FEARLESS INNOVATION ATLANTA’S FOOD STORY

“Food (and cooking food together) is the most sincere form of giving and sharing one can do. Cooking is a temporary art that requires dedication and attention at the stove. That dedication is not only a sacrifice of the person cooking. It opens the heart of the person receiving these delicious gifts.” Chef Todd Richards

BUY YOUR ATLANTA COOKBOOK Atlanta’s food story has been told by many people over the years but none with the focus and passion that chef Taria Camerino has brought to this project. This is not a typical cookbook. Yes, it has 49 recipes covering a wide spectrum of cuisines, including cocktails, but this book will be more at home on your coffee table than in your kitchen with more than 280 pages filled with beautiful photography celebrating Atlanta’s food scene.

Zoo Atlanta’s newest Sumatran orangutan, Nangka

We’ve got many new things on tap in 2024, so come back and see us soon. Here’s what’s coming up. BY CAROL CARTER

ARTS

Atlanta is home to the Grammy Awardwinning Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) and the Tony Award-winning Alliance Theatre, with many more arts and culture venues offering the very best in exhibitions and performances. Here are some highlights:

• ASO music director Nathalie Stutzmann and Grammy Award-winning soprano Renee Fleming will perform music from Richard Strauss at Atlanta Symphony Hall April 11-13, 2024.

• On Feb. 10, 2024, two-time Oscar

and two-time Grammy winner Peabo Bryson will present “A Whole New World” at the Rialto Center for the Arts.

• The Alliance Theatre will stage “The Preacher’s Wife,” May 11-June 9. • The Fox Theatre, home to Broadway in Atlanta, will start the year with “Hamilton,” Jan. 30-Feb. 25, 2024, followed by “Beetlejuice,” March 19-24, 2024; “Shrek,” April 6 and 7,

38 DISCOVERATLANTA.COM

2024; ”Six,” April 16-21, 2024; “To Kill a Mockingbird,” May 7-12, 2024; “Les Miserables,” June 4-9, 2024, and “Funny Girl,” July 30-Aug. 4, 2024. High Museum of Art, the jewel in Atlanta’s visual arts scene, will present, “Hear Me Now: The Old Potters of Edgefield, South Carolina.” Feb. 16-May 12, 2024.

SPORTS

Atlanta is widely considered the capital of college football – with good reason. In 2024, the Aug. 31 Aflac Kickoff Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium will pit the University of Georgia Bulldogs against the Clemson University Tigers. On the heels of that, the Cricket Celebration Bowl, a showdown between the Southwestern Athletic Conference and the MidEastern Athletic Conference, will occur at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Dec. 16, 2024. As sure as the fourth down follows the third, the traditional Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, featuring winning teams from the 2024 season, will occur at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on New Year’s Day 2025.

• Professional golf’s TOUR

Championship tees off Aug. 29 and plays through Sept. 2, 2024, at East Lake Golf Club.

SHOPPING

Atlanta welcomes three new retailers to Lenox Square in 2024: fashion shops The Webster, Moncler and Maje. Also at

Lenox, the Gucci store will be expanded. Across the street at Phipps Plaza, the new year will bring high-end fashion shops Christian Louboutin, Celine and Hermes.

FESTIVALS

There’s always a festival going on and one of the nation’s most popular festivals, Dragon Con, returns Aug. 29 through Sept. 2, 2024. The Atlanta Food & Wine Festival returns Sept. 12–14, 2024.

DINING

Return in 2024 and dine at one of the Michelin Guide Atlanta restaurants, just announced in October.

BRING ON THE BABIES!

Zoo Atlanta welcomed two youngsters in 2023. Both should be out and about in 2024. Western Lowland gorilla Willie B. III was born in April to mom, Shalia. He is the first offspring of Willie B. Jr and a grandson of the legendary late Willie B. Nangka, a male Sumatran orangutan, was born in May and came to Zoo Atlanta from the Sacramento Zoo to be cared for by adoptive mom Madu after his birth mother did not provide appropriate care.
