Posts by the Atlanta-based architect chronicle classically minded projects from the drawing board to construction and completion.

EVERY JULY, THIS ISSUE provokes the urge to undergo a massive home renovation. At this point in the year, we’ve installed and unloaded not just our Southeastern De-

We’ve also scoured key trade shows; culled through dozens of bath contest entries; and are currently walking construction sites with various tradesmen for our upcoming showhouse projects (one at the Serenbe community this fall, and another in Buckhead for our annual Home for the Holidays event this winter). The amount of artistry and craftsmanship, ideas and innovations we feature on the pages of this magazine are of course designed to inspire, but as I can personally attest to,

WHITE INTERLUDE Robin Burnett Design mixes limestone and brass in a light Buckhead bathroom Photography by LACEY SOMBAR

D

esigner Robin Burnett typically saves French limestone for pool decks and mantels, but decided to introduce the luxurious material into a master bathroom—with spectacular results. It married the traditional design of the Buckhead home while providing an energetic spark for the bathroom makeover. “The French limestone was the very first thing we chose,” she says. Classic tongue and groove fit with the architecture but allowed Burnett to pop in transitional elements among the homeowner’s cravings for light and natural materials. The slightly oversize and honed limestone, from Francois & Co., in both the shower and main floor areas masked delineation points in the long, linear bathroom. To further minimize the transition, handcrafted, irregular ceramic subway tile was framed to the ceiling in the shower (outfitted with a tripod oak stool from the Barbara Westbrook Collection). 19

In a niche by the freestanding Olivia tub, artwork by Clay McLaurin fades from royal blue to robin’s egg. “Bathrooms are places where we’re placing great art and pieces that we’re going to enjoy while we’re getting ready and relaxing,” she says. Burnett and her clients, Rick and Angela Fierer, then pulled out the blue, gray and aubergine colors found in the depth of the Paris Gray limestone. The paintings and a patterned window treatment didn’t sacrifice tranquility, she says. “Feeling a sense of peace in the space really is important to me, and I think important to a lot of my clients,” Burnett says. The green and aubergine in the honed Calacatta Viola marble countertops stand out, and aubergine also was used on transom-topped French doors. Oversize shagreen mirrors, Lucite and brass hardware and sconces draw in light to make a narrow space appear larger. “Shagreen has an interesting texture. It also has brass detailing on it,” Burnett says, of the mirrors. “I just loved how that pulled color and finishes together.”

I

would do another bathroom in a heartbeat like this,” says designer Shawn Amtower. From dressy details to ingenuity in layout, the Vinings master retreat exudes a calming confidence. The bathroom’s redesign created space for a freestanding Victoria + Albert tub and a spacious steam shower with double doors, to the delight of homeowners Debbie and Mitchell Brannen. Amtower turned a hallway used as closet spillover space into a makeup vanity area with custom cabinetry that can be closed off behind pocket doors. Meanwhile, Italian porcelain tile with soft taupes and bluish grays on a cream background wraps from the shower walls to the ceiling. It was the first time Amtower has used large-format tile on the bathroom floors, not just in the shower. “When you walk in, that faint pattern on the floor, along with the drapery speaks in a very calming way,” she says. With the thick grout lines, the tile had the appearance of one big marble floor. The drapery is one of her signature elements, and here, Amtower used satin linen Romo fabric in a silvery gray hung from tracks recessed in the ceiling. Oversize acrylic pulls and traditional nickel and crystal sconces appear elegant without being too slick. Amtower also included thin detailing on the custom cabinetry and removed traditional moldings. However, thick white quartz countertops and a waterfall shower bench with mitered edges lent weight without feeling overdone. “It’s very simple, but when you’re standing in the space, everything is so luxurious,” she says.

very bathroom needs a big idea. For designer Lorraine Enwright, it was her plan for dramatic walls with vertical tile and floating vanities that would give her travel-savvy homeowners that same sleek and modern style they appreciated in hotels and resorts around the world. “My approach really is about form and accenting it,” she says. Every design decision, including the polished chrome fixtures and quartzite countertops with a thick edge, were simpatico with its new clean and crisp style. Enwright and Chris Donnelly of Brookside Custom Homes worked in partnership that she says paired her ideas with Donnelly’s eye for detail. 31

They transformed the once-dark bathroom with a rarely used tub into a light-filled space with a statement shower, flanking vanities and bright tiled surfaces. “Then we used the big mirrors to reflect the light and also to help it feel bigger,” she says. “It feels very bright—even in the shower.” A must-have goal was “functional enjoyment,” she says, for the busy homeowners. Low-maintenance choices included raising the vanities, which had veneer with a charcoal gray stain, and using large format porcelain tile for the floors. A custom chrome console keeps the room feeling light and airy. The reconfigured layout included placing a no-glass shower, with pebble marble tile floors for an organic and spa-like quality, partially behind the elevated vanity and accent wall. The large-scale tile on the floors contrasted with the slim Porcelanosa tiles in charcoal grays, bronze and whites lit by chrome sconces. “I’m always playing with composition in the forms of what you’re seeing,” she says. The Dolomite porcelain floors and soft, billowy window treatment that filtered the natural light joined with the accent walls in a bathroom that achieved a mixture of drama and intimacy.

CLASSIC CHIC Kingdom Woodworks’ Marcel Olariu had New York-meets-Southern glamour in mind for the Luxury Living Show kitchen, outfitting the display with brushed brass accents, balanced proportions and high-gloss paint colors that were custom blended by Kingdom Woodworks. “I wanted to kind of bring it back South, specifically with the light color finish on the kitchen perimeter and then the two-tone where the island is a darker gray color,” says Olariu.

P

resented by Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles at Phipps Plaza in February, the 2018 Luxury Living Show highlighted the latest gamechangers and must-haves in kitchen, bath and outdoor categories. From LED-illuminated kitchen drawers and backlit vanity mirrors to cleverly concealed storage solutions and hardwearing (but glam) surfaces, there was no shortage of inspiring details and stylish statements, thanks to the talents of Kingdom Woodworks, Studio Entourage, Glazer Design & Construction, Dove Studio and Floralis Garden Design.

FUNCTIONAL DETAILS Among the kitchen’s clever storage solutions are a hidden pantry and a walnut platform pullout, which was installed below the Wolf coffee maker as a landing spot for multiple (or hot), mugs. Kingdom Woodworks outfitted all of the drawers wih LED lighting and the cabinetry with walnut interiors, which contrast with the exterior’s soft white finish and the white Cambria countertops. “There’s that play of contrast between colors that works really well. Those are the kind of things I constantly like to play with and combine different tones of color,” says Olariu.

“I tried to create a space where EVERYTHING IS BALANCED, left and right. All of that was very CAREFULLY CALCULATED and METICULOUSLY DESIGNED.” —Marcel Olariu

PERFECT PROPORTIONS Freezer drawers below the steam oven are seamless with the rest of the cabinetry for a look that’s symmetrical and balanced. Detailed proportion was a main focus for Olariu when designing the cabinetry, particularly the custom design on the glass doors and the olive-knuckle brass hinges. “I have an architectural degree, so for me proportion, size, aesthetic is extremely important,” he says. 47

SOPHISTICATED SLEEK Along with Randy Glazer of Glazer Design & Construction, designer Jane Hollman of Studio Entourage combined modern sophistication with earthy touches to create a spa-like bath display. LED-backlit vanity mirrors were used in place of sconces, and inky waterfall countertops from Compac offer the look of marble but are actually made from durable quartz. Complementary ebony oak cabinetry by Mast Custom Cabinetry showcases custom, geometric hardware in a polished nickel finish, which was designed in partnership with Wilde Hardware. A faux-fur vanity stool adds contemporary glamour.

“The hope was to CREATE A SPACE that would make the discerning in-town client FEEL SURROUNDED by QUALITY TOUCHES and SOPHISTICATION while having the TEXTURES and TONES feel incredibly RELAXING.” —Jane Hollman IN THE DETAILS A walk-in shower display at the Luxury Living Show feels ultraspacious thanks to steel-framed glass windows from Atlanta Glass & Mirror. Additional luxurious touches include multiple showerheads and a pair of marble waterfall benches. The shower walls are made from slabs of off-white, pearlized Neolith, creating an airy effect that contrasts with the moodier scheme of the rest of the bath. 50

LEISURELY LUXE A rectangular tub from MTI boasts a glossy, custom finish and rests in front of a gas fireplace for a relaxing retreat that’s both cozy and sleek. The fireplace surround was composed of solid Neolith panels in a concrete finish. “It really makes a statement by having a large-format material with custom designed seams,” says Hollman. The chandelier is by Hinkley Lighting.

OUTDOOR OASIS In the outdoor kitchen display, Dove Studio elevated the outdoor cooking experience with durable Neolith countertops, NatureKast cabinetry and top-of-the-line Hestan appliances. A Blaze aluminum kamado and a Kudu outdoor grill provide additional options for outdoor cookouts, while a galley sink ensures easy meal prep and cleanup. Landscaping by Floralis Garden Design includes dark Hartstone floors and artificial turf, which were installed by Maxwell Gardens. Container plantings add additional life to the area.

BARS, BREWERIES AND RESTAURANTS are popping up atop new and reimagined buildings, giving Atlantans more places to take in the city’s changing skyline. OVERDRIVE LOUNGE opened in April at one of the city’s newest hotels, Solis Two Porsche Drive, with unique views: runways at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and the track at the Porsche Experience Center. In Poncey-Highland, Hotel Clermont’s reopening includes a rooftop with a food cart and bar. The bar and TINY LOU’S, a FrenchAmerican brasserie in The Clermont, are overseen by Indigo Road hospitality group, which also operates O-Ku, Donetto, Colletta and Oak Steakhouse. In the Old Fourth Ward, NEW REALM BREWING COMPANY’s crowd convenes on the 3,000-square-foot rooftop patio with views of the city and the BeltLine’s Eastside Trail. The brewery opened earlier this year in Common Ground, a former Western Electric Co. facility redeveloped by Third & Urban. More developers are planning to use the top of their buildings, including the pool at the planned NOBU HOTEL ATLANTA at Phipps Plaza and West Midtown’s STAR METALS ATLANTA, a mixed-use project that includes a 7,000-square-foot rooftop bar and restaurant.

ADAC’S SIX NEW SHOWROOMS and showroom expansions have brought the 550,000-square-foot design center to 98 percent occupancy. Newcomers and existing tenants with larger spaces include Delinah Simmons, Made Goods, Kolo Collection, Sutherland Perennials Studio, SHOWROOM 58 and Dolce Decor, the first U.S. showroom from the mother-and-son team of Atlantans Regina Storino and Michael Gibbs. Dee Simmons, designer and owner of Delinah Simmons, says her new flagship showroom will introduce collections and lines by global companies such as India’s Orvi Stone; Londonbased Jason D'Souza Fabrics; upholstery and case goods by Eric Kuster out of the Netherlands; and TFG, an Italian bed linen line. “With some of my travels, I brought in some lines internationally that have never been in America,” she says. Simmons, who also has her own rug and textile line, says that she’s amazed to see more showrooms with hard surfaces at ADAC, which she says speaks to the interest in using design details that go beyond the standard look into kitchens and bathrooms, as new construction and renovation activity increases. “The industry has really picked up again. It’s full throttle,” she says. Surrounded by other showrooms at ADAC, Simmons says there’s “continuous inspiration” for her and her clients.

AROUND TOWN WITH

Naomi Von Habersham

Ǥ Ǥ I’M ABOUT TO EMBARK ON A MASTER BATHROOM renovation, and I’m bursting with excitement. The 1970s-era wallpaper that graces my bathroom walls will soon be history, its hodgepodge of birds and multicolored plants relegated to the trash heap. So, too, with the decades-old, builder-grade tile floor and the sliding-glass shower doors, whose tracks are nearly impossible to keep clean. My new bathroom will be a sybaritic paradise, at least compared to what I’ve had. Marble tile and countertop, bath fittings imported from England, a heated floor and a heated towel rack, a comfort-height toilet, and an honest-to-goodness vanity are just some of the upgrades I’m making. Once the work is finished, I envision myself lollygagging in the bath for an hour each day and spending quality time at my vanity, artfully making up my eyes and contouring my face à la Kim K. It’s a lovely thought, but I fear I’m going to have to retrain myself first. The reality is I spend all of 10 minutes on my makeup, and I treat bathing as something to do quickly and efficiently rather than an exercise in relaxation. If I want to spend more time in my fancy new bathroom, perhaps I should treat it as a workplace. That’s what Waldo Lydecker, the acid-tongued columnist in the 1944 movie, Laura, did. He typed his articles while submerged in bathwater, on a typewriter suspended over the tub. Why, he even remained in his bath while a police detective questioned him about the title character’s murder! I don’t want that experience, but perhaps I should consider drafting this very column while lounging in bubbles. And if I ever want to look as good as Joan Collins, who is something of a hero to me because she looks fabulous at 84 years old, I’m going to have to park myself at my new vanity and spend some serious time on my face. It could even help me land a much younger husband, like Joan did, which will mean my bathroom renovation was money well spent.

FTER GETTING HIS START at New York’s Le Bernardin and serving as executive chef at Murphy’s and Morningside Kitchen for nearly seven years, chef Ian Winslade opened his own original concept, Mission + Market, at Three Alliance Center this spring, taking inspiration from the West Coast and creating a fresh but dynamic menu. “I’ve always been inspired by things that are highly perishable and very delicate,” says Winslade. Expect light, seafood-forward dishes and plenty of vegetables, with global-inspired flavors. “I use a lot of different flavors—I pull from Japanese, from Thai; I sort of globalize the food,” Winslade adds. Designed by Tony Akly of Restaurants Consulting Group, the restaurant’s breezy, clean-lined atmosphere matches the lightness of its cuisine. Upon entry, guests are greeted with a living-moss wall, crushed-velvet upholstery, soaring ceilings and floorto-ceiling windows. An eight-seat chef’s counter offers front-row views of the kitchen, and a sprawling patio with fire pits and ceiling fans makes dining alfresco an option from spring through fall. “I want people to be surprised when they come in,” says Winslade. “We’re trying to transport you somewhere else, through flavor, through the physical shell of the restaurant and through the fact that we’re trying very hard to do something that is different and that is new.” missionandmarketatl.com

The fabric’s warm yellow and green hues, along with a travertine pedestal table, French rush seat settee and Provençal chairs, evoke the mountain setting. Antique rugs add softness among hard surfaces that include tile backsplash and Neolith island countertops in a waterfall effect. She incorporated pillows in Rose Tarlow linen weave fabric and bright accents with Scavo glass vases in her calming spaces. “I wanted to maintain the natural warmth of the area, but because it is ‘in town,’ I hoped to present a classic, elegant and light feel as well,” she says. —Shannon Dominy

reamy landscapes are tempered by a serene, soft palette in the master bedroom and bath. Cashiers designer Lynn Monday of Lynn Monday Home created an enchanting setting in the bedroom with flowing bed draperies in Cowtan & Tout fabric. “I wanted it to be romantic, with homage to the mountains,” says Monday. The repeating geometric patterns on the Cowtan & Tout fabric used for the window treatments are also found in the master bath and the antique rug, which creates a cohesive, polished retreat. esigner Shon Parker channeled the 1920s Great Camp style of the Vanderbilts and Rockefellers—with a dash of dapper flair—by combining antiques and vintage pieces he collected throughout the years, such as an Eastlake deerhead spot table and coffee table by Barney Bellinger. Describing the style as “like a tux and formal ball gown in the woods,” Parker used the clean lines of Pindler’s Reese Evening print wallpaper as a fresh background for bold, mixed frames, antlers and vintage items. A wing chair—upholstered in a Ralph Lauren plaid fabric and black Schumacher trim—and a vintage train headlight are pieces he designed custom for the Cashiers showhouse. —Shannon Dominy 70

Throughout the room, muted neutrals mix with coral and blue highlights. Wolfe sprinkled in chinoiserie accents, like the black lacquer bed tray from Parc Monceau and the antique blanc de chine figurine on the bedside table. In the foyer, floor-to-ceiling draperies in a vivid green envelop the room with the richness of nature, evoking a “warm feeling as soon as you walk through the doors,” says the Alabama-based designer. The drama of the opulent fabric imparts maximum impact on the tiny room. Oversize artwork by Huntsville, Alabama, artist Stephanie Schamban depicts pyracantha and adds a brightness, color and warmth that complements the Oushak rug and Everett armchairs. Paula Jones THE SUMMER HOUSE / BACK PORCH “

L

ight and bright” was the mantra for the back porch of Birch Cottage. Designer Paula Jones of The Summer House in Highlands drew inspiration from the artwork by Marilyn Sparks that sits above the fireplace. Intending for the porch to function as an extension of the interior spaces, Jones found it was the perfect size for a sectional. The designer also incorporated plenty of seating, as she envisioned residents and guests gathering for a “peaceful getaway after a day’s hike or playing golf and enjoying the beautiful mountains.” An octagonal coffee table with curved legs offers a spot for drinks and snacks. Vibrant floral pillows complete the naturally influenced look.

love when I can use silk and barn tin in the same room,” says Cashiers designer Maxine Sikes. In the open family room and dining room, she found inspiration in silk drapes and the bobbin chairs’ silk-embroidered appliqué. While their palette and design lean mountain traditional, the furnishings and lighting took a transitional turn with silver barn tin covering side tables and leather recliners featuring a crocodile accent with nail heads. A coffee table with an aged zinc top and a black walnut dining table, inset with silver tin, were handmade by Sikes’ company, The Global Craftsman. n the kitchen, Kingdom Woodworks’ Marcel Olariu drew inspiration from the home’s mountain environs, incorporating textured and organic elements for a space that felt comfortable and connected to nature. The hood, for instance, features a band of light oak that showcases accents of gray—achieved with a wire brush—to give off the appearance of raw wood. This material is carried through on to the kitchen island for balance. “We emphasized the texture in that wood,” says Olariu. “When you run the wire brush along the wood grain, it creates these deeper pockets that catch the glaze and add texture.” Kingdom Woodworks also incorporated open shelving for a more casual look. “I thought about somebody coming into these kitchens and using them on a daily basis,” says Olariu. “How easy would it be to have floating shelves and everything’s readily available? The concept there is to make the whole space more casual and inviting.” —Claire Ruhlin 79

n her showhouse debut, June Chamberlain navigated the entryway with her signature mix of traditional furniture and modern artwork, and a neutral, monochromatic palette that wouldn’t clash with nearby rooms. A Pam Moxley mixed-media piece captures visitors’ attention, placed over a classic chest with a concave design by Beau Studio. Chamberlain used bits of pale gold, salmon, ivory and brown pulled from the Oushak rug in the accessories and framed art. The cottage’s architecture lends itself to a clean aesthetic with modern touches. “I just wanted it to be a calm introduction,” says the Atlanta designer. rancie Hargrove’s plan for a soft, serene master bedroom began with a mountain landscape and cool colors of the Blue Ridge Mountains. “When I saw that painting, I melted,” she says. “It had enough impact without being overpowering.” The painting dictated the neutral palette, which Hargrove says resembles an oyster shell. A tall headboard, carved wood bedside tables, light blue lamps and framed hand-colored botanicals from Italy filled out the respite. “I chose the peony and the iris because they bloom so beautifully up here,” says the Cashiers-based designer. A monogrammed appliqué provides a personal touch to the bedding without being overly embellished. In the bath, custom draperies and framed artwork pair with a custom antler chandelier glazed gray to pull out the hues of the patterned contemporary floors.

Each piece—including the green, antique iron bed, Brunschwig & Fils upholstery, antique Swedish painted chest and artwork—was chosen with purpose. The pitched ceiling perfectly suited the late 19th-century French bed, but Mooney envisioned a multifunctional space with a desk at the window for writing, a chair for reading and relaxing, and a bed for resting (with an antique doll and a dog bed at its foot). Combined with brass accessories and nearly 20 pieces of artwork, these elements showcase Mooney’s signature traditional-meets-livable style. —Lori Johnston 87

tlanta-based Pineapple House Interior Design’s bedroom took a daring turn with nearly black walls. The intent was to illustrate how wonderfully drama and peace can coexist through rich, deep tones, and show that a pale palette is not a necessity in every room, say the designers. The visual impact of the walls, painted Benjamin Moore’s Fatigue Green, influenced the “clever, classy casual” space. The Liz O’Brien shell chandelier in plaster resin sought to stimulate the imagination amid a feeling of comfort and beauty. Here, a plush sofa and chairs with transitional styling elevate the porch into a space for socializing or quiet reflection. Known for using a soft palette, Womack planted bits of color, including ochre in the Kravet pillow fabric and Marcy Gregg’s abstract artwork and a blue lacquered coffee-table top made by JP McChesney. “I wanted a huge splash in the center of the room,” she says. “The blue was definitely more intense. ostalgia and whimsy combined for a joyous bedroom design by Joan Anderson. Years ago, a client bought Anderson the teacher edition of a Dick and Jane reader from the 1900s, knowing the designer would find use for its oversized pages. Faced with blank showhouse walls, Anderson saw enough space for nine framed prints of Dick, Jane and Spot. The prints envelop the room, and Anderson plucked shades of pink and orange from the pages to use for her playful palette. In the bathroom, colors from the book appeared as brushstrokes in the lively wallpaper from Pierre Frey. Jim Thompson fabrics for the bedroom curtains and retro-style chairs add to the happy ambiance. “This was probably the most whimsical room I’ve done in any showhouse here,” she says. —Lori Johnston 99

n the powder room, Melissa Knott’s rustic Thibaut vinyl wallpaper—which was unexpected among the white shiplap elsewhere in the cottage—mimics the look of wood and serves as a fitting backdrop to the country cozy pieces, including a cow painting by Dawne Raulet, a galvanized mirror and a zinc ice box. She positioned an antique tobacco drying rack underneath a small window. For this and other spaces, she credits Maxine and Jeff Sikes with Curated Home. “They were extremely pivotal in driving the look,” she says. —Lori Johnston

amie Elliott McPherson draped the wall behind the bed in a gold, earthy fabric to soften the angles and create a cozy nook for reading and relaxing. Furnishings and accessories that appear acquired over time give the sense of a casually elegant “getaway haven,” says McPherson, owner of J. Elliott Style in Highlands. A York Wallcoverings print sets the room’s blue-gray palette. Bamboo blinds, dramatic panels, a wooden chandelier and reclaimed beams give the impression of raising the ceilings while cultivating a mountain feel with a modern twist. —Lori Johnston 101

BATH BLISS

For SUZANNA CULLEN HAMILTON, freestanding bathtubs are as indulgent as they are sculptural

MALI AZIMA

I

T’S DEBATABLE WHETHER the bathtub has taken precedence over the kitchen island in home design priorities, but it’s indisputable that some consider a freestanding tub the equivalent of a Henry Moore sculpture. Perched unobstructed in the middle of the bathroom, the freestanding American bathtub becomes a focal point and centerpiece. The French have even dubbed our American tubs as un autel au moi—an ode to me. Thankfully, corner-unit garden tubs with steps to enter are no longer populating American bathrooms. Not only were the steps lethal when wet, but those large sunken, acrylic, jetted tubs surrounded by walls of windows always seemed better suited to be oversize bathroom container pots. While some lament the passing of the Victorian claw-foot tub, it’s been replaced by the drop-in tub, which can be surrounded with a stone that matches the vanities for a less expensive, yet polished look. But pity the poor souls who must still contend with the traditional three-wall alcove tub! C’est tous Americains! Nowadays, you can dim the lights and turn on spa-like music with the flick of a switch. For a haute couture look, there’s the copper, stone or marble, all of which are so sculptural, you might just want to show them off to houseguests. As for me, I’m going to hop into my walk-in shower before I head to the Imaginary Worlds exhibition at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. I prefer showers to baths and artistic sculpture to bathtubs. To each their own!
