CHARACTER BUILDING Designer KAREN FERGUSON of Harrison Design refreshed a dated Sandy Springs kitchen with handsome hues and distinctive metal details Written by

WHAT DO YOU DO when a dated kitchen has good bones? For a Sandy Springs couple, the answer was to resurrect its potential. To accomplish that, they enlisted designer Karen Ferguson of Harrison Design, and first on her list was to strip away unnecessary layers and heavy, outdated finishes—like a dominating stone-clad hood that instantly aged the space—and breathe new life with clean lines and handsome materials. “We made the kitchen feel more spacious with polish and shine without sacrificing its charms,” Ferguson says. The repetition of distinct materials— like unlacquered brass, varying shades of walnut, detailed quartzite and pewter—was key in anchoring the kitchen. The bleached walnut island was topped with luminous 11

Bianco Cristallo quartzite countertops which beautifully reflects light from the antique-inspired mirror-lined pendants that hang from above. The main apron-front sink is also crafted with quartzite, with a custom brass towel bar adding the perfect finishing touch to the original design. Adjoining the countertops is a bespoke walnut butcher block that rests on a custom cabinet crafted with pewter and unlacquered brass, materials that continue throughout the space on the plumbing and cabinetry hardware. Expansive white perimeter cabinets with a subtle silver glaze create a luminous frame for the room, with leaded glass upper cabinets adding a special touch. But the custom hood reigns supreme in the space, bringing elements from the whole room together. “It was tailor-made with a sophisticated mix of metals that are carried throughout the space,” Ferguson says. “The charm is in the details.” 12

RENOVATING A HIGH-RISE KITCHEN is no easy feat: Stubborn floor plans, cumbersome HVAC ducts and tricky drainage logistics aren’t for the faint of heart. Yet the only thing Matthew Quinn of Design Galleria Kitchen & Bath Studio could see was potential. “The young homeowners wanted a more open flow between the kitchen and comfortable living room, all within a more traditional aesthetic,” Quinn says about the Park Avenue condominium. For that to be achieved, the kitchen needed to be reconfigured, with the sink moving to the kitchen island—a complex undertaking for a high-rise with neighbors that are literally underfoot. But the new central island was eventually realized, serving as the anchor for the room, its alder wood handsomely aligning with the paneled hood and new opening to the hallway. “The goal was to create a kitchen and keeping room that were the center of the home for cooking, daily dining and relaxing,” interior designer Vaughn Connerty says. “The old floor plan was changed to 17

create a symmetrical space aligning the range, island and TV area. The walls were paneled throughout to create a consistent space that blends both rooms.” The eye-catching cabinets were painted Hale Navy by Benjamin Moore, a striking hue that Connerty says saturates the room with color and complements the alder wood and warm marble countertops. Because the combined kitchen-living spaces features only cabinetry and a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows, Quinn shares that the stainless steel “towers” of the refrigerator and oven add visual relief to the dominant wood cabinets. While the kitchen cabinets appear to extend to the ceiling, the painted panels cleverly disguise rerouted HVAC ducts. Special details are sprinkled through the space, like sleek metal mesh inserts in the tall pantry cabinets, striking brass hardware and plush textiles. “Brass light fixtures, plumbing and hardware added more glamour while textured fabrics on the furniture and island banquette add warmth and comfort to this livable space, 250 feet up in the air,” Quinn says. But more important than the materials that fill the room is the emotion that it evokes. “It’s a rich, cozy space that’s highly organized and functional,” Connerty says. “I love that our clients say it’s their favorite room in their home.” 18

AS THE CHILDREN OF a Buckhead family grew into college-age adults, the homeowners realized their 1929 family home needed to reflect this new chapter of life, especially the kitchen. Cue Laurie Lehrich of Cardea Home and architect D. Stanley Dixon, who served a fresh kitchen renovation that transitions from pancakes to parties with ease. “This was a massive renovation well beyond the kitchen, and Stan Dixon and his team really shined by transforming the small, closed-off area into a larger, lighter room with more open space,” Lehrich says. To adjust to their empty nest, the homeowners wanted to create a kitchen arrangement that would accommodate the grown members of their family, from festive gatherings to leisure time for just the couple. The island, for example, was designed with opposite bar seating in addition to side to side, so that husband and wife can face each other while sharing casual meals. The aesthetic features strong traditional elements thanks to flush inset cabinetry 22

and an iconic Lacanche range in matte black with a mixed metal trim, complementing the eye-catching custom hood. While the design leans toward classic characteristics, contemporary elements also shine through, like sleek transitional doors and, most notably, dramatic glossy coats of Sherwin-Williams Black Fox paint on the cabinets. The honed Italian marble countertop, backsplash and sculptural waterfall island juxtapose the distinctive cabinet color and finish. Lehrich notes that the homeowners leaned in to the bold color choice. “One would think it would absorb light and make the room dark, but in a high-gloss mirrored finish, it did just the opposite. Light dances all over the room,” she says. “It’s well-balanced and thoughtful, but not without surprises and details that keep it interesting.” 24

WHILE IT FEELS LIKE kitchens and dining rooms resemble each other more often than not, especially in the age of constant pinning, posting and engaging, Melanie Millner of The Design Atelier created a distinctive, one-of-a-kind space that still harkens back to classic design principles. “The homeowners wanted a kitchen that felt unique to the Atlanta market,” Millner shares about her clients’ Buckhead renovation. To make their custom dream a reality, a new open floor plan was imperative so the family could gather and entertain with ease. Handsome walnut statements were incorporated throughout the kitchen, most notably on the custom island and hood, both handcrafted by Marcel Olariu of Kingdom Woodworks. Warm gray paint on the walls and perimeter cabinets give the room a fresh aesthetic without feeling too modern, while Cristallo quartzite countertops and an eye-catching, sculptural backsplash effortlessly frame the kitchen. Easing the transition from the open kitchen to the elegant dining room is an antique mirror-clad cabinet, which was 29

SEAMLESSLY CONNECTING a historic structure with new construction is a delicate undertaking. The secret recipe is making it indecipherable where the original home ends and the addition begins, a feat masterfully achieved by architect Frank Neely and designer Jessica Bradley in this Brookwood Hills renovation. The adjoining kitchen and dining room is the home’s main artery, as well as the connective tissue between the old house and new construction. Neely said it was important to connect the addition visually, so white cabinets, trim work and molding were “packaged” together, functioning as a whole rather than as individual parts so it appears to be original to the house. The thoughtful, highly functional layout allows the homeowner to cook and gather with ease—especially with three young children underfoot—while still feeling like a distinctive living space and not too, as Bradley says, “kitcheny.” “It doesn’t feel like a kitchen—it feels like a large, warm and welcoming space that can accommodate a lot of people and yet be very functional at the same time,” Bradley explains. 34

The primarily creamy room is anchored with a warm walnut island, which feels more like a large dining table. Bradley selected a lighter breakfast room table and chairs so the island would feel like the central gathering spot. The marble perimeter countertop boasts blue-green details that complement the tiled backsplash, as well as the striking pantry painted Farrow & Ball Oval Room Blue, which contrasts with the creamy room beautifully. “This anchor of color that Jessica selected really helps to ground the white kitchen,” Neely shares. In the end, Neely notes that the kitchen addition is the hardest working room of the house, and takes on the responsibility with effortless grace. “It handles the circulation of the home, accommodates large numbers of people without getting in the way of the cook and is a joy to be around, as it’s easy on the eyes,” Neely notes. “It is genuinely a nice space to spend time in.” 36

While local and visiting designers at the International Gift & Home Furnishings Market, January 14–21, might not immediately notice improvements, they are in progress as part of a multistage plan to transform AmericasMart’s 7.2 million-square-foot campus. “Our showrooms are always showing cutting-edge trends, and it’s important for the facility they are showcased in to feel fresh [and] relevant,” explains Scott Eckman, International Market Center’s executive vice president, president of furniture and home decor leasing. Already, designers can enjoy expanded resources, including a workspace with a concierge service and resource library. Most of the visible changes will take shape later this year, as architect Micah Hall of ASD | SKY leads the striking renovation of the Building 1 lobby, which will include a full-service eatery. “The dramatic changes to our lobby are going to generate great energy and excitement for our market center and serve as the gateway to our reimagined designer shopping experience,” Eckman says.

Naomi Von Habersham I WAS INTRODUCED to my dream kitchen about 20 years ago, courtesy of the 1936 black-and-white film, My Man Godfrey. The setting of the William Powell-helmed movie was a Park Avenue apartment, decorated in the high-style, Regency-inspired look that was so popular on movie sets at the time. While most rooms in the apartment were dripping in swirling plaster flourishes and theatricality, the apartment’s kitchen was designed in a different vein: sleekly modern and utilitarian. The walls were lined floor to ceiling in recessed cabinetry, presumably trimmed in chrome, while patterned linoleum seems to have covered the floor. In the middle of the room, there was a sizable island on which Godfrey, the butler, polished silver and mixed cocktails. To most moviegoers at the time, the kitchen would have been on the cutting edge, but the remarkable thing is, it still seems fresh today. The room was spacious, the layout seemingly practical and the finishes were gleaming and clean. Who wouldn’t love to call this kitchen their own? Well, the answer is, not everyone. For every person who prefers a kitchen to be streamlined, there is someone else who craves clutter. Some people wouldn’t dream of introducing patterned tile to their kitchens, while others can’t imagine a kitchen without it. It’s funny how we tend to harbor such strong notions about how a kitchen should look. Design legend Van Day Truex once admonished Bunny Williams for considering the color red for the kitchen in her Connecticut home, explaining that a kitchen should be white. OK, so I’m with Truex. But then consider Julia Child’s colorful kitchen, now reassembled at the Smithsonian. ASK CHEF TERRY KOVAL how he creates a menu that feels equal parts fresh and delicious, and he’ll point to the ingredients. “It’s about the simplicity of good food,” he says. A longtime champion for utilizing local, farm-fresh ingredients sourced from small farmers, Koval—former executive chef at Wrecking Bar Brewpub—continued these initiatives with the opening of two new concepts: restaurant The Deer and The Dove and adjoining coffee and wine bar B-Side. In partnership with Luke Wilkinson of Local Architects and Brian Buckner, the design’s deep hues—both indoors and on the restaurant’s brick exterior—convey a modern and minimal feel, while custom deer artwork by Atlanta artist DOZFY sets the tone in the dining room, as do hunting trophies from Koval’s father. “We wanted to create a space that is inviting and comfortable with really great food and drinks; somewhere we would want to go if we were going out to eat,” Koval says. The same can be said for the menus. Expect a rotating menu of rustic, intentionally crafted dishes—from fresh vegetable plates to wood-smoked meats such as rabbit, duck and venison. An extension of The Deer and The Dove, B-Side offers a selection of handmade wood-fired bagels, along with coffee and pastries crafted by pastry chef Miranda Vick. At night, enjoy predinner appetizers with a menu of wine, cocktails and small plates from The Deer and Dove. “It’s a come-as-you-are restaurant,” says Koval. “No pretense, just good food and good people.”

WHEN BUILDING A DREAM HOME, it’s easy to get caught up in the aesthetics. Will it be contemporary or more classic? Will it feature pops of color or playful patterns? But for a young couple with two children, their new lakeside home in Columbus, Georgia, was instead built more on feeling. “The home really does smile at you,” says Montgomery-based interior designer Ashley Gilbreath, when describing its welcoming nature. “It’s a hospitable, happy place and that’s really a reflection of the clients.” The family’s easy-going spirit, along with the land’s verdant setting, was all the inspiration Atlanta architect Brandon Ingram needed to craft a rambling-style home that makes quite the first impression. A meandering driveway through the woods reveals a classic lap-sided dwelling that boasts touches of local fieldstone and a playful wooden roofline. “It has a kick back-and-relax feel to it, but still is very sophisticated. Given they’re a young family, it was important that the home didn’t take itself too seriously so we avoided any notion of overt formality,” explains Ingram. 59

The interiors echo Ingram’s approach. “While much of the home is rooted in classic design, it’s equally casual and approachable,” says Gilbreath. She skillfully achieved this balance by avoiding anything deemed “too fussy” and instead outfitted the light-filled spaces with tailored lines and natural textiles in a range of organic tones so as not to distract from the scenic lake views. Whimsical details were also part of the design equation, such as the powder room’s vintage wooden trough sink or an unexpected modern leather light fixture in the library. Most impactful of all, though, is a custom 11-foot raffia upholstered screen that not only serves to delineate the living and dining spaces, but further enhances the home’s unique design sensibilities. Since the young homeowners were trading in their hodge-podge furnishings (including pieces from college) from their first home for more refined pieces in line with this new season of life, Gilbreath was keen to help them understand the value of investing in antiques. “I don’t think you can grow up in the South and not have some collection of antiques, that’s just part of it, but they began to recognize the value in an old piece rather than buying something new,” she says.

Historical Nod In the kitchen, cabinetry by Kingdom Woodworks was designed to resemble furniture as a nod to historic homes. The pendants are Visual Comfort.
“Not only do antiques, with their little quirks and imperfections, add to the depth of a space, but they really stand up to life’s ‘uh-oh’ moments,” Gilbreath goes on to explain when discussing the home’s antique European tables in the breakfast and dining rooms. “The clients envisioned their home as a place where all the other kids and families came to hang out, so snacking and coloring and whatever else on these tables is very hassle-free because you can’t harm them. They’ve already stood the test of time.” The backdrop for all of these design details was just as thoughtfully devised by Ingram, with many of the interior walls featuring butted wood boards. “There’s an inherent feeling that wood gives to a home. It’s the echo and the way a door shuts; there’s something kind of ephemeral about that,” he explains. And to dress up spaces intended for entertaining, Ingram incorporated more complex millwork. “In some places, we let the cornices get fancy but the wood still reels it in a bit. And there’s other spots where we dialed back the millwork, essentially playing this game of high and low throughout to create visual interest, which effectively creates a story to the home.” And undoubtedly, the narrative of this home is one of warmth and hospitality. “It’s not too showy or too bold,” says Gilbreath. “Just like the clients, it’s ready to greet you with open arms.” See Resources, Back of Book. 65

THE SERENITY OF A BATHROOM can spark the best ideas, even renovation projects. Designer Shawn Amtower won the trust of her Vinings clients with a luxurious master bath remodel, a past Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Bath of the Year award winner. Once complete, the couple decided, “We’ve got to keep it going,” she says. Just as in the bathroom, Amtower set out to clear away heavy elements, such as molding, stacked-stone fireplaces and heart pine floors, that lent to the formerly traditional, darker interiors. She replaced small windows in the kitchen, dining, family and living rooms with new iron versions by Forge Fine Steel painted the same white as the walls and trim, instead of the traditional black. She leveraged her clients’ appreciation for the bathroom’s creamy whites, soft taupes and pale grays with the palette reset. “I stripped everything down and just like to have it very peaceful, to where everything looks soft and beautiful,” says Amtower, founder of Amtower Interior + Design. 77

Luxe Landing Amtower transformed the family room, removing a massive, stacked-stone fireplace as well as heavy moldings from the archways. Custom waterfall tables with white concrete tops from Grey and a glassand-brass chandelier from Williams Sonoma Home add lightness, as do sofas by Dmitriy & Co. and pillow fabrics through R Hughes.
The resulting monochromatic design, accented with charcoals, allows the landscape behind the steel windows to provide natural color. Modern choices and custom furnishings are balanced with rich fabrics, pillows and draperies, including lush alpaca linen on recessed tracks. “It was miles and miles of this fabric,” she says. Satin linen fabric draperies and Italian porcelain tile dressed up the expanded master retreat, which features a Victoria + Albert tub and steam shower. There she turned a hallway into a makeup vanity area, and looked for the same design opportunities elsewhere in the home. Removing the columns between the kitchen and family room made the space feel huge, says Amtower, who worked with Mike Hammersmith General Contracting. Once they reclaimed that space, Amtower turned her attention to one area that she could embellish without distracting from the polo fields outside the windows. She built out the ceilings with trim in a clean, stair-stacked design that gives the kitchen, breakfast area and family room their own identity and a soft, subdued feel when lit. Near the kitchen, she downsized a bathroom into a powder room to carve out a pantry in the breakfast area. The family room layout, with custom coffee tables at each sofa, keeps the space open so that the sleek white fireplace, which was once stacked stone and now has a plaster surround, takes center stage. “The fire to me is the coolest feature in any room, so I’m all about framing the fire,” she says. NO NEW HOME BUILD comes without obstacles, and for a blended family of seven, they had their fair share from the beginning. First it was the unforeseen circumstances that required architect Brad Wright and builder Will Hines of Keeoco Development to expedite the 10,000-square-foot home’s construction timeline. Then it was Greenville, South Carolina, designer Michele Johnson’s challenge of personalizing the massive manse so its design honored the architecture, but still felt true to the family—all while ensuring the home would be move-in ready within one year’s time. While some may shy away from such commitment, the dynamic design trio said “no problem.” Though the architecture leans French traditional with towering vaulted ceilings, mahogany doors and steel elements throughout, Johnson was eager to keep the interiors approachable. In the main gathering areas—the living room, family room and kitchen—warm tones and textures take center stage through an inviting palette of browns, grays and reds. “The design easily could’ve gone very traditional and heavy, but I really didn’t want that,” says Johnson. “We wanted it to feel elegant, but lived in. Something worthy of a cocktail party or a kids’ Halloween party.”

For example, step inside the front door and the living room beckons with rich cranberry mohair sofas complemented by pink linen wing chairs boasting a pink velvet cushion. For an added layer, bleached pine chests with a pinkish hue accentuate the tone-on-tone theme while wood beams give the space an aged appeal. “I like for you to be able to glaze over a room and see a peaceful overall look, but when you sit and study it, you notice the subtle play in texture and color tones,” says Johnson. That’s not to say that bright colors and whimsical patterns were off limits. In fact, they were encouraged. Upstairs, each child lent a hand in designing their personal spaces. Colorful prints overflow from room to room in dragon, zebra and abstract wallpaper, while pink canopy beds in the daughters’ sleeping corridors serve as space for daydreaming and princess play. A true team effort to build a polished home under strenuous circumstances, the project was complex, but the goal was simple: a stylish, sophisticated place fit for adults and children alike. “All of the rooms lend special purpose to each person in the house,” says Johnson. “They really made this a family moment.” See Resources, Back of Book.

AS A FAMILY EVOLVES, its needs change as well, and that was the case for a Buckhead couple with three growing children and a rambunctious black Lab puppy. Ideal when they first moved in many years ago, their abode had begun to feel dated, and its open floor plan allowed noise to travel throughout the interior. “They were looking to add more character and take it to the next level,” says interior designer Yvonne McFadden. Tackling two problems in one fell swoop, McFadden added a new glass and steel wall that essentially divides the front and back of the house without interfering with the natural light. Accented by the dark mullions on the perimeter windows, it strikes a decidedly modern note. Custom millwork and crown moldings elevate the interior.

For the color palette, McFadden took inspiration from her client’s extensive art collection. In the formal living room, a small but impactful piece of art inspired the coralcolored herringbone fabric on the chaise lounge, which faces a pair of linen-covered wing chairs around a walnut cocktail table. “I love the layering of texture and lines,” McFadden says. And the chartreuse stools at the charcoal kitchen island likewise reference the artwork. While gutting the well-appointed space was not necessary, the designer repainted the base cabinetry in a more contemporary gray-white color and nixed the uppers in favor of custom iron shelving against a full-wall Calacatta gold subway tile backsplash. Adding another layer, decorative wooden beams adorn the ceiling and frame the walls around the corner breakfast nook. “We didn’t want it to look too new,” McFadden says. Beams also surround a series of doors and windows in the adjacent great room, 110

which McFadden filled with a mix of tailored upholstered furnishings accented with antiques. For example, a pair of French case goods flanks the handsome marble fireplace mantel. “The juxtaposition of something clean and contemporary with something very old tells a beautiful story,” McFadden says. In this case, it’s the tale of a family ready for their next chapter in life. When their daughters entertain their friends, the grateful parents can simply close the doors, instantly muffling any unwanted noise. For the husband’s recent 50th birthday, however, they opened them all, allowing their guests to circulate between the main living areas and the poolside patio, which McFadden outfitted with a new louvered roofing system. “They love it,” McFadden says. “When everything comes together, it all looks so lovely.” See Resources, Back of Book.

SUMPTUOUS SEATING
AS WE ENTER the third decade of the 21st century—the one that rendered rotary dial phones obsolete and teenaged tutors of smart phones mandatory—it’s both reassuring and astounding that design hasn’t changed as exponentially as technology. Twenty years ago we nervously considered the technological impacts of the new millennium, so we hoped for the best but prepared for the worst. We anticipated that neither our computers nor cell phones would work and we waited with dread as midnight struck. Ultimately, it was another celebratory New Year’s Eve that left our phones and computers reflecting the proper date and time on January 1st. Today those devices now connect us in ways we never imagined. We know what our neighbors ate for dinner while on vacation in the Maldives, and we know the fabric a designer will use on a project before the bolt arrives at the drapery manufacturer. For better or worse, we’ve blurred the lines of privacy and suspense for the sake of publicity on social media. 116
Even through the abundant visibility of technology, design has not changed significantly. For example: The anchor of the living room—the sofa—has not evolved much through recent centuries. It still commands the room with an invitation to “come sit.” The chesterfield, the rolled arm, the camelback and the Knole sofas were designed in England between the 18th and early 20th centuries, and they continue to be favored due to classic proportions and beautiful lines. Twentieth-century America gave us the sleek tuxedo and streamlined mid-century modern sofas, while the Lawson and sectional sofas remain the most popular types in the 21st century. That bastion of design, the sofa remains blessedly common— and I mean that in the most ardent way. I’m thrilled to know that I can recline on my sofa with this magazine in hand, and when I get up, I will have rested on a beautiful piece of furniture that remains relevant and essential, regardless of how “smart” the rest of the world becomes.
