COINED THE “CITY IN THE FOREST” and replete with historic houses and sprawling green spaces, Atlanta is home to many renowned architects, designers, and creatives. And for one night a year, the city’s top industry professionals gather to recognize the region’s best and brightest at the most anticipated awards ceremony of the season, the Philip T. Shutze Awards. Named after famed Atlanta architect Philip Trammell Shutze, the prestigious award honors the talented architects, designers, landscape architects, and other design experts who are committed to
preserving and upholding classical design. With a highly competitive submission process, the winners were anonymously selected by this year’s jurors interior designer Courtney Coleman, landscape architect Melissa Reavis, and architect Tim Barber. Following deliberation, the elegant soirée was held at the Piedmont Driving Club in October with nearly 300 industry professionals dressed in black-tie and gathered to celebrate the multitalented winners. Naomi Von Habersham A FEW FRIENDS AND I were recently discussing how no matter where we live or how many times we might move, there are some design traditions that stay with us. One friend has had four different homes over the past 20 years, but in all of them he has made sure to have a black-and-white checkerboard floor in his kitchen. Another friend has a thing for leopard-print carpet. Because of work, she has lived in New York City, Seattle, and now Atlanta. Although the style of her homes has varied throughout her career, the one thing they have had in common is leopard-print carpet in at least one room. For me, it’s patterned wallpaper. Over the years, I have moved from a condo to a house and then back to a condo, and in all of them, patterned wallpaper has been a constant. I’ve had chinoiserie prints, star patterns, and trompe l’oeil designs, not to mention a good-looking gray and black geometric paper that I once used in a powder room. It seems that my friends and I are in good company, because all the legendary decorators had their own design traditions. An Albert Hadley interior wasn’t an Albert Hadley interior without a note of black or a splash of red somewhere in the room. Like my friend, Madeleine Castaing was also a devotee of leopard print, so much so that she enveloped Jean Cocteau’s study in it. (Castaing also had major affection for tented rooms, but that’s a story for another day.) Michael Taylor was drawn to potted trees the way I am to wallpaper. Look at his later work, and you’ll nary see a room without a ficus or some other tree. And Mario Buatta? Where do I begin? Floral chintzes, dog paintings hung with bows, and blueand-white porcelains. Needlepoint rugs, needlepoint pillows, and English antique furniture. Was there a traditional furnishing that Mario didn’t love? Although trying out new design elements is to be encouraged, so is maintaining one’s traditions. Without them, our homes just wouldn’t feel like home. 39

A NEW VIRGINIA-HIGHLAND EATERY proves change can be a good thing after all. At La Moon, experience a melody of traditional Asian flavors from Thailand and Vietnam to Japan, with a touch of French influence. No stranger to running successful Atlanta hot spots, industry veteran Bell Chabchit co-operates Tiki Thai on Howell Mill Road. With this beloved Atlanta venture to dot his resume, it’s no wonder that owners of Mai Kitchen approached Chabchit to ask for help transforming their struggling restaurant into a fresh, successful concept. Partnering with the owners and taking over Mai Thai’s previous location, La Moon is Virginia-Highland’s new not-sohidden gem. Situated on the main drag and featuring large windows that open up to the street for alfresco dining, the new neighbor is in the heart of it all. “What I like about the area is its unique culture of people,” says Chabchit. “We fit in and mix well in that environment.” Rooted in history, the restaurant reflects on a time when France occupied Asian land resulting in French influence 40

found in their culture and food. Inside, a wall of red-painted brick—reminiscent of French-style homes in old towns of Thailand and Vietnam—spans the length of the space, and a meticulously hand-painted mural by the bar depicts a Vietnamese scene with merchant ships arriving at port, trading foreign goods. Continuing the historical narrative, retro French and Asian photographs create lively gallery walls. Deep reds and golds threaded throughout offer a bold atmosphere mirrored in the daring menu chock-full of beloved Asian dishes with surprising twists. Inspired to pursue a career in the culinary field by the women in his family—including his sister and mother, who operate a restaurant in London— Chabchit incorporates memorable dishes from his childhood like the Shrimp Cray Pot with glass noodles, Gulf shrimp, and pork belly. And the Pad Thai is a musttry, featuring a secret sauce straight from Thailand. “My aunt used to own a restaurant in Bangkok, and I asked her

CREATING ARTFUL INTERIORS is second nature for designer Beth Webb. With an early career as an art consultant, she has a keen eye for form and balance that guides the spaces she composes today. And like revisiting a favorite painting with a fresh perspective, Webb revels in returning to past projects. In the case of one Buckhead grande dame, she has had three separate opportunities across a 20-year span to work her magic. The current inhabitants purchased the property as a second home to be close to their grandchildren. “A few weeks before I got the call from them, I was riding around looking for that smaller house that’s perfect for empty nesters, which has become an anomaly here in Atlanta,” says Webb. Though it wasn’t on the market, Webb highlighted the home to her husband as they passed. “It is fabulous, has incredible bones, and lives so well,” she told him. Webb’s history with the home included not only design work, but friendships with former homeowners and a housekeeper she hired after spying the immaculately tidy fridge.

T
THERE’S A FINE LINE when creating a home that’s on trend but not trendy. A space outfitted with modern comforts and current styles, but that won’t be a glaringly obvious nod to old fads in a decade’s time. Andy and Shawnee Feinour’s new build in Sherwood Forest manages to toe that fine line, and beautifully so. The traditional exterior, with a blend of mid-Atlantic and country architectural influences, gives way to an interior with soothing neutrals and functional spaces designed to be lived in. “It’s a ‘today’ house,” says architect Norman Askins. “It’s a real house, for real people.” Askins and project architects Brent Mooneyham and Pan Moreau, together with designer Susan Bozeman and landscape architect Jonathan Bussell, worked to create a home that gave the Feinours the distinct spaces they each needed, balanced by airy space in between for entertaining and relaxing. With five bedrooms, two office spaces, a three-car garage, a covered porch, and a lap pool, Askins maximized every inch of the lush city lot. Shawnee, a builder by trade, was heavily involved in all aspects of the process, adding a welcome additional voice of creativity and ideation to the team. ABOUT the Showhouse THIS YEAR’S HOLIDAY SHOWHOUSE celebrates the past and present with a faithful redesign of the Buckhead home where legendary golfer Bobby Jones conceptualized The Masters. FIRELIGHT HOMES and TISH MILLS INTERIORS, in collaboration with KIRK DESIGN, updated the storied residence. As the story goes, the Atlanta landmark was gifted to Jones by the City of Atlanta after the golfer earned the Grand Slam in the 1930s. It was here that he collaborated on the design for Augusta National Golf Course and then founded the concept of the Masters, making it a significant project for today’s times. The classic Colonial home feels connected to the 1930s, by revitalizing legendary rooms—such as Jones’ study—and using exterior materials similar to its earlier years, with a new wing and amenities that surprise and provide a robust setting for modern lifestyles. The 7,500-square-foot residence will enthrall showhouse guests with not-to-be-missed moments both inside and out, from the new brick facade and front terrace to the pool and pool house. A sweeping driveway and mature trees lead to a graceful motor court with a three-car garage and landscaping by FLORALIS GARDEN DESIGN. A new front door facing Tuxedo Road serves as the main entrance. With careful attention to the past, the original front door facing Northside Drive is being restored and 12

positioned as a back door leading to aquatic amenities and gardens (keep an eye out for nods to Augusta National). Openness prevails in the reimagined floor plan that includes a two-story grand hall and new entertaining spaces, such as a family room with a fireplace and coffered ceiling and a kitchen with a hidden scullery. The design-build team reshaped the flow while maintaining the symmetry of the living room, dining room, and historic paneled study. Surprises, such as a sexy speakeasy, infuse the redesigned property with intrigue. As part of the expansive primary suite on the first level, a spa-like bathroom dazzles with an exquisite use of steel, glass, and tilework. Throughout the home, luxurious finishes, including marble, limestone, and porcelain slab, present a play of masculine and feminine with a fresh take on the classics. An additional four bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, as well as an additional laundry area, are on the second floor. The lower level is a haven for hobbies and activity with a theater, game room, gym, and wine cellar. With the design-build team capturing the magic of existing rooms and giving the property new life with in-demand spaces and amenities, and the Southeast’s top interior designers displaying their talents, the refashioned Buckhead home is poised to be a showhouse hole-in-one. —Lori Johnston
