HOT LIST DEN PARTY R Hughes brings a moody, denlike escape to ADAC with its fresh build-out that’s as intimate as it is showstopping Written by CLAIRE RUHLIN Photographed by DAVID CHRISTENSEN

WHEN RYAN HUGHES MOVED HIS SHOWROOM to its 9,000-square-foot space at ADAC in 2015, R Hughes set the precedent for showstopping showroom design with layers of thoughtfully curated pieces, exclusive collections and a Holland & Sherry showroomwithin-a-showroom. The latest addition is “THE DEN,” a 2,000-square-foot build-out whose moody design offers a different experience from the main floor’s light-flooded, airy layout. Inky walls—oak paneling by Wood Mill Lab on one end and textured, light-reflecting plaster by Atlanta painter Tommy Taylor on the other—create an intimate environment that was achieved with the help of Smith Hanes Studio. Sconces, chandeliers and a working fireplace, designed by Chad James Group, create a warm glow, while a 12-foot-long table offers a spacious space to work or gather in conversation. “We wanted another area for our customers to view the products that offered a different experience than the main area,” says Hughes. “A designer could have looked at something many times prior and then see it almost for the first time in this new backdrop.” Hughes also plans for The Den to serve as a space for gathering and entertaining. “We plan to use this room for small dinner parties with our vendors and our clients, and as a reception space for product launches.” r-hughes.com

Interior designer Shayelyn Woodbery delivers a runway-ready look at the 11th installment of ADAC: Behind the Windows Written by SEJAL BHIMA Photographed by MALI AZIMA

WHEN SHAYELYN WOODBERY WAS TASKED with demonstrating the interplay between fashion and interiors for ADAC’s latest Behind the Windows series, inspiration struck the fashion-forward interior designer immediately. “I asked myself where would hip, creative people go to hang out? And so I envisioned a Paris-meetsNew York City private cocktail lounge where the fashion industry might mingle,” she says. Also part of the equation was her good friend Susan Singletary, owner of Buckhead’s PEOPLES boutique, which specializes in designer clothing and accessories not carried in department stores. “Susan and I share a very similar aesthetic,” says Woodbery. “It’s classic but with a ‘now’ and very edgy twist to it.” Their shared philosophy is on display throughout the well-edited vignette, most notably with a clean-lined mohair banquette set against a floral graffiti wallpaper. As the room’s design and color story began to take shape, Singletary and Woodbery traveled to New York to meet with fashion designer NELLIE PARTOW, whose new collection—with its minimal yet detail-oriented direction—struck a chord that was aesthetically similar to the vignette back in Atlanta. They handpicked pieces from the designer that would give life to Woodbery’s ultra-chic vision for the room.

The final result is a sexy space fit for fashion’s elite. The moody lounge invites guests to grab a drink at the custom midcentury-inspired bar and then make their way over to a sleek communal console or a cozier tableand-chair setup for more-intimate conversations. But no matter where the well-heeled style influencers choose to rub elbows, the antique mirrored walls ensure they’ll always get a chance to see and be seen. While the lounge might be an artistic figment of Woodbery’s imagination, it’s not short on inspiration. “If someone wanted to translate this (look) into their own home or wardrobe, I’d say to always invest in quality pieces that will serve as your foundation. If the foundation pieces are done right, it takes very little to add wow factor.”

Built as a pharmacy in 1920, the building’s history greatly informed restoration efforts, which returned terrazzo floors to their former glory and unveiled 15-foot plaster ceilings littered with holes from decades of electrical work. Summerour saved the smaller ones— citing their character—each of which contribute to establishing the mood for an open, airy creative space in the former dining room. Anchoring the space are two massive drafting tables, plus a small meeting area with a Summerour watercolor as the focal point. Award-winning architectural designer WILLIAM T. BAKER is a master of classical architecture thanks to his devotion to detail, scale and proportion. Through rich photographs, the third volume of Images Publishing’s Classicist series, Great American Homes, displays Baker’s command for the craft Written by CLAIRE RUHLIN above This English Regency–inspired estate designed by William T. WHAT ROLE HAS CLASSICAL ARCHITECTURE PLAYED IN SHAPING THE SOUTH’S CURRENT ARCHITECTURAL LANDSCAPE? Classical architecture has deep roots in the South. Great American Homes reflects this classical heritage as it is expressed in our 21st-century lives. While the classical orders may not appear as often as in the past, the best architecture of today is still influenced by the scale and proportions found in that earlier work. WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES ATLANTA’S RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE PARTICULARLY UNIQUE? As I speak with visitors to Atlanta, a frequent comment is how beautiful our older neighborhoods are. I believe this is due largely to our classical heritage and appreciation for elegant architecture that has stood the test of time. HOW DO YOU BALANCE CLASSIC STYLE WITH MODERN LIFESTYLES? I am a firm believer that form

beautiful it is. The challenge is how to blend the floor plans of today with the aesthetics of the past. Great American Homes: Vol. Three is my response to those who wonder how this is possible. HOW DOES THE AMERICAN DREAM PLAY INTO YOUR WORK AND CLASSICAL ARCHITECTURE AS A WHOLE? I believe my homes are the ultimate expression of the American dream. Americans have always desired to provide a safe and comfortable haven for their families. The homes I am designing today are a continuation of an aesthetic that goes back to the beginning of our country.

WITHERSPOON WRITTEN BY KATE ABNEY

AH&L sat down with the Oscar-winning actress, Nashville native and tastemakerturned entrepreneur to discuss her Atlanta outpost of DRAPER JAMES—the fourth in her series of Southern boutiques—at its grand opening in November. Designed by celebrated Los Angeles designer MARK D. SIKES, it features a striped blue-and-white awning, lacquered doors and brass lanterns, plus chintz wallpaper, contemporary art, wicker and, as Witherspoon adds playfully, a sofa your husband can stretch out on.

WHY ATLANTA, AND WHY NOW? Honestly, the idea of the brand first started in Atlanta. I was making a movie here and noticed how much the culture had changed. At the time, I was being approached by Northeastern brands, but I thought, ‘Why not start a brand that speaks to what it means to be a Southern woman?’ HOW DID YOU AND MARK D. SIKES APPROACH THE ATLANTA STORE? I love that he spent a lot of time growing up in Nashville and appreciates the same things I do: white-brick houses, blue-and-white stripes, brass accents, Southern artists. He was able to incorporate all of those elements. HOW DOES YOUR PERSONAL STYLE TRANSLATE INTO THE DESIGN OF THIS PARTICULAR STORE? Mark is helping design a home for me right now, and as we

KELLY & JUSTIN

ANTHONY This driven, dynamic duo— restaurateur and design forces in their own right—are pioneering change throughout Atlanta Written by THE EDITORS

Justin and Kelly Anthony of True Story Brands have attained many “firsts” in their 20-plus-years careers in Atlanta. A South African soccer-star-turnedrestaurateur, Justin opened 10 Degrees South—the first South African restaurant in the U.S.—in 1998 with his parents on Roswell Road. A chance visit to the eatery by residential and commercial interior designer Kelly Wolf the next year would lead to a marriage of not just personalities but professions, with each partner influencing and enhancing the other’s bullish business acumen. “We don’t take the easy road,” laughs Kelly. “We take road less traveled; we are always thinking, ‘How do we push the boundaries?’ Our motto in life is that if you’re sitting still, nothing is going to happen.”

Also a notable residential designer, Kelly’s tonal palette and couture detailing is on view at the 2013 Home for the Holidays Designer Showhouse.

Ingenuity In addition to her design work for True Story Brands, Kelly has designed both the Spanx corporate headquarters at The Shops Buckhead Atlanta as well as the company’s retail stores. Her clean-lined, fashion-forward aesthetic resonates with even Atlanta’s most traditional set. In another first, Kelly and her design team, along with Justin and his staff, transformed Yebo Beach Haus into Yebo Ski Haus in winter of 2015, creating a seasonal pop-up model unlike anything Atlanta had ever seen. Now in its third incarnation, the concept has since been imitated. “We are risk-takers; we dance to the beat of our own drum and hope that everyone follows that tune,” she says.

In an indication of the couple’s blind confidence, the pair have taken over restaurants that had previously failed (Yebo Beach Haus is located at the former Seeger’s and Coast; Cape Dutch at the former Woodfire Grill) and completely overhauled the spaces to reflect the unique, experiential approach that today’s consumers find so attractive.

West Coast meets Atlanta, with the demand for NanaWall and big slider doors in both luxury residences and mid-priced homes. “You open that door and suddenly your outdoor space is your indoor space and your indoor space is your outdoor space,” says Sheehan, who is currently bringing modern ranch characteristics to an in-town Atlanta spec subdivision off Peachtree Dunwoody Road. “I’m willing to push the envelope.”

AROUND TOWN WITH

Naomi Von Habersham A NEW YEAR, A NEW YOU! That’s the phrase that practically every women’s magazine used to splash across its covers come January and February, the thinking being, I assume, that each of us was ready to improve ourselves over the coming year. Well, I’ve been around long enough to know that you can’t fight gravity or age. So instead of worrying about how to look new and improved, I just focus on what’s new in the world around me. Trust me, it’s far less stressful. You know one thing that’s new for 2018? Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. Or, at least, it’s new in the sense that a new version of it will debut this month on Netflix. The show was such a hit in its day (2003 to 2007, to be exact) that I question whether its original success can be repeated. It reminds me of the reboots of Dallas and Dynasty, two shows that, in my humble opinion, should never have had a version 2.0. By the way, just why did the producers of the new Dynasty feel the need to set the show in Atlanta? I’ve lived in this city forever, and I have yet to find a family that comes close to the Carringtons or the Colbys. That’s probably a good thing. I’ll tell you something new I would like to see in Atlanta this year: some new French restaurants. I love Anis, Le Bilboquet and Bistro Niko, but as far as I’m concerned, this city can never have enough French bistros. With the phenomenal success of Le Coucou in New York, will Atlantans follow suit and rediscover the joys of French cooking? I certainly hope so. And on the design front, I’m told that the new hot color is Ultra Violet, the so-called Color of the Year as determined by the Pantone Color Institute. What I want to know is, what ever happened to those sophisticated shades like Cinnabar and Absinthe? Will they ever be popular once again? This inquiring mind wants to know!

hef Linton and Gina Hopkins cultivated a relationship with the Atlanta Braves during the four years H&F Burger operated at Turner Field. When the Braves officially moved headquarters to SunTrust Park and The Battery in March 2017, the new stadium called for a new project. “The kind of restau-

rant The Battery needed was a modern steakhouse,” Linton says. “Steakhouses have an almost universal appeal, which welcomes people for many occasions, from a casual lunch or a business dinner to a first date or a family birthday celebration.” The restaurant features more than 17 types of beef cuts (Linton’s personal favorite is the Eureka), but local vegetables and seafood—there’s even a walk-up oyster bar—are also prominent on the menu, offering options for omnivores and vegetarians alike. “I think our diversity is one of the factors that sets us apart,” says Linton. Sleek and modern, the 6,300-square-foot interiors were designed by Brian Buckner of Square Feet Studio in collaboration with Gina, who also serves as the restaurant’s sommelier. Murals by abstract painter Maeve Harris, including one on the ceiling, and a showstopping chandelier by Gabriel Scott create an upscale yet comfortable space. “This is one of the ways we wanted to create our own identity in the steakhouse world,” says Linton. “Modern, sleek, cool and inviting.” c-ellets.com

WELCOME F RO M T H E CHAIRS

F RO M T H E D E A N Grace to you and peace! It is a joy to welcome you to the 2018 Cathedral Antiques Show! On behalf of the people of the Cathedral Parish of St. Philip, I also welcome you to this vibrant church community. The Cathedral of St. Philip was established in 1847 as the first Episcopal Church in Atlanta. We moved to our present location here in Buckhead in 1932 and have grown tremendously since then.

The Cathedral Antiques Show began as a small and seasonal fundraiser organized by our parish Episcopal Church Women. Their work—and ministry—now requires a year-round commitment and has raised more than $5 million for Atlanta-area charitable organizations. While the show is now considered one of the finest in the Southeast, this effort involves so much more than antiques! This is a powerful ministry of outreach. The proceeds this year are designated for A.G. Rhodes Health & Rehab, a non-profit organization providing short-term and long-term care at three nursing homes in the Atlanta area. While utilizing research, technology and innovative approaches to improve care and quality of life, A.G. Rhodes has served more than 1,100 elders each year, many of whom are living with dementia and lack the resources to pay for their medical and living expenses. I encourage you to learn more about A.G. Rhodes, how their work helps individuals and the greater good in our community, and how you might be able to help. I sincerely thank this year’s Co-Chairs, Beverly Gwynn and Dabney Hollis, for doing an outstanding job. They have organized and worked with hundreds of volunteers in creating this weeklong event. I salute Nancy and Randy Rizor, who agreed to serve as the Honorary Chairs of the Antiques Show, for they represent Cathedral faithfulness and generosity at its best. I also thank each of you for visiting the Cathedral today, and invite you to return for other occasions of service and prayer. We are open daily, and this is truly a house of prayer for all people. Your presence helps us fulfill that mission of openness and hospitality! May God bless you always,

Welcome to the 2018 Cathedral Antiques Show! With the fabulous Cathedral of St. Philip as a backdrop, inspiration abounds with exquisite art and antiques, as well as beautiful flowers adorning the altars and gracing every nook. Among the many distinguished antiques and art dealers at the 2018 Show, we are pleased to present our perennial favorites as well as several dealers making their debut appearance. We offer pop-up shops with gorgeous vintage linens and garden gifts and accessories. Daily lunch may be purchased on the main floor in St. Ruth’s Café adjacent to the dealer booths, and afternoon coffee or tea is complimentary. Back by popular demand, appraisals will be available by appointment for your finest pieces. The show’s tradition of great talks & book signings continues with interior design Architectural Digest AD100 superstar Ellie Cullman and her partner, Leigh Cavanaugh, joined by moderator Jennifer Boles, author of the Peak of Chic blog, who will engage you in an informative discussion on integrating the classic with modern design. We also are thrilled to present designer and author of the Little Augury blog, Gaye Tapp; internationally-known floral designer and teacher Holly Heider Chapple, founder of the Chapple Designers and Hope Flower Farm; and winner of the Shutze Award for architectural design excellence, acclaimed architect Keith Summerour. Our 2018 beneficiary is A.G. Rhodes Health & Rehab, a nonprofit organization operating three skilled nursing facilities in the Atlanta area that meet the needs of aging seniors, many of whom are living with dementia and lack the resources to pay for their medical and living expenses. The show’s contribution to A.G. Rhodes’ work in this community would not be possible without the support of many friends, and we are deeply grateful to everyone who has contributed to the success of this effort –– most especially our patrons and sponsors; the Dean, Chapter, clergy and staff of the Cathedral; Nancy and Randy Rizor; Patricia McLean; the Cathedral Antiques Show Committee and many dedicated volunteers; our partners at A.G. Rhodes . . . and you. Thank you. Enjoy the Show! Beverly Gwynn & Dabney Hollis 2018 Co-Chairs

H O N O R A RY C H A I R S NANCY & R A N DY R I Z O R Nancy and Randy Rizor have been involved in many facets of Cathedral life since joining in 1990, including serving as Chapter and Finance Committee members, children’s Sunday School teachers and confirmation leaders. Randy has also served as an usher and was a Boy Scout leader for over 20 years, while Nancy has chaired the Altar Guild for decades and the Antiques Show twice. When asked about their greatest contributions to the Cathedral, Randy said working with the Boy Scouts has been the “greatest single volunteer contribution of my life,” and that spending time with the boys is energizing and something he always looks forward to. Nancy’s introduction to Altar Guild was as a young girl, when she helped her mother at the Episcopal church where she grew up. She has chaired the Cathedral’s altar guild for 20 years and feels a sense of peace and closeness to God when she’s doing that work. The liturgy and music are some of the aspects of the Cathedral that the Rizors love most. The Rizors’ commitment to service extends beyond the Cathedral, as Nancy serves as chair of the board of All About Developmental Disabilities and Randy as a colonel in the Army Reserves, having served two tours of duty in Iraq. Randy will also be president of the Medical Association of Atlanta and is very active in the Medical Association of Georgia. Randy is an anesthesiologist in private practice specializing in the rehabilitation treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and pain. Nancy is a realtor with Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International Realty. They have two adult sons, Crawford and James. Randy and Nancy both love horses, fishing, hunting, and “just about anything outdoors.”

CATHEDRAL ANTIQUES SHOW HONORARY CHAIRS, 2018

Nancy and Randy have invested almost three decades into this community of faith and the community at large. They have improved both through countless acts of service and love. The Cathedral Antiques Show is proud to honor them as Honorary Chairs of the 2018 Show.

Built in 1951 for the Patterson family, this Lewis Crook-designed home was purchased by interior designer John Banks in 2014. A renovation by Spitzmiller & Norris brought this elegant yet cozy home to its current state of perfection. A contemporary art collection combined with one-of-a-kind antiques showcase the designer’s unique style. An acanthus leaf and Greek key design create continuity throughout the house and gardens. An outside porch, now a glass-enclosed dining room, has an enchanting view of the E. Graham Pittman-designed gardens.

Originally designed and built by Verner Martin in 1966, this historic estate home located along the scenic banks of the Chattahoochee River, sits on 16 acres alongside the original family home. It was first renovated in 1980 by architect Jack Thomas and builder Bob Goodsell, and a den with a large stone fireplace was added by architect Duane Stone and builder Alan Layson in 2002. This lovely family home is filled with antiques inherited over four generations. The brick floors, found in an old church in South Georgia, are over a hundred years old. Handprints of the brick makers and dog footprints can be seen on some of the bricks.

Palisades, built in 1920, was renovated by Keith Summerour in 2015 when, desiring a walkable area close to the Atlanta restaurant scene, he moved back to the city from Towerhouse Farm. The builder of Palisades was Mike Gullett. A gym was added by Danny Combs and Billy Cobb. Landscape Architect Jeremy Smearman of Planters and Interior Designer Caroline Normark of Caroline Normark Interiors each participated in the Palisades we see today. The home is filled with Summerour’s original artwork inspired by his travels both domestic and international. The studio for Summerour Architects sits 200 feet from the home on Peachtree Road.

This newly built home with craftsmanship and exquisite design details is the collaborative product of Billy Huger and architect Duane Stone. Expansive steel mullioned windows throughout the house allow for luminous interiors filled with natural light. With interiors designed by Felicia Huger, the family home features a fresh take on the use of French, English and American antiques. Inherited oil portraits are paired perfectly with more classically updated modern fabrics and contemporary art and sculpture. This gorgeous home reflects a classic interior with a contemporary edge. 13

WO O D H AV E N D R I V E “Knollwood, an exquisite melding of English Georgian style and Southern charm, was originally constructed in 1929 by noted architect Phillip Shutze. This once-90-acre estate—now a threeacre oasis—is dotted with gorgeous gardens, fruit trees and a grand fountain. Inside, the interior includes elaborate moldings crowning original plaster walls with hand-crank shutters. Several thoughtful and meticulous renovations throughout its lifetime have added modern, family-focused updates in the kitchen and keeping room, as well as the third level media room, while maintaining a balance of old charm and current comfort in this historic Atlanta gem. 14

COLOR CRUSH

ROBERT BROWN, ROBERT BROWN INTERIOR DESIGN “COLOR IS BACK,” SAYS INTERIOR DESIGNER ROBERT BROWN. This sentiment couldn’t be more evident than in the living room and bar, which is a departure from the designer’s customary neutral palette. For starters, Brown painted the walls a bold eggplant hue, Farrow & Ball’s Pelt (No. 254), which pops against a chartreuse sofa and a large abstract painting sourced from a London antiques fair. “As we chose textiles, we wanted things that played well together but were not perfect matches,” he says. “It is much more interesting that way.” Indeed, though the room is awash with various hues, it nonetheless feels collected and comfortable. “We have been in a period of using little color,” says Brown. “Then there was a trend of adding pops of color. Now we feel like it’s the perfect time to use bold, saturated color.” –Claire Ruhlin 71

ENCHANTING ENTRANCE BARBARA WESTBROOK, WESTBROOK INTERIORS

FLIGHTS OF FANCY WERE ON DISPLAY IN BARBARA WESTBROOK’S dramatic entry hall and foyer, where a pair of Tom Corbin’s bronze sculptures—illuminated by paintings from Pryor Fine Art—draw the eyes upward to the sweeping staircase, and porcelain butterflies (hand-imprinted with varying patterns of antique lace) appear to be flying toward the daylight-lit oculus above. A round walnut inlaid table anchors the lofty space, while Ochre’s Seed Cloud chandelier presides over the front entrance, glimmering against the moody movement of the custom wallcovering by Area Environments. A feminine dash of whimsy greeted guests upon ascending the circular staircase, thanks to Porta Romana’s duck feet lamp topped by a chic ostrich shade, artist Clay Johson’s acrylic-on-panel, “Flagstaff,” and a mix of bronze and gilded bowls. –Elizabeth Ralls 72

INSPIRED BY THE COSMOPOLITAN HOTEL JULIEN in Antwerp, Belgium, Kay Douglass infused this Showhouse dining room with a sense of European simplicity. “The hotel was comfortable and cozy without being overly fluffy,” she says. “Here, we wanted the emphasis to be focused on color and scale.” To create a clean feel, the designer decided to forgo a rug, focusing instead on the wood floors. A mobile from the Hermès flagship store in Paris serves as “the jewelry of the room,” while an overscale gray bench and a pair of Hermès-orange-inspired banquettes on either side of the room add a functional touch. “We wanted a festive feel to the room, and orange can be such a lovely neutral,” says Douglass. “All grays and silvers react so beautifully. The drama here is in the strength of color.” –Claire Ruhlin 75

STUDIED CHIC JAMES WHEELER, J. WHEELER DESIGNS

“THIS ROOM IS A MODERN VERSION of a gentleman’s study inspired by the midcentury era,” says James Wheeler. The designer updated the traditional study by mixing antique, vintage and modern pieces for a sophisticated yet approachable space. On the ceiling, a wallcovering embroidered in a geometric wool pattern provides sound absorption. Its blue hue is carried throughout the room via a pair of custom chaises, while a pair of ochre chairs adds a shock of color. A handwoven area rug from Nepal features yellow silk markings that add a touch of shimmer. “The color scheme was intended to be both sophisticated and timeless,” says Wheeler. An assortment of artwork on the walls includes an eye-catching 8-foot-tall landscape photograph that the artist painted on top of. “Whether curling up in the chaise longues to read a book by the fire or entertaining guests after dinner, this space is meant to be enjoyed by all,” says Wheeler. –Claire Ruhlin

MASTERFUL MIX JOHN OETGEN, OETGEN DESIGN INC.

SCHUMACHER’S INDIAN ARBRE FABRIC takes center stage in John Oetgen’s master bedroom thanks to a showstopping upholstered folding screen the designer employed as a headboard. Using his signature mix of tradition with a dash of daring, Oetgen placed the pillows with custom Jenny Johnson Allen Custom Linens shams on the diagonal and topped the bed with an oversized velvet bolster and fur throw. And, because an Oetgen-designed space wouldn’t be complete without contemporary art and antiques, the designer 78

placed a circa-1800 Italian dressing mirror to the left of the bed; in it, a mix of ceramic and porcelain parrots find their reflection, as does a framed floral photograph of his own design. To add height to an architectural niche, the designer placed a pair of stone pedestals on either side of the sofa (also upholstered in Indian Arbre), and topped them with a pair of 18th-century marble urns with painted tole flowers. A tall, ebonized secretary placed directly across from the bed completes the elegant feel of the lofty space. –Elizabeth Ralls

FEMININE FLOURISH

CATHY RHODES, CATHY RHODES INTERIORS AS IF COMPOSING THE PERFECT OUTFIT, Cathy Rhodes adorned the dreamy lady’s lounge with statement pieces. Rhodes furnished the feminine room with a curvaceous Bradley sofa and a velvet Mr. Brown daybed where the fashionable woman of the home can dress for the evening, gather with friends to try on outfits and unwind alone at the end of the day. “My starting point for the room, when I knew I wanted something that was glamorous, was the Cowtan & Tout curtain fabric because I just thought the silver embroidered medallions were pretty and feminine and dressy,” she says. The fabric and Phillip Jeffries grass cloth wallcoverings defined the palette of creams and silvers with touches of blue and blush—and led to the artwork. The delicate beauty of a peony in Illia Barger’s painting, Sophie, exudes the femininity of Georgia O’Keeffe in a way that resonated with the designer “I always want all of my rooms to feel very pretty and inviting,” says Rhodes. —Lori Johnston

ELEGANT ESCAPE CATHY RHODES, CATHY RHODES INTERIORS

CATHY RHODES CONTINUED the soothing blue tones of the master bedroom into the master bath with Farrow & Ball’s Skylight on the walls, trim and doors. A crystal stacked ball chandelier from Circa infused more glamour and features a custom Mark Alexander fabric shade. “I always want all of my rooms to feel very pretty and inviting,” Rhodes says. A roomy tub provides the perfect place to relax and decompress, and ethereal curtain sheers from Cowtan & Tout offer privacy. “The sheer window treatments allow you to soak in the tub in privacy while still letting light into the room,” says Rhodes. Mother of pearl mirrors are a feminine touch—appropriate for the lady of the house—while a hide rug adds softness to the tile floors. The bath’s cabinetry, custom designed by Bell Cabinetry & Design, is as luxe as the rest of the room and was painted Benjamin Moore’s Super White, a hue that completes the serene look of the space.

DREAMY DOMAIN

CLARY BOSBYSHELL, MARGAUX INTERIORS LIMITED

THIS GROUND-FLOOR POWDER, designed by Clary Bosbyshell, packs a punch with a dreamy wallpaper, Swan Lake by Nina Campbell for Osborne & Little. “It has always been a favorite of mine,” says Bosbyshell. “I feel that a powder room should be its own special jewel box.” To play off the wallpaper’s lighthearted feel, she commissioned Julie Neill Designs to create a pair of leafy, cus¬tom plaster sconces that add life to the space. Pulling from the wall’s hot-pink details, Bosbyshell peppered the space with touches of pink, such as monogrammed towels and fresh flowers. “The wallpaper lends itself to be more traditional, so by mixing in the plaster sconces and a contemporary monogram choice on the towels, I think the space feels updated and fun,” the designer says. Additional accessories include a side table and swan from Parc Monceau, an antique mirror from Foxglove Antiques, an Oushak rug from Moattar and a pair of paintings by Barbara Flowers from Anne Irwin Fine Art. “I love to add a little table and rug to a powder room,” Bosbyshell says. “I think it dresses up the space and warms it up.” –Claire Ruhlin 83

“SINCE THIS ROOM HAD NO WALLS, I knew it had to be all about the light fixture,” says designer Meredith McBrearty, who called upon New Orleans–based Julie Neill Designs to create a custom plaster light fixture that would fill the space without being overly heavy. McBrearty then paired a contemporary yet timeless table with more-traditional bentwood chairs—to which the designer added leather mini-skirts by Douglass Workroom for a dose of fun. “I love leather for its durability and wipeability, especially if there are children involved,” McBrearty says. “I think the mix is very important.” –Claire Ruhlin 84

CLASSIC COMFORT

MEREDITH MCBREARTY INTERIORS AND BELL CABINETRY & DESIGN

IN THE KITCHEN, MEREDITH MCBREARTY opted for warm materials and transitional pieces, such as ivory lampshades, soft gilt barstools and a Turkish Oushak runner, to complement the tones in the cabinetry, which was designed by Bell Cebinetry & Design. I wanted the kitchen to complement the style of the house, the old English feel,” says Bell’s Beni Borza, who borrowed elements of the home’s architecture when designing the cabinetry’s tall, wide doors and layout. “Probably one of the most rewarding aspect working on this project was that I was able to combine the traditional look and finishes of cabinetry with modern elements,” says Borza. Metal barstools with a soft gilt finish pop against the kitchen island, which boasts a custom stain by Bell. –Claire Ruhlin

THE AIRY KEEPING ROOM WITH AN OPEN VIEW of the outdoors presented an opportunity for designer Shayelyn Woodbery to subvert expectations. “I had so much fun doing this room because it was elegant, but it’s also a little fun and funky,” she says. The designer envisioned a chic ski lodge because of the vaulted tongueand-groove ceiling and exposed beams, and she found inspiration for her edgy twist on a woodsy retreat from an article about designer and architect Isamu Noguchi. She created a collected feel by mixing vintage and antique furniture, such as the B&B Italia sofa

upholstered in Schumacher’s geometric Vanderbilt Velvet, a Chinese hunting chair and side tables from Parc Monceau, with new and custom pieces, including the lacquered coffee table from her firm. The painting over the fireplace by Blayne McCauley offers one of the few bursts of color in the blend of varied neutrals. “I don’t love it when you see a color explosion. I like color to be very intentional,” Woodbery says. A custom silk-ball light fixture, inspired by paper lanterns in the home of Georgia O’Keeffe, also lends itself to the keeping room’s soft yet sexy allure. —Shannon Dominy 89

THE PORCH BLENDS INDOORS WITH OUT, thanks to weather-friendly fabrics and furnishings that look and feel like they belong inside. “We didn’t want the room feeling like an outdoor space,” says designer Yvonne McFadden. “We wanted it to be comfortable, cozy, with lots of great textures.” To achieve this, McFadden blended old pieces with new to add character. An antique African daybed offers a snug perch by the fire, while an antique wooden dining table provides a place to gather for alfresco dinners. Organic elements nod to the outdoors, and McFadden incorporated copper accents throughout to tie into the home’s interior. “We wanted to create an open and inviting floor plan that was easily accessible,” she says. “We wanted to pull not only aspects from nature but also elements from the house. From the cooking space to the dining space to the lounge area, the easy flow allows for a great entertaining space for family.” –Claire Ruhlin

WARM & WELCOMING LAUREN DAVENPORT IMBER, DAVENPORT DESIGNS LTD.

LAUREN DAVENPORT IMBER DIVERTED ATTENTION from utilitarian aspects of the laundry room by accentuating both the walls and ceiling. After spotting a bubble-like pattern in the Schumacher Raindots wallcovering, she decided to float the slate-blue wallpaper on the ceiling. “The laundry room was such an expansive space. I wanted the ceiling to be fun as well,” she says. Although she tends toward neutrals, the bold Farrow & Ball Oval Room Blue walls picks up tones from the ceiling and the Villa Nova fabric used for the Roman shade. The Solitude chandelier’s brass elements and glass rods are whimsical yet dressy. Built-ins hold a striking collection of cobalt, blue-gray, and white vases and plates. For cohesiveness, Imber mixed the blues with warm tones in the adjacent mudroom, with its Louis Philippe antique chest, contemporary abstract, blue velvet cushions and built-ins that envelop a busy family in a big (and well-organized) hug. “I really wanted the mudroom to feel warm and cozy because it’s the first thing you see when you come into the garage and the last thing you see when you exit the home,” she says. —Lori Johnston 93

PATRICIA MCLEAN PROCLAIMED HER UPSTAIRS MASTER SUITE “The Classic Corner,” evident in her ebullient display of antiques. She was captivated by the curved arms and walnut apron of the antique Italian Gondola sofa, the first piece she selected, and its perfect fit underneath the massive 90-inch window. For the draperies, she selected a linen with velvet appliqués in a soft blue-gray damask pattern with cream and ivory accents. “I never skimp on the window treatments,” she says. The rare antique Serapi rug established the palette of rich peach, cream and blue tones. McLean, who is known for her knowledge of antiques and customization of fabrics, finishes and paint colors, challenged herself to play with scale and shapes, such as the custom rounded headboard in Lee Jofa Aerin velvet and 19th-century coromandel screens. In the sitting area, she paid homage to England with the tables, bookcase and framed prints. A glittering of gilt ties together the vignettes in the relaxing spacious suite. “The collecting of the antiques, that’s my favorite part,” she says, adding that “it’s disparate parts that make a really nice whole.” —Lori Johnston

STORYBOOK STYLE

MALLORY MATHISON GLENN, MALLORY MATHISON INC.

WHEN DESIGNING THIS BOY’S BEDROOM, Mallory Mathison Glenn envisioned a colorful retreat for a fictional “Little Boy Bleu,” borrowing influence from France and the showhouse beneficiary, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. “We wanted to design a room for children that would be a beautiful, whimsical space to grow up in, rest and play,” she says. Plaisirs de la Chine, a fanciful chinoiserie fabric by Schumacher, was used for the duvets and pillow shams and served as the lead for her designs. Glenn then looked to French designer Madeleine Castaing when adding a tented ceiling to the space. “Traditionally, tented rooms utilize the same fabric on the walls and the tented ceiling treatment, so we wanted to mix that up and layer the color, texture and pattern to create an unexpected twist on the classic tent,” she says. For the walls Glenn selected Schumacher’s trellis-patterned Belvedere fabric, designed by Veere Grenney for Schumacher, while the ceiling features Schumacher’s Cotton stripe fabric. –Claire Ruhlin 97

JIMMY STANTON EMBARKED ON THIS PROMINENT, open space at the top of the home’s showstopping staircase with his signature: one color, one finish. Once the lounge’s walls, ceiling and trim were painted Farrow & Ball’s All White (No. 2005)—not too bright or too stark—Stanton added stone, concrete, wood, antique mirrors and textures to amp up the clean palette. Custom McAlpine side consoles, instead of traditional built-in bookshelves, flank a gallery wall with a series of modern abstracts. Across from the graphic artwork, Stanton hung an abstract with pinks, whites and

pale grays above a reclaimed-wood console. A faux bois rug links the two areas. In every space, Stanton tries to accommodate as much seating as possible; here, he placed a linen Haven sofa, traditional wing chairs, garden stools and ottomans to create a calm, peaceful space for guests gathering for morning coffee or after-dinner drinks. “To me, it’s both masculine and feminine, and it’s bringing in traditional elements and modern elements,” he says. “It’s this mixed space, which we loved, with some touches of nature.” —Lori Johnston 99

FUN & FUNCTIONAL LAURA WALKER, VERDE HOME

WHAT STARTED AS SIMPLY “Bedroom No. 5” quickly developed into a dynamic and comfortable lounge with a sectional sleeper sofa that allows the room to function in multiple ways. “A lot of people don’t use their guest rooms, except once or twice a year, so I thought, ‘Let’s just show a way that you can,’” says designer Laura Walker. “Most of us need to be able to use all of the space that we have, and I just wanted to show how you could do that by making it multipurpose.” The vivid floral Hornbeam wallpaper by Farrow & Ball became the backdrop for the whimsical room. The pattern’s energy and color, paired with Farrow & Ball’s Stiffkey Blue and Dix Blue paints, led to softer choices for the fabrics and upholstery, such as soft grays in the Sunbrella fabric for the sectional—durable for sleepovers and movie nights. The Stratum wool rug ties into the marble floors of the en suite bathroom. Walker accented the bedroom with warmer browns in the walnut shelves, padded ottomans, a walnut cocktail table and a leather swivel chair, which she describes as “another fun tidbit” in the multifunctional, multigenerational space. —Shannon Dominy

ONE CAN’T HELP BUT TOUCH THE WALLPAPER in the grown-up guest retreat. Designer Alice Cramer’s original plans changed when she saw the dramatic wallcoverings by Area Environments for Jim Thompson. The intricate floral pattern was given a plaster-like effect using 3-D printing, and customization reached a new level when the pattern was scaled to the 20-by-10-foot wall behind the bed. “It began with the 102

wallpaper. When you do a showhouse, you always want to try to present something new and unusual,” says Cramer. “Then I found the drapery that I loved with the wallpaper, which led me to the rug, which led me to the fabrics.” The Moattar rug and wallpaper are traditional with a nod to modern, like Cramer’s signature style, and the wallpaper serves as an unpredictable, innovative component. HOUSE HISTORY HARRISON DESIGN AND SHEEHAN BUILT HOMES

DESIGNED BY HARRISON DESIGN and built by Sheehan Built Homes, the house evokes a stately English country home, situated on a private two-acre lot carved out of the wooded North Atlanta hills. The 5-bedroom, 8,800-square-foot structure integrates ordered classical design with a more modern, casual space. With the modern family in mind, the expansive residence features a classic formal symmetry in its floorplan, breaking into a more relaxed and open living space towards the home’s rear—a perfect marriage of classical design and modern practicality. The sweeping curved stair is lit from the oculus above. A center gallery serves as the circulation spine of the home, bounded on either end by daylight-flooded staircases for family use. In keeping with the grand scale of the home, 12-foot ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows on the main level allow daylight to penetrate deep within the home, creating a light-filled interior. A wall of sliding glass doors connects the keeping room with a large covered porch. A continuous vaulted ceiling further blurs the transition from the entry foyer; the intimately scaled space and leads the visitor into a dramatic rotunda, creating a seamless entertaining space that overlooks the expansive property. 104

Jewel Tone Revival

F

OR YEARS WE’VE been retiring into minimalism, but this new year might bring back a little drama. Jewel tones are saturating interiors, and the red-blue spectrum is sizzling for 2018. Ultra Violet is Pantone’s 2018 Color of the Year, described as “a dramatically provocative and thoughtful shade of purple that communicates the originality and ingenuity of a visionary.” Is Pantone describing a color or Prince, the Grammy–winning musician who also won an Academy Award for his film Purple Rain? Not to be left out of the jewel-tone revival, Benjamin Moore named Caliente as their 2018 color. “Caliente” is the Spanish word for “hot”—as in the “welcome to my world” kind of simmering warmth of attractiveness. If history is any guide, this 21st-century jewel-tone revival is sure to be a commercial and creative success. Prince’s Purple Rain album dominated the number one spot for five months in 1984, and his 1985 hit “Raspberry Beret” again referenced his love for the “emotions sparked when red and blue collide.” 112

Concurrently, Bill Blass and Oscar de la Renta were splashing “Reagan Red” across the country. First lady Nancy Reagan’s favorite color became synonymous with style, class and power. Red dining rooms were in hot demand for the flattering glow the color imparted under dimmed lights. But in the new millennium, red dining rooms went the way of shoulder pads, and everything was deconstructed down to a minimalist, neutral look wherein the only jewel tones we wanted were on our hands. Although we’ve recently been lacquering kitchen cabinets and libraries in rich colors, is it possible that the romantic red dining room is returning? Is it possible that there could be a plush purple velvet divan inviting one into the foyer? Thirty years ago, Prince sang, “times are changing, it’s time we all reach out for something new, that means you too.” While you slap some paint on the walls, I’m going to rummage through my closet to find my shoulder pads, and I’ll meet you on the purple chaise outside the red dining room.

ERICA GEORGE DINES

2018 ushers in a new era of saturated colors in our interiors; AH&L’s inspired columnist looks back fondly at “Purple Rain” and “Reagan Red”
