOT, closed its 2026 season—its 22nd year—as the only team to win the Creativity Award at all three of its competitions. The season's real story was perseverance: overcoming early design challenges, navigating redesigns, and rapidly manufacturing under pressure. At the Columbus Qualifier, Kareem Aziz ’27 was named a FIRST Leadership Award semifinalist.

One AIS Eagle athlete who had everyone on their feet cheering was Benoit Delly ’26. Benoit brought home a State Championship in the 400-meter Dash at the GHSA A-AAA Private State Track and Field Championships, earning the title of 2026 State champion and cementing his place among the top athletes in Georgia.

He was the first AIS individual state track and field Champion since Cara Joyce ’22 brought home titles in 2022.

Our entire AIS community is incredibly proud of Benoit for this outstanding accomplishment. He will continue his athletic career next year at Cornell University, where he will compete in Division I track and field.

AISx Flexible Learning

FOLLOWING THEIR PATH Now in its fourth year, AISx, the flexible schedule pathway for students pursuing passions outside of school, is expanding to support even more students.

Currently, AISx students are pursuing high-level tennis through the Mouratoglou Academy Atlanta partnership, soccer with Atlanta United Football Club, and dedicated training, competition, and performance in fencing, golf, music, and performing arts.

Designed to offer a more personalized school schedule and approach to learning, AISx allows students in grades 6–12 the flexibility to pursue academic, athletic, artistic, and professional passions—without compromise.

AISx students’ specially modified daily schedules mean they can spend more time on the tennis court, soccer pitch, golf course, in a practice studio, or on stage.

AIS has always put student passions and choice at the heart of learning. AISx puts that promise into action at the highest level, and we look forward to supporting more highly focused and dedicated young people in the years to come.

My day as an AISx student starts the same as everyone else, but once I get to tennis, everything changes—from pace to play to individual learning.

AISx is quality education with flexible scheduling. I never wanted to compromise my academics for athletics, but I also wanted a way to balance them.

This has given me the opportunity to do both at the highest level that I can.

How does AISx work with your travel and competition schedule?

I travel a lot for tournaments, and they usually last three to four days, plus practice rounds. With AISx, I come to school most mornings and have my free blocks at the end of the day so I can leave early for practice.

Knowing I’m not missing as much class as I would if I were a regular DP student makes a big difference.

I never wanted to compromise my academics for athletics.

A National Merit Scholarship Program finalist, she served as an AIS Student Ambassador, representing the school through bilingual tours, and as Co-Captain of the AIS Math Club while participating in Science Olympiad and Biology Olympiad.

Her IB Extended Essay focused on CAR T-cell therapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and her Girl Scout Gold Award project addressed vaccine hesitancy through educational outreach and community engagement.

Yolanda King

2026 Educational Collaborative for International Schools Award for International Understanding Yolanda was recognized for her leadership, advocacy, and commitment to service locally and globally. She founded AIS’s first literary magazine, Golden Feather, creating a platform to celebrate diverse voices and cultures within the school community.

Her work has included speaking at the United Nations on combating racism and promoting justice, supporting voting rights initiatives, and chairing the Youth Council for the Realize the Dream Foundation. She was also invited to participate in the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize Forum panel discussion on democracy and peace.

The AIS Eagle Award is given to the senior who has most embodied and exemplified the AIS Mission and Core Values throughout their time at the school.

Gianmarco Di Pelino AIS 2026 Eagle Award

Recognized for his leadership, humility, creativity, academic commitment, and service to others, Gianmarco was praised for the lasting impact he has had on the school community. In addition to his academic achievements and collaborative spirit, he was commended for co-leading the fully student-produced and directed performance of Tick, Tick… Boom! and for mentoring younger students through primary productions and summer theatre camps.

Dear Class of 2026, Congratulations... again... You did it!

As I thought about my final message to you, I found myself returning to the theme I have shared many times before: moments.

One particular moment has stayed with me since graduation day.

After the ceremony and congratulatory celebrations were cut short by the sudden rain, it suddenly dawned on me that I would never address the Class of 2026 as a group again. If I am honest, I felt saddened by that realization.

What struck me most in that moment was that I had not been following my own advice. I had been so focused on helping make the day special and memorable for all of you that I had not appreciated that our own journey was also coming to an end. It was a reminder that even when we know a moment is important, we can become so focused on what comes next that we forget to be present.

When people look back on high school, they often remember the big milestones, and they should. These moments matter. They deserve to be celebrated. But what I also hope you carry with you are the smaller moments that happened in between. It is the combination of all these times that has shaped you into the fantastic people you are today.

A point that brought me a sense of gratitude was the opportunity to congratulate each of you in the final moments before you walked across the stage to receive your diploma. A smile, a handshake, a fist bump, a hug, or a few words of encouragement to calm the nerves—simple interactions that lasted only seconds but represented years of growth, perseverance, and achievement. Those brief exchanges filled me with pride and gratitude as I watched you take those final steps as AIS students.

As you take the next steps in life, remember that success is rarely the result of one defining moment. It is often achieved through consistent effort, thoughtful decisions and actions, resilience during setbacks, and the willingness to learn from every experience. All qualities that you have demonstrated during your time at AIS. Continue to embrace challenges. Continue to hold yourselves accountable. Continue to give grace to others and to yourselves. Most importantly, continue to appreciate the moments.

ENTREPRENEURS From AIS to Business Success Building a business requires creativity, resilience, and a willingness to learn through experience. Meet four AIS alumni who transformed ideas into thriving ventures across technology, wine, coffee, and the arts. Their stories offer insight into entrepreneurship, leadership, and the lessons they've learned along the way.

FRANCISCO MARTIN-RAYO ’02 "What if we could predict agricultural disruptions before they happen?" That question led Francisco Martin-Rayo, co-founder and CEO of Helios AI, from importing avocados to building an AI platform. Helios AI helps food companies and commodity buyers anticipate supply shocks, forecast prices, and navigate the growing impacts of climate change.

Francisco credits AIS with encouraging curiosity, independence, and comfort with taking unconventional paths. "AIS exposed me to people from all over the world and taught me to be comfortable with different perspectives," he says.

His biggest lesson as a founder surprised him. "Building a company is ultimately about people. Great ideas matter, but assembling the right team and creating a culture of trust matters even more." His advice: "Be curious and start earlier than you think you're ready. Spend time understanding real problems, talk to lots of people, and build something small.

Most importantly, don't be afraid to fail. Every setback teaches you something valuable."

CAMILLE STABLER ’03 "Wine is ultimately about connection—to place, to people, and to shared experiences," says Camille Stabler, co-owner of Out of Necessity Wines, a family winery in Oregon's Ribbon Ridge AVA. Alongside her husband, Merritt Kain, Camille planted an estate vineyard and built the business from the ground up, producing smalllot Pinot Noir and Chardonnay while farming with organic practices.

The journey required patience and persistence. For nearly six years, the couple lived in a 23-foot travel trailer while developing the property and establishing the winery.

AIS, she says, encouraged curiosity and independent thinking.

"I learned that there is rarely a single 'correct' answer to a problem."

Her advice: build on authenticity, purpose, and strong relationships.

"The willingness to persist through setbacks is often more important than any single idea."

WILLOW GOLDSTEIN ’05 "Creative spaces don't thrive by accident—they require intention, collaboration, and sustainable support," says Willow Goldstein, founder of The Bakery Atlanta and Two Tree Studios, the organization behind The Supermarket art space and event venue. For nearly a decade, Willow has created spaces where artists, entrepreneurs, nonprofits, and communities can gather and connect through cultural programming and shared experiences.

Entrepreneurship, she says, often means balancing big ideas with practical problem-solving. "There is rarely a roadmap, and many decisions have to be made even when you don't know the answer."

AIS helped her "become comfortable persevering through hard tasks, embracing ambiguity, and staying curious when the answers aren't obvious."

Her biggest lesson: passion alone is not enough. "Sustainable organizations require strong systems, financial discipline, clear priorities, and great teams." Her advice: "Stay curious. The ability to ask thoughtful questions and keep learning has been one of the most valuable skills throughout my career."

EUGENIO MENDEZ ’19 "I wanted to create a brand that highlighted both the quality of the coffee and the people behind it," says Eugenio Mendez, founder of Cinco Cielos Coffee Company. What began as a bridge between two places that shaped him—Mexico and Colombia—has grown into an award-winning specialty coffee brand built on the stories of the producers behind every cup.

The early days were entirely hands-on. Eugenio packed orders, designed labels, learned Shopify, and delivered products himself across Atlanta. "Every sale felt significant because it represented someone believing in an idea that was still taking shape," he says.

One of his biggest lessons: "Sustainable growth requires systems, consistency, and patience."

His advice: "Start before you feel ready. You learn entrepreneurship by doing it. Your first version will not be perfect, and that’s okay."

Avery Nesbitt took over as AIS Director of Operations at the start of the academic year. Find out about his first year and a little more about the team!

What’s unique is that Operations isn’t behind the scenes; it’s part of the student experience.

Please tell us a little bit about yourself and your background.

I have over 16 years of experience in multi-site nonprofit operational leadership across Georgia and Nicaragua.

In Nicaragua, I served with Lifelink International in Managua, supporting construction and facilities at Centro Escolar Lifelink Internacional. The campus served over 500 students daily through education, healthcare, community development, leadership training, and vocational programs.

What is unique about looking after the AIS campus?

What’s unique is that Operations isn’t behind the scenes; it’s part of the student experience.

I’ve had fifth graders stop by my office asking about our sustainability impact, both locally and globally, after seeing the solar panels on the roof.

They weren’t just interested; they were genuinely curious, and I love it.

Is working in an international school different?

Working at an international school is different in every way. Walking the halls, I might hear four different languages in a matter of minutes. I get to be part of planning deeply meaningful cultural events that are more than just something to do, but are experiences that connect to who they are. And let’s not forget the food: we have our own version of Epcot. You can truly eat around the world.

Any reflections on the past year?

It’s been an incredible year. We’ve launched a shuttle program, installed solar panels that now support 30% of our power, and introduced a Primary Makerspace. But what I’ve found most meaningful is the joy of doing things for the second time: my second Black Wall Street, my second Graduation, my second car parade.

Beyond the projects, it’s been a year of connection, growth, and learning alongside some pretty amazing people.

I truly feel like I’m at home.

What is your favorite spot on campus?

My favorite spot on campus is the lobby of the ASD. I can find a table in the back

to catch up on work or have a meeting, all while watching students quiz each other, laugh, and enjoy everything AIS has to offer. And Ms. Hansen is my go-to for all things AIS.

What are your plans for the future?

My plans for the future are to prepare the campus for the next 10 years, with projects like the new soccer field, expanded sustainability initiatives, and new spaces that support the joy of learning. I love when what I do directly impacts the life of a student.

AIS SPRING BENEFIT

For our 40th anniversary, we turned the spotlight on Atlanta, our home since 1984—four decades and counting. The evening raised more than $1 million for need-based financial aid and our students.

With 650 guests, the night brought our community together for spirited auction bidding and homegrown Atlanta talent: spoken word artist Adán Bean debuted a custom poem, The CommUNITY ATL Choir—now on America's Got Talent—performed, and AIS dad and former NFL and University of Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray emceed. We welcomed Mayor Andre Dickens, and Grammy-winning producer Jermaine Dupri closed with a DJ set.

Each year the Spring Benefit highlights one of the 90 nationalities and 60 languages represented within our AIS community. We are excited to announce China as the theme of the 2027 Spring Benefit.
