EVERYTHING I KNOW ABOUT CREATING a well-set table I either picked up from my mother or grandmother, or learned on the job from my days spent at the much-loved (and now mourned) magazine Southern Accents. Entertaining in Atlanta, and the South, is essentially a manifestation of the graciousness, hospitality, and dare I say sentimentality, for which we are known. And, while crisp linens, polished silver, gleaming crystal and heirloom china certainly go along way towards setting the scene for a memorable dinner party, it’s the passion and personality we imbue into every last detail that have the power to transform an ordinary table into an extraordinary one. Our December issue is devoted to the art of living well, and, for the four designers we’ve enlisted to craft tablescapes worthy of celebration (page 42), entertaining is not an occasion limited to the holidays—it’s a way of life. For John Oetgen, that means even a “great little lunch” can be elevated to the next level with good background music, a swept floor, a jungle of flowers, and “most importantly, cheese biscuits—those little two-bite ones.” Speaking of cheese biscuits, designer Mallory Mathison Glenn’s mother, Monteigne, makes some delicious ones from scratch nearly every morning, and she was gracious enough to share during our shoot. Experience THE BEGINNING: Growing up in Macon, Georgia, William H. “Bill” Harrison began working at age 12 as a draftsperson during the summers. After graduating from Georgia Institute of Technology, he traveled extensively throughout Europe with a keen eye for the Italian architecture of Andrea Palladio. 1991: Harrison’s
first projects in Atlanta encompassed both architecture and construction. In 1991 he shuttered the construction side of the company and formed Harrison Design with a laser focus on creating timeless, classical architecture.

Harrison Design has offices in Atlanta, Los Angeles, New York, Washington, D.C., Santa Barbara, St. Simons and Shanghai. With 60 architects and more than 100 employees, the firm offers comprehensive services in architecture, interior design and landscape architecture.

“We have expanded our commercial scope to include a significant amount of ecclesiastical projects, and we expect that to grow as we work with archdioceses around the country,” says Harrison. “Additionally, we’re on track to release a book every three years as we archive the expansion of the firm and success of our projects.”

Naomi Von Habersham AFTER A YEAR FRAUGHT WITH A CONTENTIOUS presidential election, Brexit and Brangelina’s divorce, the holidays will be a welcome respite from the recent unpleasantness. Forget partisan politics. I’m spending my holidays with Democrats and Republicans alike, hoping that we can put our differences past us and celebrate the season with cheer. What is a Christmas holiday without get-togethers and gatherings with family and friends? And pray tell, what is a holiday get-together without good food? The key to stressfree entertaining is to stock one’s larder with food that is party-ready. I’m currently nostalgic for the Southern delicacies of my youth, so I plan to order pecan logs from Sunnyland Farms in Albany, Georgia, as well as divinity from Savannah’s River Street Sweets. (Can you tell I have a sweet tooth?) To the list of Georgia-made goods, I’ll add cheese straws from Chinaberry Foods and fig preserves and pepper jelly from Braswell’s. And while I’m at it, I’ll order some Pecans for Soldiers, a South Georgia Pecan Co. initiative that allows you to purchase pecans that will be shipped to deployed and wounded soldiers. Of course, gift-giving is as much a part of the holidays as eating, and this year I have made my list and checked it twice. Cookbooks never fail to please our foodie friends, and there is a bumper crop of new ones from which to choose. At the top of my list is Ina Garten’s latest, Cooking for Jeffrey. Do you think that armed with these recipes, I might find my very own Jeffrey? And not to be overlooked are tomes from fellow Atlantans Asha Gomez (My Two Souths: Blending the Flavors of India Into a Southern Kitchen) and Alton Brown (EveryDayCook). In the words of Lucy Van Pelt in “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” I hope your holidays are full of deck them halls and all that stuff. But more important, after a year filled with trials and tribulations, may they also bring us peace on earth and goodwill toward men.

Bold & Bright Holiday entertaining doesn’t always have to be relegated to the dining room, says entertaining authority DANIELLE ROLLINS—get creative and spread the season’s joy throughout the house! In her personal home, Rollins fashioned this winter woodland fantasy in her blue trellised garden room. “I decorate for holidays in the same color schemes that suit my home and use natural elements to add the seasonal flair,” says Rollins. “I strive to create ‘living’ designs that change and adapt for the need or the season.” Playing off of her love for anything garden-inspired, Rollins mixed two of her all-time favorite Mottahedeh patterns, Chelsea Birds and Sacred Bird & Butterfly, to jumpstart her vision. Complementing those patterns are both a showstopping floral centerpiece and a Weston Farms wreath of her own design (“Danielle’s Lark”). The consummate host’s personal design stamp is evident in the tablescape’s eclectic, layered feel, in which old and new, high and low, deftly mix, similar to her design tendencies.

Royally Rich “More is more” is the mantra of this rosy and regal tabletop by the STUDIO AT JIM THOMPSON. Channeling “New Year’s Eve with the Thai Silk King,” the design team pulled all of the finery they could gather—including personal collections of Baccarat, Orrefors, Tiffany, Waterford, Spode and Jaune de Chrome, to usher in the coming year in ravishing style. Lush Jim Thompson silk satin in a variety of rich, radiant colors (Palin in Lion, Fuschia and Mahogany) overlay each other and fall naturally to the floor, creating a haute-couture moment. This tablescape’s crowning jewels—gilt urns, French candelabra, contemporary bronze candlesticks and a mix of vintage and antique china patterns—fashion a visual feast in which a variety of finishes and textures sparkle and shine. Refined Rustic Designer JOHN OETGEN and partner John Lineweaver are serial entertainers, especially when it comes to the Highlands, North Carolina, mountain house they also call home. Whether the affair is planned months in advance or a casual Saturday lunch after a long hike, Oetgen says the pair’s basic mountain lifestyle is generally casual and contemporary—until it comes to the tabletop decor, where he tends to throw restraint out the window. For this holiday table, Oetgen created a colorful and wild jungle, employing flowers he hauled from Atlanta as well as blooms on loan from “garden generous” neighbors, utilizing vases he’s collected through the years. When envisioning his setting, Oetgen enjoys referencing to history, art or comedy and prefers the funny over the serious. His entertaining must-haves: crisp linens, polished silver, a jungle of flowers, good background music, party favors, plenty of wine and liquor, happy people and cheese biscuits.

Hallway TAMI RAMSAY AND KRISTA NYE NICHOLAS, CLOTH & KIND “We had been toying with the idea of a custom wallcovering for a while, and when we saw this long hallway, we knew it would be the perfect opportunity,” says Krista Nye Nicholas. “What could have been a very Spartan space—without the traditional use of furniture—allowed our first product design to really shine.” Though she and Tami Ramsay had worked with Oakland, California–based Paper Mills on many previous custom projects, this was their first creation from scratch. The design evolved over time (120-plus hours of labor and artistry by owner Amy Mills, to be exact) to reflect a narrative that resonated with Serenbe’s classic Southern landscape. Expert installation allowed the mural to bend beautifully around the room’s many angles (including geometric ledges at the far end). Accenting without detracting are circular ikebana vases of pea pods and cotton—whose bolls, Ramsay notes, are quite sculptural in themselves. 53

Great Room KELLY ANTHONY AND JENN BALCOS, WOLF DESIGN GROUP WITH SWOOX Inspired by the rich green of Serenbe’s treetops, Kelly Anthony set out to create a palette of evergreen, black and white with warm metal tones, keeping patterns understated and few. Most notably, a pair of Rose Tarlow sofas and several vintage brass dining chairs are upholstered in a luxurious Italian green silk velvet and mingle with items such as a dressmaker console designed by BoBo Intriguing Objects, a parchment-topped black bench from Lillian August and a cocktail table originally from South of Market. “I wanted it to feel very organic and collected,” says Anthony, who furnished the space almost entirely with goods from her Buckhead consignment store, Swoox. And in a community that promotes sustainability and repurposing, Wolf Design Group’s philosophy proved a perfect fit. “This demonstrates what a high-end designer can do with secondhand goods. We’re reinventing what consignment can look like,” she says.

Kitchen NANCY DUFFEY, SCOUT FOR THE HOME Nancy Duffey was fortunate to work in concert with her husband, J. Ryan Duffey (the building’s architect), to beautify this showhouse’s sun-drenched cooking space. Together with kitchen designer Kingdom Woodworks, the pair sought to express the natural beauty of the oak, adding a lime wax that provided a lovely coloring in contrast with the reclaimed floors. The room’s heavyweight moment is its combined vent hood and shelving concept, where everything blends into the backdrop as a single built-in component. Collections of local black-and-white pottery were selected on an ethos of quality over quantity to reflect the restrained luxury of Serenbe’s pastoral community. An island features gold-flecked quartz forming an elegant waterfall edge, while brass wire stools accent this element without obscuring it. “The room is very open-concept, yet cozy,” Duffey says. “You could have dinner by yourself here and not feel alone.” 59

The penthouse’s multipurpose game room/study/lounge was designed to double as a sleeping spot when company comes calling. “I just want to curl up here with a blanket and drink bourbon,” says designer Bradley Odom. The daybed’s rich green velvet is a near match to the walls, so it blends in like a built-in. “I think dark colors in a small space can feel very much like a cocoon,” he says. “Plus it created a blank canvas for the other pops of color.” While it carries the stately, moody masculinity for which Dixon Rye is known, the room’s mix of design influences stands out most. “I imagine the owner as someone who has collected things over time— some traditional, some midcentury, some contemporary,” says Odom. “A house should be a mix of everything you love, and if you have great taste, it just works.” 61

Studio MELANIE DAVIS AND LACEY SOMBAR, MELANIE DAVIS DESIGN “Because the showhouse benefits the Art Farm at Serenbe, I thought it would be fitting to [turn the bedroom into] an artist studio— specifically, that of a textile artist,” says designer Melanie Davis, who is an artist herself. Anchoring the space behind an airy Lucite desk is a vintage peacock chair and, beyond it, various “textile hoops” that form further punctuation points, especially in tandem with a round mirror to the workspace’s left. Fabrics from Miles Redd, Kelly Wearstler, Peter Fasano and others round out the art installation, while African mud cloths add a touch of rusticity. Black trim adds a crispness that transitions well to the outdoor dining area, while a blackand-white Moroccan rug, midcentury fixture (Serge Mouille’s three-arm ceiling lamp) and vintage brownie cameras flanking the door continue the high-contrast color palette.

Corridor STEVE MCKENZIE “I always think of a settee in an entrance hall as an invitation to come on in and be comfortable,” says Steve McKenzie, who embraced the sophisticated modern lifestyle a penthouse affords. “Since this space had no natural light, we avoided making it too bright, making it something it’s not.” The designer selected a mod and moody Mitchell Black paper with a bronze motif that serves as the perfect backdrop for a classical sunburst mirror, a pair of compelling pink quartz specimens atop vintage gilt brackets and, of course, the cocooning custom-built bench. Perfectly proportioned for the tall but narrow space, the winged piece is upholstered in an embossed olive shagreen with a slight metallic tinge. The flanking buffalo leather–topped walnut tables were handcrafted in Asheville, North Carolina, while the hand-beaded Indian pillows are sold through the artist’s eponymous store, Steve McKenzie’s.

Master Suite KRISTEN MAROONEY WALLS AND SHANE ROBUCK, ROBUCK “I had just purchased the 19th-century brass bed in Toledo, Spain and had it polished. I knew it would pop in this room with the warm wood and all the texture from the hand-brushed Chateau Domingue limewash,” says Shane Robuck, who worked with design partner Kristen Marooney Walls to create a suite replete with Italian, Spanish and French antiques. Even the bathroom boasts 17th-century Italian mirrors. “I imagined a person who traveled constantly, with Serenbe as their refuge in the U.S. They wanted to be surrounded by nice books, interesting art and maps,” Robuck says. Notable pieces range from a pair of French leather chairs flanking a scantonata credenza to an elaborately detailed 17th-century Italian carriage trunk, to 18th-century Kashmir throws that served as the impetus for the design. “These were very en vogue in 19thcentury Europe as shawls,” Robuck notes.

Lobby SUSAN HABLE SMITH, HABLE CONSTRUCTION INC. Setting the stage for welcoming a well-traveled tenant is Athens-based artist and textile artisan Susan Hable Smith’s self-defined “eccentric” design vision. Just outside the elevators, a chenille-upholstered chair and ottoman from Smith’s contemporary furniture collection for Hickory Chair provide a perch upon arrival, and an industrial floor lamp acts as the perfect foil to for the landing’s glam brutalist pendant. Smith’s own India-ink florals on paper provide eye candy, while the adjoining space features a plentitude of pieces by friends—one wall covered in a collage of oils by Carol John, plus photographs by Rinne Allen and Christy Bush. These preside over a curry-colored Moroccan rug, a primitive bench, pillows in Smith’s personal fabrics and an assortment of hats culled the world over. Summing things up, she says, “I prefer unconventional spaces like these so I can be my unconventional self.” 66

ANNA BRAUND, ANNA BRAUND INTERIORS “Serenbe has always been a special place to me,” says Braund. “Our best friends married here, and I always come here for respite, to get away.” This deep understanding inspired the designer to play with elements of nature and artistry in her adjacent laundry and powder room spaces. A floral, paper-backed Clay McLaurin fabric adorns the walls of the powder room, where a gold-flecked quartz runs up the wall to ground the unlacquered brass fixtures Braund had professionally replated. Reflected in the antique mirror glass is a collection of resin tortoise shells. Nearby, a Michael S. Smith wallpaper adds interest to the laundry room, where an étagère serves as surplus storage for Indian kantha quilts, wool throws, layers of pottery and baskets. “To me, a laundry is not just utilitarian; I like to display its things in a lovely way,” says Braund.

Outdoor Porches BJORK STUDIO AND KOLO COLLECTION WITH SUNBRELLA To play up the rooftop’s expansive square footage and unbeatable views, Atlanta design firms Bjork Studio and Kolo Collection collaborated with outdoor textile giant Sunbrella (which the latter retails) to create a collective dream of a Hollywood-glam outdoor party space. Kolo’s Michelle Martin envisioned the French doors flung open, revelers filtering in and out freely and gathering in intimate conversation groups—perhaps around the fire pit—or dining at the custom Skylar Morgan table. A blackand-white striped pergola above touts tassels made from Sunbrella’s signature solution-dyed yarns, the result of an abiding partnership between the brand and Bjork’s upholstery workshop. Bjork also created the custom color-blocked ottomans, made completely new cushions for three chic lines of outdoor furnishings—Brown Jordan, Dedon and Cane-line— and even fashioned round ball pillows inspired by vintage Palm Springs. “They’re literally just for fun,” says Martin. “You can throw them at your friends during the party.”

Architecture J. RYAN DUFFEY AND JEREMY GRIFFIN, J. RYAN DUFFEY ARCHITECT INC. This exactingly engineered stick-frame, brick-clad structure was the first commercial venture for J. Ryan Duffey’s eponymous, 4-year-old Buckhead practice. But it is undoubtedly this well-admired architect’s experience with residential design—particularly his mindfulness about where furniture is placed within a space—that has imbued it with such unquestionable charm. When Duffey’s firm learned, two years in, that the penthouse would become a showhouse, he was delighted to upgrade some of its interior features; though the residence still features a wallet-friendly, simplistic trim package, Duffey worked in tandem with designer Melanie Davis to select striking finishes like the local LG Hausys Viatera quartz countertops, richly finished oak floors reclaimed from a textile mill, progressively styled Circa Lighting fixtures, Porcelanosa tiles and mixed metal hardware (white bronze, light bronze, oil-rubbed bronze) seen throughout. 70

Landscape Architecture LUCINDA BRAY AND TYNE MARTINEZ, FLORALIS GARDEN DESIGN & LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
Endeavoring to achieve a sense of place despite the design site’s unusual location (perched upon the roof of Serenbe’s Textile Lofts), “it was important to establish the feeling of outdoor ‘rooms’—mimicking the architecture inside the penthouse, but also carrying that sense of containment past the walls and into the open air,” explains landscape architect Lucinda Bray, who worked alongside design partner Tyne Martinez to create a cohesive, but multifaceted scheme along the roof’s noticeably sprawling square footage. Transforming a formerly utilitarianlooking plane are artificial turf and lush container plantings of ferns, succulents and more that soften the lines of the surrounding hardscape. The ground-floor courtyard also received the duo’s expertise—via simple teak furnishings and a custom copper spa. Care of Diamond Spas, the water element is more than accommodating of Mother Nature; it will patina marvelously.

THE LEGENDARY RIVERS OF EUROPE have long been celebrated in both prose and song. Serving as major highways during ancient times, these waterways have continued their crucial roles as both sources of sustenance and avenues of transportation. Throughout history, major cities, villages and medieval strongholds have been built along their banks. The Main and Rhine rivers in Germany are unspoiled examples of this, offering captivating sights that include hillside castles, terraced vineyards and verdant valleys. The rivers are also ever-increasing in popularity as vacation options providing a means to entertainment, exploration and relaxation. Emerald Waterways, the more affordable sister to Scenic 74

The most common, the Panorama Balcony Suite, is 180 square feet of elegance, with a huge window wall overlooking the river. The beds are super comfortable, and storage is plentiful, which is an unusual and welcomed plus. No expense was spared on fixtures in all of the cabins, including sumptuous linens, top-quality Bose speakers, and Duravit and Grohe bathroom appointments. Flat screen TVs and minirefrigerators add to the cabin’s serviceability. A stunning innovation on Emerald Star replaces the tattered Do Not Disturb card that normally flaps on a door handle—there is a button inside each cabin that illuminates a tiny light on the baseboard in the hallway, letting housekeepers know when it’s not a good time for service. Cabin choices are varied. In addition to the Panorama Balcony Suite, on the lower deck Standard Staterooms are 162 square feet and have a fixed window. For the ultimate luxury experience, there are four two-room Owner’s Suites that are 315 square feet, and eight Grand Balcony Suites, which are one-room cabins, measuring 210 square feet. Besides enhanced room amenities, passengers in a Grand Balcony Suite or Owner’s Suite may order room service breakfast and receive complimentary cocktail-hour hors d’oeuvres and after-dinner sweets. Guests occupying an Owner’s Suite also get a coveted invitation to dine with the captain. The ship’s cuisine, served in Reflections restaurant, is based on local ingredients and specialties. Breakfast and lunch buffets, each featuring multiple chef stations for made-to-order dishes, are ridiculously plentiful and varied. Weather permitting, special lunch and dinner buffets are held on the open sun deck at various times throughout the cruise. Dinner offers a “Chef’s Favourites” menu as well as a more extensive one from which diners can choose an appetizer, soup, main course and dessert (or cheese). The dinner menu changes daily, but there are always standard choices of Caesar salad, steak frites, poached salmon or grilled chicken breast for the less adventurous. Accompanying wines and beers are from the region as well, and some uncommon wines (Sylvaner, Prädikat and Rotling—which is a blend of light and red grapes) are poured in addition to more common Rieslings and Müller-Thurgaus. Because you won’t find hot nightlife or sprawling casinos, the appeal of a river cruise is simple: You unpack once, and get to see an immense swathe of countryside without having to navigate train schedules or rent a car. In addition, most river cruises are adults-only. River-sailing ships tend to attract a more sophisticated—and yes, older—crowd, though young travelers shouldn’t be deterred if they’re more concerned with destinations than with onboard parties. For the Nuremberg to Amsterdam cruise on the Main and Rhine rivers (and reverse), the Emerald Star crew encourages guests to tap in to the heart and soul of Germany, beginning with the printed guides placed in each cabin that describe the country’s history and customs, and even a mini lesson in speaking German. THERE ARE CERTAIN DESTINATIONS whose name alone evokes luxury. Palm Beach, Florida, is undoubtedly one of them. It all began in 1911, when American industrialist Henry Flagler founded the town as a wellheeled retreat for socialites and politicians. As it continued to develop, Palm Beach served as a winter haven for iconic American families, such as the Vanderbilts and the Kennedys, and can more recently count design mogul Jonathan Adler among its seasonal residents. There’s enough star power—past and present—to put it on par with nearly any high-end resort town in the world. It’s easy to see why 10 presidents have checked into the revered retreat. While only three hours north of Atlanta, the air is cooler and lighter, with that je ne sais quoi that lured Edwin Wiley Grove more than a century ago. Or taking part in a traditional tea ceremony at a private plantation in China. Maybe take a drive along the Amalfi coast in a candy-red Ferrari followed by an elephant ride for the kids. The sky is the limit. But then there’s that budget, and wrangling all the moving parts. And research. And planning. And, and, and… Booking travel yourself isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Better to let a human advise you, not a computer. The number of people booking trips through a travel advisor is growing—after frustrating experiences arranging their own vacations or with online agencies, travelers are craving the 88

Long story short, they were treated like royalty and he came back to me saying that he will always try to stay in a Virtuoso hotel in the future because of the personal recognition he got. What’s more, he and I are already planning a trip to Africa. I obviously earned his trust by providing something he couldn’t get on his own. The whole network is the way I am able to do that.” When asked what’s the next big thing coming in luxury travel, Betty Jo Currie doesn’t hesitate. “I see the integration of sharing platforms with bespoke travel planning—how to marry Airbnbs and other creative accommodations with the best in activities in any given destination. Forget what you’ve heard, the dining room just got its groove back—just in time for the holiday season—and Marcia explains why.
I
S EVERYTHING OLD NEW AGAIN? My college-age child recently enlisted me to help her buy a dining table, so she can start hosting dinner parties. (I immediately sought out a competent audiologist before calling her back.) Like their grandmothers before them, this eternally optimistic, fresh-faced generation is not just excited about food (just have a look at their Instagram feeds), but pumped about the table—inviting friends over, styling it up and, finally, noshing into the evening. (Even if there are lots of standup’s and sit-down’s for the ever-present smart-phone photography.) In fact, I may as well gift her the Tiffany dishes I’ve been saving for her trousseau. While it may seem that just yesterday, dining rooms were going the way of the local public library, it seems that America has realized that standing around the kitchen and wolfing down microwave meals while swiping through our

smart phones does not make for a tender family moment. Yes, we’re tired of all that open-kitchen living and screen time (can a screen, after all, give you a hug?), and, consequently, design professionals are seeing the reemergence of fine china and silver, serving dishes and authentic dining room furniture. No, the dining room is not the place for that shag carpet. Nor is it the place for children’s toys or the leftover Victorian furniture from Grandma’s house. It is time to get down with dining room design. Today, more families—and by families, I also mean groups of single Millennials—are realizing the importance of taking mealtime seriously. There are double light fixtures to be hung, buffets to be filled with china, crystal and flea market finds, and tables to be set with élan. From antique Biedermeier to glass-topped marble plinths, the dining room just got its groove back.
