Throughout our 35-year tenure, the magazine has been fortunate to have been invited behind the doors of many historic homes, from the Governor’s Mansion to residences designed by lauded local architects such as Philip T. Shutze, Lewis “Buck” Crook and Neel Reid, among others. Regardless of their historic nature, there have been a select few residences we’ve had the opportunity to photograph more than once—such as a Buckhead abode originally renovated by Neel Reid, page 28, which appears in Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles for a third time (each incarnation with different homeowners). Also gracing our pages for a third time this is a Carole Weaks-designed residence, page 14, that has stylishly evolved over the course of 20-plus years with the same design-loving client. In Atlanta, we hold our homes—and our surroundings— dear. More so than the clothes we don or the cars we drive, our homes are a mirror reflection of our personalities, and we look to them to provide the foundation for a life well-lived. As we prepare our 35thanniversary issue next month, we are grateful to live in a city that indulges in its homes!

Paint Perfection FARROW & BALL has introduced nine new paint colors, ranging from an exotic pink and a downto-earth blue to a soft off-white (School House White No. 291, its lightest hue, is pictured). Known for its extraordinary depth of color, Farrow & Ball paints are blended with rich pigments; School House White is pared back and familiar— without the cool undertones of contemporary neutrals. Inspired by authentic block-print textiles culled from his global travels, Atlanta designer CLAY MCLAURIN reinterprets the evocative, rhythmic patterns on pure lightweight linen in his debut collection with RH. The artful geometric motifs capture the faded, distressed character of the hand-printed originals, an homage to their rich heritage. WEAKS Known for creating beautiful homes throughout the South— and for shattering the glass ceiling for female designers—Weaks has forever changed the landscape of the profession in our region WRITTEN BY Suzanna

Cullen Hamilton

EARLY DAYS

BUSINESS IS BORN Weaks began her advertising career in the late 1980s in Atlanta; however, a side project designing offices for an insurance company forever changed her business trajectory. “The referrals didn’t stop once I designed that office,” says Weaks. Atlanta was booming in the 1990s and Weaks’ timing was perfect. “My business has always been word of mouth and referrals,” 14

says Weaks. Her most significant project resulted from a realtor’s call who asked her to help a home buyer to envision the potential of a house. The client bought the house, and Carole has designed many homes for the family for over 20 years. “Always take the call,” is one of Weaks’ mantras to younger designers.

SHATTERING THE SOUTHEASTERN CEILING In 2002 Weaks was the first female to win the Southeastern Designer of the Year award—a pivotal point in her career and for design in the South. “After 2002, many

“I’m a true Athenian,” says Carole Weaks, a native of Athens and a graduate of the University of Georgia. A journalism major, Weaks acknowledges that “the marketing and communications skills I learned in college have proved most valuable in my interior design career.”

talented women won and we began to see great changes in the field,” says Weaks. Weaks is a highly prolific designer throughout the United States; however, her focus remains on the Southeast. The majority of her clients originate in Atlanta, but a substantial portion of her portfolio involves designing second homes in Highlands, North Carolina; Sea Island, Georgia; and Vero Beach, Florida. “Design is an evolutionary process so we make changes to accommodate the life-changes of our clients,” says Weaks. Remarking on a project she recently designed for the third time, Weaks says, “they were ready to see things in a new way, so we moved things around and gave it a fresh look.”

ON THE HORIZON Throughout her 25-year career, Weaks has participated in numerous showhouses across the South. “This year it’s a great compliment to be the Honorary Chair of the Holiday House,” says Weaks. While Weaks might feel honored, it’s an equal cachet to have her talented and experienced hand at the helm.

this page and opposite “My goal is to put things in a house that will wear well and that clients will continue to be drawn to for years,” says Carole Weaks; pictured is a residence she’s refreshed three times (each incarnation has appeared in Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles) in the last 20 years. “It’s an interesting evolution how a client’s taste develops over the years, and as designers, we walk that path with them.”

CHIC CHINTZ

Chintz—the bright and breezy printed cotton so frequently associated with designers such as Dorothy Draper and Mario Buatta—has a storied past spanning centuries and continents

The Dutch East India Company began trading in 1602, and the subsequent influx of spices, tea, china and fabrics into Europe brought about tremendous influences that remain today. Originally created with woodblocks, chintz featured brightly colored designs based on Mughal art, Islamic art and Persian scenes printed onto light-colored, glazed cotton fabrics.

left Aviary—a chintz printed on a white linen ground and then glazed—is Madeaux by Richard Smith through Ainsworth-Noah. above Margaret Kirkland uses Bowood, a classic Colefax and Fowler design.

Europeans and British were so enamored with chintz draperies and bed hangings that in 1720 the fabric was banned from further import because French and English mills could not compete with the beautiful imported fabrics. However, the Court of Versailles was exempt from those bans, and since chintz was favored not only for home furnishings, but also for clothing, chintz continued to be imported. When the French finally determined how to produce the colorful floral cotton prints, toile de Jouy was created and it remains a perennial favorite in the design industry three centuries later. Not to be outdone, George Washington created an entire bedroom in chintz at Mount Vernon in 1799, thereby elevating the design in America.

CHARACTERISTICS AND CONSTRUCTION The glaze on chintz is one of the defining characteristics of the fabric. It was favored in the 18th and 19th centuries for its water and stain repellency, and it remains a popular feature not only because of the finish but also for its durability when used on upholstery. That said, the softness and patina of well-worn chintz is a hallmark of interiors that were once glossy, but now retain the elegance of a timeless classic. Although chintz can be printed on a colored cotton, historically, the patterns were always printed on a white or ivory background.

MASS MARKET Chintz has remained an enduring favorite for 500 years. From India to Europe to Britain to the United States, chintz has been used on furniture, draperies, bed hangings, walls and clothing. Today the market is abundant with options ranging from historically accurate patterns and techniques to mass-market reproductions. From fabric to wallpaper, chintz continues to add a smattering of color and pattern to interiors. 17

& NOTABLE: BUCKHEAD Written and Produced by

LORI JOHNSTON PHIPPS PLAZA

BUCKHEAD VILLAGE

BUCKHEAD’S RETAIL AND RESTAURANT resurgence continues to advance as the holiday season approaches. Atlanta mainstays are joining the dining scene, with Biltong Bar opening a second location in The Shops Buckhead Atlanta, and Castellucci Hospitality Group diversifying, with The Iberian Pig expected to open in this winter in Hanover Buckhead Village. “Iberian Pig is not only one of our most established brands, but it’s also one of our most loved brands, and it has such a great following in Decatur,” says owner Fred Castellucci. Castellucci says the location next to Buckhead Theatre and walkability in the village district’s redevelopment were appealing when deciding on the second location. Atlanta’s Fifth Group Restaurants also

continues to increase its following throughout the metro area with a third location of Ecco expected to open this month outside Phipps Plaza. Ecco will be housed in a new 5,984-square-foot building at Peachtree and Wieuca roads. Phipps and Lenox Square will have outposts of Revelator Coffee, while other Lenox additions include Casper, Da Vinci’s Donuts and Nespresso. Phipps’ new dining options include Grand Lux Cafe, Genuine Pizza’s first Atlanta location and Daniel Reed’s Public Kitchen & Bar (from Savannah), while fashion boutique Jeffrey has expanded to an 11,922-square-foot store. Phipps’ transformation will continue with a Nobu hotel and restaurant, Life Time Athletic fitness center and 12-story, Class A office building in a mixed-use addition.

CONSTRUCTION TIMELINES & PRICES “I haven’t seen any kind of reduction in construction costs, and I’m not seeing any sort of reduced timeline. Steel was expensive before, but it’s even more expensive now. We’ve started to redesign the project not to include the steel, or to include a lot less of it. We generally warn clients that what we tell them, as far as a price per square foot, could likely change by the time we finish designing the project. Every couple of months they seem to be creeping up even higher.” —Architect Jordache K. Avery with XMETRICAL, a residential and commercial firm, who adds that custom projects now take 12 to 16 months. 20

AROUND TOWN WITH

Naomi Von Habersham IF YOU’VE BEEN AROUND AS LONG AS I HAVE, you’ve likely seen fashion trends come and go, only to return years later. Twice over the last five decades, I’ve seen the midi touted as the hottest length for skirts and dresses. Gucci handbags have been the rage three times in my adulthood. That recent fad, athleisure wear? So far, I have only had to live through that once. Actually, that’s not quite true. How could I forget the leg warmer trend of the 1980s? The same holds true for interior design, but like fashion, if something manages to survive for long enough, it becomes a classic. Think wallpaper. Not too long ago, we were told that wallpaper was “in” again. Really? I never knew that it had been “out.” Wallpaper is a classic in my book. So, too, with chintz, although like wallpaper, the fabric is hotter at times than others. Once, when a magazine editor claimed that chintz was coming back, Mario Buatta, aka the Prince of Chintz, quipped, “I didn’t know it had gone anywhere.” My sentiments exactly. Although I fret often about what seems to be slipping away to obscurity—the morning newspaper, the telephone landline, civility—I’m not quite as concerned about classic design, at least in the South. If there is one area of the country where we will (hopefully) not allow design traditions to die, it’s here. Southern designers young and old remain committed to timeless blue-and-white ceramics. And classic fabrics of every ilk can be found in our homes: stripes, floral chintzes, small geometrics, silks and linens. Dining rooms may have faded away in other parts of the country, but not here. Look at the homes of Atlanta’s young designers; not only do they have traditional dining rooms, they have sideboards too. Classic design is so ingrained in our Southern DNA that I can’t envision a future without it, but let’s not get complacent. Actively working, and living, with these design traditions will help to ensure the survival of the dining room, wallpaper and, yes, chintz.

FTER MEETING DURING THEIR FRESHMAN year at Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration and forming an instant friendship, Anthony Vipond and Chef Chad Crete began throwing weekly dinner parties for their friends. “With so many late-night cooking sessions, farmers market runs and entertaining together, it was only natural that we dreamed of opening our own restaurant someday,” says Crete. “After a life-changing trip to Asia in 2015, we decided to start making that dream a reality.” Enter Whiskey Bird, the duo’s welcoming Morningside restaurant at which Vipond serves as general manager and Crete as executive chef. The layout emphasizes the bar and kitchen, “almost as if you’re walking into our own openconcept kitchen as a guest in our home,” says Crete. The cuisine, a combination of Asian and American flavors, is equally as comfortable—think dishes such as yakitori, Korean rice cakes, crispy brussels sprouts and Hong Kong sliders. “After our travels throughout Asia, we wanted to find a way to translate some of the amazing dishes and flavors so that they would be approachable but still fun and unique,” says Crete. “There are a lot of Asian ingredients and cooking techniques that parallel those of other cultures, and we wanted to bridge those gaps and create dishes that are unexpected, uninhibited and unforgettable.” eatwhiskeybird.com

ATLANTANS HAVE LONG ADMIRED THIS BUCKHEAD HOME WITH THE turquoise front door. The home has seen many reincarnations since a renovation by Neel Reid circa 1920, two of which have been documented in the pages of Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles. First published in 2009, and then once again in 2013, Atlanta design firm Margaux Interiors Limited was responsible for the home’s well-outfitted interiors on both occasions. When the home’s current owners purchased the historic property, they wanted to work with someone who knew the home’s intricacies inside and out, which meant interior designer Clary Bosbyshell of Margaux Interiors was a natural fit for the project. But before Bosbyshell could guide the California transplants through chintz and chinoiserie options, the home’s layout needed to be addressed. To help the home live in a more contemporary fashion, architect Charles Heydt finessed the floor plan, opening up the wall between the kitchen and dining room, and

then switching the dining room and family room, so that the latter was now open to the kitchen. He also introduced steel-and-glass doors in the new family room, providing a much-needed connection to the backyard. “When this home was first built, they were operating at a time when nobody lived in the back of their homes, which was typically reserved for servants,” says Heydt. “But today’s family lives in the kitchen and appreciates a much more open floor plan.” The lighter and brighter kitchen is now undoubtedly the hub of the home for the couple and their two young children. Bosbyshell took the lead in the kitchen design, mixing brass and stainless accents and suggesting a bookmatched marble backsplash for a clean yet elegant effect. A custom banquette in the adjoining 35

breakfast nook lends a whimsical touch and is well suited for both family meals and entertaining guests. As expected, working with a 100-plusyear-old home comes with its set of structural challenges, and contractor Jim DeLany of Paces Builder Group was up to the task. “Classical home renovations require a meticulous eye. It takes a certain level of skill and attention to drawings,” says Heydt in reference to DeLany’s exacting execution and commitment to preserving the home’s historical integrity while also making it functional. This marriage of past and present was also always top of mind for Bosbyshell. “The goal for this renovation was bringing the home into 2018 but also respecting its historical bones and keeping with its grandeur,” she explains. It’s a concept best exemplified upon first entering the home and stepping into the formal living room. Here, the designer skillfully employed a restrained color palette along with cleanlined furnishings so as not to detract from the room’s exquisite antique shell, the highlight of which is original millwork by Neel Reid. While the front of the home lives decidedly more formal (perfect for hosting elegant occasions), the back of the home— in a nod to the clients’ former California lifestyle—accommodates more casual living and entertaining. “It was really special to give both the house and the family a new beginning,” says Bosbyshell. “This is one of my favorite historic homes in Atlanta and it was an honor to polish it up once again.” See Resources, page six. 37

Inside Out The benefits of having a skilled design-build team in place are most evident in the rear of the residence. Paces Builder Group executed Heydt’s vision of creating a connection to the outdoors via steel-and-glass doors off the family room as well as a new door in the breakfast nook bay. Landscape architect Alec Michaelides led a complete landscape overhaul to deliver a space fit for entertaining, while Bosbyshell outfitted it with furnishings from Kolo Collection and Frontgate umbrellas. F

FITTING IN DOESN’T NECESSARILY MEAN giving up one’s own personality. For example, the three-bedroom brick abode that architect William H. Harrison and interior designer Karen Ferguson designed for empty nesters in Brookhaven has a traditional gabled form that allows it to blend in with the neighboring homes. Inside, however, it’s a different story. “These clients are hip, and they were ready for something sexy and more modern,” Ferguson explains. The duo drove the point home in the front foyer, where a contemporary steel stairway with walnut treads appears to float in the space. While the sculptural element makes a grand first impression, it’s barely visible from the front sidewalk. “The brick columns create a veil that hides the modern element behind it,” Harrison says. This effortless blend of old and new is a hallmark of this residence’s design. A black-painted center island, for example, juxtaposes the white shiplap walls and perimeter cabinetry in the spacious kitchen. The neutral palette flows into the sprawling living room, which is divided into two distinct seating areas. In one, a simple pendant light illuminates a quartet of barrel-back swivel chairs nestled around a square cocktail table. In the other, plush sofas face the tailored limestone fireplace. Texture in the form of linens, leathers and hair on hide add interest to the white walls and walnut flooring. “They wanted a modern house with no clutter, and throughout the project, I had to remind them of that,” Ferguson says, pointing to the simple metal lantern-style chandelier over the custom dining table and skirted chairs. “It’s open and airy. We didn’t want anything fussy.” Both the living and dining areas have a floorto-ceiling glass NanaWall sliding door system that opens to a brick-walled loggia with bluestone tile flooring. For much of the year, all the doors are open, creating a large indoor-outdoor space that is ideal for entertaining. 49

There’s another balcony off of the master suite, where leatherwrapped sconces flank an upholstered bed dressed in sumptuous neutral bedding. Lack of color is also a defining characteristic of the en suite bathroom, which is clad with veiny white marble. “It feels like you’re in a cloud,” Ferguson says. You could say the same about the upper-level terrace, which is tucked discreetly into the attic’s roofline. Although the owners originally feared that they would never use the third-floor space, Harrison lobbied hard for it. “You can see all the large buildings

beyond the tree line,” Harrison explains. Outfitted with a fireplace, it has become one of the couple’s favorite spots. Ecstatic about the end result, the homeowners hosted a sitdown dinner to thank everyone involved in the renovation. And although both Ferguson and Harrison had spent months perfecting the project, experiencing the home as a guest provided them with a whole new appreciation for the space. “This is a simple house full of natural light and beautiful views,” Harrison says. “That’s a really nice way to live.” See Resources, page six. 53

Personal Space The interiors of this Buckhead abode are wholly personalized to the new homeowners thanks to Bradley, who worked in tandem with builder Siegel Construction & Design.

W WHEN A PAIR OF HOMEOWNERS happened upon a turnkey, six-bedroom Buckhead new-build by Siegel Construction & Design, they were immediately struck by its open, airy floorplan and flowing natural light. Even the front door—typically a mode of passage rendered in wood or in metal— was remarkably absent, replaced by one of the steel-and-glass variety. Suddenly, the couple’s comparatively tame Brookhaven abode, with its compartmentalized floor plans and dimmer rooms, appeared in stark contrast. Seeking a space that would capitalize on their desire for happy, light-filled spaces, the couple purchased the home before it was completed. Siegel Construction embraced the opportunity to work with clients to tweak the design. As firm co-owner Kathy Siegel sat down with the family to complete their dream home, she took note of their aesthetic preferences: timeless and traditional, but with a modern farmhouse twist. Siegel ascertained that Jessica Bradley, an established Atlanta designer with whom she’d collaborated in the past, would make an ideal addition to the project team. With Siegel having already selected most of the home’s finishes—shiplap, painted brick, subway tile, stainless steel, aged brass—Bradley’s task was twofold: to both subdue and enhance, adding her signature stamp with custom furnishings, fabrics, light fixtures, paint and other finishing

touches intended to amplify the home’s attractive architecture while softening its starker lines. Ultimately, Siegel had provided the perfect canvas, so Bradley, a forwardthinking traditionalist, sought to warm up the residence with a predominantly neutral palette—but one splashed with carefully chosen accent colors (apricot, lavender, sage) that allow the clients’ impressive art collection to shine. To wit, natural textures—seagrass, rope, walnut—complement components like the cypress ceiling beams and bleached white-oak kitchen island without detracting from them. “With this house, I think it was about bringing a level of softness to it,” Bradley explains. “It’s full of iron and metal and a lot of wood textures and stone. The central challenge was to soften it.” It’s a bit edgy, yes, but still rooted in the classic concepts Bradley has championed throughout her career. And that aforementioned front

door? Bradley chose to treat it like any French version, cleverly framing it with draperies. “The front door is large, but this allows them to have the ability to close it off easily for privacy if needed at night,” the designer notes. “I love the way [the fabric] brings elegance and beauty to that metal.” At every turn, textiles were key to infusing the home’s contemporary lines with subtle character. Even the family room’s curvaceous white upholstery is covered in a stain-treated fabric, which comes in handy when the couple’s two teens—and their friends—

are piling in. Plus, with a Purdue alum in the house, the room also revolves around hosting football watch parties throughout the fall. “It was important for them to have a home they could open up to others, and to really live in it,” Bradley explains. “They eat spaghetti in the living room while watching TV. He drinks red wine on the sofa,” Bradley notes, also pointing out the spacious wine cellar Siegel placed at one end of the butler’s pantry. “It’s a blood pressure-reducing home—even with the sense of exposure that could come from so much glass. It’s hospitable. It’s comfortable. It’s a place for happy memories.” See Resources, page six. 63

LIFE

END NOTE

PIMENTO CHEESE & PECAN PIE

PIMENTO CHEESE DOES NOT USUALLY MAKE AN appearance at the Thanksgiving table, but this year it’s going to be my star ingredient. Having spent entirely too much time on the left coast, I’ve developed an unusual penchant for fine Southern foods, particularly those that include okra, collards, grits and pimento cheese. This year, I’m honing in on my Southern roots for Thanksgiving. I’ve cooked up a few elaborate Thanksgiving meals in my time, including stuffed Cornish game hens and the Barefoot Contessa’s turkey breast—rather refined for this year’s focus on simple Southern foods. While some dear readers might prefer to dine on turkey and stuffing, I’m focused on a meal that oozes Southern flavors from a bacon-seasoned skillet. This year, I’m cooking up a dish I like to call “Thanks68

giving supper in a cast-iron skillet with a side of pimento cheese.” I think it will pair well with a glass of pinot noir in one hand and the television remote flicking through college football games in the other. I can fry bacon in my skillet then use the drippings to slow-simmer the collard greens. Then I’ll use more drippings to fry the okra and make baconinfused pimento cheese biscuits in my cast-iron skillet. Finally, after much seasoning, I’ll cook my turkey. Put all of that on a platter with a side of pimento cheese grits and it will be divine. And that Black Friday turkey sandwich? Mine will be grilled pimento cheese with turkey. Everyone has their own version of the perfect Thanksgiving meal. I’ll be serving the Southern Classic Redux. Happy Thanksgiving and cheers—with pimento cheese!

ab bout the showhouse

Every year, Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles presents the Home for the Holidays Designer Showhouse, a tradition that rings in the holiday season while showcasing the work of Atlanta’s top design-industry talents. We are proud to have showhouse proceeds benefit Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, the largest healthcare provider for children in Georgia and one of the largest pediatric clinical care providers in the country. This year’s showhouse is a newly built, 8,200-square-foot Buckhead estate nestled on a 1.5-acre lot. The home features the work of top Atlanta designers, as well as the talents of architecture firm Harrison Design and builder Steve McGlamery in partnership with Blackstone Custom Homes. Inspired by the portfolio of 19th-century British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, the five-bedroom home includes a lush backyard, a pool, a spacious covered porch, 11-foot ceilings, three

Emma Anderson Honorary Junior Chair Eight-year-old Emma Anderson “gives the best hugs,” says her mother, Robin. Her favorite subjects in school are math and writing (Robin is a math teacher), and she adores animals—both alive and plush. Emma was also born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, which is a severe congenital heart defect where the left side is not developed; Emma basically has half a heart. She’s had three hospital stays for open-heart surgery at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, where, luckily, she and her family met Uno, a golden retriever therapy dog. “Uno made her smile and comforted her,” Robin says. “When Uno came in the room, you could sense Emma just relax and forget about all of the wires and tubes and needles that were hooked up to her causing her so much pain.” Now, more than three years since her last surgery, the bright, creative and resilient third-grader completed her first triathlon in July 2018, and she has been a member of her local yearround swim team for three years. “Emma received top-notch care while at Egleston during all of her hospital stays,” says Robin. “My husband and I also were treated with love and warmth and were offered anything that we needed while there.” DAVID CHRISTENSEN

ohn Fernandez’s portfolio showcases a history of interiors ranging from traditional European design to clean contemporary. The Cuban-born designer honed his craft in New Orleans, where he began his career at a high-end furniture store in the French Quarter. His published work, both national and local, caught the eye of clients who commissioned him to work on projects throughout the U.S. and abroad. These commissions led him to design homes in New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Palm Springs, West Palm Beach, San Francisco, Jackson Hole, Houston, New Orleans, Atlanta, Miami, Nantucket and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Fernandez has an intuitive ability to understand what the client wishes to achieve, and then relies on his talent to interpret it, design it and deliver it. From dark and sexy, to light and serene, every project is an opportunity to create a new story.
