DESIGNER WHITNEY DURHAM’s penchant for historic dwellings led her and husband Nathan to a grand 1930s home nestled on over 3 private acres in Buckhead’s Tuxedo Park. While their previous cottage was big on charm, it lacked the space for their two growing boys and two energetic labs. “The cherry on top was this house had undergone a renovation by Norman Askins in the 1990s,” says Durham, noting her appreciation for the revered Atlanta architect. Askins’ significant yet mindful transformation included the addition of a family room, larger kitchen, primary bedroom, and central hallway to better align with the needs of modern living, while still preserving original details such as intricate millwork, multiple fireplaces, and even a dumbwaiter. It was a promising canvas for Durham’s unique vision for the home: Instead of letting the formal architecture dictate a similar type of interior decoration, she juxtaposed it with her fearless and elegant sense of style. It’s a risk that pays off, evident immediately upon entering the home’s foyer, which Durham enveloped in an eye-catching Schumacher wallpaper she’d been eager to use. “It looks like a gallery wall of traditionally framed oil 55

M MICHELLE DOUGHTIE OF Schilling & Co. was hired for this Buckhead home’s initial facelift in 2018, which saw the first design of the five-bedroom, nearly 9,000-squarefoot home emphasized with feminine touches against a traditional background. When Doughtie was tapped again in 2024 for the most recent refresh, it was time to layer in collections and up the pattern ante. The homeowner’s recent trip to the Cotswolds left her enamored by castles and the villages surrounding them, and with a series of guests coming into town, she wanted to make her vision a reality. Doughtie’s result is a timeless setting steeped in deep greens and punctuated with playful trims where an heirloom oil collection is married with vibrant contemporary art. In the family room, Doughtie created a cozy atmosphere with intimate seating arrangements surrounded by the homeowners’ impressive inherited art. “With those dark paintings, we wanted to freshen things up to give a less serious tone,” describes the designer. Emphasizing textures, Doughtie opted for a grasscloth coffee table for a casual yet sophisticated feel, and a sofa covered in velvet and finished with bullion trim.

WHEN YOU ARRIVE in an unfamiliar destination after a long flight, nothing is more comforting than chic, cozy accommodations. Hotel Bella Grande, one of Copenhagen’s newest design-forward hotels, is just such a place. Motivated by Scandinavian Airlines’ new direct flight connecting Atlanta with the Danish capital, I happily flew the nine hours overnight and took the ultraefficient Metro from the airport to the City Hall Square stop, a five-minute walk from the property. The hotel is the second lodging offering from Copenhagen Food Collective (Cofoco) that also owns and operates 18 unique restaurants around the city. The group’s love of Italian culture is evident: a geometric marble floor graces the lobby, vintage framed scarves become large-scale art in the lounge, and enormous coffee table books pay homage to Italian designers. The five-story building, built in 1899, underwent a complete renovation to open as a 109-room and suite hotel in April 2024. I accepted a brass key with a scarlet tassel and headed to my room. Gold swirls and floral motifs, reminiscent of Versace barocco designs, float on the black carpets lining the halls of guest floors. Inside my home for the next few days, I 88

GARDEN FARE
For elevated presentations of classic Danish food—think smørrebrød openfaced sandwiches on housemade bread—and flawlessly paired wines, head to Fasangården. The 18th-century house is tucked in the sprawling Frederiksberg Gardens.

found that the Tonen Agency, led by principals Malene Bech-Pedersen and Mette Bonavent, had infused the space with a blend of contemporary and vintage style. Muted shades of cream, white, and burgundy with gold accents create an instant sense of glamour. The room’s centerpiece, a bed with a waveshaped velvet headboard, is clad in a plush white duvet, over which presides a pumpkin-shaped Oi Soi Oi silk shade light fixture. Metallic bedside lamps by Tom Dixon add soft lighting, and a sleek dressing table is both functional and stylish. It’s the kind of room that makes weary travelers feel instantly at ease. If the guest rooms are muted, the hotel’s elegant Italian restaurant, Donna, is anything but. Feminine and romantic, the dining room features glossy red ceilings and bubblegum pink walls, blood-red sofas, candlelit tables, and pink curtains framing floor-to-ceiling windows. Additional seating spills over into the botanical-filled five-story atrium space in the center of the hotel where a checkered marble floor is done in terracotta and cream and banquettes are festooned in floral brocade. Either space is an Instagrammer’s dream. The food matches the vibe: Think focaccia with whipped ricotta, super-fresh salads, and handmade pastas alongside picture-perfect cocktails. While travelers can’t miss iconic Copenhagen sights such as Tivoli Gardens, the crown jewels at Rosenborg Castle, colorful row houses lining the canal at Nyhavn, and the royal residence at Amalienborg Palace, the charming Hotel Bella Grande adds another compelling reason to visit. hotelbellagrande.com 89
