summer sizzle AFTER A RAINY START TO SUMMER, Atlanta’s notorious humidity is kicking in with a vengeance. Our August issue, a celebration of architecture, seeks to counteract that formidable heat with a wave of cool breezes in the form of an award-winning historic preservation effort in the heart of Buckhead; an unconventional new-build in Sandy Spring; and a neighborhood-sensitive renovation, a rarity in Atlanta these days.

Each of these projects—imagined or reimagined by our industry’s top design-build talents, such as decorator Jackye Lanham and architects William B. Litchfield, William “Bill” H. Harrison and D. Stanley Dixon—walk a deft balance of dashing and daring, adding refreshing dimension to Atlanta’s well-heeled residential landscape in the process.

As many of you know, Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles rarely misses a designer showhouse. This month, we celebrate two Southern interior designers, Susan Ferrier of Atlanta and Jonathan Savage of Nashville, who both individually and collectively shined the spotlight on Southern design, thanks to their participation (and subsequent showstopping spaces) in the Kips Bay Decorator Show House this past Spring; we bring you to Park Avenue on page 15. Similarly, in preparation for the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Cashiers Designer Showhouse in North Carolina, this month we are pleased to highlight rooms from the solar eclipse this at the Showhouse this month on August 21—talk about a once-in-a-lifetime sizzle!

AFTER 10 YEARS AT ITS ALPHARETTA HEADQUARTERS, Bell Kitchen & Bath Studios expanded its footprint in June, when the company unveiled a second showroom at ADAC West. Spanning approximately 3,000 square feet and bathed in natural light, the new location includes an airy meeting room and back office, as well as vignettes that showcase Bell’s position at the forefront of custom cabinetry design.

SUSAN FERRIER After viewing the master bedroom of this Park Avenue townhouse in person, Atlanta designer Susan Ferrier of McAlpine never even entertained the thought of employing a lighter palette for her design. “Using a deep tone is something a lot of people are afraid of,” says Ferrier, who swathed the room in Farrow & Ball’s moody Studio Green, and took the opportunity to show that brightness can instead come from upholstery and accessories.

Designed using resources primarily from ADAC, the result is nothing short of sensuous, drawing its luxuriously layered appeal from silk velvet Holland & Sherry draperies with metallic applique trim; a brass Jonathan Browning chandelier; a hide headboard with nailhead trim; and unique curiosities such as whale ribs. Floating the bed in this rectangular-shaped room allowed for 360-degrees of circulation through the space, and also created intimate zones, including a fireside lounge and desk/vanity area.

For the two-story grand staircase and landing of this Park Avenue townhouse, noted Nashville designer Jonathan Savage created a showstopping statement that also harkened back to his Southern roots, thanks to a dramatic customdesigned wallcovering created in collaboration with Los Angeles-based MJ Atelier. Featuring flora and fauna native to Nashville—everything from a whitetailed deer and a Tennessee mockingbird to a red fox, raccoon and magnolia blossom—each motif is rendered in hand-applied plaster using Farrow & Ball’s All White, adding unique depth to its Off-Black background. Also adding dimension to the space: mirrored niche insets laid in a harlequin pattern; ice crystal sconces by William Haines; and Lucite stair rods against the Patterson Flynn & Martin runner.

Early Days

Hal Ainsworth grew up in Mississippi, where his eye was honed by graceful homes filled with antiques and fine furnishings. Winton Noah was raised in Texas and holds an engineering degree, but an extended trip to Europe with Ainsworth changed everything.

“After living abroad for two years, we were bored and ready to get back to work,” says Ainsworth.

They first opened Horse of a Different Color on Peachtree Road. Surrounded by well-known landmarks across from Piedmont Hospital that included Cloudt’s and Deanne Levison American Antiques, the row of shops attracted top collectors, designers and noted visitors, such as Bill Blass.

“It was an amazing location where people converged to eat and shop, and business was so strong that we opened our second location, The Wicker Horse,” says Noah.

In 1978 they shuttered the retail shops and opened the Ainsworth-Noah showroom on the second floor of ADAC, mixing fabric lines, wallcoverings, furniture, lighting and floor coverings with decorative accessories.

“Atlanta has been fortunate to have both independent showrooms and a clientele that has taste and appreciates fine things,” says Ainsworth.

Whether designers were searching for the perfect Provençal confit pot, English baronial chairs or gilt rococo console, they could depend on Ainsworth-Noah for a broad variety of wares mixed with a vast selection of lines, delivered with exceptional customer service.

Ainsworth remained the design genius while Noah was the business brains, and together they propelled the company to reach nationally renowned designers while providing merchandise for prestigious showhouses, including the Kips Bay Decorator Show House, many Atlanta decorators’ showcases and the Cashiers Designer Showhouse.

“Designers shop personalities and products, so we’ve enjoyed cultivating meaningful and lasting relationships,” says Noah.

The Capstone

On October 1, 2015, Ainsworth and Noah ushered in the second generation of the company when they named Dennis Hunt president. “Dennis began as an intern with us, so this step was like entrusting it to our son,” says Noah. In 2016 the showroom celebrated with a Grand Re-Opening to honor both Hunt’s new role and his exquisite renovation of the fifth-floor, 40,000-squarefoot showroom.

The Horizon

Hunt is at the helm, and Ainsworth and Noah come into the showroom most days. “Why should I quit doing what I absolutely love?” asks Ainsworth. After all, their wicker horse turned out to be made of marble—elegant, polished and timeless.

designer says. With skillful attention to detail, McLaurin’s update to the conservatory-like covered space kept the focus on the views and greenery. She pulled in classic and new McGuire furniture, fit for adults and children, that appear to have accumulated over the home’s 100 years and emphasize multigenerational moments. Georgia architect and artist Brandon Godwin’s feather fabric line inspired the peaceful palette. “That’s why you go to the mountains: comfort and serenity,” says McLaurin.

MEG HARRINGTON AND ANN HUFF “We fell madly in love with the guesthouse the minute we walked in,” says Meg Harrington of Huff Harrington Home. “It needed a major face-lift but nothing that a little imagination and Sherwin-Williams Alabaster paint couldn’t fix.” She and business partner Ann Huff created a collected feel by layering romantic pieces—a glass and Lucite coffee table from the 1970s, eye-catching circular wooden chairs, and a sleek white resin waterfall console topped with a spectacular 19th-century Louis mirror—that evoke decades of styles and hint at Huff Harrington’s trademark French sensibilities. To make the space feel even more open and light, the duo skipped window treatments, allowing natural light to illuminate the high-beamed room. “It felt very appropriate to ditch anything covering the windows,” says Harrington.

PATRICIA MCLEAN Patricia McLean embraced the long, narrow living room with a series of vignettes harmonized by her signature layering of antiques and fabrics.

“There’s a place for quiet. There’s a place for interaction,” says McLean, the 2016 showhouse’s honorary co-chair. Her designs typically emanate from textiles, and the showhouse is no exception.

A serpentine Lee Jofa fabric with reds, pinks and browns features on a custom table hiding a heat register, as well as the draperies, chairs and pillows. The tree-of-life pattern joins fabrics from Duralee, Brunschwig & Fils and Pindler, and timeless accessories like tortoise. Creams and caramels on the walls and ceilings capture natural light in a space truly meant for all ages.

LIZ WILLIAMS Inspired by Burt Farm’s lush grounds—visible just outside the dining room’s bay window—designer Liz Williams brought the outdoors in, decorating the space with floral prints and pops of fresh green. Thibaut’s Nemour fabric, used on the drapery and dining chairs, combines both of these elements.

“It seemed fitting for the mountains because it is a traditional floral but with unusual and updated colors mixing green and gray,” says the designer. To balance the room’s low ceiling and add interest, Williams covered the walls with a woven wallcovering showcasing a geometric pattern, which serves as the backdrop for an assortment of artwork.

GINGER BREWTON Ginger Brewton turned the challenge of the low 8-foot ceiling in the master bedroom into a solution. With the question “What’s calming and peaceful when you’re lying in bed?” in mind, the Charleston, South Carolina, designer evoked sky views and embraced the Southern tradition of painting the ceiling—along with the walls—a restful blue. Her version of cozy, modern-meetstraditional design incorporates less ornate detailing in favor of clean lines. A custom slim, four-poster mahogany bed and the proportions of the warm gold mirrors and lamps accomplish her goal of not overpowering the space. “You still feel like there’s breathing room,” she says.

JAMES WHEELER Much of the home’s original architecture is present in this bedroom, including the stone fireplace and the paneled walls, ceiling and floor. “Because the room was dark from all of the stained wood and stone, my initial vision was to create a layered guest room that used fabrics and furnishings to lighten the space while enveloping its guests in total luxury with rich, layered textures,” says designer James Wheeler, who juxtaposed modern touches with the home’s rustic elements, using off-white, textured fabrics to add lightness. A floorto-ceiling panel of wool curtains adds a contrasting softness and conceals a nonfunctioning closet in the middle of the wall, another original architectural element.

JANIE WILBURN A bunny hopped by Janie Wilburn on her first visit to the showhouse. “This cute rabbit was just introducing me to the property,” she says. The Atlanta designer embraced that moment in two renovated bathrooms and a second-floor landing.

Lee Jofa wallpaper, inspired by Hunt Slonem’s rabbit paintings, gives a youthful nod to the pastoral setting and offsets the gray in the Carrara marble and the pink ceiling. When a cartoon-animal wallcovering was removed, Wilburn captured its woodland essence with a sophisticated custom-printed fox fabric by Market Linen in another bathroom and a Carrie Penley deer painting on the landing. “It’s more modern and playful and an interpretation of the nature setting,” she says.

CHRIS HOLT When designing the third-floor bedroom and sitting room, Chris Holt of Holt Interiors and Noah J. & Co. envisioned an open, airy space for younger family members, with multiple areas for work, play and rest. His first order of business: to compensate for low ceilings and angled walls by painting the space a fresh white and using low-slung furnishings. Drawing from Burt Farm’s organic setting, Holt mixed clean-lined pieces with a variety of woods, vintage rugs and artwork.

DOUG HILTON Sloped walls and mountain views guided Atlanta designer Doug Hilton’s vision for an artist’s atelier in the converted garret. Counteracting the wood paneling, Hilton draws the eye up using a turquoise Jim Thompson bamboo-print wallcovering and faux burlap on the ceiling. Together with the white, orange and citron Jim Thompson pillow fabrics, the space assumes a cheery, eclectic ambience. But the artist’s retreat also has an edgy appeal. A photograph on Lucite of a woman in a dancer’s stocking by Harriet Leibowitz entices guests, while contemporary, 19th-century and primitive pieces and reupholstered vintage French chairs and floor pillows offer a lounge-worthy space. “All of my rooms have a collected mix,” says Hilton.

Naomi Von Habersham SUMMER IS IN FULL SWING, and with it come stifling heat, high humidity and the return of that dreadful reality show Big Brother. As if the scorching temperatures aren’t bad enough, I have to contend with those incessant commercials touting the lewd and lascivious behavior of the half-witted Big Brother cast. It’s enough to send me into fits of apoplexy!

Now that I’ve gotten that off my chest, I can focus on the happy attributes of an Atlanta summer. For me, summertime means the pleasure of a cold supper on a hot, sticky evening.

What’s better than a meal of prosciutto and melon, Caprese salad (prepared with home-grown tomatoes, of course) or cold fried chicken, enjoyed in the air-conditioned environs of one’s home and washed down with a glass of crisp white wine? I’m getting hungry just thinking about it. Then there’s the beatthe-heat comfort of bedtime, when crisp cotton sheets and the breeze of a whirring ceiling fan create a winning combination of coolness and coziness that you can only experience at this time of year.

I don’t much go for summer blockbuster movies anymore (sorry, computer animation is not my idea of fun), but I do love to see whatever is playing at Tara Cinemas, especially on a summer afternoon. You leave the sweltering temps and the blazing sun of the outdoors for the air-conditioned darkness of the theater, only to emerge once again to daylight but at a time of day when the heat has started to break. Of course, movie theaters are also the one place where you can don a sweater—my favorite article of clothing—in August and still feel comfortable.

At the end of the day, it’s summer’s simple pleasures that mean the most to me. Frozen Reese’s cups and Nestlé Crunch bars; the flavors of Baskin-Robbins’ mint chocolate chip and daiquiri ice; watermelon; Georgia peaches; Sunday afternoons spent lazing in the shade; boiled peanuts and a glass bottle of Coca-Cola; trips to the farmers market; and an allaround sense of contentment are what summer is all about.

GENERAL INFORMATION The Cashiers Designer Showhouse™ is looked forward to every year by the thousands of visitors who come for our glorious summers. To celebrate 20 consecutive years of the Showhouse, we are proud to present not one but three houses at “Cottage Walk” in the center of the village of Cashiers. Each epitomizes the mountain summer vernacular and a new look for Cashiers. Please visit CashiersHistoricalSociety.org/Showhouse for up-to-date Showhouse information.

Sunday: 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. *Last entry into Showhouse each day is 3 p.m.

PARKING & TRANSPORTATION All parking will be off Frank Allen Road opposite the Cashiers-Glenville Fire Department headquarters. The Showhouse is within easy walking distance from the parking lot. In addition, a shuttle bus to the houses will run every 15 minutes.

DIRECTIONS Burns Street, the location of the Showhouse, is a short L-shaped street running between Highway 107 South and Frank Allen Road.

These are directions to the parking lot on Frank Allen Road.

FROM THE WEST & HIGHLANDS Take Highway 64 to Cashiers. Coming down the hill into Cashiers take a right just past the Fire Station onto Frank Allen Road. Entrance to the parking lot is on the left.

FROM THE EAST & BREVARD Take Highway 64 towards Cashiers. Continue straight on 64 through the traffic light at the intersection of Highways 64 and 107 in Cashiers. Take the first left onto Frank Allen Road. The parking lot will be on your left.

FROM THE NORTH & SYLVA Take Highway 107 to Cashiers and turn right at the traffic light onto Highway 64. Turn left on to Frank Allen Road. The parking lot will be on your left.

FROM THE SOUTH & WALHALLA Take Route 28 to Highway 107 to Cashiers. At the first traffic light, turn left onto Frank Allen Road and proceed past the Post Office to the parking lot, which will be on your right.

Some of his work can be seen on display in the heart of Highlands and has been featured in Veranda, Architectural Di-

gest, Elle Decor, and Garden & Gun. He has received many awards for architectural excellence, and we are honored to have him as our guest. His newest book, Creating Home: Design for Living, will be available for purchase and signing on the porch following lunch.

Iced tea and cookies will be served every day from 1–4:30 p.m. at the Refreshments Tent on the Showhouse grounds. Champagne, wine and beer will be available for purchase. On these afternoons, there may be “pop up” speakers talking about the history of Cashiers.

TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE

We cannot claim credit but it is big. This is the first total solar eclipse to be visible in Cashiers since the 1500s, and there won’t be another until 2300. From beginning to end the eclipse will last over 2 hours.

The period of totality will be 2 minutes 30 seconds depending upon your exact location. And it is FREE. Just be sure to get a pair of the special Eclipse Glasses to protect your eyes.

PROTECTING AND PRESERVING THE HERITAGE OF CASHIERS VALLEY *For more information, visit cashiershistoricalsociety.org.

The Cashiers Historical Society was established in 1996 to preserve and protect the village identity and heritage of Cashiers Valley through education, stewardship and advocacy. Each year, through your generosity and support of Showhouse, we are able to further our mission.

We have completed a very busy season of activities and programs. We started with the Heritage Apple Day in mid-March, which drew a crowd of more than 200 people to the Cashiers Community Center. Our volunteers taught attendees grafting techniques while our Education Committee hosted events for kids, including apple tasting, coloring and other apple-centric crafts. This event also resulted in more than 300 heritage apple trees planted in the Cashiers Valley area.

In May and June, we sponsored the “Carts and Horses” antique toys exhibit, featuring toys from the 19th century that would have been at home in the Zachary-Tolbert house.

Mid-June saw the return of our annual Jan Wyatt Symposium.

This year’s theme was “The Heirloom Gardener” and was chaired by renowned garden expert and Cashiers resident Mary Palmer Dargan. The morning featured lectures and demonstrations by nationally recognized experts, while the afternoon

programs, which were open to the public, were devoted to the concepts of heritage gardening crafts, demonstrations and plant swaps.

From June 30 through August 20, Colonel John’s Cabin has been home to an exhibit of Cherokee items. Titled “Understanding Our Past, Shaping Our Future,” the items featured focus on Cherokee language and culture. The exhibit is sponsored by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in partnership with Cherokee Central Schools, Southwestern Community College and Western Carolina University.

July also featured Music on the Grounds, our annual afternoon and evening celebration of music that takes place on the grounds of the historical sites under our stewardship.

Looking forward, we’ll be hosting our annual Founders Day for area third and fourth graders on September 28, while the fourth edition of “Faces and Places” goes on display in Colonel John’s Cabin from September 15 through October 28.

Our biggest program of the year, however, has been the roofto-foundation restoration of our historic properties. Unoccupied historic properties present an unusual variety of maintenance problems, and this has been the year to truly fulfill our mission of “protecting and preserving the heritage of Cashiers Valley” by putting them back into tip-top shape.

The homeowner’s antique Swedish chandelier established the tone for the dining room. Lanham enlisted artisan Raymond Goins to paint tone-on-tone greige panels, and Litchfield and his associate Tiffany Watkins further articulated the Swedish feel with casings and vertically ribbed cornices. “We wanted it to be a little jewel box, a bit of a surprise,” says Lanham.

ON A VERDANT BUCKHEAD STREET graced with grand old dames and classic beauties of the architectural—and, no doubt, human—variety, a 1930s-era Colonial Revival cottage radiates a welcoming, girl-next-door sensibility. Although not quite as stately as many of its neighbors, the house proved to be the right fit for a woman moving from San Francisco to Atlanta. She was, in every sense, coming home, both to the city where she was raised and to the very street where she had lived as a child, only this time to a place of her own and with a young daughter in tow.

Although the cottage certainly had its fair share of curb appeal, it required some updating to suit its new occupants. The owner turned to architect William B. Litchfield and designer Jackye Lanham, who have collaborated on numerous houses, including several for members of the homeowner’s family.

“It was important to be sensitive to the neighborhood, the period and the style,” says Litchfield.

“The front of the house was in good shape, and inside the proportions were good, but we needed to make some tweaks, create better flow and return the interior architectural detailing to what it might have been originally, as it had been through other renovations through the years.” Perhaps what it needed most of all, both architect and designer agree, was a whole lot more charm.

With its integration into the interior of the house, the family can hang out and entertain here year-round. The mirror from B.D. Jeffries was made from an architectural element that was likely once used in a garden.

One of the client’s first requests was for an interesting staircase. Litchfield came across the ideal solution in one of the many books he mines for historical research: an intricate design from an 18th-century house in Maine, which felt more correct and compelling than the previous plain wood pickets. “It has a contemporary, graphic appeal, but it’s based on a classic motif,” he says. That statement could easily characterize the creative team’s approach toward the entire project.

“I’ve known the homeowner since she was in elementary school,” says Lanham. “She grew up surrounded by traditional things and has a deep appreciation for them, but we also needed to use a light touch to keep the look young, fun, and to feel like her.”

Lanham wove the owner’s love of pale blue, lavender and dusky apricot hues throughout in fabrics and finishes, and used inherited pieces along with the designer’s own finds for a mix of furnishings and accessories that appears both fresh and collected over time.

Although the renovation didn’t involve adding any square footage to the existing footprint, one significant alteration allows the house to live much larger. A former screened porch was transformed into a year-round space after screens were swapped for iron-clad windows and a door leading out to the garden. French doors that separated the porch and living room were removed and replaced with portieres, improving circulation and encouraging the spaces to relate directly with each other.

The stacked-stone fireplace, which both Litchfield and Lanham believed looked more appropriate for the mountains than in town, was parged (smoothed with plaster) and whitewashed. With a black, contemporary twist on a starburst mirror hung above the mantel, it has become a striking focal point on axis with the front door. “It draws you right through the house into that room, and it’s a friendly space that feels good,” says Litchfield.

“Everything just seems to embrace you from the moment you walk in,” says Lanham, reflecting upon the project’s completion. That much-needed infusion of charm emanates from the entryway to the daughter’s cozy bedroom and guest rooms carved out of former attic space and dormers upstairs. WHEN A DEVASTATING FIRE demolished one of Buckhead’s most treasured historic homes, the tragedy was transformed into a happy ending—even earning two elite architectural awards—thanks to the firm of D. Stanley Dixon Architect.

The Neel Reid–designed residence perched between Habersham and Vernon Roads was known to Gerry Hull since he was a boy.

When it was razed to its foundation following the fire in 2014, it was scarcely a day before Hull, its owner for a decade, vowed to rebuild.

“There was no way I could have envisioned another house on this site,” he says.

“The Hulls called on us because of our experience and respect for renovations of other historic homes in the neighborhood,” firm principal Stan Dixon explains. “They knew we would have the right sensitivity to bring the house back to Neel Reid’s original intention.”

Dixon’s humble respect for Reid’s “classical, restrained and elegant” precedent was immediately evident—even if it required sacrificing some degree of his own creativity in the process.

“Reid had such a very strong sense of scale and proportion,” Dixon says, referencing the precise profiles of the architecture. So committed was Dixon to authenticity that—after extensively researching Reid’s original plans and drawings at the Atlanta History Center—he even insisted upon using reclaimed antique bricks, replicating original masonry joints and customizing windows with the same weighted pulley system as the 1920s originals.

Modern-day updates were mostly mechanical and electrical, with a few upscale flourishes—such as adding a new slate roof and replacing the 1848 Zuber wallpaper in the dining room.

“It is a source of joy for me to live in this house,” says Hull, the happiness of he and his wife, Patty, renewed. “I feel like its keeper, with a responsibility to maintain it not just for us but for everyone who passes by.” See Resources, Back of Book.

PATRICK SHEEHAN WASN’T IN THE MARKET for a new home in 2014. But building is in the blood of the acclaimed Atlanta contractor and owner of Sheehan Built Homes, so when the perfect corner lot became available in his Sandy Springs neighborhood, Patrick did what any man would do: He asked his wife.

“I called Wendy and asked her to lunch, and, without missing a beat, she asked what I wanted,” he laughs. “We’d built a modern ranch with rustic warm woods in the neighborhood a couple of years earlier, but when this corner lot went back on the market, I looked at it for clients. After walking the lot three times, a lightbulb went off. I thought, ‘Geez—this would be great for our family.’ ” With Wendy, children Ryder (8) and Colbie (4), and golden retrievers Burton and Roscoe on board, Patrick collaborated with architect William “Bill” Harrison, AIA, and designer Frank Heery of Harrison Design to create a modern farmhouse. “This project’s

style is more vernacular, rustic and modern, boasting a warm, cabinlike feel but cleaned up with elegant lines,” says Harrison. “Many elements nod to the rustic feel of a warehouse, like exposed beams, modern steel windows and the open floor plan.”

Harrison and Heery note that the sense of balance is very strong throughout the home, even though it isn’t symmetrical. “It’s almost like a symphony decided to mix in some pop music,” says Harrison.

“We reconfigured and invigorated elements seen in traditional Atlanta homes.”

To prevent the home from feeling stark, Patrick incorporated five species of wood throughout to add warmth, including hickory floors, African mahogany cabinets and shelving, cypress ceilings, white cedar and knotty poplar.

Patrick on nearly 15 homes, but unlike most of their collaborations, this farmhouse was less about fabrics, furnishings and fixtures and more about materials and finishes.

“The interior was dictated by the architecture. It was both minimalist and functional, so we softened the interior with finishes on the materials that felt authentic and added warmth to space,” says Wilburn. “For example, for the steel finishes in the kitchen, we added a patina to the raw, new steel to add some age and warmth.”

Another design decision was the placement of the television.

Patrick prefers art over a screen as the focal point above the grand limestone fireplace. But with large windows and limited vertical real estate, his options were limited. Heery proposed creating a floating wall that could also introduce a spot for a butler’s pantry, bar and custom 200-bottle wine rack, adding another layer to the open floor plan without losing the streamlined, ranch-style visual of the main room.

This attention to detail was pivotal throughout the home. From the custom industrial light fixture above the dining table (designed

and assembled by Patrick) to the exterior’s classic board-and-batten juxtaposed with modern metal details, every inch of the project was designed to accommodate the family and, in some cases, their fourlegged companions.

For the Sheehans’ two dogs, who swim every day in the outdoor oasis-style pool designed by J. Brownlee Design in Nashville, a designated wash station was placed right off the foyer. But this isn’t your run-of-the-mill mudroom. After Patrick and Wilburn’s search for hexagonal slate tiles came up short, Patrick designed his own by cutting the patterns for both the mudroom and foyer floors on site from 12-inch square tiles—a sleek but highly functional option for the well-trafficked areas.

From the tiles to the timbers, the Sheehan family home is a modern marvel; it feels warm and inviting without the weight of stuffy furnishings or ornate, over-the-top details. “So much of Atlanta is traditional two-story homes, many of which I’ve built. But there’s a trend now for this pared-down, ranch-style living,” says Patrick. “That was the catalyst for the project.” See Resources, Back of Book.

Westward, Whoa!

ROM THE WEST COAST, I could hear the collective gasp of horror at the demolition of the famed Philip Shutze–designed Maddox House in Buckhead last winter. Prior to 2016, no one had the audacity to destroy the architecture of the esteemed architect, and certainly not in a neighborhood on the National Register of Historic Places.

While Shutze, James Means and Neel Reid were designing Atlanta homes with perfect proportions and extraordinary attention to detail, Southern California was blossoming with Spanish Colonial–inspired haciendas. Red-tiled roofs, courtyards and painted tiles reflected the breezy California lifestyle from Santa Barbara to Laguna. Later Frank Lloyd Wright and Charles Eames defined the low lines of midcentury architecture, and fabulous modern homes popped up in Palm Springs—now renowned as much for midcentury modern design as for golf.

Sadly, L.A. slipped into decades of poorly built tract homes that offered a profusion of cheap stucco, slider windows, carports and wall-to-wall carpet. The compact houses with choppy floor plans sat on lots defined by feet instead of acres.

kets in the country, but I’m dumbfounded when people pay exorbitant prices for 8-foot-tall popcorn ceilings with white wall-to-wall carpet and 1970s sliding glass doors. Where is the crown molding? What are engineered hardwood floors?

French doors do exist outside of Paris! I can’t even address Los Angeles lighting…because I will misspell fluorescent.

While L.A. offers an abundance of tract homes, there are also landmark houses. When a Wright house was demolished in 2012 and Beverly Hills relaxed preservation requirements, the ensuing debates fueled efforts within the city. Developers argue for new homes that fit today’s tech-oriented lifestyle, while neighborhoods galvanize to fend off buyers who do not appreciate the historic architecture in areas such as beautiful Hancock Park and trendy Highland Park.

The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation has done much for Atlanta, but it still needs vast support. It’s great that the Atlanta City Council has put a moratorium on new construction in Tuxedo Park, but I hope it extends to more neighborhoods. Otherwise, we’ll be forced to bring out the saying “bless their little hearts” about anyone who dares to destroy Atlanta’s rich architectural history.
