atlantahomesmag.com/events

WHILE THIS PAST SPRING afforded us the opportunity to quite literally watch nature’s re-awakening unfold, the ensuing months have seemed almost seasonless, as the pandemic, and its inherent monotony, persists. Fast-forward to fall, and let’s just say that all of us at Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles are more than looking forward to a change of scenery, whether it’s cooler temperatures, nights by the fire or re-connecting with nature in ways we only once wished were possible. In our own family, we’ve taken up stand-up paddle, hiking and wading through creeks…essentially letting our boys be boys in the absence of organized sports and summer camp. Speaking of reconnecting with nature, this month we step inside the expansive property of a former

Through A Designer’s Eye

Vital Voices A thought-provoking book and exhibition, Vital Voices: 100 Women Using Their Power to Empower (Assouline, $60) is an inspirational tome every generation can turn to. Original portraits accompany first-person excerpts from some of the world’s most influential women, including Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Bozoma Saint John and more.

Escapology Island Hopping An island vacation has never felt closer thanks to Island Hopping (Vendome Press, $60) by designer Amanda Lindroth. Known for her airy, relaxed aesthetic, Lindroth shares 25 projects—from Lyford Cay to Great Cranberry, Maine—that reflect the charming personas of beloved beach towns. 8

Autumnal colors and cozy seasonal getaways are on full display in Colin McAllister’s and Justin Ryan’s new book Escapology: Modern Cabins, Cottages and Retreats (Figure1 Publishing, $35). From treehouses and mountain lodges to lakeside getaways, the book, which hits bookshelves November 17, takes readers across the world with a collection of shelters that inspire quiet, tranquil living.

Entertaining Beautifully From modern day style icon and tastemaker, the eponymous tome Aerin Lauder: Entertaining Beautifully (Rizzoli, $55) is a must-read for every hostess. Organized by season and featuring more than 20 celebrations, Lauder spills her best-kept secrets—and her most cherished childhood traditions— that will make any event a memorable one.

10

ATLANTA HOMES & LIFESTYLES: From the outset of your book, Rattan: A World of Elegance and Charm, you make rattan feel not only iconic and elegant, but dare we say sexy. What were some of your favorite discoveries as you produced this book? LULU LYTLE: Every discovery I made has reinforced my fascination and love for rattan and the special atmosphere it creates in any environment. In virtually every single photograph with rattan chairs, people are having proper fun! Synonymous with good times and relaxation, well-designed rattan is the “Bright Young Thing” of the furniture world; glamorous, easygoing and at the center of it all! It is often sexy, especially in the hands of photographers like Slim Aarons and Horst. AH&L: How has your research informed the ways that you and your craftspeople at Soane look at creating inspired but fresh pieces?

LL: I have learned to consider combining rattan with other materials to create designs. Adding hidden steel, for example, to make cantilevered chairs. Our more experienced craftsmen are perfectionists which can inhibit them from experimenting when they feel the chances of success are low. Studying old designs and questioning how they might have been made has emboldened them to push boundaries and try new techniques, to date always with success! AH&L: Complete this sentence: I love rattan for its... LL: Atmosphere and understated glamour that it adds to any setting. Furnishings made by hand from rattan have a depth and irregular beauty, which their soulless, mass-produced imitators could only dream of. AH&L: There’s a sense of nostalgia in Rattan that’s invoked through both paintings and

vintage photographs. Yet, Soane’s handwoven furniture not only looks current, but has an incredible range. Tell us about some of the most interesting pieces that your company has created through the years? LL: We have made many extraordinary, bespoke commissions in the last 15 years. One we were particularly proud of was a cleanlined rattan-and-steel bench designed by Sir Norman Foster to sit at the entrance of the Maggie’s Cancer Centre he designed in Manchester. A large rattan bar for André Balazs’ Chiltern Firehouse in London was also fun to make. Most of all, I am excited by lighting commissions as I have always loved the way woven rattan shades diffuse light into a soft, atmospheric glow, creating abstract patterns and shadows. AH&L: Rattan is evocative of exotic locales and sunny climates. Yet Soane is located in England. Tell us some of the far-flung locales, like Cobblers Cove Barbados, where we can find it? LL: A commission to make lots of Venus chairs (my very first rattan design) for a tearoom in a hotel in Hong Kong felt like a watershed moment (sending rattan back to Asia!). Lifesize baby elephants, vast beds and monumental sofas have been made for homes in Mustique, Costa Rica and Croatia, whilst the Caribbean and the Eastern Seaboard remain the most popular destinations for our rattan designs. AH&L: If there was one arbiter of taste and style—current or past— that you could choose to represent the Soane brand of rattan, who would it be? LL: So difficult to choose just one when there are lots of names that spring to mind, but I think it would have to be Cleopatra.

Designer Veere Grenney combines his own rattan designs, custom-made by Soane Britain, with antique indigo textiles and unbleached linen in a holiday house on Mustique.

Rattan: A World of Elegance and Charm (Rizzoli, $65) hits bookshelves this month. The insightful tome takes readers around the world to examine the history, craftmanship and versatility of rattan. From Josef Frank to Cecil Beaton, go back in time with celebrated tastemakers and indulge in the iconic inclusions of vintage rattan. rizzoliusa.com

CLAUD CECIL GURNEY

ATLANTA HOMES & LIFESTYLES: From the mythical to the whimsical to the historical and provocative, de Gournay is known to “raise the spirits of its clients and infuse their homes with happiness and ambience.” How have you seen de Gournay taste evolve to suit the tastes of a new generation? CLAUD CECIL GURNEY: Everyone thinks they are a “new generation,” but they all aspire ultimately to a Palladian mansion in Lombardy—and build it in Malibu if they can’t afford to buy the original. I am not sure that good taste can evolve? To the extent that people move into high rises, have larger powder rooms and bathrooms, live in their kitchens, use air-conditioning and stop entertaining on the grand scale, preferring to invite friends to a club or restaurant, this generation is different and we just work 12

our magic on different spaces created for different purposes. I hope all generations, old and new, will appreciate us! AH&L: De Gournay has been applied to everything from the dog kennel to children’s ceilings to the scullery. What are some of the more intriguing—or most unlikely—spaces and locales in which de Gournay has been installed and taken on a life of its own? CCG: We had one client who insisted that his dollhouses were so wonderful that they called for hand-painted wallpapers, and was somewhat vexed that we had to scale the whole thing down and paint it as a custom order with the consequent cost implications, but the result was beautiful and he came back for more. Once we papered a dog-grooming room that doubled as a laundry. I am still uncertain whether the dogs were able to appreciate

the luxurious surroundings, or whether it relaxed them and if they were aware of the huge expense their mistresses were lavishing on them. AH&L: In the book, you write: “The opportunities to do something original are few and far between.” How have recent collaborations with fashion designers like Erdem, or other industry outsiders, resulted in surprising but exciting results? CCG: Many surprises, much excitement, but few original ideas that have not been inspired by or loosely based on some pre-existing design, house or element taken from nature. Erdem’s genius was in being able to choose the designs and the colorways and scales that adapted best to the world of fashion and the dresses he crafted so beautifully. Such attention to detail is rare. Edgardo and Ricardo of Aquazzura somehow chose the perfect shoes to fit to our designs and the perfect designs to fit to their shoes—we still have clients today desperately trying to source more of the same. It’s magical when it all works out, and we adore the crossover between fashion and design.

CREATIVE FREEDOM

THE AUTUMN OPENING of INDIE STUDIOS is serendipitous for the team behind the workspace for design-oriented creatives. “A lot of things are fortuitous about our design. When those decisions were made, no one could have known the value of them,” explains Gene Kansas, whose eponymous company developed the space on behalf of CineMassive. Indie, a converted 1957 warehouse designed by Revive Architecture principal Laura Daniel and furnished by interior designer Tara Dennis of Archie Bolden, is located on Buckhead’s Armour-Ottley Loop and will feature 12 private studios for teams of eight to 20 staffers. Each features its own HVAC system (so you’re not breath-

Andy Peters of The Peters Company, a Keller Williams Realty team, has also noticed a trend of “lifestyle moves”—relocation due to preference, rather than a job. “[Out of town] clients have a bullish attitude toward Atlanta,” he says. “They’re looking for better spaces to work. Living space is more important than bedroom space, and media rooms and pools are hot-button search criteria.” Competition for those homes is fierce. As of August, Peters says, “If no new houses hit the market, it would take 1.9 months to sell everything. And 60% of the homes are selling at or above list price.”

ATLANTA, WITH ITS TEMPERATE weather, favorable business environment and affordability, has become a top spot for relocations. Tori Hughes of Harry Norman, Realtors has several current clients making the move from New York and California, many of which are purchasing homes on multiacre lots. “They want to be out of the congestion,” she says. “After being stuck in a 1,300-square-foot home with kids, they want to be able to breathe.” Hughes also sees clients seeking larger homes overall. “Budgets are going up. Interest rates are so low, they have more buying power,” she notes.

Naomi Von Habersham ONE OF THE CHALLENGES TO GROWING older is trying to stay up to date with technology. The last thing I want is to get left behind in the Dark Ages, so as soon as I hear people talking about the latest gadget, I race out to buy it, telling myself it’s important to keep up with the times. But once I figure out how to use it, I’m always left with the same question: If these tech gadgets are supposed to make my life easier, why do they end up making it a lot more difficult? Take those voice-control assistants. I won’t name names, but you know what I’m talking about. I was told that at the command of my voice, the thing could tell me the outdoor temperature, play my favorite songs and telephone my friends. Well, it was that last feature that really got me into hot water. My so-called smart assistant started dialing my friends at four in the morning, and when they answered their phones, all they heard was my snoring! Had the device gone rogue and decided to prank call people, or had it simply gone haywire? I’ll never know, because the next day I fired it. It’s now boxed up in the basement. Then there is my smart thermostat. It was going to be great, because I never had to leave the comfort of my sofa to change it. The only problem was that by the time I located my phone, got on the app and reset the temperature, I could have just as easily walked over and manually adjusted it myself. And don’t even get me started on those expensive smart light bulbs I bought, the ones that were supposed to allow me to change the light color to all kinds of crazy hues. I would have loved that for my last pre-Covid party, but I never could get them to work. I’ve decided that at my age, I just don’t need this aggravation. Moving forward, I’ll leave the smart technology to the young and savvy.

ONE MEAL WAS ALL IT TOOK to convince restaurateur Fred Castellucci of Castellucci Hospitality Group that Atlanta lacked an approachable, authentic sushi restaurant operating with true Southern hospitality. So long as New York City’s world-class sushi chef J. Trent Harris—who Castellucci said prepared him the best sushi dinner he’d ever tasted—would spearhead the new venture. After years in the making, Castellucci and Harris have opened elevated omakase sushi concept MUJŌ, where the offerings resemble art and Harris, most certainly, is an artist. Hosted by West Midtown’s Cooks & Soldiers, the takeoutonly pop-up offers a limited menu from Wednesday to Sunday. Think rice bowls (donburi), small plates (zensai)—like snow crab and caviar or slow-cooked octopus—and 6- and 10-piece nigiri sushi options that reflect a modern take on Edomae tradition (fish aged and cured to elevate the natural flavor). “We’re respectful of the traditions, flavors and techniques of Edomae sushi, but use local ingredients when possible and play with the dishes subtly to make food that feels appropriate for who I am and where we are in Atlanta,” says Harris. And Atlanta is lucky to have Harris. Thanks to MUJŌ, guests can now experience the flavors—and culture—of Japan from the comfort of their homes. “In Japanese there is a saying, ‘ichi-go ichi-e,’ which translates as ‘one time, one meeting,’” says Harris. “The term reminds people to cherish each moment in life because it can’t be repeated; each moment is always a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I hope our food can be a way for people to share a moment.” mujoatl.com

Camp Twin Lakes provides deeply impactful camp experiences for children and adults with serious illnesses, disabilities, and other life challenges. Our intentionally-designed programs help campers overcome obstacles as they learn new skills to more independently manage their challenges. As they make memories with their peers, the isolation they often feel vanishes in the comfort of new friendships forged by the strongest of bonds—the challenges they have in common.

Country Strong Sunny, a miniature horse, makes an entrance in the breakfast room, where an extra long table offers the perfect spot for both meals and game nights. Keeping durability top of mind, designer Lauren Davenport Imber opted for vinyl seat chairs with a Lee Jofa wool fabric on the back, while the host chairs feature a sturdy leather front and linen back.

Southern Simplicity In the keeping room, Davenport Imber transformed a beloved chair once belonging to the wife’s grandmother with fawn hide and leather. The table and pedestal are from Scott Antique Markets.

W WHEN THE HOMEOWNER of this country estate gets a call from her interior designer, Lauren Davenport Imber, she’s likely knee-deep in a project, and not in the figurative sense. “I’ll give her a ring with a design question,” says Davenport Imber, “And it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary for her to say, ‘Well, at the moment I’m pouring sweat, digging holes in the ground for a new fence.’” While it may seem like a chore to most, it’s exactly where this homeowner wants to be; firmly rooted in her family’s 100-acre wooded property in Whitesburg, Georgia, which is a striking contrast to the city life she shared with her husband and two sons just years before. “They describe themselves as fifth-generation Atlantans who decided to run for the forest,” Davenport Imber adds with a laugh. In their search for trading city lights for starry skies, they happened upon a verdant parcel of land that ticked all the boxes. It

was close enough to Atlanta for the husband’s daily commute to work, contained a river ideal for fishing and boasted plenty of acreage for hunting and riding horses as well as room to add a chicken coop and introduce new animals to their brood. While they worked on cleaning up the overgrown land to also make way for vegetable gardens and fruit trees, the property’s existing home similarly needed attention. Built in the 1980s, the couple enlisted architect Steve Dray to reconfigure its layout to better suit their lifestyle. A downstairs bedroom was turned into a bar area for entertaining while the master suite was expanded, among other changes. The wife was brimming with ideas on how to decorate, but knew she needed some expert help in pulling it all together. In a moment of serendipity, she happened upon Davenport Imber’s leave-behind card while picking up flowers at her local floral shop in the neighboring community of Serenbe. Davenport Imber’s sister is the shop’s proprietress. 59

Formal Matters To dress up the dining room, Davenport Imber suggested the addition of built-ins and millwork. The hand-painted velvet drapes are complemented with an elegant mahogany table passed down from the wife’s grandmother. Other heirloom pieces in the space include Georgian sconces and Wedgewood china.

Surface Play A reclaimed oak island takes center stage in the newly redesigned kitchen. Venetian plaster on the hood and sink wall helps add a sense of history to the space. The light pendants are by Bevolo.

“We hit it off right away,” recalls Davenport Imber. Approaching the home with a like-minded vision, they paid respect to the surroundings with wood accents in the form of beams and paneling while also incorporating natural materials such as wool, linen and leather at every turn. “I’d call the home’s aesthetic an elegant take on rustic living,” says the designer. “But there were two things we were always conscious of—dogs and dirt.” To that end, the designer sensibly opted for Peacock Pavers in the main living spaces to withstand muddy paws. Weaving cherished family antiques into the home’s design was also a priority. From the dining room’s Georgian sconces to silverware on display in the kitchen, each piece shares a familial story. “We were keen to make the home look like it had been around for generations, and the heirlooms and antiques we used really enhance this idea,” says Davenport Imber. And while the family has only called it “home” for a short while, the couple hopes it does indeed become a place their children and future generations gather, she notes. “They ultimately came out here for more family time and less distractions, and it’s really a pleasure to continue shaping this home into a backdrop for just that.” See Resources, Back of Book. 62

KNOWN AS THE HEART of the Blue Ridge mountains, the charming village of Cashiers, North Carolina, seemed like an ideal place for an Alabama couple to escape the summer heat. Architect D. Stanley Dixon and interior designer Betty Burgess created their seasonal getaway, a rustic abode with native fieldstone walls perched on an outlook facing Yellow Mountain. “We wanted it to look like it belonged and that it had been there for a long time,” Dixon says. The natural materials have been carried into the light-filled front foyer, where rough-sawn cedar ceiling beams with a lime-washed finish complement the wood flooring and painted shiplap walls. Linen sheers define the entrance to the spacious formal living room, filtering the strong morning sunlight and softening the stone walls. “[The wife] is a very gentle, gracious person, and that same sort of spirit is replicated through the interiors of the house,” Burgess explains. 77

While Burgess worked more closely with the wife on the interior design, there’s plenty for the husband, a wonderful cook and gamesman, to appreciate as well. A custom pewter hood with brass detailing, for example, creates a strong focal point in the kitchen, which is outfitted with leathered granite perimeter counters and a tablelike island with iron legs that’s ideal for meal prep. And located three steps down from the main house, the cozy study features Crab Orchard stone flooring, pine paneled walls and a primitive three-piece stone fireplace mantel. “It comes across as modern and rustic at the same time,” Dixon says. “We wanted something that felt authentic to North Carolina—nothing elaborate or too ornate.” Burgess flipped the script in the master suite, incorporating light linen draperies and an upholstered headboard to create a peaceful, serene space. “It’s important to me that a bedroom be a place to recharge,” Burgess says. Near the window, a casual chair and an elegant marble sculpture on a pedestal add a touch of modernity.

Gather ’Round above Underneath an iron chandelier, an antique table surrounded by slipcovered chairs creates a beautiful spot to break bread in the open living area. opposite A custom mirror by designer Betty Burgess reflects light into the central living room, where a dark sofa and light green chairs surround the rustic fireplace.

Hanging from the beamed ceiling, a chandelier made of twigs and branches adds a natural touch that has attracted nesting birds. A respite from the Alabama heat and a gathering place for family and friends, the house is everything the owners envisioned for their mountain retreat. Indeed, the husband sent Burgess a heartfelt letter to express the couple’s gratitude for her work on the project. “I am incredibly grateful to have worked with these clients that trusted and appreciated me on this entire journey,” Burgess says. “You put your heart and soul into a project like this, and when a client really understands that, there’s no bigger reward.” See Resources, Back of Book. 81

IT WAS A DREAM COME TRUE when a thirtysomething couple with two young daughters bought a shingle-style dwelling in Inman Park that they had long admired. But while they were captivated by the early 20th-century home’s historic character and lush setting, the recently remodeled interior felt a bit too contemporary and counterintuitive to the architecture. After interviewing several interior designers, the couple enlisted Shayelyn Woodbery to help them turn back the hands of time. Her presentation called for a heady mix of upholstered pieces alongside antiques from different eras. Handcrafted woodwork inspired by the home’s original also played a key role. “They wanted it to feel old and grand yet still appropriate for a young family—not too formal or stuffy,” Woodbery says. A custom ornate wood mantel, for example, elevates the existing brick fireplace in the formal living room. Flanked by channel-back banquettes covered in forest green velvet, it’s a beautiful focal point for a custom leather sofa and a pair of upholstered chairs atop an antique rug. “I wanted it to feel like a comfortable old European hotel with lots of different places for people to gather,” Woodbery explains.

Indeed, during large gatherings, guests often spill into the formal dining room, where a pair of tailored host chairs adds contemporary flair to an antique dining table set atop a patterned rug. Silk taffeta drapery and a brass French Art Deco chandelier with a floral motif balance the linear architecture. “It feels a little sexier and more feminine,” Woodbery says. While the kitchen had been beautifully redone with dark green cabinetry and white marble countertops, the designer opted to remove a bank of cabinetry, creating space for a new breakfast area. It is illuminated by a custom metal pendant with a fabric shade that established the nature-inspired palette used throughout the house. While mom cooks, she can keep an eye on her young daughters in the adjacent family room—a cozy spot with four brown textured velvet chairs facing a French armoire reincarnated as a TV cabinet. There’s more seating at the built-in banquette in the adjacent reading nook, which Woodbery clad in wood wainscoting that mimics the woodwork in the front foyer. The owners are overjoyed with the way the interior honors the architecture, and Woodbery is just as pleased with the result. “It has a beautiful, soft energy that they can share with their friends and family,” she says. “We brought the house back to life.” See Resources, Back of Book. 93

LIFE

END NOTE

CONSTRUCTION DIARIES RECENTLY WHILE REVIEWING a home submission, I was interrupted by a call from my contractor announcing “the insulation installer just fell through your ceiling and landed in the guest bedroom closet.” Having been previously engrossed in sight lines and photo angles, it took a moment to register that a man had fallen through the attic. This is not my first renovation rodeo—it’s my eighth and something I swore I’d never do again. The process always takes longer and costs more, no matter how much experience one has in the arena. Simply put: Things happen. Expected changes arise in every renovation when owners upgrade lighting, countertops, backsplashes and appliances. However, projects get thrown out of the saddle when the unexpected happens. Electrical wiring that’s out of code, foundation issues and black mold have haunted many renovators. My most challenging renovation was 25 years ago when I added a second story onto a Brookwood Hills home built in 1921. The beautiful plaster walls were painstakingly recreated after rewiring the entire house, and months of construc100

tion went into adding the second floor. Although the trees had been checked by an arborist, Hurricane Opal proved too much for them and caused one to crash through the house a week after we moved in. I’ve remodeled homes throughout the South—from early 20th-century brick homes to mid-century modern ranches to mountain retreats. Each has turned out beautifully, but I find renovating more complicated than building because trying to remedy an existing problem is always more challenging. Fortunately, the insulation installer is okay, and I’m appreciative that he fell through the closet rather than the living room—though I don’t think he had any choice in the matter. Unfortunately, however, I’ve just gotten another message: The air conditioning compressor has died. Another day, another dollar, another renovation with unexpected turns. Homes are neither inexpensive nor easy to maintain. But these stories make them rich, and to date, a subcontractor landing in my guest bedroom closet is right up there with Opal. Neither will ever be forgotten.
