THERE’S SOMETHING SPECIAL about the endless possibilities that come with a new-build home. Case in point is the showstopping kitchen in this newly constructed Buckhead house brought to life by Linda MacArthur Architect, Benecki Homes, Source and Karpaty Cabinets. When it came to the design, the team set out to craft a chic yet practical space tailor-made for the homeowners, a young family who loves homecooked meals just as much as they do a clean aesthetic. To keep clutter at bay, custom cabinetry by Karpaty Cabinets lines the walls, providing plenty of storage and cleverly concealing a hidden pantry. Pop-up outlets on the Calacatta Vagli marble countertops and hidden speakers in the ceiling further the seamless and connected effect. Perhaps the star of the show: an impressive triple barrel tiled ceiling, which was implemented to

complement the length of the room. Handmade Spanish ceramic tile on both the walls and ceiling ensconces the kitchen in a graceful sense of texture. “The handmade imperfections of the tile allow the light to glint and sparkle, adding a luxurious element to the space,” says Brittany Stafford of Source. Natural light was also an important design feature to include. “Benecki [Homes] believes in implementing light into a room from more than one direction for shadow reduction and overall aesthetics,” says Cydney Mitchell of Source. Oval windows were included not only on the ceiling, but also above the doorways leading into the adjacent living room, allowing light from the kitchen to filter throughout the main floor. “Source, Karpaty [Cabinets] and Benecki Homes have a long history of collaborating, and we thoroughly enjoy the artistic process—and the challenges that come with—of continually pushing the design boundaries,” says Stafford. “Each team not only brings an artistic vision with an emphasis on innovation, but also a strong commitment to quality and execution.”

THERE’S A DELICATE BALANCE when trying to create spaces with contemporary elements while retaining warmth and soul. If the needle moves too far in one direction, the room can feel cold or stark. But at the most recent Luxury Living Show at Phipps Plaza, Acworth-based Morgan Creek Cabinetry created a stylish kitchen that artfully melded classic characteristics with a pareddown approach in keeping with today’s less-is-more lifestyles. “Our inspiration for the design was to be clean, simple and straightforward,” says Ryan DeCesaro, owner and longtime designer at Morgan Creek Cabinetry. “We took more traditional elements and brought them into modern times.” A straightforward approach didn’t mean sacrificing style; in fact, myriad design details are interspersed throughout the space. “We started with the island, which creates a striking impression,” says DeCesaro of one of the room’s key focal points. A history of furniture-making is part of Morgan Creek’s 35-plusyear history, and the English brown oak base is a nod to those time-honored traditions. With a clear varnish, the finish mimics wood in its raw state. The repetition of deep undercounter drawers and custom hardware adds a graphic sensibility. The drawers also allow for more storage, which DeCesaro says clients are requesting. Brass accents appear again on upper and lower cabinets that are painted in Benjamin Moore’s Black Pepper, as well as on the kitchen faucet. The contrast between the wood and painted finishes creates a striking, eye-catching combination that’s decidedly 21st century. “There’s not one thing that overpowers the other,” says DeCesaro of the room’s details. “They all complement each other.” 53

THIS PAST FALL, MIDTOWN’S BRAND-NEW lodging locale the Kimpton Shane Hotel by Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants made its debut to Atlanta’s hospitality scene. Alongside art-inspired guest rooms, the hotel also offers a culinary retreat through their restaurant Hartley Kitchen and Cocktails and mezzanine cocktail lounge, Aveline. “I want our guests to feel at home,” says executive chef Mark Alba. “Courteous and gracious hospitality is a huge focus at Kimpton Hotels—from restaurants and bars to all the other departments.” Alba describes the dishes at Hartley as a nod to traditional Southern cuisine with modern enhancements and presentations. “The use of regional, organic and sustainable ingredients makes positive impacts on the plate with powerful flavors,” says Alba. Starting with breakfast, guests will take pleasure in an array of options from fresh baked buttermilk biscuits to the classic and hearty Hartley breakfast—complete with two farm eggs any style, bacon or sausage, toast, and a choice of grits, breakfast potatoes or fruit. For dinner, think palatable menu items like Sweet Tea Brined & Roasted Chicken, Cornmeal Fried Catfish or Sweet Potato Agnolotti. “Breads and pastries that are baked daily, handmade pastas, desserts that are made in-house, fresh out-of-the-ocean seafood, dry-aged and brined meats, gently prepared vegetables—there is so much care that goes into each ingredient on the plate,” says Alba on his curated breakfast, brunch and dinner menus. Just in front of the main dining room, a staircase leads you upstairs to the separate cocktail bar, Aveline. Compared to its dining counterpart, “Aveline 64

has a more botanically focused cocktail menu with twists on tiki-style drinks,” says Stephanie BloinkAdams, general manager of both concepts. “Hartley is like coming home, while Aveline is more intriguing. Our guests feel welcomed and cared for at each locale, and our service in both spaces is attentive yet unpretentious.” With support from Kimpton’s design team, Studio 11 Design transformed Hartley and Aveline into two distinct areas that effortlessly complement each other. Curvaceous walls and ceiling details add interest to the sophisticated design, and leather chairs and booths act as perfect resting places to enjoy unique dishes and drinks amid good company. Just outside of Aveline, a chic patio lures guests to mingle around the firepits on chilly Atlanta evenings. Says Alba as a final note, “Great food takes respect, time and dedication. As a counterbalance to the soaring ceilings and limestone walls in the living room, designer Lorraine Enwright incorporated a pair of curvaceous sofas that surround a quartet of round cocktail tables. “[The homeowner] said it feels like a warm hug,” says Enwright. “We design in a way that speaks to people’s hearts.” Indeed, the designer paired two horse head-shaped concrete pedestals the homeowner had purchased in Mexico with a live-edge oak top to create a desk. On the opposite side of the room, she suspended an oil painting by chains from the steel drapery rod. “We created vignettes that would bring interest into the space,” says Enwright. Involved from the beginning, the homeowner is overjoyed with the result, purchasing nearly every stitch of furniture and many of the accessories, which include custom artwork, crystal table lamps and throw pillows with a bark pattern that brings the outside in. “The space has such a warm feeling,” says Enwright. “It’s really a destination spot.” 71

Located in the Fieldstone neighborhood of the Club at High Hampton in North Carolina, this newly built house by Dillard-Jones was tailor-made for a modern family wishing to relax and enjoy Cashiers’ forested splendor from the comfort of a beautifully appointed home. On its exterior, a combination of traditional boardand-batten siding and stonework gives the house the look of a classic mountain getaway, while indoors, wooden ceiling beams and stone fireplaces also provide a woodsy point of view. Outdoor living spaces include a spacious back patio as well as a screened-in solarium, giving the homeowners and their guests the opportunity to enjoy nature in any kind of weather. In addition to having four bedrooms and four and a half baths, the house also boasts a great room, loft, home office and plenty of windows for one’s viewing pleasure. A cozy space thanks in part to the presence of rough-hewn wood ceiling beams and an inviting stone-clad fireplace, the great room was also made to feel open to the connecting outdoor patio, which is easily seen and accessed through a wall of glass doors. “I chose low furniture to allow the eye to flow through the room and absorb the outdoor dining area and patio as a continuous space,” says Holly Laughridge, whose choice of streamlined upholstered slipper chairs and sectional sofa offers guests the opportunity to relax by the fire. Framed botanicals and a rustic iron chandelier lend a mountain vibe to the space. The designer’s favorite pieces, however, are a pair of carved 19th-century mirrors, one of which is positioned next to another prominent feature of the room: a built-in bar that is filled with an enticing array of decanters and glassware.
