ARBLE DESERVES attention and delights your eyes in the bathroom of this new Piedmont Heights home. A focal wall with striking stone in charcoal, gray, black and white hides an inset tub, continuing uninterrupted to the shower. “We were able to use that to create a lot of visual interest,” says designer Joel Kelly. The glass shower wall becomes the only clue that one might bathe in the room. The homeowners, who moved to Atlanta from Chicago, desired an urban feel that would be more congruous with the rest of the house, which has darker interiors. Sculpture and art, much of which was passed down from family to the homeowners, enhances the room’s artistic edge. The Walker Zanger marble is continued on the countertops, where a pair of inset walnut vanities by Block & Chisel act more 10

RESOURCES like elegant consoles thanks to their rich, layered appeal. “You’re going to continue to see bathrooms being designed as if they are rooms, like any other room,” says Kelly, owner of Joel Kelly Design and co-owner of Wyeth Ray Interiors. In lieu of a window treatment, shutters were added above the tub to blend into the stone. Kelly balances the marble with a horsehair Phillip Jeffries wallcovering that offers warmth, texture and sound absorption for the homeowners, who are physicians with varying sleep schedules. The long linear lines in the Circa Lighting sconces complement the horizontal design of the wallcovering, while hide rugs on the travertine floors and a sculptural root stool by Chista enhance the masculinity aesthetic. “Each client has their own story to write when it comes to what their home is supposed to be or look like,” Kelly says. “Our job is to make that more interesting, more fulfilled.” 12

OR A NEW TUXEDO PARK residence, interior designer Tish Mills Kirk envisioned her clients, who have four children, coming together at moments in their busy lives to breathe. Therefore, the main goal for this spa-like bathroom suite was for stress to evaporate upon entering. The result of careful collaboration between Mills Kirk, architecture firm Harrison Design and general contractor McGarrity-Garcia Residential, the allwhite retreat is a marble masterpiece. In the same way that the design-build team and homeowners harmonized their efforts, the professionals recognized that each element couldn’t be the star. “Everything in this space is in such balance,” Mills Kirk says. “There’s nothing that jars against anything else, so it is very, very tranquil.” White marble walls and a stunner of a marble-floor rug—which was hand-cut from 16-by-24-inch tiles in a hexagon pattern—achieves a classic, cohesive look. The pickets on the shower floor play off the pattern of the marble rug, sourced from Marmi Natural Stone. Two mirror-image vanity areas were designed by Karpaty Cabinets for his-andher needs, with a morning bar and fridge concealed on the husband’s side. Thanks to implicit trust from the homeowners, Mills Kirk emphasizes, the design professionals employed quiet but statement-making elements, such as the architectural swoop that defines each vanity. Similarly, for the custom vanity mirrors, the edge floats over the frame, presenting another subtle focal point. “The detail is so precise that it feels almost effortless,” Mills Kirk says. Light-and-airy, motorized shades add to the bathroom’s luxurious nature. “I love walking in that bathroom,” Mills Kirk says.

WELVE-FOOT CEILINGS AND a shotgun-style layout allowed Jennifer Reiner and Robert White with Reiner White Design Studio to add their signature brand of intriguing sophistication to the interiors of this new North Atlanta residence. Exposed wood beams, steel-and-glass transom windows and thick moldings establish a hefty scale in the master bathroom, while shinier elements—such as Caesarstone countertops, a porcelain floor tile laid in an argyle pattern, vintage brass hardware and Newport Brass plumbing fixtures in a satin gold—brighten the space, says White. “As far as Jennifer’s and my tastes go, we don’t do delicate very well,” White says. Zanger runs through the 540-square-foot bathroom, where halls designated for the husband and wife are bridged by the steam shower with a “drive-through” layout. “They can enter the shower from either end of their worlds,” White says. Massive glass doors open to the 15-foot shower, offering the maximum amount of daylight for an airy ambience. Around the corner, a closet custom-designed for the wife by Atlanta designer Matthew Quinn offers the ultimate solutions for organization and personalization. The scale and monochromatic palette are the firm’s signatures, Reiner says, even when presented with a design challenge. For example, two stone plinths on either side of the jetted air bath are designed with hidden, removable panels that access the motorization, which allowed them to customize a solution via an “almost brutalist” element. The bathroom was just one element of the duo’s multiyear project; Reiner White Design Studio collaborated on the architectural plans for the entire new construction project with Harrison Design. “We love the romance of collaboration,” White explains. “This is the perfect reflection of our aesthetic and their desires.”

DDING BRIGHTNESS AND A MODERN TOUCH WERE THE GOALS interior designer Alison Womack Jowers relayed to kitchen-and-bath designer Mary Kathryn Timoney, senior designer with Design Galleria Kitchen and Bath Studio, when it came time to renovate Womack Jowers’ personal master bathroom. “She just needed that lightness and that airiness,” says Timoney of the collaboration that would transform the fashion-forward interior designer’s space into something more indicative of her personality and design aesthetic. Neolith’s Calacatta surface, with its off-white and tan with gray veining, set the palette for the Buckhead bathroom renovation. The new layout retained the same footprint but appeared much larger, thanks to a new window placed behind the soaking tub and the creation of a curbless shower with Starphire glass. Bookmatching—in which adjoining surfaces mirror each other—allowed the slabs in the shower to appear more like art, Womack Jowers says. The vanity countertops are executed in the same Calacatta in a silk finish, while 27

the designers say the subtle shimmer of the mercury mirror on the linen cabinet played off the Neolith’s organic movement. The cabinet, which Womack Jowers spotted in the Design Galleria showroom, adds an armoire-like presence. The cabinet and two freestanding vanities with simple decorative “feet” allowed the furniture stay true to the home’s traditional nature. Adding a layered feel to this all-white beauty are textured elements, such as the Wolfgang chandelier with a fretwork design by Mr. Brown, as well as crisp finishing touches, such as the lacquered rectangular mirrors with rounded edges. Completing the look are jewelry-like statement details. Womack Jowers, for instance, paired white, acrylic horn pulls with polished-nickel cuffs from the Matthew Quinn Collection on the cabinetry. “It’s all about fine-tuning details, the tiny details,” she says of the pulls, which possess a subtle but elegant effect against the cabinets that are painted Farrow & Ball’s Shaded White. The joint effort fueled an appreciation for collaboration. “To be a part of doing something that not only made her space more beautiful, but also more of her signature—that was fun,” Timoney says.

JUDGES JULIA STAINBACK graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a Masters in Architecture and was awarded the AIA School Medal of the Henry Adams Fund. She received an undergraduate degree in Art History from Emory University and is one of the founding members of Stainback Hess Studio LLC, with more than 20 years of experience in residential design. MARC TYSON has more than 37 years in the construction industry, which includes 15 years in large commercial work and 22 years of residential construction. He has an electrical engineering degree from Southern Technical Institute and worked in defense electronics industry prior to entering the construction industry. In 1999, Tyson left the corporate world to focus on the residential market, both as a specialty subcontractor and as a builder. In 2004 his focus narrowed to the kitchen and bath arena, with an emphasis on cabinetry. He is an award-winning kitchen designer having participated in several Contractor of the Year awards with NARI and design competitions with the NKBA.

FOR FORMER NFL PLAYER Peter Boulware and his wife, Kensy, who are the busy parents of five, creating a place of refuge and relaxation was top of mind when it came to designing their lakeside home in Tallahassee, Florida. To complete their vision, they enlisted Birmingham, Alabama-based architect Jeffrey Dungan, joined by Atlanta interior designer Beth Webb. With the master suite tucked away from the rest of the house, the couple knew that they wanted an ultracalming master bath. “We wanted to create a bathroom that was simple and balanced and he would also feel quite at home in,” Dungan says. To take advantage of the home’s private, wooded location, a large bay window in front of the tub allows in natural light and provides views of the outdoors. Arabel Fabrics linen drapery provides softness, although, thanks to the home’s secluded location, “privacy is not an issue,” Webb notes. To foster a sense of cohesion, Dungan incorporated some of the same materials used in the rest of the house, including the room’s painted-wood wall boards, “which hold up quite well in bathrooms but also have a sense of the outdoors to them,” he says. Also nodding to nature is the room’s neutral palette, which creates a spa-like effect. “They’re really active as a family,” Webb says. “I think the whole vibe in the bath reflects the rest of the house. It’s light, bright, airy, calm and soothing.”

For the 2019 Luxury Living Show kitchen display, KINGDOM WOODWORKS’ Marcel Olariu channeled “an American Bistro look.” Playing into the desired aesthetic are elements such as white subway tile backsplashes with white oak floating shelves and polished nickel strapping on a streamlined rectangular hood. “The whole composition was rectilinear from top to bottom,” Olariu notes. A bold black honed quartzite island countertop with sharp edges and black steel-and-glass cabinet doors contribute to the masculine feel. Brass light fixtures and LED lighting solutions inside the cabinets add warmth while an oversized range completes the bistro-style effect.

THE BATH AND KITCHEN MARKET represents one quarter of the U.S. residential construction market, in terms of spending on products and materials, so which bath improvements deliver the biggest return on investment? Jere Metcalf, founding agent for Compass in Atlanta, shared the top elements for today’s dazzling baths. Bathrooms are more expansive, becoming big enough to incorporate a freestanding tub in the shower, encapsulated by a seamless wall of glass. Although bathroom sizes vary, depending on the size and price of the home, Metcalf says she’s seeing master bathrooms that are comparable to the size of the bedroom. “The bedroom needs to be beautiful, but the bathroom makes the statement,” she says. Overall spending on bathroom products in new construction and remodeling projects reached $78 billion in 2017, according to data from the National Kitchen & Bath Association. The top products are: flooring ($11.84 billion), showers ($11.82 billion),

$644 vanities ($9.78 billion), bathtubs ($9.69 billion) and countertops ($8.8 billion). Bold tile is a signature element as bathrooms gravitate to more contemporary, clean-lined spaces, Metcalf says. Wood, such as walnut or oak, is making a chic comeback as an accent. For countertops, marble remains a stylish choice, although some are selecting concrete. Growing in popularity is black, whether homeowners are using iron windows or using the color for the cabinets or an accent. “You might say black is the new gray,” she says.

DESIGNER EDITION INTERIOR DESIGNER CAROLE WEAKS is selling her Buckhead home of 35 years, a classic Georgian residence with renovations by longtime collaborator Spitzmiller & Norris. Built in 1946, the four-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bath home with a finished terrace level on Habersham Road was listed in May for $1.2 million. The interiors may be familiar because they have appeared on the pages of Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles, including a 1993 cover. “It has evolved into a more transitional style and it has adapted to our lifestyles as the years have gone by, from having a young child to having a teenager and then to being emptynesters,” says Weaks. Adjustments included enclosing the screened porch and opening it up to the den, as well as adding a breakfast area off the kitchen. The interiors feature a mix of pieces from eras, such as the 18th century, with contemporary sculpture and art. “I have loved—truly genuinely loved—living in that house. I love all the memories,” Weaks says. “But when it’s time to go, it’s time to go.” 56

Naomi Von Habersham WHEN IT COMES TO DRESSING FOR SUMMER, I aspire to be that stylish woman of the world who dons modish caftans and jeweled thong sandals made by Canfora in Capri, footwear which seems made to show off that chic coral polish on one’s toes. But so far, my intentions have yet to come true. The reality is that when temperatures swelter, all I can bare, I mean bear, to wear are loose-fitting linen or cotton tops over baggy linen drawstring pants. If my toes are pedicured, I might wear sandals, but more often than not, it’s espadrilles for me. I know it doesn’t sound particularly flattering, but when my summer days involve morning trips to Publix while the temperature is bearable or afternoon movies at the theater to escape the heat, dressing like Elizabeth Taylor in her Pucci caftans seems pointless. As little effort as I make on myself during the summer, I treat my home with far more attention. This summer, my patio seating will look its best with crisp, striped Sunbrella fabric edged in a contrasting welt. It’s a little sporty and nautical looking, which is the exact opposite of me. I’m also preparing for outdoor dining by replenishing my supply of pillar candles for use in my Amanda Lindroth cane hurricanes, which go so well with her woven place mats and her rattan bakeware. (If you can’t have a home in Harbour Island or Lyford Cay, you might as well entertain as though you do.) And I’m super excited about my latest purchase: a Dynatrap mosquito and insect trap. Let’s hope it works as well as they say it does. Meanwhile, there’s work to be done indoors, where I’ll switch out my candles and potpourri with a lighter, summery fragrance; oud and myrrh just won’t do when it’s 85 degrees outside. And I can’t wait to dress my bed in my latest indulgence: D. Porthault sheeting printed with blue seashells. Even if I don’t look my most attractive this summer, at least I know my home will.

GLOBAL FLAVORS AND INVENTIVE TECHNIQUES comprise the cuisine at Lazy Betty, the ambitious new restaurant from chef and partner Ron Hsu and chef de cuisine and partner Aaron Phillips. Two tasting menus (one seven-course and one 10-course) provide curated experiences for guests in the dining room and at the restaurant’s chef counter, while an à la carte menu offers a selection of starters, entrees and desserts for walk-in guests. Menu selections will include creations such as cauliflower “bone marrow” with onion marmalade, madras-spiced duck rillette, and “truffle hunt,” a casserole of potatoes, truffles, baby mushrooms and carrots. Though upscale (“dining fine,” Hsu calls it), Lazy Betty is far from pretentious; Hsu likens the experience to “one someone would have at their very cool and well-off uncle’s house—if your uncle had a world-class chef, a beautiful dining room, a great music selection and a butler to serve you.” Including a dining room that seats 28, a lounge area and an intimate chef counter—where the 10-course tasting menu is served—the space was designed by Atlanta architecture firm Praxis3 to feel both homey and industrial. “We believe in setting the tone for an environment that breeds positivity and love,” Phillips says. “We don’t just want to feed people’s bellies; we want to feed their thoughts.” lazybettyatl.com

Formal Flair SOLARIUM FRANCIE HARGROVE, FRANCIE HARGROVE INTERIOR DESIGN The mantel, limestone floors and plaster walls served as the impetus in the design of the elegant solarium. “I want rooms to feel captivating,” says designer Francie Hargrove. “The whole room should just make you want to linger.” A Susie Pryor peony painting captured her attention because of its texture, scale and palette, finding its home above the carved fireplace. In addition to peonies, Hargrove introduced mountain motifs, from embroidered fern draperies to pressed botanicals to antlers in her impeccably dressed space. The voluminous room allows geometric pieces, including the spheres that serve as the base for the glass-top coffee table, to remain in proportion with seating such as wing chairs and sofas in creamy tones. “There should never be one thing that makes a space,” she says. 66

Dose of Drama DINING ROOM STEPHANIE ANDREWS, BALANCE DESIGN The dining room's dark green walls, coral accents and touches of gold and brass took their cues from the room's tilework. Balance Design created a high-contrast space with massive elements like vertical panels painted by Steve McKenzie and an oversize gold chandelier. “We’re not afraid of bold and a little bit over the top,” says Stephanie Andrews, the firm’s founder. The serpent motif in the tile, which was designed by the homeowner, pushed the design toward Asian, with dragon ginger jars and chinoiserie napkins. Farrow & Ball’s Studio Green added to the intrigue as showhouse visitors questioned whether the walls were black, blue or green. The five-person team delivered a dining room experience with a focus on opposites, such as juxtaposing the antique table with modern chairs. “We love to collaborate, and so there’s more richness there than one note,” she says. Scenic Serenity MASTER BEDROOM + BATH JANIE WILBURN, THE JANE GROUP Designer Janie Wilburn honored the European château-style home and its setting by accentuating the existing paneling in her tailored master suite. “We were inspired by the house itself and its situation on the lake,” she says. Within the panels, she placed a scenic Cowtan & Tout grasscloth, Treasure Flower, depicting fish and lily pads in pale blue-green for a subtle yet sophisticated reference. A canopy of Cowtan & Tout silk carries the same luster and opalescence of the wallcovering, enveloping the bed in a smooth cocoon. So as not to compete with the pastoral view, a glass-and-metal light fixture designed by Robert A.M. Stern offered a modern interpretation of a gilt crystal chandelier. Pretty porcelains on Neolith mantel shelves pick up the shine of the marble floors, which continue into the bathroom. There, the freestanding sink with brass legs shares space with an antique vanity. “There was this beautiful harmony of modern and antique,” says Wilburn of the showhouse.

MCFADDEN LLC To play up the exquisite view, designer Yvonne McFadden started with a simple palette, pairing whites and blacks in varying shades throughout each intimate seating area. Having open-backed seating, tactile furniture and a collected feel to the accessories achieved a cohesive look. She embraced the color gifted by nature, using Perennials’ emerald green velvet fabric for the pillows. The patina and texture of the exterior, stone flooring and firepit were juxtaposed with clean-lined geometric pieces, such as Kolo Collection seashell chairs and custom coffee tables made of Neolith in the shape of interlocking puzzle pieces. Artistic Indulgence ENTRY FOYER WHITNEY RAY, WYETH RAY INTERIORS The entryway’s statement piece was a gift from the architect in the form of a two-story oculus serving as the home’s central axis. Within the dramatic eye, Wyeth Ray Interiors installed a Paul Ferrante galaxy gold chandelier over a skirted table and round rug. Soft white walls and trim served as a backdrop for black and white contemporary art in the marbled foyer. To give guests room to step back and appreciate the art, designer Whitney Ray chose credenzas and consoles with surfaces just deep enough to hold a selection of small art, antique books, sculpture and other oddities. Flint linen draperies provide columns of softness. “Instead of having a dark line that divides antiques from contemporary art, we try to layer the two together,” she says. 72

Lure of the Lake MUDROOM JAMIE MCPHERSON, J.ELLIOTT STYLE Instead of mountains, which often come to mind with Cashiers, designer Jamie McPherson was guided by the serenity of the surrounding Lake Glenville. A dark blue Thibaut grasscloth, drawn from the reservoir’s colors, provided the depth for his moody men’s den. McPherson had long admired a collection of antique fish prints at Toby West Antiques and showcased the dozen framed pieces as an art installation. Enamored by its misty aesthetic and the contrast between light and dark, McPherson found the mood he was looking to evoke in a painting of Lake Glenville by Andrea Costa; a collection of French transferware in blue plays off of the palette. “I tend to like to work in a color palette of greens and blues and natural colors,” he says. “It was very indicative of my overall style.” 73

Francophile Flair HALLWAY MEG HARRINGTON AND ANN HUFF, HUFF HARRINGTON HOME When the designers first saw the 19th-century chinoiserie commode in the south of France, “our hearts were pounding,” says Meg Harrington. “It was such a statement piece.” She and design partner Ann Huff built upon their desired Francophile aesthetic in the showhouse hallway with a mix of pieces from three centuries to fashion a space that encapsulates the joy of their shopping trips to Paris and Provence. Sassy brass chairs in a leopard print with a 1960s vibe flank a black commode, while a Louis Philippe mirror reflects a triple orchid. A 19thcentury painted barometer provides “crusty glam.” A series of playful Raymond Debieve mixed media on paper from the ’60s and ’70s delivered “magic on the walls,” said the purveyors of artful living. 74

Warm & Inviting KITCHEN AND BREAKFAST AREA SARA BROWN, SARA BROWN DESIGNS Designer Sara Brown brightened the breakfast area and kitchen to celebrate summer. “I wanted a fresh, whimsical and woodsy feel that would play off the surrounding landscape,” she says. Working with the existing cabinet color, she selected Neolith countertops and backsplash with warm gold veining and accessorized with large French-style pieces and brass bowls clearly arranged above the cabinets on opposite sides of the vent hood. She drew influences from nature for the feather pillow fabric, in shades of teal and blush, which is replicated with a hand-painted design on linen panels. Thanks to seating that includes a linen upholstered settee and brass and blush puffs, the breakfast space doubles as an area for conversations, cocktails and cards well into the day and evening.

Studied View UPSTAIRS OFFICE AND BALCONY LYNN MONDAY, MONDAY'S HOUSE OF DESIGN Cashiers, North Carolina-based designer Lynn Monday refreshed the office and adjacent balcony. “I decided to go with bars and books,” she says. A green velvet Cowtan & Tout wallcovering (which showhouse visitors couldn’t resist reaching out and touching) played up the warmth in the office, while a neutral upholstery in the form of sofas and a pair of chairs balanced the hue of the cabinets, bar and built-in bookshelves. To lend a contemporary edge to the rather traditional room, Monday added pattern and color via pillows and art; this theme extends to the fireside balcony, outfitted with an aged metal bar, concrete coffee table and stone urns. In both spaces, Monday achieved a repetition of color, shape and styles. “I think of my room as art,” she says.

Understated Elegance MAIN FLOOR GUEST BEDROOM DOUGLAS HILTON, DWH INTERIORS After designing a heavier, masculine room in the 2017 Cashiers Showhouse, Douglas Hilton tasnsitioned to a feminine, lighter atmosphere for tthe guest bedroom of the 2018 residence. “I played good angel, instead of my bad angel,” he says with a laugh. His love for layering pattern and strong figurative art, however, remained. The Christian Lacroix wallpaper in the bathroom, for example, resembles views from the house. Keeping with his motto that “furniture is art,” the black hand-hammered poster bed forms a cube within a cube in stark contrast to the blue and white French paneled walls. Maintaining a flowy, airy feel was a factor in his choice of drawer-free bedside tables. The blue silk bedding draws out the swallows on the roman shades, adding to the ethereal ambiance.

Pretty in Pink LADIES DRESSING ROOM AND UPSTAIRS BATH SANDE BECK, SANDE BECK DESIGN When designer Sande Beck, a mom of four boys, learned her space previously was a boys’ hangout room, she went in the opposite direction to capture the feel of bridal suite or women’s dressing room. Pink was the obvious choice for the grasscloth ceiling and hummingbird fabric and wallcovering by Thibaut. A French Provincial dresser from Scott Antique Markets provides the foundation for a Louis Philippe gold mirror. “I kept it pretty and feminine by balancing antiques with more updated pieces,” she says. She then added textures with linens, velvets and metals, such as antiqued gold and silver, in the chairs and stools. Beck is quick to point out that the showhouse was a family affair involving her mom, husband and sons. “It was such a treat,” she says. 79

Fanciful Frolic LAUNDRY ROOM AND OFFICE GRAYSON PRATT, GRAYSON PRATT INTERIORS Designer Grayson Pratt transformed existing cabinets into a showcase for toile Thibaut wallpaper in pink by selecting various scenes for each panel. “I love when I have an idea and then I look at the final result and I just squeal, ‘This is even better than I thought it would be!’” she says. For her first showhouse experience, she accepted the challenge of making over the large, windowless space into a multifunctional room. She draped pink Duralee fabric between the laundry room and office rooms for a feminine air and painted the walls a soft pink. “In my head, I was picturing it to be a woman’s escape,” she says. 80

Cheerful Charm UPSTAIRS GUEST ROOM SUSAN CURRIE, SUSAN CURRIE DESIGN Designer Susan Currie envisioned guests arriving for a summer getaway and throwing open the balcony doors. “I wanted to make a space that was a cheerful guest room for someone to enjoy the mountain view,” she says. Inspired by Palm Beach Regency style, she draped the bed wall in pink and green. Thibaut’s Honshu print, a current take on chinoiserie, pops up again as the duvet. “I loved using bright colors and vintage furnishings, mixed white textiles and furniture to balance my use of bold colors,” she says.

EARTHY EUROPEAN KITCHEN ■ MEREDITH MCBREARTY Designer Meredith McBrearty envisioned the kitchen as a cheerful and inviting hub with European farmhouse flair. With the bonus of serving as the showhouse’s spec representative, McBrearty selected many of the finishes, which meant adding slats and beams by Authentic Reclaimed Flooring to the vaulted ceiling to embrace the scale of the space while fostering warmth. A spacious island is ideal for a laid-back evening of cooking and entertaining friends. “When I think of a house at Serenbe, I think of it as a getaway,” McBrearty says. Accessories in earth tones, like the mounted horns and mortar and pestles from Robuck, provide depth. “You have to get beautiful pieces that make the space sing,” says McBrearty. —Grace Donnelly

Anna-Louise Wolfe leaned into her dressy style for the main dining space. “I am traditional, therefore I thought, ‘Why not go ahead and do a skirted table and pretty china?” she says. She overlaid ikat fabric with a print of branches, birds and flowers that exuded a country farmhouse feel, underneath Ginori dinnerware. Aviary motifs in the monogrammed napkins and bookcase accessories join earthy elements, such as rattan chargers and bamboo flatware. Wolfe played off the white shiplap and butler’s pantry cabinets painted Benjamin Moore’s Kitty Gray by lining the bookshelves with blue grasscloth. Chairs covered in blue leopard print and casual linen check treatments demonstrate Wolfe’s fondness for pattern, also found in the porcelain and boxes, and the antiqued mirror finish on the iron sconces in the butler’s pantry. For a turn of the head, she commissioned Mary Carpenter to create a contemporary acrylic work of art that offset the traditional and country choices. —Lori Johnston

WOOTEN INTERIORS Designer Anna Wooten Loggins highlighted original artwork in the foyer and upstairs landing, anchoring the halls with a Phillip Jeffries grasscloth wallpaper. Black accents create a high-impact look in these intimate spaces. “The art is contemporary and the colors are contemporary, so I really wanted to mix in some older elements,” Loggins says. Adding in antique touches—like the Persian rug in the foyer and 19th-century industrial pendant upstairs—Loggins deftly constructed a compelling intersection of old and new in these transitional areas. To keep her compact spaces from feeling too heavy or crowded, she leaned on neutral fabrics, playing with textures rather than patterns, and used high-contrast, solid black window treatments to draw the eye toward the natural beauty just outside the windows. —Grace Donnelly 88

She envisioned the homeowner listening to Luciano Pavarotti or Andrea Bocelli in a calming environment with spaces to read in the recliner or work at the Beau Studio walnut table without distraction. “It’s very Zen. That, to me, is what Serenbe is,” she says. The herringbone pattern of the Thibaut wallpaper played into the organic nature of the community. Freeing the space of clutter and tchotchkes allowed pieces such as the bell-shaped Swedish clock and a hand-painted Italian chest from William Word Fine Antiques to get their due. —Lori Johnston 91

STYLISH SALON GUEST SUITE ■ REBECCA CARTWRIGHT and ALICIA HELD-MORRIS, R. CARTWRIGHT DESIGN Inspired by Serenbe’s diverse, cultured community and the showhouse’s emphasis on original artwork, this guest suite serves as a French salon getaway for the creative woman. To make the space “feel collected, not decorated,” designers Rebecca Cartwright and Alicia Held-Morris relied heavily on antique furnishings, including a settee with a refurbished Ralph Lauren cushion, a Belgium chest and alabaster floor lamp. Combined with modern pieces, including a concrete mirror and a vintage-inspired custom campaign table from Aronson Woodworks, the mix of old and new elements creates a bohemian flavor. Vibrant stitched art made from deconstructed silk textiles by Debra Smith, placed in the bathroom and on two walls of the bedroom, inspired the layering of fabric and textures, which resulted in a sculptural aesthetic. —Grace Donnelly 92

FORMAL AND FREEING MASTER BEDROOM ■ GRETCHEN GILSTRAP EDWARDS, GILSTRAP EDWARDS INTERIOR DESIGN As soon as designer Gretchen Gilstrap Edwards encountered Casamance’s Nuee fabric, she thought of Serenbe’s lush foliage. Used for master suite draperies, the textiles provided the starting point for this relaxing retreat. Luxe bedding pulls deep purple and gold accents from the drapery while—in contrast to how she might style a typical in-town Atlanta home—Edwards played with a simplified palette and textures like the sisal rug. “I wanted it to reflect the appreciation of nature and to be calming and peaceful,” she says. Touches like the reading chair create a welcoming retreat. Pairing contemporary art in the bedroom and bathroom with traditional pieces such as the upholstered Bernhardt bed and antique side tables lends an updated feel to the period furnishings. —Grace Donnelly 94

BOHO BEAUTY POWDER ROOM ■ JULIE HOLLOWAY, JULIE HOLLOWAY STUDIO The powder room is a snapshot of Julie Holloway’s signature style, mixing Bohemian vintage with hints of country and modern touches for a look that nestles comfortably in the organic landscape of Serenbe. “I spend a lot of time there, so I feel that I really understand the vibe,” Holloway says. “I wanted it to be welcoming, warm, informal and definitely not stuffy.” The John Muir Tribute Tree print, which Holloway says echoes the streetlamps in Serenbe, sets the tone for a natural atmosphere and plays off the scale of the large powder room. The Dune Stripe Schumacher window treatments and the vintage rug add a charming contrast to the buffalo check chair and Kate Spade lamp. —Shannon Dominy

NATURAL ELEMENTS FRONT AND SIDE PORCH ■ MELISSA GALT, MELISSA GALT INTERIORS “I wanted it to feel like you were in the woods, surrounded by nature and a part of nature,” says designer Melissa Galt of the covered side porch. Custom leaf-patterned steel screens separate the space from neighbors, while maintaining a connection to the garden area. Sofas and chairs from Kannoa reminded Galt of bird’s nests, and the blue rug evokes the raindrops that echo off the tin roof. To balance a mix of materials for “visual and physical texture,” Galt chose a custom table constructed from glass, wood and metal to pull all the elements together. SWEET RETREAT GUEST SUITE ■ KATE LIGHT, K LIGHT INTERIORS Designer Kate Light’s take on the classic bedtime story Goodnight Moon combined youthful elements with polished pieces for an elegant but accessible guest suite. The fabric by Georgia artist Lulie Wallace for the window treatments inspired the palette and floral motif for Light’s “goodnight blooms” room. Centered around a custom daybed and inspired by the wild blossoms of Serenbe, the versatile space is balanced by layered textures and patterns. Abstract accents, such as Lindsay Cowles wallpaper on the ceiling, are juxtaposed with the rich texture of the rose-hued Lee Jofa mohair daybed fabric. A colorful work of art “shows that just because it’s a children’s room, it doesn’t mean you can’t use sophisticated art,” she says. The pair selected natural details—like tobacco leaves and antlers in an antique wooden bowl—and textures from the wicker and linen drapery to bring in Serenbe’s beauty. “Our biggest goal is to never have a room that feels decorated. WARM BLUES LIVING ROOM ■ JANIE HIRSCH, J. HIRSCH INTERIOR DESIGN Designer Janie Hirsch eschewed formality to create an atmosphere of warmth and comfort that was conducive to conversation. She drew on the textures of trees, woods and grass by using Thibaut’s Palampore Leaf wallcovering, a faux-wood print chair from Century Furniture, an Oushak rug and mixed media and collage on wood by Ashley Wingo. To maintain a calm and inviting look, Hirsch sprinkled in color with art and accessories, such as the accent color from inside of the French writing desk. She also wanted to draw from the feeling of togetherness that Serenbe embodies. “That sense of community to me means gathering. This room feels like a place you can gather and sit and enjoy each other’s company,” she says. —Shannon Dominy

OUTDOOR ELEGANCE POOL DECK ■ STEFAN ALEXANDER, STEFAN ALEXANDER INTERIORS “I was really trying to create an interior living room that happens to be outside,” says designer Stefan Alexander of Stefan Alexander Interiors and Peter Block Architects. The spacious, wooded pool deck offers distinct sitting areas and a dining area, and Alexander broke it up into usable zones. The designer embraced antiques, such as a dolphin side table, as well as new pieces, including one of his paintings, an Art Deco-style patio set and a vintage Italian table. MITCHELL GINN & ASSOCIATES, FLORALIS GARDEN DESIGN AND MAC MCKINNEY, MCKINNEY BUILDERS Architect Mitch Ginn, builder Mac McKinney and landscape architecture firm Floralis Garden Design shaped an inviting, rustic farmhouse with multiple porches and meandering pathways. “The house is nestled in its natural environment,” says Bray. The board-and-batten exterior, stone and a metal roof bring together readily found materials for a home in the west Georgia woods, says Ginn. Floralis juxtaposed the clean architecture with natural and native plantings, such as tea olives, gardenias and azalea, that referenced Serenbe’s loose and wild landscape, with a pea gravel path connecting the spaces. Three covered areas on the main level and a lower-level patio, which led to a lap pool and stone terrace, encouraged showhouse visitors to mingle and talk, Ginn adds. The design-build team sought to blend with nature and Serenbe’s tight-knit community. “The people that have moved here, everybody’s like pioneers,” McKinney says. “They want to get to know each other and socialize together.” —Lori Johnston 107

LOVELY LAKE GENEVA
Alpine chalets and majestic mountains may define the landscape of Switzerland, but uniquely picturesque views abound along its serene and scenic lakeshores Written by CAROLYN O’NEIL
WHILE THE MIGHTY snow-covered Alps often get top billing, Switzerland is home to more than 1,500 postcard-perfect lakes. Carved and fed by glacier water, these sparkling clear lakes attract swimmers, boaters and beauty seekers. Crescent-shaped Lake Geneva, known as Lac Léman, is the largest of the Swiss lakes with busy Geneva on one end and Montreux of summer jazz festival fame at the other. In summer, Belle Epoque paddle steamers offer transport from another era, passing medieval castles and grand hotels while gracefully cutting through the glistening waters between ports of call. Sidewalk cafés are filled with diners taking in the view; 110
cyclists climb shoreline roads; hikers walk trails past fields of wildflowers; and wine growers work on hilly lakeside vineyards. The UNESCO World Heritage Lavaux vineyards on Lake Geneva welcome visitors with tasting rooms and winery tours. The principal grape grown is Chasselas, which makes a range of white wines from delicate and floral to rich and full-bodied. It pairs beautifully with fresh fish caught in the lake, such as the tiny perch served at local bistro Le Major Davel, among others, in the quaint village of Cully. Wine lovers take special note: The spectacular monthlong winegrowers festival called Fête des Vignerons 2019 takes place
in Vevey this summer and happens only once every 20 years. Historically, Lake Geneva’s “Swiss Riviera” has attracted the rich and famous. Richard Burton, Audrey Hepburn, David Bowie and Freddie Mercury had homes here, and Charlie Chaplin spent his final years in Vevey where there is a much-photographed statue of him along the lakeside promenade. Fans can visit Chaplin’s World museum and buy chocolates in the shape of the shoes of “The Little Tramp” at Swiss chocolate maker Läderach. A different walk or run through history is presented at The Olympic Museum in Lausanne, headquarters of the Interna-

ANGUILLA REDUX THE ISLAND OF ANGUILLA, a self-governing British Territory about the the size of Manhattan, is known for both hospitality and conviviality. A TALE OF TWO REGIONS
BA-HA-BAH. That’s where we went on vacation last summer and where I took the equivalent of a graduate program in linguistics while trying to navigate my way through the crowded tourist town. At the airport, they told us that one must “use the blinkah when you’re in the cah,” and that “Maine has the best lobstah chowdah in the summah.” However, they also said that they like to eat “paster after going to yoger class.” I have yet to understand why they drop the “r” from words that end in “r” but add it to ones that don’t. Maybe their fathahs couldn’t speak very well after drinkin’ all that wicked Boston beeah. Mainers frequently look down their long patrician noses with great disdain for the South and our drawls. They might find us a bit daft and thick-headed, but we can pull up to a farm stand and order our peaches, and tomatas safe in the knowledge that the only butchering that will occur is the one in the kitchen and not in our mispronunciation of said fruits. 120
I’m venturing out to the Cape this summer with the übertalented and enormously entertaining Southern architect Jeffrey Dungan, and there’s some concern that the locals might not understand our banter. I’m Southern by birth and live in Los Angeles, and Jeff is born and bred from Lower Alabama. We’re just gonna tell the year-roundahs that we’re both from L.A. and let them try to figure out what that means. Additionally and most disappointingly, we’ve accepted the fact that there will not be any pimiento cheese, grits or fried okra to sustain us, so I guess we’ll have to buck up to plates of fresh lobster, crab and scallops while we’re there. With regard to the architectural panel discussion, whether one pronounces the foyer as a Southerner or a Parisian, it will not be described like the pedestrian Maine description of “dooryard.” Jeff’s wit is as quick as his ability to envision a new house, so the Sox fans better be on their game when the 2018 Shutze Award winner takes the stage: He’s one wicked pissah.
