Atlanta lives and breathes soccer. What began as an underground scene blossomed into record crowds for Atlanta United FC games. Between sold-out matches at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and the city hosting FIFA World Cup 2026™, Atlanta isn’t just staging the sport’s biggest moments – it’s shaping soccer’s future.
BY DEMETRIUS BELL
Atlanta United FC debuted in 2017 and quickly transformed Major League Soccer (MLS). After early sellouts at Bobby Dodd Stadium, the club moved to Mercedes-Benz Stadium, won the MLS Cup 2018, plus the 2019 U.S. Open Cup and Campeones Cup, while leading MLS in attendance every season with electric and engaged supporter groups.
Atlanta soccer fans fervently support teams from abroad. Visit Brewhouse Cafe, named “America’s best soccer bar” by “Men in Blazers,” or other bars such as Fadó Irish Pub and Hudson Grille on a Saturday morning match day or on Boxing Day. You’ll find the pubs full of excited fans watching the games. Nearly every Premier League club and soccer countries like Spain, Germany, Italy and France have officially recognized fan clubs in Atlanta.
Fútbol
International matches have long drawn massive crowds to Atlanta.
In 2022, Club América and Chivas de Guadalajara played a “friendly” edition of the heated Súper Clásico rivalry in front of a passionate audience. The Mexican National Team has routinely filled stadiums in Atlanta since 2009.
In March 2014, “El Tri” faced Nigeria in a match that drew more than 68,000 fans. A month later, Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank announced that his bid for an MLS expansion team had been accepted. Local fans had proven they were ready to support a team that would put Atlanta on the map as a soccer city.
Atlanta has recently been awarded a National Women’s Soccer League expansion franchise, debuting in 2028 as the league’s 17th team. The team will play at Mercedes-Benz Stadium under Blank’s AMB Sports and Entertainment.
Sons of Pitches FC connects players through pickup games and leagues that reflect Atlanta’s diversity. Meanwhile, Soccer in the Streets partners with Atlanta United FC and MARTA to build StationSoccer at train stations, reducing transportation barriers and expanding grassroots access for youth and adults alike.
In the summer of 2025, Atlanta hosted international powerhouse clubs Chelsea, Manchester City and Inter Miami during the FIFA Club World Cup. That same year, the Premier League Summer Series returned to Atlanta, featuring matchups between AFC Bournemouth and West Ham United, and Manchester United and Everton.
And now, the Men’s FIFA World Cup 2026™ is being played in Atlanta, with eight matches from June 11 to July 19, including a semifinal on July 15.
The U.S. Soccer Federation also chose metro Atlanta for its first national training center in nearby Fayetteville. The $228 million, 200-acre Arthur M. Blank U.S. Soccer National Training Center will serve all 27 U.S. national teams, further cementing Atlanta’s role in the future of the sport.

World-class Atlanta Stadium is ready to welcome players and fans from all over the world. With eight matches coming to Atlanta, the City in the Forest is gearing up to show the globe how we do things on a different level.

If you’ve ever had a Coke and a smile, then you may know that Atlanta is the headquarters of The Coca-Cola Co. You may also know that the firstever Coca-Cola was served at Jacobs Pharmacy in Atlanta. This explains why developers, breathing new life into what is becoming a walkable South Downtown, were thrilled when a Jacobs Pharmacy bottle, circa 1910-1920, was found during construction.
South Downtown, once home to Terminal Station and Union Station, and to the hotels where train passengers stayed, began to decline with the rise of automobile transportation and the construction of a viaduct that made it easier for travelers to reach hotels farther north.
Work is underway to restore 120year-old buildings in the area, and even though it is a work in progress, South Downtown has already become a community.
Newly opened restaurants in South Downtown include Tyde Tate Kitchen (Thai), El Tesoro (Mexican), Kitchen Counter (breakfast and lunch), Brewhouse Cafe (pints and plates), Spiller Park Coffee (caffeine), Bottlerocket Sushi (Japanese-American fusion), Broad Street BBQ (wings, sandwiches) and Delilah’s Everyday Soul (comfort food).
Smorgasburg Atlanta has returned for another season, bringing more than 40 vendors to the area every Saturday through November. Hungry Atlantans flock to South Downtown to try Astros Corn Dogs, Argentina Eats, Saffron Wok and so many more.
Businesses open in South Downtown include Cat Eye Creative gallery, Village Books, vinyl records store Crates, coworking space Terminus Hub and more. Throughout the neighborhood, the goal is to keep South Downtown as car-lite or car-free as possible.
Centennial Yards is a 50-acre development in downtown Atlanta that
includes 2,000 apartments, 900,000 square feet of retail and 1.2 million square feet of office space.
At Centennial Yards, enjoy Wild Leap Brewery and Zephyr Southern Brasserie. Take in the views of The Mitchell and The Lofts at Centennial Yards, which were fully leased in 45 days, underscoring the hype around Downtown.
Hotel Phoenix is newly open in the middle of the action, along with The Irish Exit, a modern Irish bar concept from New York’s award-winning The Dead Rabbit Group; Cosm Atlanta, an 80,000-squarefoot sports and entertainment experience; Khoa Thai Isan, a Thai tapas concept; and Shake Shack.
Soon visitors will be able to enjoy iconic Atlanta soul food at Busy Bee Café, get your groove on at Live Nation’s new concert venue and fuel up at Chops Lobster Bar.
Welcome to Atlanta, a city that embraces its past and never stops changing and growing.

1
A Stadium that Knows Soccer: Mercedes-Benz Stadium was built as a soccer-specific stadium and routinely hosts 20 matches per year. It is one of the only FIFA World Cup™ venues in the United States that is soccer-specific.
2 It Can Switch Between Soccer and Football with Ease: Thanks to a modular design, the stadium can change from a soccer field to a football field in a matter of hours by adjusting seating, signage and even the turf.
3 The World’s Largest Halo Screen: The stadium features a 63,000-square-foot, 360-degree HD video screen, the largest of its kind, that surrounds the roof like a halo.
4 It Was One of the Most Expensive Stadiums Ever Built: The stadium’s total cost exceeded $1.6 billion, placing it among the most expensive stadiums on the planet.
5 Smart Stadium Technology: With more than 1,800 wireless access points and state-of-the-art mobile connectivity, the stadium is one of the most technologically advanced in the country. The network can handle more than 75,000 connected devices simultaneously.
6 Retractable roof inspired by Roman architecture: The stadium’s roof is inspired by the oculus of the Pantheon in Rome. It consists of eight triangular panels that open and close in a circular shape, like a camera.
Mercedes-Benz Stadium isn’t just any stadium – it’s a mix of goals, excitement and the atmosphere of champions. Here are 14 reasons why Mercedes-Benz Stadium is an experience in itself.
BY DANIELA CINTRON
7 The Window to the City: A massive floor-to-ceiling glass wall overlooks downtown Atlanta, offering visitors a breathtaking view of the skyline while watching a game or concert.
8 Collection of Art with Atlanta Roots: The stadium houses more than 180 works of art, including works by local and national Black artists and even a 23-meter-tall falcon sculpture on the façade, the largest bird sculpture in the world.
9 A Giant Falcon Made of Recycled Steel: The famous 23-meter falcon sculpture in front of the stadium was constructed from recycled steel and designed by Hungarian artist Gábor Miklós Szőke. The bird holds a soccer ball, paying homage to Atlanta’s passion for the sport.
10 LEED Platinum Certified: It is the first professional sports stadium in the United States to achieve LEED Platinum certification. It has 4,000 solar panels, a rainwater harvesting system and electric vehicle charging stations.
11 Recycles Rainwater: The rainwater harvesting system not only prevents flooding, but collects up to 2 million gallons per year, which is then used to irrigate gardens and supply the stadium’s restrooms.
12
Concessions at Reasonable Fan Prices: Mercedes-Benz Stadium has reasonably priced
food concessions for the fan, offering items such as $2 hot dogs and $5 beer.
13 It Has Its Own Local Culinary Program: The stadium collaborates with local chefs and restaurants through the “Best of Atlanta” program, offering authentic Atlanta food inside the stadium, from BBQ to international cuisine.
14
Host of Major World Events: Mercedes-Benz Stadium has hosted Super Bowl LIII, the College Football Playoff National Championship, Copa América and is one of the venues for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup and the FIFA World Cup 2026™, which places the stadium on a world sporting stage.
Consider not bringing a bag into the stadium. If you do bring a bag, it must meet this criteria:
plastic bags
Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC must not exceed 12" x 6" x 12” or 30.5 x 15.25 x 30.5 cm. No buckles, hardware or décor can conceal any part of the bag.
One-gallon clear plastic freezer bag
12" wide or 12" tall 6" deep or less.
Small, non-clear bags cannot exceed 4.5" x 6.5" in size.

Atlanta’s soccer community thrives because of its supporter groups. Six in total and each bringing their own style and fan experience, these groups fuel match day by leading chants, curating an unforgettable tailgate experience and giving back to the community.
BY TAYLOR BOSER
One of the six official Atlanta United supporters groups is All Stripes. Its mission is to create a safe space in the soccer supporters community for LGBTQ+ individuals. The name All Stripes is a reference to the team’s nickname – The Five Stripes – and the rainbow stripes on the Pride flag.
During FIFA World Cup 2026™, All Stripes is partnering with Pride House Atlanta, an organization that provides meet-up opportunities for soccer fans. All Stripes, alongside Pride House Atlanta, will be present for watch parties in Decatur at Decatur Watch Fest, The Works on Atlanta’s Upper Westside and Lore, an LGBTQIA+ bar and venue in Old Fourth Ward on the Eastside. The full details on dates, locations and times will be available at PrideHouseUnited2026.com/ atlanta.
Throughout the season, All Stripes hosts tailgates for Atlanta United home matches in Lot 17 across from Gate 4 of MercedesBenz Stadium and watch parties for away matches at Pour Taproom in Midtown. It also is present at pride festivals throughout the metro Atlanta area from June through October culminating at the Atlanta Pride Parade festival in the fall.
Josh Hill, the All Stripes communications and public relations chair, said he loves how Atlanta’s soccer community welcomes everyone.
“People who don’t think of themselves as typical sports fans, people who have never played sports and have no interest in doing so, people who feel like they will be unwelcome in the stands –
they’re all part of All Stripes,” Hill said. “We use our voice to speak up for these people, to bring a different perspective to the table and to show soccer is more than just what happens on the pitch in those 90 minutes.”
When going to an Atlanta United tailgate, fans will find All Stripes there.
“Tailgates create the energy you see in the stadium on match day. People from all walks of life come together to get hyped up, to meet new people and to bond over a shared passion. We share food and drink, we dance, we chant, we sing for Atlanta,” Hill said. At Atlanta United matches, different flags fly in the supporters section. All Stripes flies its own flag, which changes throughout the season. Different flag designs have different representations. These include the Lesbian Pride Flag, which is inclusive of butch, trans and gender non-conforming femme individuals; the Aromantic Flag, which represents a romantic orientation for someone with little to no romantic attraction; and the Gilbert Baker Pride Flag, which is known as the original Pride flag. These flags represent the All Stripes presence, demonstrating that everyone in the community is welcome and safe in the stands. All Stripes shares updated events, news and more on its Instagram and Facebook pages at @AllStripesATL. The organization encourages people to spread the word about the mission to bring more people into their community and highlight Atlanta’s soccer scene.

Shirley Clarke Franklin Park and Piedmont Park offer skyline views, shaded spots for picnics and plenty of space to relax or play. Historic Fourth Ward Park’s Splash Pad along the Atlanta Beltline is one of the most popular, while Centennial Olympic Park’s Fountain of Rings offers an interactive water experience set to music in the heart of Downtown. For a classic Atlanta summer activity, head to the Chattahoochee River for a float trip that combines nature and adventure.

Dining in Atlanta during the summer is as much about the atmosphere as it is

about the food. Rooftop restaurants and bars in neighborhoods like Midtown and Buckhead offer skyline views and breezy evenings, with spots like 9 Mile Station and Drawbar pairing great drinks with sweeping city views. Along the Atlanta Beltline, patio dining creates a social, walkable experience where you can stop for drinks, small plates or a full meal, with favorites like Just Add Honey, Ladybird Grove & Mess Hall and New Realm Brewing Company offering expansive outdoor seating right on the trail.
Food halls such as Krog Street Market, Lee + White, Politan Row at Colony Square and Chattahoochee Food Works make it easy for groups to mix and match flavors.
When the sun goes down, Atlanta keeps the energy going. Rooftop lounges like SkyLounge and The Roof at Ponce City Market offer skyline views and a laid-back evening atmosphere, while seasonal outdoor movie nights pop up across the city at places like Atlantic Station.
For something more interactive, try social gaming spots while enjoying drinks and music. Puttshack, Flight Club Atlanta, F1 Arcade Atlanta and The Painted Duck are especially popular for groups and date nights.
No matter how you plan it, summer in Atlanta offers something new every time you visit, with energy, creativity and experiences that make it one of the best times of year to be in the city.
