PALM BEACH PANACHE A bright combination that originated in South Florida—citrus hues and crisp white— now populates houses from coast to coast with infusions of painted rattan, Lucite and Chinese Chippendale Written by SUZANNA CULLEN HAMILTON
EARLY DAYS When Standard Oil magnate Henry Flagler established the Florida East Coast Railway in 1894, he changed residential development, hospitality and American style in the process. After building his opulent 100,000-square-foot mansion “Whitehall” in Palm Beach, Flagler developed the Royal Poinciana Hotel and The Breakers, thereby solidifying the 18-mile stretch of beach as the epitome of style in the Gilded Age. Lavish events were hosted throughout the winter months as America’s wealthiest families escaped to Palm Beach for “the season.”

Palm Beach quickly became a second-home destination, and Worth Avenue shops were filled with names such as Vanderbilt, Astor, Rockefeller, Carnegie and Morgan. Soon the heavy and ornate styles of the original developers were replaced with designs more appropriate for the climate and the period. The formal Gilded Aged aesthetics gave way to a relaxed mid-century style that still permeates South Florida design.

BOLD BEACH THEMES The bright, clear colors of the South Florida coast combined with days that revolved around the ocean, beach and golf course set the palette for both interiors and fashion. Palm Beach resident and iconic designer Lilly Pulitzer created her famous citrushued dresses after splashing her clothes too many times with juice from her husband’s orange groves. Those same tones of coral, turquoise, lime green and egg yolk-yellow were found in interiors throughout the area that featured crisp white walls and views of the ocean. Seashells, peacock wicker chairs and Lucite coffee tables were decorative accessories in most living rooms, while dining rooms frequently featured white lacquered rattan or Chinese Chippendale furniture surrounded by decorative treillage grids lining the walls.

MASS MARKET Palm Beach style continues to permeate the market—and far beyond the sunny shores of South Florida. Lilly Pulitzer now offers a wide range of home goods in addition to remaining a staple in summer closets from Palm Beach to Laguna. White with punches of bold tropical hues remains a popular palette throughout the country, while Lucite and painted wicker are attractive for a myriad of uses. For 70 years, Palm Beach style has remained crisp and clean, yet inviting and cheery. For that, Lilly would be enormously pleased. 21
