The mission of the Atlanta Botanical Garden is to develop and maintain plant collections for display, education, research, conservation and enjoyment.
The vision of the Atlanta Botanical Garden is to be an iconic destination and global leader, dynamically connecting people with plants in support of a thriving planet.
3
In 2025, our mission mattered. The Atlanta Botanical Garden has been blooming in the heart of our city since 1976, when community volunteers first rolled up their sleeves and dug in. Our founders focused on creating a place of beauty, and as the Garden grew—gradually at first, and then with increasing momentum—our work became more multidimensional, embracing a vision which connects people with plants in support of a thriving planet. In 1991, the word “conservation” was added to our mission statement, and today it represents one of the Garden’s core values and guiding principles. We know that plants are vital to our existence here on Earth, and we must care for and conserve them for countless reasons including clean air and water, food production, erosion control, and habitat preservation.
As we face new challenges both locally and globally, the Atlanta Botanical Garden is committed to offering hope and solutions. This year’s annual report highlights initiatives that address our changing world, support resiliency, and encourage a greener, more sustainable future. Nature is a powerful teacher, and here at the Garden, we can learn so much through casual daily strolls, careful observation, and interactions with the incredibly talented staff who maintain our plant collections, conduct laboratory research, and carry out vital fieldwork. The Garden’s Southeastern Center for Conservation is dedicated to saving imperiled plants in our region and making a difference on a global scale, while our Education and Outreach professionals weave conservation messages into classroom lessons, field trips, hands-on workshops, and so much more. In addition to enjoying the Garden’s stunning horticultural displays, we encourage all Garden members and guests to take time to see beyond the beauty, to appreciate the interconnectedness of our world and our work, and to make conscious decisions to act in our planet’s best interests. With each passing season, the Garden grows deeper roots and more expansive branches in our community, thanks to all of the friends and donors who are invested in our mission. We hope you enjoy reading about 2025 as much as we enjoy sharing our successes with you. Together we will continue to dream big and work toward a brighter future.

YEAR IN REVIEW
USING RESOURCES W I S E LY At the Garden, we are committed to operating with innovation and sustainability in mind.
10
The Garden’s diversified income streams include ticket sales, facility rentals, special events, gift shop and restaurant revenue, adult education classes, and more—all helping to strengthen the organization’s financial health and fuel our community-serving goals. Since Chihuly in the Garden premiered here in 2004, seasonal exhibitions have been significant visitation drivers. From Orchid Daze in early spring through Scarecrows in the Garden each fall, the Garden was especially vibrant during three seasons of the year—until Garden Lights, Holiday Nights debuted in 2011, establishing a popular new fourth season of revelry and revenue. For the past 15 years, one million energy-efficient LED lights have turned our Midtown campus into a family-friendly winter wonderland, making chilly holiday nights our most visited, most profitable time of year.
In 2025, in celebration of the Gainesville Garden’s 10th anniversary, we launched a second light show called Gainesville Glows: Lanterns & Lights, to bring our special brand of holiday magic to the north Georgia community. Opening to the public on November 20, it featured luminaries lining the walkways, tall metal lanterns imparting a gorgeous glow, and a walk-through tunnel of white lights serving as the perfect backdrop for fun photoops. A sweeping display of 2,352 color-changing globe lights, choreographed to music, transformed the Ivester Amphitheater into a must-see spectacle, while s’mores, hot chocolate, and other festive treats were enjoyed nearby on the Event Lawn. Additional highlights of 2025 included a series of energy-efficient improvements to update lighting and other systems in Midtown. Most notably, we replaced the former snack bar in the Perennial Garden with a new Magnolia Bistro on the same site. The bistro’s kitchen was enlarged and improved, outdoor seating was added, and the menu was expanded to offer paninis and new options for Garden guests. Also this year, our staff-driven Green Team led the introduction of compostable serving containers throughout the Garden, as we continued working with various partners including Waste Management for cardboard and single stream recycling; Haulin’ Glass for glass recycling; CompostNow for food waste; Live Thrive’s Centers for Hard to Recycle Materials for e-waste; East Jordan Plastics for plant containers and horticultural plastics; and Southern Green Industries to recycle used cooking oil and grease into biodiesel.
Our 2025 exhibition of Alice’s Wonderland featured the iconic mosaiculture installations for which the Atlanta Botanical Garden has become internationally recognized—and these horticultural creations represent another dimension of the Garden’s innovative business model. In collaboration with Mosaïcultures Internationales de Montréal, we have designed dynamic steel armatures that can be planted with colorful patterns in fresh new ways, in different years, at different locations. As traveling shows, these installations provide another key source of revenue. We were thrilled to present Alice’s Adventures at the Garden at the Memphis Botanic Garden in 2022, and Imaginary Worlds at the San Antonio Botanical Garden in 2023—and we look forward to seeing Alice and her storybook companions come to life at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden in 2027.

The Atlanta Botanical Garden serves as a global leader in plant conservation and research through our Southeastern Center for Conservation 12
conservation horticulture, and national and international fieldwork. In 2025, changes on the federal level caused significant impacts to current and future grant support, with both immediate and long-term ramifications for the endangered plants and imperiled ecosystems that we work so hard to protect. During this time, our team has worked even harder to build new partnerships, explore new funding avenues, and save rare species from extinction.
While many of our partnerships are with local, state, and regional entities, one that particularly stood out this year was with DJ, the orchid-sniffing dog. Our collaboration began in 2024, when the USDA Forest Service enlisted conservation dog trainer Dr. Karen DeMatteo and her Belgian Malinois, DJ. The dog was trained to detect the scents of orchid roots—the more common large whorled pogonia (Isotria verticillata) and the endangered small whorled pogonia (Isotria medeoloides)—two species which can remain dormant underground for a variety of reasons, making them invisible to even the keenest human eyes. In 2025, we began field trials with DJ in the southern Appalachian mountains. One of DJ’s early successes involved sniffing out a small whorled pogonia population in Rabun County, Georgia—the first seen there in 28 years. Our work with DJ will continue through 2028, and we look forward to sharing future updates on this very special canine connection to conservation.
Following the devastation of Hurricane Helene in September 2024, we focused on efforts to understand how this unprecedented storm affected rare plant species across the region. For example, the long-term effects on populations of Roan Mountain Bluets (Houstonia montana) in rocky high-elevation balds in North Carolina and Tennessee are now being closely monitored, as is the habitat of the Miccosukee Gooseberry (Ribes echinellum), a critically imperiled plant found only in two small sites in Florida and South Carolina. Further afield, we continued to work with partners in Ecuador at The Lovett School’s 1,245-acre high-elevation Siempre Verde cloud forest preserve. In 2025, we aided recovery efforts led by Ecuadorian ecologists and students from the Yachay Tech University and Jardín Botánico Yachay, to address the aftermath of extreme drought in this historically rainy region alongside intense wildfires that ravaged the mossy green elfin forests. As the planet warms and climatic patterns continue to shift, we know that catastrophic weather events will keep impacting plants and people in profound ways. Here at the Atlanta Botanical Garden, we are dedicated to responding with expertise and compassion, employing best practices and scientific rigor, to solve complex problems to benefit all living things. 13
INSPIRING THE FUTURE The Garden is a place where ideas spark action.
Throughout the year, people of all ages enjoy the seasonal splendor of spring bulbs, summer blossoms, fall foliage, and holiday lights—and along the way, there is ample opportunity for us to cultivate curiosity and educate the public about the power of plants. School field trips are often the first time that children experience the Garden, and we have a special commitment to serving K-12 students from Title I schools. In 2025, we provided engaging STEM enrichment education programming to 18,807 Title I students and chaperones, both on-site and through school outreach visits, connecting with 99 Title I schools across 14 Georgia counties, all free of charge. With topics ranging from seed starting to soil quality testing and plant ecology, the Garden’s interactive lessons are undeniably fun while also promoting critical scientific thinking, inspiring young people to solve real-world problems today and tomorrow. In 2025, we launched SPEAK (Students Promoting Environmental Awareness & Knowledge), a new program to bolster teen volunteerism. We invited high
14
school students to apply to become Garden ambassadors of science and sustainability, and a core group of seven teens was selected during this pilot year. These student volunteers were trained to engage with guests at interactive SPEAK stations throughout the Garden, and through brief conversations on sustainable gardening, gardening for wildlife, and related concepts, they shared small but effective ways to become caretakers of our planet. This exchange of ideas clarified our understanding of what is important to today’s teens and provided context for intergenerational conversations about sustainability and protecting finite resources. For adults, we continued to offer a broad array of classes featuring topics such as native plants, gardening for birds, seed saving, propagating methods, and regenerative gardening. As always, our Fuqua and Alston lectures are open and free to the public. One notable highlight in 2025 was Zoë Schlanger’s presentation of The Light Eaters, a groundbreaking work on plant intelligence, plant behavior, and how plants are adapting in a time of accelerating climate change. Art in the Garden is a meaningful part of the guest experience, and this year, in addition to art exhibitions and musical performances, poetry was added to the mix. We held the first annual Atlanta Haiku Festival in April 2025, where workshops, poetry readings, and special programming made this inaugural festival one to remember. More than 400 haiku submissions were judged by a panel of experts, and winners in the youth, novice, and advanced categories were posted on plaques throughout Storza Woods. We welcome future opportunities to engage Garden members and guests in the quiet contemplation of our natural world, helping to foster personal connection and proactive caretaking for our planet. 15
GIVING BACK
Volunteers enrich the Garden in countless ways
In 2025, more than 500 volunteers in Atlanta and Gainesville contributed more than 33,000 hours of enthusiasm and energy to programs and projects. They shared their valuable life experience by lending a hand with day-to-day plant cultivation and maintenance, event and fundraising support, conservation lab work in Georgia, conservation field work in Florida, and administrative assistance on both Garden campuses. Volunteers engage with visitors as Docents, GEMs (Garden Essential Maintenance volunteers), and OKRAs (Outdoor Kitchen Resource Assistants), among many other vital roles. Most notably, in 2025, eight incredible volunteers devoted a combined total of more than 3,000 hours to the Garden—the equivalent of nearly two years of full-time work. Their service, and that of every Garden volunteer, is vital to the Garden’s success.
Everlastings Award The Everlastings Award was first presented in 2001 to thank a group of volunteers who had supported the Garden for many consecutive years. Ten years later, in 2011, a second group of Everlastings were recognized, celebrating their 10 consecutive years of service. In 2025, for only the third time in the history of the Garden, an Everlastings Award was given to 41 volunteers for volunteering for 17 or more consecutive years.
