THE OUTDATED KITCHEN of this Georgian-style home wasn’t part of the homeowners’ initial renovation plan when working with interior designer James Wheeler. “We were actually saving it for round two,” he says. “But one day the wife went to open the oven door and it fell off, making the need pretty immediate.” The homeowners were more than happy to bid farewell to the kitchen’s builder-grade cabinetry and worn-out appliances in favor of something that was better equipped to serve their busy family, as well as their shared passion for cooking. Kitchen designer Lisa Brooks was enlisted to modify the layout, which she accomplished by creating expanded pantry and refrigeration columns and relocating the “cooking zone” with a new commercial range, directly opposite of the sink wall for symmetry and increased functionality. A pot filler adds a layer of convenience to the family’s beloved pasta nights.

While the home’s Georgian flourishes inspired enduring elements (its honed pewter hood, for example), Wheeler was equally compelled to capture the fun yet sophisticated spirit of the young couple by opting for moody blue-gray cabinets that feel unexpectedly fresh. To balance the dark, saturated color (Farrow & Ball’s “Black Blue”), Wheeler sourced slabs of white dolomite marble for the counters and full-height backsplash. The latter was at the request of the wife, who “didn’t ever want to scrub spaghetti sauce out of grout again,” jokes Wheeler. Designing down to the smallest of details, he suggested walnut inserts behind often-visible features, such as the glass and morning bar cabinetry, to mimic the richness of the dark hardwood floors. Brass hardware and accents also add warmth to the space. When it’s time for meals—or homework—the family now piles into the cozy breakfast nook, where velvet and linen textures help soften the kitchen’s harder surfaces. “They love to cook, celebrate, enjoy each other’s company and the kitchen now really encompasses all of that,” says Wheeler. WHEN A PAIR OF EMPTY NESTERS with a penchant for entertaining asked their go-to designer Chaz Easterly to look over recently completed plans for their new—and final—home, things took an unexpected turn. “The wife was envisioning an American farmhouse look—black counters with white cabinetry and dark hardwoods—but the focal point was a large steel window over the sink and I knew we had to take it in another direction,” says Easterly. Specifically, a more European direction. Easterly introduced the wife to white oak and she was instantly onboard with a lighter and brighter scheme that imbued Old World charm but in a more modern manner. For example, a plaster hood, earthy colored tumbled tile backsplashes and unlacquered brass hardware add texture and patina, while hidden appliances and clean lines keep the look neat and tidy. Spec cabinets were swapped for custom, and they were scaled just right for the wife. To accommodate her shorter height, an abundance of lower storage was maximized. For this reason, in lieu of upper cabinets Easterly opted for open shelving that provided visual appeal by displaying a collection of vases and other ceramic ware—also a nod to European country homes. The large center island, which routinely serves as the workhorse during gatherings, is topped with honed quartz for ease. Woven barstools were customized with a performance fabric. THE OWNERS OF THIS ATLANTA HOME presented designers Joel Kelly and Whitney Ray with a tall order: Show them something they had never seen before. “They’re the first clients we’ve ever had where we would present them things and they would say, ‘Show us something cooler,’” says Kelly. “It was refreshing because they were always pushing us to take it to the next level, which is what we, as designers, love to do.” With the sky as the limit, the hood was wrapped in a Zebrino marble and became an artistic focal point in the space. Directly underneath, the designers selected a dark semiprecious quartz stone, not only for durability, but because its organic pattern provides a striking visual balance to marble’s distinctive linear bands. With the kitchen the heart of the home—connecting to the great room, living room and dining room—extra consideration was given to make the space look less utilitarian and more like a cohesive extension of its surroundings. Kelly and Ray worked with cabinet designer Natalia Makarova of Karpaty to create millwork with a subtle chevron pattern that reads more like wallpaper. The design was extended to the ceiling, where rounded corners offer space for the addition of a sliding ladder to access upper cabinets. Meanwhile, white enamel cabinetry on the island and sink wall provides “some relief between all of the different patterns,” notes Ray. Keeping in mind the homeowners’ directive to “always think outside the box,” Kelly designed the kitchen’s oversize hardware with a textured finish. WITH BENECKI AT THE HELM, the term “spec home” takes on a different meaning. After scooping up a 1970s Buckhead property, they assembled a team of talents to transform it into an airy abode more suitable for today’s open-concept lifestyle. Cydney Mitchell of Source and Natalia Makarova of Karpaty took lead in the kitchen’s design. “Originally, the kitchen was this small room that felt disconnected from the rest of the house, both physically and visually,” says Makarova. “The goal was to make it feel like it belongs by opening it up to the main living areas and just letting it breathe.” With the walls removed and the previous kitchen taken down to the studs, Mitchell and Makarova went to the drawing board, devising a way to make the new kitchen effortlessly match the freshened up aesthetics of the adjoining family and breakfast rooms.

To complement the modern lines of the connected spaces, they decided on flush millwork panels, fabricated by Karpaty. While it offers a crisp and tidy look, the white oak was finished with a chocolate brown water-based stain for something more graphic. “This allows the grain to bleed through and provide texture, so when you’re in the space, it doesn’t feel stark at all,” explains Makarova. Its deep coloring also lets the kitchen’s marble niche— dreamed up by Mitchell—serve as the star of the space. While seemingly simple in form with its waterfall ledge, the niche was, in fact, a complex task that included absorbing some of the garage and seamlessly integrating the hood, of which the bottom is marble too. WHILE BLESSED WITH HISTORIC CHARM, this 1920s Buckhead home had a problem common to a lot of older dwellings: a cramped, oddly shaped kitchen. So the homeowners, who love to cook and entertain, enlisted kitchen expert David Cook of Design Galleria Kitchen and Bath Studio to create a brighter, more functional space. Though a wall between the kitchen and dining room had previously been removed to allow for a more open-concept feeling, a peninsula with a cooktop awkwardly divided the two spaces. A narrow opening adjacent to the peninsula offered the only pathway between the rooms. “Making both areas work together seamlessly was the biggest challenge,” says Cook. He played with options that reconfigured the existing kitchen, but in a light bulb moment, Cook decided to “just change everything,” flipping the kitchen and dining spaces. “Once we swapped the rooms, things just started falling into place and the layout made much more sense,” he explains. A 9-foot steel window now anchors the sink wall, and additional prep space came in the form of a central island that also creates better flow to the new dining area, where a plush custom banquette is flanked by hutches—one for glass and serve ware and the other for storing coats, dog leashes and more. Given the home’s small footprint, maximum efficiency was always top of mind. It’s also what inspired the integration of a bar into the dining area. When hosting, the couple can serve up drinks not far from the conversation around the table, plus keep an eye on what’s simmering on the range. Presented by Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles and held at Phipps Plaza in October, the 2020 Luxury Living Show provided a center stage for the latest high-end products and thoughtful, sophisticated design for kitchens, baths and outdoor spaces. From modern cabinetry inspired by the past and today’s must-haves for the outdoors to stainless steel accents and luxe embellishments, the dream team of Dove Studio Kitchen & Bath, Morgan Creek Cabinet Company and Floralis Garden Design combined their talents to offer inspiration, ideas and a design haven.

WITH a POLISH

THE CLASSIC WHITE and walnut kitchen received a modern update with stainless steel accents, a clean-lined Neolith hood and eye-catching extras. The warm tones of the Neolith countertops exuded such depth that designer Jenny Lyons of Dove Studio Kitchen & Bath gave the material an even greater role. “It was a beautiful thing to combine the different finishes that were happening in the kitchen and use as the backsplash,” she says. Dove Studio’s Paul Castell says it was part of the inaugural Luxury Living Show in 2010 and returned in 2020 to showcase the newest line of Wood-Mode cabinets and SubZero Wolf appliances. The addition of a double oven and builtin coffee maker also speaks to sought-after elements in today’s kitchens, as do the under-counter and accent LED lighting in the cabinets and drawers. In between those appliances, highly polished stainless steel on the walnut accent cabinet shines as an unexpected decorative element. Bronze hardware on the island adds warm honey tones while matte black hardware stands out on the painted white perimeter cabinets. The island sink is equipped with gadgets, including a removable colander and cutting board, for the utmost in multitasking. TRANSITIONAL ALLURE ANTIQUE WASHSTANDS inspired the design of “his” walnut vanity with its prominent brass legs and splendid extras, such as a leather bottom shelf insert. “We wanted to take that washstand that was found in so many homes at the turn of the century and update it to a style that would fit with modern day homes,” says Ryan DeCesaro of Morgan Creek Cabinet Company. Brass wire mesh detailing and brass hardware on the tall storage cabinet strengthens the tie to the furniture-style vanity. Rounded corners soften “her” vanity, complete with a makeup table in Nantucket blue. The leaded antique mirror panel on the tall storage cabinet accentuates the connection between past and present. Interior lighting, pullouts for hair dryers and other small appliances, shelf and drawer liners and a sink mat combine form with function. The curves of the freestanding acrylic tub complement the “his” and “hers” sides. Caesarstone countertops and satin finishes for the vanity hardware and faucets further unite the spaces.

the OUTDOOR APPEAL FLORALIS GARDEN DESIGN recognized the events of 2020 placed an even greater emphasis on outdoor living. The designers paired artificial turf and custom cast concrete pavers for the foundation of the bright blue outdoor living area. Floralis softened the space with olive trees in containers, which paid homage to the edible gardens that also had a resurgence during the pandemic. Artificial turf is especially popular for families with pets or for properties with drainage challenges, says designer Lucinda Bray. The curved Hartstone paver—from a design drawn by Floralis—infuses a bit of personality and showcases a distinctive design detail in front of the Hestan grill suite. “Every project has a unique piece or a difficult corner or some design element that you want to do that might be a little bit more unique and set that project apart,” Bray says. The curved paver in chaperral, a light gray hue, and other deliberate details give Atlantans even more reasons to appreciate and enjoy their outdoor living areas.

Naomi Von Habersham AFTER WEEKS OF HOLIDAY GLUTTONY that involved eggnog, cheese straws and ham biscuits, my waistline has ballooned. I can forget about buttoning my jeans; when I tried to do so last week, I injured my spleen. Even my oncetrusty Lululemon leggings are no longer slimming. Sure, I can squeeze into them, but they make my thighs look like they’re bound in sausage casings! There’s no question that it’s time for me to embark on a diet, but which one? Do I do keto, or should I follow Marie Osmond’s advice and try Nutrisystem? I’ve heard good things about the cabbage soup diet, but I don’t think I or my digestive system can handle consuming that much cabbage. I’m even tempted by the grapefruit diet, but all of that citric acid gives me pause. I’d like to keep my tooth enamel intact. Like my figure, my kitchen could benefit from a little paring down too, especially since it has become so cluttered as a result of my myriad pandemic projects. Like almost everyone I know, I have spent months cooking and baking to abandon. Now, my kitchen is overflowing with extraneous tools and gadgets, like the french fry cutter and the dough scale which are littering my once-streamlined marble countertops. My kitchen windows are looking messy too, thanks to the cafe curtains that I sewed last summer with help from a YouTube video. Why in the world did I think delicate cotton curtains were a good idea in a space where I’ve been maniacally sautéing and stir-frying for the last seven months? They’re now so stained with cooking splatter that I have no choice but to send them to the trash heap. Life threw a lot at us last year, and if my weight and my oncepristine kitchen are any indication, I let it get the better of me. This year, I resolve to be more disciplined, no matter what 2021 holds for us. I plan to reclaim my size-6 figure, keep an always tidy kitchen and leave the curtain making to the professionals.

IT’S NO SECRET that the restaurant industry was largely impacted by the events of 2020, and as we enter a new year, Atlanta diners continue to face changes on the horizon. “Operating a restaurant nowadays is not for the faint of heart,” says SMITH HANES of restaurant, hospitality and lifestyle design firm Smith Hanes Studio. “Outdoor dining is essential now. Many of our restaurants are investing in portable space heaters and offering blankets to put over your legs for warmth during the colder months.” In addition to outdoor seating, restaurateurs are investing in extra precautions to ensure guests can dine safely and comfortably, including THE SELECT in Sandy Springs, who installed plexiglass dividers between tables and designated separate teams of waiters—one for serving and one for clearing tables—identifiable by different colored gloves. For those who still aren’t sold on dine-in eateries, other gathering options are popping up throughout the city. Grace to you and peace! On behalf of the people of the Cathedral Parish of St. Philip, I welcome you to the 2021 Cathedral Antiques Show!

As we began the process of choosing our beneﬁciary and lining up special guests, little did we know we were on the precipice of a global pandemic. Undaunted by, yet mindful of these challenges, we safely forged ahead. With the hardships caused by COVID-19, the residents, students and others who rely on the services of City of Refuge, need our help now more than ever. The 2008 antiques show funded a fully functioning commercial kitchen on the campus of City of Refuge. In 2020, 12 years and over two million meals later, the facility needs a vital facelift. Our beloved Honorary Chairs Boog and Sam Candler, and our infamous Honorary Architectural Chair Norman Askins agreed that the show must safely go on!

I usually remind guests that the Cathedral is a beautiful and sacred space, but that we are especially a vibrant church community. I remind us that the Cathedral of St. Philip was established in 1847 as the ﬁrst Episcopal Church in Atlanta, and that we moved to our present location here in Buckhead in 1932, where we have grown tremendously since then. Well, that strong spiritual community and growth have been even more evident in the midst of this pandemic, serving socially distanced for the common good.

I am thrilled that the proceeds this year are designated for City of Refuge, a leader in the business of social transformation and who continuously works to empower and equip individuals with the tools to succeed. The proceeds will go toward renovating the 180 Degree Kitchen, a fully operational culinary environment where meals are prepped and served three times a day, 365 days a year. It also acts as a training center for students in their Culinary Arts vocational training program. Finally, I thank each of you for participating in the Cathedral Antiques Show this year. I hope you can visit the Cathedral soon. I hope you can return over and over again for other occasions of service and prayer. We are truly a house of prayer for all people. Your presence, and your prayer, help us fulﬁll that mission of openness and hospitality! May God bless you always,

On Sunday, January 17th, we start things off with an exciting silent auction, which will be completely virtual and full of one-of-akind experiences and items. Our dealers will set up shop virtually and open on Thursday, and our preview party will be Thursday evening livestreamed from the Cathedral. Flower Friday will be a full day of events, culminating with a virtual cocktail party highlighting the best in design with lifestyle experts. Saturday will bring our Tour of Homes, virtually, with the talent of three architects and interior designers as our tour guides. I’d like to thank everyone on our committee in banding together; we pivoted our show against all odds! I’m so thankful for my very understanding family who helped on so many levels. I also want to acknowledge the keystone partnership with David and John Duke at LivingStories.tv, whose creative genius through film have made all this possible. I’d like to thank my co-chair Caroline Wallace, Nancy Rizor and Dan Murphy—who held my hand the whole time and dedicated innumerable hours—and my outstanding committee, who gave their valuable time and talent to make this year’s show possible. CATHEDRAL ANTIQUES SHOW HONORARY CHAIRS, 2021

BOOG & SAM CANDLER “Grace and peace to you and welcome to the Cathedral.” This is the heartfelt salutation that the Very Reverend Samuel Candler, Dean, and his wife, Boog, have faithfully delivered over their 22 years at St. Philip’s Cathedral. Their greeting is translated through lives of service, endowed and sustained by grace and hospitality. Their dedication, leadership and generosity have been a blessing to the Antiques Show and its beneficiaries over these many years. Boog has even been deep in the trenches, most notably as our Show co-chair in 2012. What a joy it is to honor Sam and Boog for their abundant support on this, our milestone 50th anniversary. The Candlers are to the Cathedral and Atlanta community a powerhouse of talent and energy. They share a love for music, education and nature that finds expression in many ways. On the musical score, Sam is a talented pianist who, prior to his priestly calling, intended to become a jazz musician. He brings a lively dimension to parish fundraisers or social events when asked to “tickle the ivories” and sing. Boog’s musical gifts are with the flute and dulcimer, hav-

In their missions relative to education and service, Sam and Boog have achieved impressive levels of skill and scholarship. Sam’s passion for preaching and teaching has been shared with five Episcopal parishes prior to coming to the Cathedral in 1998. He has taught Anglican theology at Emory University, has been trustee for several schools including the Berkeley Divinity School at Yale, and has lectured and preached in England, Costa Rica, Canada and throughout the United States. He has been a deputy to the General Convention of the Episcopal Church for nine terms, serving especially on the Liturgy and Music Committees. Boog’s career foundation is a B.A. in Secondary Education and certification for Interpreting for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired. She has worked with the deaf and hearing impaired in Connecticut and South Carolina and taught preschool (often including music instruction) at Woodward North, Brennan Elementary and the Cathedral Preschool. She has served the Cathedral in Holy Eucharist Instruction and as a board member of several organizations including the Cathedral Bookstore, the Atlanta Opera, Open Hand Atlanta and the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta Commission on Ministry. Concerning mutual love of nature, Sam and Boog share the experience of being raised on their respective family farms—his in Georgia and hers in Maryland. Sam currently serves on the Board of the Cumberland Island Conservancy and Boog on the Board of the Jekyll Island Foundation. Creative reverence for both the environment and the “beauty of the past” once led Boog to form a business of making and selling women’s and children’s clothing by upcycling vintage fabrics. Currently, she is active in the Habersham Garden Club and has served as its president for two years. She enjoys participating in local flower shows, including the Cathedral Flower Festival. As for Sam, many a sermons will expound on the joy and wonder of our earthly, as well as spiritual, surroundings. The Candlers are blessed with three adult children, their spouses, and six wonderful grandchildren. It might be said that their “parenting” of the Cathedral family completes their circle. The Episcopal Church Women and the many Cathedral staff members and clergy who benefit from their guidance, especially in the realm of this annual event, salute them with greatest appreciation. Together, we join Sam and Boog in welcoming you!

N O R M A N D. A S K I N S

A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Mr. Askins holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Georgia Institute of Technology (1966) and a Master of Architectural History from the University of Virginia (1968.) He also attended a summer session at Parsons School of Design, New York City (1962) and the Attingham Park Summer School, England, where he studied the architecture and decorative arts of Great Britain (1967 & 1993). Following graduate school, Mr. Askins served four years as architect and architectural historian at The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation where he received in-depth training in early building technology and the philosophy of restoration. While at Williamsburg, Mr. Askins was fortunate to be assigned to a yearlong special project to redesign much of the interior of the Executive Office Wing of the White House (Cabinet Room, Vice President’s Office, etc.). Following two years in Atlanta with Heery and Heery Architects, Mr. Askins accepted a position in 1974 with John Milner Associates in West Chester, Pennsylvania, the nation’s largest and foremost preservation/restoration firm. As Director of Restoration, he oversaw a wide variety of preservation projects in the Eastern and Southern regions of the country. In the fall of 1977, Mr. Askins established his own practice in Atlanta, specializing in historic preservation, restoration and residential design. The firm’s scope of services ranges from period residences to vacation cottages, plantations and innumerable additions to existing homes across the U.S. and recently in Ireland and France. In addition to his professional career, Mr. Askins has served on various arts and preservation organizations: Chairman, Friends of the Decorative Arts, High Museum; Board of Governors, Rhodes Hall; Board, Cherokee Garden Library; Board, Southern Architecture Foundation. FIRM PROFILE Norman D. Askins, P.C., a residential architectural firm specializing in classical style, is located in the heart of Buckhead (Atlanta). Mr. Askins is a NCARB Registered Architect with over 40 years of experience. The firm’s work may be found throughout the United States and in Ireland. “Askins uses his client’s family history as a guide, or he may fabricate a new history for a project and then follow the logical sequence of a building’s life as it responds to a century or more of change. For example, the family’s size increases and a new wing is needed; the original mass of the house may have been built in the18th century when Georgian was the high style; however, the addition is created after the Revolution, so the current design is Federal. Such fictive histories allow Askins and the firm’s other designers to make knowledgeable decisions on details to create a coherent design. Askins work is also known for its fine craftsmanship. Like most traditional designers, he employs a set of craftsmen who understand his preferences and work easily with his as a team to produce exquisite details.” —Elizabeth Meredith Dowling, New Classicism: The Rebirth of Traditional Architecture

2 0 2 1 B E N E F I C I A RY To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the Cathedral Antiques Show has selected Atlanta-based nonprofit City of Refuge as the 2021 event beneficiary, marking the organization’s second time as the recipient of proceeds. In 2008, City of Refuge received its first round of funding from the Show, which was used to build the 180 Degree Kitchen: A fully operational cooking, dining, catering and culinary educational facility that prepares and serves hot, healthy meals three times a day, 365 days a year. Over the last 12 years, City of Refuge has served more than two million meals in the space. Additionally, nearly 500 individuals have graduated from the culinary arts vocational training program to pursue employment opportunities in the food and beverage industry. At the young age of 14, Kisha was abused by a family member and got pregnant. She made the brave choice to keep the baby. That meant she had to create a new life for herself, as she was determined to love and protect her child. Kisha went on to develop a strong career at Grady Hospital, working there for almost 10 years while caring for her daughter and grandchildren. Then, a sudden layoff left her unemployed and eventually homeless. With nowhere else to turn, she learned about City of Refuge. She was able to move into Eden Village. For the first time in her life, Kisha felt loved and seen. She enrolled in our culinary arts vocational training program to pursue her passion for cooking. “The programs, services and staff here at City of Refuge truly saved my life,” she says. After completing her goals, graduating from the culinary arts program and moving out of Eden Village, Kisha was hired in our 180 Degree Kitchen. She now helps prepare and serve over 350,000 meals each year. Kisha shares, “My favorite thing about working here is that I know what these ladies are ﬁghting for. I get to meet them where they are by serving them a hot, nutritious meal.” Funds raised during this year’s Cathedral Antiques Show will be used to improve the kitchen’s eﬃciency, allow increased meals to be served and provide the opportunity for more up-and-coming culinary talent to participate in the training program.

City of Refuge operates on a mission to transform lives by helping individuals and families arrest crisis, restore self-respect and break the cycle of poverty. The culinary arts vocational training program is one of the organization’s most successful and longest-running programs. This year, COVID-19 has impacted people in communities around the globe in a major way, especially individuals in low income neighborhoods. The Cathedral Antiques Show fundraising eﬀorts will support City of Refuge’s mission to bring light, hope and transformation to Atlanta’s Westside, while also serving those hit the hardest by the pandemic.

Mississippi-born textile guru Lisa Fine is the founder of Lisa Fine Textiles, which specializes in hand printed linens that are sold in 16 showrooms worldwide. With a southern drawl and a truly adventurous spirit, Fine splits her time between New York and Dallas with frequent trips to Paris and India. Over 20 years ago at a camel festival in Jaisalmer, Fine fell in love with India. The colors, the patterns, the Mughal palaces and gardens were her original inspirations for Lisa Fine Textiles. Since then Fine’s far reaching travels have continued to inﬂuence her collection, where exotic and traditional prints in vibrant and romantic colors feel both worldly and timeless. Alabama-born, Manhattan-based Richard Keith Langham has been a force in the decorating world for 30 years. He graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and studied at the Study Center for the Fine and Decorative Arts in London. After apprenticing with Mark Hampton and 10 years with Irvine & Fleming, Langham founded his own ﬁrm in 1990. His keen eye and ebullient talent serve well in assembling his signature rooms that speak to the past in a fresh way and are brimming with luscious color, pattern and couture detailing. He has worked with the city’s most legendary ladies—Mrs. William F. Buckley, Jr. and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, who once proclaimed him to have “a sorcerer’s eye.” Langham has been named to Elle Decor’s A List and Architectural Digest’s AD 100, and is in high demand as a speaker on decorating. His book About Decorating: The Remarkable Rooms of Richard Keith Langham, was published by Rizzoli in October 2017 and is in its third printing.

Journalist, speaker, tastemaker, traveler, hostess, Southerner, Sunday painter and outdoors lover, Frances Schultz is a lover of houses and gardens, cooking, entertaining, travel and style. She is author and co-author of several books, including the bestselling The Bee Cottage Story—How I Made a Muddle of Things and Decorated My Way Back to Happiness, and most recently California Cooking & Southern Style. Frances is also the West Coast contributing editor for Flower magazine and was a longtime contributor to House Beautiful and Veranda magazines. Frances has written for The Wall Street Journal, Town & Country, Indagare and others. For six years she was an on-air host of the award-winning cable television show Southern Living Presents, with numerous other TV and video appearances to her credit as well. Born and raised in Tarboro, North Carolina, she graduated from St. Mary’s School and from the University of Virginia. Frances is the proud aunt of four, a step-mother and grandmother. She serves on the boards of the Horticultural Society of New York and the Empowers Africa foundation.

RESTORED TO ITS ORIGINAL STUNNING SPLENDOR

A hidden gem set high on a double lot, this historical home was originally designed by Philip Shutze in 1929 and was updated by Norman Askins in 2018 to meet the needs of a modern lifestyle while maintaining its historical accuracy. Askins redesigned the crown moldings, widened the doorways and added a striking circular medallion to the dining room ceiling. The brilliantly designed floating staircase and two original federal fireplaces were restored to their initial splendor. The landscape was artfully designed by Carson McElheney, who created a three-tier boxwood garden and recreated the front landscape to reflect the home’s symmetry. Casey Keesee showcases the ambiance of the home well in his careful selection of bold prints in blues and greens, along with antiques to counterpoint the owners’ modern art and photography collection.

This outstanding 1917 federal style home, nicknamed Arden, was designed by Neel Reid for James L. Dickey, Jr. who sold off much of his 400-acre estate to create what is now known as Buckhead. At 10,000 square feet, it’s Reid’s largest home design and considered by many his finest architectural work. The current owners, along with architect Tim Adams, restored the home to its original grandeur. Modern furniture and artwork are intertwined with magnificent antiques and traditional sofas. Adams redesigned the open-air sunporch into a four-season sunroom with semicircular window panels, and a three-car garage, office and kitchen renovation were also undertaken in a modern yet historically accurate fashion. Armed with a beautiful shell over 100 years old, the homeowners and artisans masterfully restored the home to its original splendor.

M I D C E N T U RY R A N C H : R E I M AG I N E D Nancy Izlar of Nancy Izlar Interiors and Caroline Rolader of Reu Architects put their heads together to reimagine this 1950s mid-century ranch for two empty nesters. Rolader’s keen eye for space and the Izlar’s eye for color transformed a home with closed oﬀ rooms and low doorways into the 21st century. Adding large windows, heightening doorways and replacing walls with passageways accomplished the owner’s goals. Rolader was asked to put an outside living room on the back of the house with a wood-burning ﬁreplace, heaters and plenty of room for family and friends. That room has turned out to be the favorite room in the house. Updating the interiors with a calming color palette and incorporating inherited collections throughout the public spaces made the owners dream of an updated, comfortably sophisticated home a reality.

1969 Janice Perry, then Treasurer of St. Rhoda’s Chapter (now called a “guild”) and mother of our very own Jan Bomar, must meet the Cathedral Building Fund’s pledge of $1,000. Thus begins the modest origin story of the St. Philip Cathedral Antiques Show, now in its glorious 50th year! The Inaugural Show raised a commendable $900, just short of their goal.

The Cathedral’s Dean David Collins ups the ante, challenging St Rhoda’s with a whopping $1,500 fundraising goal. All 10 exhibitors pay $25 in exchange for a booth; tickets for the general public cost $1.50. St Rhoda’s Annual Antiques Show greatly surpasses Dean Collins’ fundraising goal, raising a total of $2,500 for the Cathedral!

As advances in technology and communications lends more exposure to this tastefully appointed event, crosscountry exhibitors and corporate sponsors flock to support the St. Philip Cathedral Antiques Show and its worthy beneficiaries. Not least of these is Antiques magazine naming the Show “One of the 10 Most Beautiful Events in the Nation.” As a result of these combined efforts and the leadership of indispensable chairmen, the Cathedral Antiques Show’s gross income rises to $100,000 annually.

Now Chairman of the Cathedral Antiques Show, Mrs. Ann Burns leads the event as it comes into its own as a landmark event in the world of antiques. One standout anecdote characterizes the 1994 Show: A popular dealer loved toting his patronfriendly Cavalier King Charles Spaniels along with him to the Cathedral every year. Many Show patrons, particularly the youngest, were delighted. Some, however, were not such big fans of the two dogs; understandably yet unfortunately, a few vendors—those selling rugs in particular— made sure no animals would be admitted next year.

Debbie Gray, remembering the mishaps of last year’s Show, is over the moon to have a “closet-type” space in the Cathedral to which she can dedicate her Chairman duties. This is a star-studded event, with 500+ attendees at both featured lectures. This year’s beneﬁciary was The Study Hall at Emmaus House. One late board member of the Study Hall says to Debbie as they share a handshake, “I’ll never doubt what a group of church women can accomplish after seeing how [this Show] came together.” Never, ever underestimate the power of a good-hearted team with a well-deserving purpose!

Jan Bomar, a second-generation Show Chairman (see 1969), spearheads the show this year. The Rt. Rev. C Judson Child, current Bishop of the Diocese of Atlanta and namesake to our gathering space Child Hall, is Honorary Chair. He attends the entirety of the Show, wearing his purple Bishop’s cassock and greeting patrons with tireless enthusiasm. The Rt. Rev. Child boosts the Show’s fundraising outcomes just by being present and radiating his natural, genuine energy. With his help, the Show raises an impressive $242,000 for The Good Samaritan Health Center, which serves the dental and health care needs of low-income patients in the Atlanta Community. Dr Bill Warren’s health center still operates today serving all ages and walks of life.

With Cindra Brown as Chair, the 2005 Cathedral Antique Show is bound to be a windfall event, despite the Cathedral itself undergoing major renovations and expansion efforts. The Show goes on to benefit Georgia Justice Project, a worthy cause that is still fighting the good fight today.

Carrie Grayson agrees to chair this year’s show based on her love of antiques, which Carrie’s mother shared before passing away at a young age. Carrie’s choice for her Honorary Chairs is quite fitting: the unstoppable mother-daughter duo of Sara Chapman and Edyth Shadburn. City of Refuge is chosen as the beneficiary, with all proceeds funding their new 180 Degree Kitchen. The Kitchen, housed on the City of Refuge campus, not only serves meals to the residents, but it offers a three-month job placement training program in the culinary arts. It is ultimately a keystone partnership, as the City’s clients were training to be caterers and wait staff; they actually run this year’s Show in every possible capacity—whether setting up, serving up, or simply making conversation.

This year marks a second term for Nancy Rizor who, along with Boog Candler, is a team that can’t be beat! Jane and Hicks Lanier are the Honorary Chairs, drawing much-needed awareness to the vital work of All About Developmental Disabilities (AADD) as the Show Beneﬁciary. Nancy and Boog introduced “First Place Passion,” the brainchild of this accomplished team of women. They’d heard that the younger participants loved the CAS Tour of Homes but felt the possibility of owning such a home way out of reach. Nancy and Boog, along with their dedicated team of volunteers, created “Drinks & Antiques—A Night for the Young and Savvy” speciﬁcally catering to a younger crowd. Herein lies the true genius of strong, creative women with a noble cause and an enthusiastic team behind them!

Mastering the Mix LIVING ROOM, LORRAINE ENWRIGHT, INTUITIVE DWELLINGS

Concepting the interior canvas of a home can be daunting, but not for Lorraine Enwright of Intuitive Dwellings. As the lead finish designer, she curated the distinctive details, such as hardware and lighting, that defined the Serenbe Designer Showhouse. Describing the aesthetic as “transitional modern,” Enwright started by mixing reclaimed and organic materials with modern lines and finishes. “We wanted to capture the casual, artistic design flow of Serenbe with a sprinkle of modern elegance,” she shared. “Reclaimed and natural materials combined with modern forms and finishes create a visual yin and yang of comfort and sophistication.” This creative push and pull is seen in the living room, where a statement steel mantel and beveled quartzite fireplace serves as a sleek counterpoint to reclaimed beams overhead. Enwright also crafted a vignette of smaller pieces to soften the room’s soaring 14-foot ceilings, invoking scale and intimacy. “Mixing a bold, colorful and modern painting with smaller black-and-white framed compositions provided both the drama and the scale that’s perfect to bring the space together,” she says.

KITCHEN AND DINING ROOM, ELIZABETH FERGUSON DESIGN AND BELL CABINETRY & DESIGN (KITCHEN) The kitchen and dining room have always been the heart of the home, but after an unparalleled year, it’s become our hardworking haven, notes Elizabeth “Buffy” Ferguson of Elizabeth Ferguson Design, who complemented elements like the kitchen’s lime-washed oak and quartzite waterfall countertops with an earthy palette rooted in natural tones and textures and punctuated with pops of black. “We wanted to create an elegant yet comfortable environment—a retreat with personality and warmth where friends come together, families are raised, and the beauty of everyday life unfolds,” she says. In the open-concept living-dining room, pairing elegance with versatility was key, so Ferguson opted for stylish form and function. Hide barstools, brown velvet pillows and leather slipcovered chairs create a sense of elegant ease, while a round table is conducive to conversation. “Combined with a comfortable settee, you can spend hours working or enjoying long dinners with friends. The materials hold up to the reality of everyday life yet have a beautiful elegance.”

SCREENED PORCH, WHITNEY DURHAM, WHITNEY DURHAM INTERIORS At Serenbe, porch living is not just an extension of home, but a way of life, as evidenced by this peaceful perch designed by Whitney Durham of Whitney Durham Interiors. “I wanted the back porch to feel whimsical and cheerful with a graphic punch,” says Durham. She nodded to the interior with a more neutral color palette that complemented the bold exterior while pulling in a darker gray and cream leopard rug, black and white floor lamp shades, and original artwork by Carrie Penley. Within the sea of neutrals, she made a splash with exotic butterfly drapery panels by Schumacher and an eye-popping vintage coral bar cart. When it comes to using the space, whether alfresco entertaining or enjoying some time alone, Durham believes in the power of connecting the two spaces. “You should treat your exterior spaces as an extension of your home,” she says.

PRIMARY BEDROOM AND BATHROOM, PATRICK AND MEGHAN SHARP, MISTER + MRS SHARP Inspiration can strike at any turn. For Patrick and Meghan Sharp of Mister + Mrs Sharp, it was the bespoke menswear along London’s historic Savile Row that inspired their primary suite design. “There’s something magical about the traditional, formal tailor shops of Savile Row, many of which have an edgy modern design bent,” shared Patrick. “Imagine grey woolen suits on busts under a Sputnik light next to an Eames chair. We worked to pull traditional and modern pieces together, along with fabrics that mimicked menswear to have the same feel.” To translate the idea into the space, they started with a beautiful tufted bed covered in a dreamy grey flannel, followed by windowpane and plaid fabrics that cemented the menswear-inspired theme. But the push and pull of masculine and feminine features throughout the spaces was pivotal, so to balance the handsome plaids, they opted for a statement bolster covered in Schumacher Pyne Hollyhock chintz. “It’s like the floral tie of a gentleman’s suiting ensemble—the ultimate finishing touch,” shared Patrick.

BEDROOM AND POWDER ROOM, STEPHANIE ANDREWS, BALANCE DESIGN Multifaceted and mindful were cornerstone concepts for Stephanie Andrews of Balance Design when designing her guest retreat. “The Serenbe lifestyle is rooted in nature, wellness and beauty, so we wanted to incorporate those qualities into the design,” she noted. “Our hanging bed accentuates the high ceilings, yet also allows for a restful break to swing and look out the window.” Intentional details are sprinkled throughout the spirited space, which can easily transition from bedroom, office or place of reprieve in a pinch. An abstract mural draws the eye up the 16-foot ceiling, punctuating the space with a cheerful yet soothing statement. Hues from its playful palette continue into the powder room with its perfectly moody mauve hue. The swinging bed, however, is the prized focal point of the two spaces. “Growing up in Pennsylvania, my parents had a hanging bed on a sleeping porch and my sisters and I would hang out for hours,” says Andrews. This nostalgic, ethereal touch brings the room full circle, making it the perfect destination for answering emails or reading a page-turning book.

FRONT PORCH, ENTRY FOYER AND LAUNDRY, MAGGIE GRIFFIN, MAGGIE GRIFFIN DESIGN First impressions make a lasting impact, so when Maggie Griffin of Maggie Griffin Design conceptualized the collective vision for the front porch, entry foyer and laundry room, she knew she wanted to strike the right chord of welcoming meets memorable. “I wanted the design to be fun and intriguing, yet connected to the earth tones used throughout the space,” she says. For the front porch, Griffin contrasted the distinctive dark exterior with intentional pops of aqua and red, adding a global, collected layer with decorative jars and demilune tables. Moving into the entry and laundry room, she layered neutrals in shades of cream, white and oatmeal, plus a touch of black. While utilitarian in nature, Griffin believes that even the hardest working rooms of the house can—and should—be beautiful. Besides the usual mainstays of the laundry room, she incorporated a chippendale wing chair, desk and cozy bench to sit a spell. “The space is designed to be used beyond folding laundry,” says Griffin. “From working on the computer to reading a book, the room is practical, comfortable and most of all, beautiful.”

BEDROOM AND BATHROOMS, ASHLEY MALONE, BENNETT MALONE INTERIOR DESIGN Taking cues from the natural surroundings of Serenbe, Ashley Malone of Bennett Malone Interior Design curated a warm and inviting bedroom by embracing the palette of the great outdoors. Pattern and art were threads woven throughout the cozy retreat. Distinctive Euro shams covered in a dashing animal-themed design by Schumacher anchors the room’s design and is punctuated by abstract art on both sides of the bed, all encompassing a nature-inspired design. “Earth tones of soft deep greens, warm neutrals and mustards brought the exterior landscape into the interior bedroom and connecting bathroom,” shared Malone. In the bathrooms, she selected a traditional Indian block print wallcovering by Molly Mahon and a punch of personality with a Schumacher shower curtain. “I love the fun pop that wallpaper brings to a space,” she said. “When I saw it, I knew it was perfect.”

BUILDER SOUTH HAVEN BUILDERS ARCHITECTS STEVE DRAY AND CECILIA WINSTON When designing the 2020 Serenbe Designer Showhouse, architects Steve Dray and Cecilia Winston of Serenbe Planning + Design and the team at South Haven Builders crafted and executed their unique vision of a reimagined farmhouse. “The inspiration for this year’s showhouse was a modern version of the single-story Folk Victorian cottage, more specifically the farmhouse style that had been disappearing from the rural South,” shared Winston. The contrast in scale from the modest exterior to the grand, spatial feeling inside was an intentional design element, with the high dormer into the foyer being the first experience of the compressed space versus the expanded space with soaring ceilings. With its intentionally simple exterior, it was painted a distinctive dark hue to distinguish itself from neighboring cottages, while still participating in the community aesthetic. “We strived for restraint on details so it can blend with the Serenbe streetscape,” noted Winston.

Green With Envy

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE, LUCINDA BRAY, FLORALIS GARDEN DESIGN Serenbe is deeply rooted in its natural surroundings, so Lucinda Bray of Floralis Garden Design conceptualized a beautiful yet low-maintenance design with intentional plantings that highlighted both the farm home and community. Evergreen gardenias, hinoki cypress, rosemary and grasses give the landscaping structure, while white-blooming kalimeris, flowering catmint and yellow-flowering marigolds provide consistent color throughout the growing seasons. “We don’t often plant in hues of yellow, but they melded so well with the dark color of the home’s exterior,” shared Bray. “Plus, it provided a bright sunny garden space. Everyone needs a little bit more of that this year!”

BACK SCREENED PORCH FRANCIE HARGROVE, FRANCIE HARGROVE INTERIOR DESIGN Screened porches have evolved from heavy hues into light, luxurious settings for extended relaxation. “I like to create rooms where people want to linger and enjoy conversations, whether it’s over a cocktail or dinner or just reading a great book,” says designer Francie Hargrove. The rich pigment in the abstract painting established her palette of navy blue and chocolate brown. An ebony finish on the waterfall coffee table, accessorized with antlers and an onyx bowl, serves as an anchor against neutral furnishings and drapery. The high ceilings called for a series of panels that added warmth and intimacy to the vast space, yet still let the light filter in. An antique carved wood buffet from France doubles as a bar. With drinks in hand, the residents and guests can choose from various seating, including a swivel chair upholstered in Belgium linen, hair-on-hide stools or barrel-back chairs that marry with the warm tones of the stone fireplace.

FOYER HOLLY LAUGHRIDGE, ACORNS AT OLD EDWARDS INN AND SPA Foyers deserve amazing mirrors, says Holly Laughridge, and she looked no further when she found the trumeau mirror that became the focal point of her entryway. The carved ribbon-tied musical trophy on the wood piece, circa 1820, established the designer’s timeless style. The mirror’s light wood, along with with the Jan Barboglio sconces and an iron table with a green glass top, keep the entryway light and airy. Antiques and heirlooms blend with new pieces, such as an antique wool that was rewoven into a new rug. A vintage European fabric in green and orange and a pair of ferns provide traditional accents while the rug creates a calming point of entry, even for virtual viewers. “All of the colors were very representative of a mountain home,” says Laughridge. “In my mind, everything just kind of blended well together.”

DINING ROOM TORI ALEXANDER, ALEXANDER INTERIORS

Nature’s palette is evident in Tori Alexander’s first showhouse. The designer says she pushed her own tastes to the extreme, such as in choosing the floral chintz in a chartreuse citron for the skirted table. “My design aesthetic is traditional and timeless with a fresh and young perspective,” she says. Mixing color, texture and pattern is her signature, and she did so with the table, wicker chairs, gilded settee, painted wood high chair and artwork. To create visual interest and bring attention to the height of the room, Alexander hung the draperies high, accented corners with columns and wicker urns, and hung a delicate iron chandelier. “My whole objective was to frame the window and really emphasize nature’s beauty,” says the Nashville designer. “That’s, to me, what Cashiers and this area is about, is incorporating the natural elements inside and out.”

As the lead specifications designer for the Showhouse, June Chamberlain worked with the Silver Run Reserve developers, opting for contemporary touches such as iron windows, natural quartzite countertops and white oak floors for the foundation of the clean, modern kitchen. Top of mind was mimicking the outdoor view inside, she says, which cemented her choice of green for the home’s color scheme. “Every season you look outside, you’re going to see some green,” she says. Above the backsplash, she placed the vertical paneling that ran through the main level, including the kitchen alcove. Bistro lighting in antique brass ties in with the cabinetry hardware. Chamberlain envisioned a homeowner who wanted everyday items at arms’ length, which led to the open shelving and a copper-pot rack underneath the vent hood. She imagined kids piling up on the bench, covered in durable hide. “Who doesn’t love to sit in a comfortable spot in the kitchen?”

GREAT ROOM LYNN MONDAY, LYNN MONDAY HOME

The home’s floor-to-ceiling iron windows and stone fireplace steered Lynn Monday toward a monochromatic space that she hoped would please those who appreciate contemporary or cottage design. “I was lucky to have the great room, and the windows were spectacular,” she says. The low-profile furnishings and Kravet draperies in a sand hue allow the eye to gravitate toward the picture-perfect setting. The blues, grays and tans in the stone fireplace led to the textiles selection, including a Colefax and Fowler ivy fabric for the custom channel-back sofas. The waterfall skirts on the sofas speak to the cottage nature of the beamed great room. The designer layered in prints, such as a chevron, stripe and animal print, with tactile pieces such as a sisal rug, urns and accessories with patina. Chariot wheels and French well pulleys on the mantel add an element of masculinity against softer feminine details. Contemporary mirrors flanking the fireplace seem to fade from the soft colors in the couch. “I wanted everything to melt into each other,” she says.

SECOND MASTER AND BATHROOM CATHY RHODES, CATHY RHODES INTERIORS

From the moment Cathy Rhodes saw the iron windows and scenery, she gravitated toward soft neutrals. “I really wanted to make sure that your eyes were drawn outside and you are very aware of where you are,” she says. Browns and creams ground this soothing and serene escape. The quatrefoil motif in the hand-blocked linen drapery fabric signals a fresh approach to mountain interiors. Meanwhile, the contemporary twist of the turned wood spindles in the fourposter bed speaks to the cottage’s transitional nature. Custom features include a leaf embroidery for the shams and bedding in mushroom, and a glaze for the lamps, situated on ribbed bedside tables, that coordinate with the fabrics. At the foot of the bed, an iron bench with a soft and inviting wool demonstrates the designer’s talent for bringing contemporary pieces into a traditional floor plan. In the bathroom, the wallpaper’s leaf pattern and the shape of the mirror pair perfectly with the wood vanity to complete the suite.

They say location is everything in real estate, and designer Lisa Wester was thrilled to find her room next to dear friend Kerry Howard’s bedroom. “The thought of collaborating with him was nothing short of an honor,” she says. As they shared ideas for fabrics and wallpaper, the design naturally evolved to an earthy, tribal nature. The jewel print of the drapery fabric is bold, yet tones down the modern square dimensional print in the taupe wallpaper, both recognizably Thibaut, she says. Wester’s vignette around the stone tub, nestled in a handmade steel cradle, includes a custom abstract by Ginger Oglesby, an Indonesian vest from the late 19th century, Turkish peshtemal handwoven towels and a vintage Greek amphora jar on the stool. Wooden shields, natural bone horn mirrors, black antelope mount and European black horn mounts amp up the bathroom’s masculinity.

“As most people know, I love color,” says Kerry Howard of Tribus Interior Design, who also served as the showhome’s honorary designer. A sunny tobacco color in the drapery fabric sets the tone for the Tribus design trio. The Kravet drapery frames the trees and provides the jumping off point for the tribal prints, which seemed fitting for the home’s mountain modern feel, says Howard. On the fauxbois poster bed, recycled cork upholstery adds a sustainable statement. Tribus Interior Design layered tribal and animal prints with tactile elements, such as a cream coverlet with a waterfall fringe and braided leather piping on the Euro pillows. The bird’s nest shape of the metal chandelier enhances the organic nature of the transitional space with a wow factor. Underneath, the scale of the Kelly Wearstler chairs provides a modern element opposite the credenza with its outstanding overscale brushed brass hardware. Some of the mixed media and acrylic pieces celebrate artists from the Carolinas, and Howard’s antique-hunting prowess accentuates the collected vibe. “When you do a showhouse, you can really show your personality,” Howard says. “I was allowed to be me in this space.”

Golden Touch

MUDROOM/LAUNDRY ROOM ELLY P. COOPER, ELLY POSTON INTERIORS The gorgeous golden tones that set Cashiers aglow, especially in the fall, polished the palette for Elly P. Cooper’s laundry room and multipurpose mudroom. “The western North Carolina mountains are so beautiful and such a special place,” she says. For her showhouse debut, Cooper started with the hand-blocked wallpaper and painted the trim the same color of the cabinetry. “This saffron and green pairing is so fun and fresh and appropriate for the natural surroundings of Cashiers,” she says. The Indian flower wallcovering in the laundry room and Oscar de la Renta fabric for the roman shade in the mudroom give the dual spaces a collected air. Her fresh take on traditional incorporates color and pattern with a mix of antiques. Cooper envisioned the homeowner using the chestnut table, with its crusty patina, for various purposes, whether working on a laptop, as a bar or even a potting space.

Nature’s Bounty

BEDROOM AND BATHROOM ZEB GRANT, ZEB GRANT DESIGN For his first Cashiers showhouse, Zeb Grant found himself at home with the opportunity to bridge the natural world with classic and modern interior design. The use of green—his favorite hue personally—snowballed, he says, from the custom headboard in velvet to the Schumacher Lotus Garden fabric for the duvet and main euros. “It has lots of great color in it, but the background is a different shade of green that coordinated really well with the headboard,” he says. “It made me think of the mountains.” A grouping of antique fish plates, framed duck prints and blue oyster platters connect to the outdoors in the cozy, traditional bedroom. The club wing chair reveals carved mallards at the end of the arms, making it one of the most talked about pieces in the room, he says. Sconces in matte black and a custom driftwood mirror juxtapose modern with the outdoors in the bathroom.

Stuart Pliner’s contemporary leanings turned the powder room into a bold interpretation of mountain greenery. A high-gloss tile, horizontal wallpaper and a camouflage fabric with varying shades of green blend into the tall room. Instead of a cafe curtain, he swagged the camouflage drapes in green, gray and blue around the raised window, acting as parentheses of sorts. A valance made of antiqued brass picks up the color of the custom wood mirror above the marble vanity with a black matte faucet. Oval sconces in a combination of brass and black lessen the angular feel of the room and maximize the narrow vanity wall. “Every angle, no matter where you are in the space, albeit small, you will be able to see something different,” he says.

Earthy Sparkle

BEDROOM AND BATHROOM DOUG WEISS, DOUGLAS WEISS INTERIORS Doug Weiss fashioned a multipurpose room for business and pleasure, complete with an antique desk and glam bar cart. “How many places in the house can you eat and drink? Because that’s what we do when we entertain,” he says. “It’s just a way to celebrate your home.” Weiss also drew inspiration from his recent purchase of a home in Highlands, North Carolina, to design a space with autumnal colors, keeping with his “earthy glam” aesthetic. The tribal print on the sofa serves as the starting point for the room’s masculine design. Other decisions correspond with the sofa, from the sienna shade in the ottoman to the cross between tribal and floral prints in the rug. Weiss sought at least one antique for the room, and found it in the William IV English desk. “I like to ground it with a sense of a past, a sense of age, like it’s survived a lot more than we have,” he says.

Even before the pandemic, the angled space and presence of railings challenged Douglas Hilton. “I think I had 22 different floor plans,” says the designer, who doesn’t often create floor plans. His design concept solidified, thanks to some early mornings, into a contemplative space that was still visually stimulating. He built the room around the Cowtan & Tout fabric in dark red, blue, teal green, orange and black, which frames the window and lends an eastern European bohemian feel, he says. A carved wood bird sculpture and Catie Radney’s mixed media and collage adds to the collected global vibe. Hilton transitioned from the heavier textures of the embroidery, Persian rug and Syrian center table to more refined and whimsical pieces, such as the penwork cabinet, a needlepoint child’s chair and an art grouping. “Don’t limit yourself to what you think a space should be or should have in it; create what you want,” he says. “It’s full of European pieces in the mountains of North Carolina, but I personally think it works beautifully.”

Peaceful Porch

FRONT PORCH ANN SHERRILL, RUSTICKS The front porch is the harbinger of things to come, which in the case of this showhouse, means a mix of traditional and contemporary styles. Ann Sherrill effortlessly decorated the inviting first impression with a combination of mountain staples, rustic artistry and designer fabrics. She took cues from the porches of her store, Rusticks, to add handcrafted hickory rocking chairs and a swing loaded with pillows. Schumacher’s chinoiserie vine fabric enchants in cobalt, a refreshing and popular color choice for mountain living, she says. “I had seen this fabric and thought it would be pretty mixed with the white pillows on the swing,” she says. Behind the swing, a live-edge mirror brightens up the porch and makes it appear more spacious. A woven basket sculpture by Matt Tommey nestled under the lanterns as well as planters with ferns embody casual yet sophisticated Cashiers style.

“In a year of an international pandemic, everyone’s travel routines were halted and changed to stay much closer to home,” says designer Margaret Kirkland. “Camping and road trips became hugely popular in 2020, and we loved the challenge of designing a camping tent into a destination for people to enjoy their creature comforts.” Luxurious fabrics, antiques and accessories, such as a Moroccan tray table, chinoiserie bamboo side tables and a boneinlay telescope evoke an exotic, global flair. Unintimidated by designing a space that opened to the outdoors, Kirkland layered hearty leather and performance fabrics from Thibaut and patterns with saturated color and movement. “We also wanted vibrant blues and reds that would pop against the very neutral canvas walls of the tent,” she says. Red pinstripe fabric on the walls and ceiling cocoon the bed from the lounge area and dining area on the porch while ambient lighting increases the cozy factor.
