Fresh off a plane from France, Style Editor Clinton Smith asks an array of Atlanta design pros to weigh in on the latest discoveries from the Paris Deco Off design fair—and what you might soon be seeing in a home near you. Ooh la la!
PARIS IS KNOWN AS the City of Light, but in winter, it can be quite cold, damp and pretty dark (it barely eeks out nine hours of daylight that time of year). Besides the majestic Eiffel Tower glimmering in the night sky, one other bright spot of the season is the Paris Deco Off trade show for design professionals who are on the hunt for the newest product offerings from companies in the world of interior design. The most recent event in January— with happenings spanning both the Left and Right Banks—revealed a world of illuminating new finds for the home. We caught up with a number of Atlanta designers who attended Paris Deco Off and asked them about what they found inspiring. “I always discover incredible new lines and products at Paris Deco Off,” says Atlanta designer Susan Bozeman, “and it gives me a chance to also source antiques and one-of-a-kind pieces for clients.” It was, in fact, the first time many had attended the fair since 2020 (preCOVID-19), so being able to be inspired by new collections, amidst the sights and sounds of Paris, felt extra fulfilling creatively. From contemporary creations to classics that have been reimagined for today, there was no shortage of high style on display for the home. AS A TRIBUTE TO THE CITY of Atlanta, partners Ryan Turner, Todd Mussman and Chris Hall of restaurant group Unsukay bring to life their latest concept Roshambo. Located inside the Peachtree Battle Shopping Center, restaurant-goers will be pleasantly surprised at what all is behind “The Diner’s Diner” light-up sign. “Todd, Ryan and myself are all transplants,” says Hall. “We chose this city and are proud to live here, raise our families here and call Atlanta home.” Also the brains behind Muss & Turner’s, Local Three Kitchen & Bar and MTH Pizza, the trio dedicates Roshambo to the love they have for the city and its people. “Roshambo is the traditional name for the game also known as Rock, Paper, Scissors,” says Hall. “And since we are modeling ourselves after a diner, we replaced it with Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.” Chef Kevin Leveille describes Roshambo’s dishes as seasonal diner classics with a nod to the history of the space. “We pay homage to Jim White’s old restaurant that was located in the shopping center with our Blackened Redfish Pontchartrain, and provide our own takes on diner classics at the same time,” says Leveille. Separated into different dining categories, guests can choose from a variety of dishes from the menu like the Elvis French Toast made with peanut butter mousse, banana, bacon and maple syrup or the Steak Dinner paired with a loaded potato and garlic broccolini. As an added thrill, each food item is plated on a painted hand representing rock, paper or scissors, and diners are encouraged to guess which symbol they have under their entree. “We want guests to have fun with the atmosphere and food,” says

“We want guests to have fun with the atmosphere and food, just as we do.” —Chef Kevin Leveille Leveille, “just as we do.” For the drinks, think authentic cocktails shaken to perfection. “I would describe the cocktails as absolute classics, made as they were originally,” says beverage manager Jonathan Kloepping. “Not only is our cocktail list very familiar for people who have been around a bar or two, but teaching our staff the history of these cocktails and where they originated helps to embrace the history and culture of the drink.” Designed by Amy Price of Starling Studio, John Boggs of Phase 5 Creative, and Bart Sasso of Sasso & Co. alongside Hall, Mussman and Turner, Roshambo’s interior exudes a cozy, yet stylish diner setting with plenty of Atlanta representation. Hall characterizes the design as a steady diet of wit, whimsy and irreverence. “Everything in Roshambo is there for a reason and has a story behind it,” says Hall. “Very little is random; that’s the way we like it—authentic and personal.” roshamboatl.com

SEEKING A RELAXING RETREAT for gatherings big and small, a pair of empty nesters purchased a lush lot on a point overlooking Lake Keowee in South Carolina and commissioned architect Peter Block of Peter Block Architects to design a home that effortlessly combines historic and contemporary influences. “This is a building with two souls,” says Block. “It feels old, but it has a youthful enthusiasm.”

Reminiscent of the prominent camp clubhouses that dotted the White Mountains for generations, the two-and-a-half-story English Arts and Crafts-style stone dwelling is built into a hill, its lower-level bar’s giant arched windows opening to the swimming pool patio. “The stone walls give you a feeling of comfort, like you’re living in something substantial that will last generations,” says Block. 37

FOR DENVER-BASED EMPTY nesters, Pete and Kathy Gillespie, the Gulf shore community of Seagrove, Florida, has long signaled rest and relaxation—a place to paddleboard, bike and take long walks on the beach. After many visits to the area, they purchased a property near the water and commissioned GLM Designs, Inc. to design a three-level stucco abode and interior designer and longtime friend Liz Williams to help them make it their own. Hoping future grandchildren will spend time there, they emphasized that comfort and durability were just as important as aesthetics. “We didn’t want it to feel like a show home,” says Kathy. “We envisioned a place where you can throw a towel over the chair, plop down and watch TV.” Noting their appreciation for green and blue hues, the designer leaned into the palette. The painted pecky cypress perimeter cabinetry in the kitchen, for example, is punctuated by a steely blue island paired with apple green counter stools. And lime green draperies pop 57

ANNE ERBESFIELD AND Cathleen Carrington are designers, business partners, sisters and best friends. For more than 30 years, they’ve worked together to create beautiful interiors for their clients in Atlanta, playing off each other’s design sensibilities and sense of fun. It’s not uncommon for one sister to visit the other’s home and stealthily rearrange decor to the delight of the other. This kindred design perspective and humorforward approach has fortified their relationship beyond the typical bounds of sisterhood. “We’re best friends,” says Erbesfield. And after a visit to the North Carolina High Country, Erbesfield found the perfect mountain retreat that was a short walk from the charming downtown, featured a spectacular view of Satulah Mountain and had plenty of extra space to host family and friends. The designer wanted a vacation home that celebrated her love of travel, antiques and art, and with Carrington’s help, she deftly embellished spaces with an eclectic mix of treasured finds 75
