DESIGNER THERESA ORY and her family moved into their home four years ago, but it wasn’t until the world came to a halt in March 2020 that she gave thought to transforming this personal space. “All of a sudden there were no more job site visits or showroom appointments. Work became really quiet, but that in turn allowed me the time to dream about the possibilities of my own home,” says Ory. As an avid cook and host, the kitchen’s existing layout often left her feeling stifled. So once renovations commenced later that year, the first order of business was to remove a divisional wall and awkward peninsula, instantly improving flow, a hallmark of Ory’s design principles. “Good flow is critical,” says the designer. “It’s like the backstage crew of design. It’s not the thing you see or understand while you’re experiencing it, but you can feel it.” The layout now features a large island and an adjacent lounge area that Ory playfully dubs the “coffee and conversation corner.” Notably absent is a table. “I’ve always had a dream to have a house with a giant island and no table at all,” says Ory. “You can try to create this formal space but mostly people are going to end up loitering around an island, so for me, following that natural pattern and building it to suit where comfort naturally leans toward allows for you to fully enjoy the space.” The island is also the best spot to enjoy the sculptural beauty of the range wall, featuring an oversize bell-curve hood made of plaster; its graceful lines continuing with a light green quartzite backsplash. And Ory’s decision to forgo upper cabinets here allows the wall “to have its moment without any distractions,” she says. “Ultimately, I wanted the kitchen to be a warm and hospitable backdrop for shared moments, while also having my creative voice.”

With lush greenery as the scenic backdrop for the Serenbe showhouse’s two-level patio, designers Patrick and Meghan Sharp, in partnership with Universal Furniture, selected a chic black and white palette that’s also congruent with the living and dining areas that open onto it. “We didn’t want to combat nature with a strong color point of view,” says Patrick. Just outside the dining room, a quartet of white upholstered chairs surrounds a cane coffee table, creating a convivial spot for drinks and after-dinner rendezvous. Located steps away and defined by sculptural topiaries, curvaceous woven chairs juxtapose the crisp white tablecloth, which is decorated with a mix of refined and organic elements, such as woven place mats and bamboo cutlery. NATURAL HIGH DESIGN-BUILD
SERENBE PLANNING + DESIGN, SOUTH HAVEN BUILDERS, FLORALIS GARDEN DESIGN Moved by the forested surrounding and natural topography, architect Steve Dray designed a decidedly modern home clad with dark stucco and cedar treated with a durable, sustainable finish known as shou sugi ban. “The house is not overbearing, and I think it relates to everybody’s sensibilities, whether you like traditional or modern,” he says. Nearly every space in the multilevel abode, which was built by South Haven Builders, offers treetop views, and many have a direct connection with the landscape, for example, the covered multilevel terrace outside the living and dining areas. While protected from the elements, “It feels like you’re outside and not sheltered too much,” says Dray, pointing to its nearly 15-foot ceiling. Creating a pleasing juxtaposition to the modern architecture, landscape architect Lucinda Bray used boulders dug up during construction to create a rustic retaining wall alongside a meandering white Hartstone path and a linear rusted-steel water feature. “I love the way the clean lines blend into this natural, organic landscape,” she says. “It’s a special house.” WINDOWS Windsor Windows & Doors WATER FEATURE DESIGN Floralis Garden Design LANDSCAPE INSTALLATION AND IRRIGATION Coggin, Inc. Faced with a lack of walls for the spacious, light-filled open living room, interior designer Jeffrey Bruce Baker decided against a traditional layout, instead creating a sort of sculpture garden filled with head-turning furnishings and vibrant artwork. “It’s like creating a painting,” he says. Resembling mosaics created from flower petals, oil paintings by Guy Robinson cover two walls in the front entrance, referencing the lush exterior in a whimsical way. LIVING ROOM CHRISTY DILLARD KRATZER, CDK INTERIOR DESIGN At first glance, the living room’s woodpaneled walls might imply the kind of traditional mountain decor that sometimes goes with it, but the stylish mix of furnishings seen here quickly dispels that notion. Unique for this house, designer Christy Dillard Kratzer opted for a deep brown wall color, Sherwin-Williams Black Fox, a cozy choice which also gives the modestly sized space an even greater sense of intimacy. At the same time, the room’s high ceiling, numerous windows and open floor plan create “a wonderful lofty feeling,” says Dillard Kratzer. Because the living room is open to the adjacent kitchen, the designer connected both spaces, and the outdoors as well, by working with an earthy color palette accented with green. Texture, most notably in the form of a pair of wood and metal armchairs covered in hair on hide and a woven coffee table, brings added warmth to a space already swathed in it, courtesy of the inviting stone fireplace. Reminiscent of a traditional farmhouse or a European cottage kitchen, the heart of this home is appointed in an array of old-world finishes that have been modernized for today’s tastes and lifestyles. Open shelving alludes to the past, as do the wide-plank European oak flooring and tongue-and-groove paneling. For contrast to the Shaker-style cabinetry, painted a fresh shade of jade green, designer Christy Dillard Kratzer introduced contemporary-looking dark countertops and a dark gray farmhouse sink. One of the room’s most unique design elements is the backsplash behind the range—inspired by a star-pattern quilt, the designer replicated the motif using black, gray and white cement tiles. “The pattern is a nod to a country appeal, while also feeling modern because of the color combination.” The kitchen may be small, but don’t let its size fool you.
