A RECENT DISCUSSION AT THE AH&L office led to a great debate: email organization. I recognize it’s a bit persnickety, but my Type-A brain couldn’t fathom that some people don’t organize their inbox into alphabetized folders. While most of us probably aren’t passionate about a well-organized inbox, the conversation is relative. And as we begin the holiday season, it had me wondering what others do to keep themselves—and their environments—working in their favor, be that at home, on the job or among peers. Our November issue leans into the theme of a hardworking home—and how it’s achieved by a harder working design team. At the hands of Cindy Kahn and the designers at Architectural Accents, an Atlanta-area

house is unrecognizable after a years-long transformation into something reminiscent of a French chateau (page 32). In Buckhead, Carole Weaks and Spitzmiller & Norris crafted a perfectly tailored, classically detailed dwelling that blends in with the surrounding historic homes (page 50). And with architect Garrett Daniel, designer Kim Majure shares her family’s Lake Burton abode that reflects precious memories from childhood (page 64). Speaking of hardworking, the Home for the Holidays month. In September, the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art recognized the best and brightest in design at the 16th annual PHILIP TRAMMELL SHUTZE AWARDS
HIGHLY COMPETITIVE AND ONE of the region’s most prestigious recognitions, a Philip T. Shutze Award is oftentimes considered the pinnacle of its receiver’s career. Named after Atlanta’s most famous architect, the award honors the brightest Southeastern talents and their commitment to upholding classical design practices. The submission process is not for the faint of heart and is as meticulous as the projects that win, with three industry peers—this year, interior designer Katie Ridder, architect Mac White and landscape architect Fernando Wong—blindly and thoroughly judging each entry. Upon
completion, the season’s swankiest celebration follows with around 300 architects, designers, landscape architects and other industry members dressed in their black-tie best for the awards ceremony party at Atlanta’s Piedmont Driving Club. Designer Madeline Stuart hosted the evening where winners were publicly recognized, architect Norman D. Askins was honored as the 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, and excellence in classical, traditional design was celebrated throughout. Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles was in attendance and is delighted to share the award-winning projects with you.

Brandon Ingram Design South Georgia Quail Plantation, Quitman, Georgia WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “This speaks to all the qualities looked at by the jury—proportion, scale, rhythm and symmetry. The detail is impeccable and carries through from space to space.” WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “With this house being my first major commission, the honor of seeing it recognized with a Shutze Award is even more meaningful. It’s without a doubt one of the most special projects in my portfolio and one I’ll never forget. It’s a perfect example of what a trusting client and a well-orchestrated design team can create.”

WHAT THE JURORS SAY: “This project has a sophisticated palette and clear mastery of detail. The upholstery details are interesting and the fabric combinations are wonderful.” WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “The aim of the interiors was to meet the exterior’s strictly classical architecture with traditional design, as well as balance that with the needs and preferences of a young and modern family. To accomplish that, we curated a mix of classic textiles and antiques that present a fresh feel with an eye to practicality.”

It feels very natural.” WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “I am proud of our team for receiving a Philip Trammell Shutze Award for the inspired design of this house. It was a great exercise in blending Scottish and English architectural styles with local coastal design elements and materials. I am grateful to our clients for allowing our team to execute this special project; the result is an enduring house that suits its location.”

It’s appropriate to its location and takes what were the existing traditional building materials and uses them in an authentic and fresh way.” WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “We were fortunate that the homeowners trusted us to respect the original charm and local character during the renovation of this historic house. The team conducted extensive research on local historic buildings to ensure that the renovation was appropriate for the house and region. I am honored that the ICAA and jury recognized our careful attention to vernacular details.”

Strategically nestled underneath several mature live oak trees, the collaboration between the entire design team resulted in a house with distinctly whimsical, yet timeless architectural elements.”

Adaptive reuse often takes a building and finds new uses that will retain its viability. In the case of this project, it’s the rare example of a building returning to its original purpose. We’ve witnessed the magic of this building becoming young again!”

This feels like a good mix that is graphic and fresh, yet still nods to the history of the house.” WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “It is an incredible honor to receive two awards from the ICAA—an organization dedicated to the work and people I respect so greatly. And to win for these specific projects is especially meaningful, since both of these homes were created for special, longtime clients in two cities that are near and dear to me—Atlanta and Charleston.”

We have been fortunate to work with gracious, well-traveled and stylish homeowners who trust our vision for their homes and lives. We also couldn’t do what we do without our talented collaborators—the architects, landscape designers and craftspeople who help make our creative imaginings possible.” 19

The design team had the presence of mind to add back the significant architectural features that were stripped away and had extreme sensitivity in the addition as well.” WORDS FROM THE WINNER: “What made this honor all the more special was that Philip Shutze himself served as a draftsman on the original design of this Neel Reid home, and many of the details found throughout are attributable directly to him. Conserving the Past Written and Produced by LORI JOHNSTON
The ATLANTA ARCHITECTURAL CONSERVATION SOCIETY has emerged to celebrate and stand for the “thoughtful renovation of Atlanta’s old homes” with architects, contractors, interior designers and historic preservationists involved, says founder and designer BRITTANY FORSLING. Some people turned to the society’s Instagram feed (@atlantaconservationsociety) to react after the historic Whispering Pines mansion on West Paces Ferry Road was torn down. Forsling discussed historic homes and the society, which is becoming a 501(c)(3). Q: What are your concerns about protections for historic homes in Atlanta? A: My main concern is the lack of protections in place. It’s mind-boggling that the Buckhead area and many others have zero legislation regarding the protection of older homes. On the flip side, I’ve witnessed firsthand how protections can make
Summerhill’s SCENE Downtown Atlanta’s SUMMERHILL neighborhood continues to add commercial and residential offerings. The 80-acre mixed-use project by CARTER, in partnership with K. well-meaning renovations difficult beyond necessity. We’d like to establish a middle ground that encourages, instead of inhibits, saving these homes. Q: Can you describe the society and who is involved? A: The society was created to bring like-minded people together to connect over our love of historical architecture, to educate and encourage those who wish to take on the challenges of renovations, and provide resources that make those renovations not so painful. We are working on establishing a fund to purchase these homes ourselves should a developer be the only offer the homeowner receives. Q: What could the reaction to Whispering Pines mean for the future of historic homes in Atlanta? A: While incredibly sad and a loss we will feel forever, good can come from it. The citizens of Atlanta can use this as an opportunity to save the city from further destruction. We hope to have a heavy hand in that. Coming in first quarter 2023 to Georgia Avenue are Southern National, the acclaimed eatery that chef Duane Nutter and restaurateur Reggie Washington are relocating from Mobile, Alabama; Press Start, an arcade and Asian tapas concept from restaurateur Richard Tang with a rooftop; and Redacted, a basement drink parlor. Summerhill’s retail and restaurant hub is fully leased with options from morning coffee to late-night cocktails, says CATHRYN HOUCHINS, senior director of marketing for Carter. “Tenants have latched onto the idea of being a main street,” she says. To increase connectivity, MARTA’s Summerhill bus rapid transit line is expected to start construction next year with a $91 million-plus price tag. Hedgewood Homes has a 100-townhome community on Hank Aaron Drive, and Trammell Crow Residential’s Alexan Summerhill apartments will have 315 units. Across from 565 Hank by Windsor, Carter is developing 356 apartments and 6,800 square feet of retail. The design aims to tie into Georgia Avenue’s character.

Naomi Von Habersham I’VE CONCLUDED THAT TRYING to keep up with what’s new in today’s world is a losing battle. Every day, it seems that there is some new technology, app or device being introduced that is supposed to enhance my life by making it less complicated, when in fact, they make my life more complicated by being introduced in the first place. The same goes for keeping current with trends, which now tend to burn bright for such brief periods of time that if you blink, you will have missed it. Believe me, I’ve tried, but I just can’t seem to keep track of what’s hot and what’s not, which might be why when faced with making even the most mundane decisions, I stick to what I know is never out of fashion: tried-and-true classics. Whether it’s a fabric, cocktail or movie, a classic has stood the test of time, meaning that no matter the situation, it is almost always a winning choice. True, not everyone agrees. There are those who equate classic with boring, or, even worse, dated, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Need proof? Consider that most classic of cocktails, the martini. How can there be anything boring about a martini, especially when you’ve had two? And while we’re on the subject of martinis, if you want classic wit, try reading Dorothy Parker, preferably with a martini in hand. If you haven’t a clue to whom I’m referring or why I mention her alongside martinis, Google her—better yet, pick up an anthology of her short stories, which remain as fizzy as a glass of champagne, despite the fact that some were written close to a century ago. See what I mean about classics never being dated? Of course, branching out and trying new things can also be rewarding. If I hadn’t done so, I would never have known that Wordle can be almost as satisfying as completing a classic crossword puzzle. But as exciting as newness and innovation may be, the masterpieces of yesteryear can be every bit as thrilling.

COMPLETE WITH CHIC AND art-forward interiors, The Americano sets a new standard for fine dining. Located inside the InterContinental Buckhead Atlanta hotel, the city was an obvious choice for celebrity Chef Scott Conant when it came to selecting the second locale for his inspired Italian steakhouse dining concept. “Atlanta is known for its vibrant culture and booming culinary scene, so choosing it as the next home for The Americano was a no-brainer,” says Conant. “With the neighborhood as a major hub for both business and tourism, we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to provide an unparalleled dining experience for the city’s locals and visitors alike.” From delectable pastas to main courses from both land and sea, there is no shortage of cuisine options. The Focaccia Ripiena—stuffed with stracchino cheese, potato and pesto—is the perfect starter for the table as everyone peruses the dinner menu. Described by Conant as an “Italian-inspired steakhouse with a soulful menu of fine-aged steaks, house-made pasta, Italian antipasti and Mediterranean seafood,” The Americano, complete with a carefully curated lunch menu as well, is a must-try this season. At the bar, the cocktails—and their focus on fresh ingredients—have quickly become a fan favorite. Think bright and punchy sips like the “Drunken Wifey” made with tequila, limoncello, elderflower and Italian herbs. “The drinks are meant to make our guests curious and inspired to try them all, be it the glassware, garnishes or presentation,” says general manager Aaron Burkes. This season, guests can look forward to the fall-inspired cocktail “Them Apples” made with apple-and-brown butter-infused vodka. Inside, KTGY Simeone Deary Design Group drew inspiration from the original Scottsdale, Arizona, location and transformed the restaurant into a “sophisticated, moody atmosphere that complements the elevated ambience of Buckhead,” says Conant. The dark walls with pops of green accentuate the curvaceous chandeliers floating overhead, as well as the exclusive pieces of art showcased throughout. And thanks to the dining experience as a whole, it’s likely the restaurant will end up in your regular restaurant rotation this season. “The best reaction I’ve had from customers over the years is when they make another reservation on their way out,” says Conant. “That’s a real indication we created something truly special.”

IT WAS THE PROJECT OF A lifetime for designer Cindy Kahn, who helped her longtime clients transform their relatively modest Atlanta-area home into something akin to a French chateau. “This project was a labor of love,” she says, noting the result elevates the lush 12-acre lakefront property. “I lived and breathed it.” Architectural designers Charles Nevinson, Maria Williamson and Andrew Albarez of Architectural Accents, along with builder Kathy Gregorcyk and landscape designer Greg Arnold, were equally committed to the multiyear project, dramatically reconfiguring the layout and designing a neighboring structure clad with Fond du Lac stone that resembles a 14th-century

farm granary. Detailed with stucco and weathered timber, the existing home looks like it might be a 17th-century addition. A two-story structure with a steel facade that’s evocative of a Parisian storefront connects the two structures. “I decided to tell a story of different periods in French architecture,” says Nevinson. The owner of salvage shop Architectural Accents, Nevinson took a similarly historical approach to the reconfigured interior, incorporating finely crafted wooden paneling, antique fireplace mantels and plank, parquet and stone flooring. “You’d be hard-pressed to know what’s old and what’s new, which is what I strive to achieve,” he explains. That ethos also informed Kahn, who scoured European antiques shops and flea markets for rarified pieces that would live up to the architecture. An ornate pedestal she picked up at the Paris Flea Market,

for example, stands next to the hand-carved stairway railing in the granary’s entryway, which has rustic stone flooring accented by a Turkish area rug. An iron bench with a cowhide-upholstered seat adds a modern flair that perfectly complements the time-worn antiques. That mix also enlivens the family room, where iron chandeliers illuminate a pair of plush sofas and 1920s French high-back chairs covered in a blue-and-white ikat fabric that plays off both the contemporary area rug and antique pottery. “It was a real balance, but it feels fresh and alive,” she says.
The sprawling dwelling also includes an Art Deco-inspired space to enjoy music, a drawing room, a wood-panel library and a lavishly decorated dining room with reclaimed painted wall paneling. Kahn is quick to credit the architectural design team, Gregorcyk and Arnold, who spent untold hours making sure every detail was rendered to perfection. “This is the pinnacle for me,” she says, noting that completing the years-long project was bittersweet. “It felt like letting go of a child when they go to college.” See Resources, Back of Book.

FAMILIARITY HAS BRED contentedness for architects Rick Spitzmiller and Robert Norris and interior designer Carole Weaks, who have collaborated on many notable projects over the years. That sense of camaraderie came into play when they recently reunited to help longtime clients create their dream home in Garden Hills. Detailed with linear shiplap-clad bay windows, arches and star-shape cutouts, the brick abode blends in seamlessly with the historic enclave’s traditional houses. “It’s inspired by the Arts and Crafts Movement,” says Spitzmiller. “The brick detailing evokes hands-on work by skilled craftsmen.” That attention to detail also defines the interior, which includes substantial moldings and mantels, custom handcrafted cabinetry and an abundance of windows on all sides. “The quality of light is not typical for infill lots in established neighborhoods,” explains Spitzmiller. INTERIOR DESIGNER KIM MAJURE vividly remembers the allure of her grandmother’s Jersey Shore beach cottage. “She had this quaint old house, and I have such nostalgic memories of it,” she says. “It had all these nooks and crannies, and as a little kid it felt so magical.” Those feelings stayed with Majure as she and husband Patrick searched for
their own waterfront getaway on Lake Burton in North Georgia, where their family had been vacationing for years. “Lake Burton feels as though you’ve been transported to a distant, remote locale, yet it’s only a short drive from home,” says Majure. While they agreed on location, the couple had different notions about the home itself. “I longed for an old and

vintage cabin while Patrick wanted the low maintenance and reliability of new plumbing and electrical,” says Majure. After property-hunting for five years, they found a “unicorn”—a gently sloping lot on a deep cove lapped by cobalt waters, dotted with mature hardwoods and blue hydrangeas, with a front row to sweeping views. With architect Garrett Daniel of Garrett Daniel Architecture in Atlanta, the couple set to work on designing a new home that felt like it had been on the lake for decades. The team studied images of old area cabins and hotels to stay true to the historic
architecture and building materials. “We would often have my drawings laid out on Kim’s big design table, four or five books open at one time, photos and trace-paper sketches,” says Daniel of the deliberate and collaborative process. Majure imagined tucked-away nooks to cozy up in after a day on the water, materials that felt rugged but not overly rustic and a sense of comfort and welcome throughout. Design choices were made to evoke the idea of a small cabin that was added on to over the years. In the foyer and upstairs hall, the fireplace is exposed as though it was once an exterior wall. A mix of antiques, hand-me-downs and new objects make for interiors that feel personal and balanced. “My young nephew recently came to visit and was delighted to run around discovering ‘secret’ rooms,” says Majure. “It was exactly the feeling I’d had at my grandmother’s old cottage— where the closet under the stairs became my own secret world—just the emotion I hoped to evoke in our new ‘old’ home.” See Resources, Back of Book.

patterns are more than just mere zigzags. The iconic motif can suit any number of spaces—it can be bold and powerful or more subtle and subdued. Even in a room full of plain and solid fabrics, the addition of just a few throw pillows with a chevron design can be enough to energize a space without becoming overwhelming. In silk and velvet fabrics, chevron designs become more formal; in linens and lighter weaves, they become more casual and relaxed. It’s that sort of versatility that makes the timeless pattern so popular. —Clinton Smith

a bout the showhouse HARRISON DESIGN AND KBD CONSTRUCTION’S contemporary take on an English estate serves as the 2022 Home for the Holidays Designer Showhouse & Marketplace in the heart of Buckhead. The 14th annual showhouse, situated on one acre with a finished basement, is the second collaboration between the respected architecture firm and developer for an Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles signature event. With more than 10,500 square feet, the home features five bedrooms, six full baths and three half baths on three levels. The design is modeled after the style of English architect C.F.A. (Charles Francis Annesley) Voysey from the late 1890s and early 1900s with details such as oversized arches, generous gables and swooping pitches. The home’s free-flowing design casts a romantic air and lets in light through expected and unexpected choices. A stucco exterior and simplified interior trim present timeless, clean-lined design. Traditional fittings blend with updated finishes, such as solid French white oak flooring, custom cabinets by Kingdom Woodworks, Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances, and O’Neil Ruppel plumbing fixtures through Renaissance Tile & Bath. An emphasis on daylight is evident in its abundant windows and doors, as well as signature features. A barrel vault ceiling spans from the keeping room to the loggia and the fireside covered porch to create connectivity and a sense of airiness. The spaces were designed for easy flow and pool views as Atlantans recognize the importance of backyards and oasis-like getaways at home. In the
8 AtlantaHolidayHome.com
open kitchen, an arched window behind the stove serves as a way for homeowners to soak up the light and views as the seasons change. The openness of those spaces contrasts with the privacy of other areas, such as the fireside living room and library. Upon entering the home, guests find the dining room situated off the foyer, which then flows to the kitchen and its accompanying scullery and pantry for functionality and storage. On the other side of the foyer, a floating staircase leads to the second floor, where the hallway’s long spine—reminiscent of the design team’s previous showhouse collaboration—links the ensuite bedrooms and creates vestibules for artwork. The main level features a substantial primary suite where a groin vault ceiling in the bathroom plays off the arched window in the shower, maximizing the sunlight. The suite’s design accommodates hers and his water closets and walk-in closets. For the utmost in access, amenities include an elevator. With guests in mind, the home includes a suite with a vaulted ceiling above the two-car garage. A mudroom is ready to serve homeowners and guests maneuvering in and out of the residence’s porte cochere, motor court and pool. KBD Development & Construction partnered with Floralis Garden Design for the landscape architecture and Lauren Davenport Imber of Davenport Designs Ltd. for the interior specifications. The showhouse features the talents of the Southeast’s top interior designers for a multi-generational holiday tradition. —Lori Johnston

generation owners, taking the helm more than 10 years ago. The decision was made to shift from making game tables to creating pieces that will become part of the design of the space, not just sit in it. Each new model designed since 2011 has focused on style trends within the furniture industry, classic architectural design

As the design director, Elizabeth oversees every aspect and creation of each table model, focusing on fit and finish to maximize the design of each new piece. Venture Games’ end goal is to evolve the game room from a space with little design and forethought to a mainstay in the design process. The driving force is to create spaces that bring people together and create opportunities for real and meaningful connection through play.
