2024 Annual Report

Page 1

The mission of the Atlanta Botanical Garden is to develop and maintain plant collections for display, education, research, conservation and enjoyment.

The vision of the Atlanta Botanical Garden is to be an iconic destination and global leader, dynamically connecting people with plants in support of a thriving planet.

2024 was a beautiful, bountiful year.

For twelve glotrious months, the Atlanta Botanical Garden was brimming with flowers, fruit, foliage, and fun. We were frequently reminded how our natural world sparks joy, enriches our physical and mental well-being, and sustains every aspect of life on Earth—and in this annual report, we reflect on the countless ways that plants nourish us in mind, body, and spirit.

From January through December, the Garden’s two locations in Midtown and Gainesville welcomed a record number of 805,662 visitors, thanks in large part to our innovative programs and exhibitions. From Orchid Daze and Atlanta Blooms to Scarecrows in the Garden and Garden Lights, Holiday Nights, members and guests enjoyed four seasons of splendor.

In addition to the simple pleasures of enjoying time in nature with family and friends, guests look to our expert horticulturists for home gardening ideas and inspiration, and it is particularly wonderful to be able to pass on knowledge about the wide variety of plants that we eat. Rows of rainbow-hued vegetables grow year-round in the Edible Garden, figs and persimmons ripen near the Outdoor Kitchen, cacao pods hang high in the trees in the Tropical Rotunda, and vanilla orchids grace the pergola in the Fuqua Orchid Center. Horticultural displays creatively showcase edible plants, interpretive signage offers valuable information, and our talented team is always happy to answer questions.

Here at the Garden, we embrace every opportunity to educate and engage our community. In 2024, we continued to make meaningful connections with students and teachers from Title I schools by providing no-cost K-12 STEM enrichment aligned with statewide grade-level learning standards. We enhanced our array of free drop-in family programs, and we added new adult education options—from culinary classes to hands-on orchid care clinics—that quickly sold out. Beyond the Garden gates, our Community Outreach team forged new collaborations with Trellis Horticultural Therapy Alliance

and Respite Care Atlanta, helping to improve motor skills, cognitive health, and social connections for local seniors and adults living with disabilities.

This year was notable for the number of partnerships extending far beyond the city limits. The Garden’s Amphibian Program raised and released 331 striped newts in partnership with the University of Georgia and The Jones Center at Ichauway as part of an effort to reestablish a self-sustaining wild population in the lower Flint River basin. Our Southeastern Center for Conservation collaborated extensively with dozens of partner organizations on regionally and globally significant projects while working to conserve more than 40 rare and imperiled species in the wild through fieldwork in seven states, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, and Costa Rica. And our International Plant Exploration Program focused on building connections in southeastern Asia, strengthening agreements with the Botanical Survey of India and the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.

Few organizations make such an incredible impact both locally and globally, and we are thrilled to report that all of these accomplishments took place during another year of strong fiscal growth. Over and above annual operating goals, we continued to secure major capital commitments to expand the Garden’s footprint by nearly eight acres and develop a second pedestrian entrance on the 22-mile Atlanta Beltline loop. Details about this historic campaign can be found on the final pages of this report, and we look forward to continuing to share exciting expansion updates with you.

As the seasons change and the Garden grows, one thing remains constant—our enduring appreciation for the Garden’s incomparable donors and friends. We are truly grateful for your generosity and all the ways we gather together around our verdant table. Thank you for ensuring that the Garden thrives today and remains a very special place where, together, we will keep cultivating flowers and food, community and connection, and a healthy, hopeful future for generations to come.

YEAR IN REVIEW

ENJOYING THE FRUITS OF OUR LABORS

It takes many hands to plan and polish our public display gardens—but it is well worth the effort!

A team of 61 horticulturists at our Midtown and Gainesville locations handle every aspect of garden design and maintenance, from plant propagation and soil remediation to pruning and composting. On weekday mornings, our indoor and outdoor horticulture staff are assisted by a crew of GEMs (Garden Essential Maintenance volunteers), including 15 to 20 GEMs who regularly volunteer in our Edible Garden.

Next to the Fuqua Orchid Center, the Edible Garden is one of the spots where horticultural creativity really shines. It is a botanical feast for the eyes, demonstrating that fruits and vegetables make beautiful landscape plants in addition to nourishing every culture on Earth.

Members and guests love seeing heirloom vegetables, tried-and-true selections, and brand-new varieties growing in this vibrant space—and in 2024, cold-weather crops were just as plentiful as warmer-season standouts. Our Horticulture and Education teams worked together to get ready for our annual Refugee Recipe Celebration, making sure we planted key ingredients far in advance that chefs from different countries would then incorporate in small plates for the Garden guests. For this June celebration in honor of

World Refugee Day, we grew and harvested ingredients including roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa), which is native to West Africa; papalo (Porophyllum ruderale), a lesser-known cilantro substitute; and shiso (Perilla frutescens), a minty Asian herb; among other specialty items.

While the Edible Garden is primarily a demonstration garden and teaching space, any produce not used on-site for culinary programming is donated to nonprofit partners such as Concrete Jungle and Food4Life. The Garden also enjoys partnering with dozens of local chefs and restaurateurs each year through our Well Seasoned Chef and Fresh Plates dinner series. This year we were thrilled to launch a new Georgia Grown dinner series in collaboration with the Georgia Grown division of the Georgia Department of Agriculture. These dinners spotlighted pecans, chicken, peaches, and other signature crops in four-course tasting menus, each presented by a chef and farmer duo to the delight of guests in our Outdoor Kitchen.

In 2024, our Gainesville location started an edible garden of its own, adjacent to the new Pass Family Orchard Parking area. Complementing the ornamental fruit trees and shrubs located between the parking bays, this new space was designed as a traditional “in ground” southern vegetable garden, and we look forward to offering edible gardening and culinary programming for children and adults in Gainesville in upcoming seasons.

CELEBRATING THE SPICE OF LIFE

Events and exhibitions give every season at the Atlanta Botanical Garden its own unique and festive flavors.

Since Garden Lights, Holiday Nights debuted in 2011, the Garden has offered a yearround calendar jam-packed with programming. On crisp winter days, radiant spring mornings, long summer twilights, and bright autumnal afternoons, there is always something new to see and do.

In 2024, the Garden presented a very special Orchid Daze, featuring fragrant, tropical blooms complemented by the sparkling work of Caribbean-born, Atlanta-based mixed media artist Lillian Blades. Site-specific collage installations took advantage of the abundant light in the glasshouses, utilizing mirrors and translucent colored cutouts to create patterns in sun and shadow, revealing the beauty of orchids in a whole new light. This exhibition opened on February 14 to coincide with our sold-out annual Valentines in the Garden event, which was themed “Love is in the Air,” and proved to be a memorable night of delicious drinks, dining, dancing, and more.

Also in February, the Atlanta Botanical Garden Flower Show’s biennial showcase of artistic and horticultural excellence took center stage. Held every other year since 2018, the show welcomes exhibitors to display their talents in dozens of judged competitions in Day Hall, Mershon Hall, and Gardenhouse Gallery. We are thrilled to report that, this year, our show was recognized by The Garden Club of America (GCA) as a Sanctioned non-GCA Major Flower Show, a status granted to only three organizations nationwide whose shows meet set criteria and rise to the caliber of a GCA Major Flower Show.

During our annual springtime bulb festivals in both Midtown and Gainesville, our gardens dazzled with many new tulip, anemone, and narcissus varieties on display. Spring culminated with the April 27 premiere of Glass In Flight in Gainesville and the May 11 opening of Alice’s Wonderland Returns in Midtown. Summer exhibitions such as these are key to attracting first-time guests and encouraging repeat visitation, keeping the Garden experience fresh for all visitors while helping to bolster the organization’s bottom line.

Fall was fantastic—from Scarecrows in the Garden to the annual Great Pumpkin-Carving Festival—and Garden Lights, Holiday Nights rounded out the year, shining more brightly than ever from November 16, 2024 through January 12, 2025. New color combinations glowed in various locations throughout the Garden, new botanical light installations blossomed in the Perennial Garden, enhanced Holiday Model Trains chugged along in Alston Overlook, and an updated Nature’s Wonders soundtrack entertained visitors in Storza Woods.

Once again this year, Atlanta’s urban oasis was the perfect place to savor the seasons and delight in the magic of the moment.

PROVIDING FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Education and outreach programs plant the seeds for lifelong learning.

Throughout 2024, visitors of all ages, from newborns to nonagenarians, took in the sights, scents, and sounds of the Garden, experiencing first-hand how unplugged, unstructured time in nature truly activates the brain, restores vim and vigor, and uplifts the soul.

While any garden stroll can do wonders for mind, body, and spirit, there are also many opportunities to join us for regularly scheduled drop-in activities, to learn more about the natural world. Free with admission, popular family programs include Storybook Time, Garden Grooves, Shows for Seedlings, and Frog Feedings at the plant-filled tanks in the Fuqua Conservatory Lobby. One morning a week, staff horticulturists lead hands-on Kids’ Gardening Activities in the Lou Glenn Children’s Garden, working directly with children to plant seeds, water seedlings, harvest vegetables, and chat about how food grows.

Day camps during school breaks allow kids to be immersed in our one-of-a-kind botanical setting and interact with our talented Education team. In 2024, in addition

to camps focused more broadly on nature, science, art, and adventure, we offered two weeks of Garden Chef Camp where campers could taste a wide variety of freshly-picked produce grown in our Edible Garden and discover how it can be used to make delicious treats.

Even more culinary experiences were available for interested adults in 2024. We began offering an Edible Container Gardening class geared toward home gardeners with small yards, patios, and window boxes, and we added several cooking classes, including a Miso Making Workshop, Pickling for Beginners, Global Street Food, Fermented Beverages, and Homemade Pie Making. We also hosted dozens of free-with-admission Garden Chef Demos in the Outdoor Kitchen as well as our annual Vanilla Sunday and ChocolateCovered Weekend festivities.

Across the Atlanta metro area, our Plant. Eat. Repeat. outreach programs helped to address food insecurity by providing technical assistance and workshops at community gardens and urban farms, partnering with groups such as the Georgia Aquarium, Food Well Alliance, and Friends of Refugees, to share skills and increase access to locally harvested fruits, herbs, and vegetables.

As always, we invite our entire community to tap into the Garden’s expertise and educational offerings, which extend far beyond the edible gardening programming highlighted here. Beyond beauty and nourishment, plants are vital to our existence—providing resources for medicine, household goods, clothing, and shelter, and improving the quality of air, water, and habitat for all living creatures. For all these reasons and more, we will continue to teach and inspire people to care for plants… and our planet.

NURTURING NATURE’S ABUNDANCE

Conservation and research initiatives focus on protecting the irreplaceable biodiversity of plant life on Earth.

In 2024, the Atlanta Botanical Garden’s Southeastern Center for Conservation continued to grow in size and scope. Prioritizing partnerships and leveraging resources, our dynamic team of five Ph.D. researchers and 33 conservation scientists worked in on-site laboratories, greenhouses, and nurseries; conducted fieldwork to conserve plant species in the wild; and completed 18 grant-funded projects in collaboration with federal, state, and nonprofit partners.

As an example of one effective partnership, our team worked with the world’s largest plant conservation network, Botanical Garden Conservation International, and the US Forest Service, to tackle two projects involving seedbanking species with narrow geographic ranges. The first project supported the seedbank preservation of the critically endangered Balsam Mountain gentian (Gentiana latidens) endemic to North Carolina’s Pisgah National Forest, and the second targeted three species of baby boot orchids (Lepanthes) found only in Puerto Rico’s El Yunque National Forest.

Our conservation scientists also served as lead mentors in the Rare Plant RaMP (Research & Mentoring for Post-Baccalaureates in Biological Sciences) Network, an impactful initiative funded by the National Science Foundation. This program strengthens the pipeline of talent in our field by providing emerging plant scientists with intensive research experiences at four host institutions: Atlanta Botanical Garden, California Botanic Garden, Morton Arboretum, and San Diego Botanic Garden.

Convening partners was especially important this year, and the Garden was honored to host the Southeastern Partners in Plant Conservation (SePPCon) conference, organized by the Southeastern Plant Conservation Alliance, in October 2024. SePPCon participants hailed from 15 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, and Costa Rica, and more than 70 speakers shared groundbreaking research, newly described species, culturally significant plant conservation strategies, and cutting-edge technologies.

Scientists report that 45% of the world’s plant species are threatened with extinction. At the Atlanta Botanical Garden, we have remained dedicated to the steady expansion of Conservation and Research initiatives over the past decade, recognizing the need to act now to protect the interconnected web of life.

ATLANTA’S GARDEN GATEWAY A

Bold Entrance to our Sustainable Future

Inspired by the citywide vision of a more walkable, bikeable, connected Atlanta, the Garden is moving forward with a transformational initiative to expand by nearly eight acres along Piedmont Avenue. This beautifully designed expansion will link the existing Garden to the 22-mile Atlanta Beltline loop—dramatically increasing community access and engagement—and we are exceptionally grateful for all those who have supported this visionary project to date.

As of December 31, 2024, the Atlanta’s Garden Gateway campaign had secured a total of $122,934,728. Gifts from the inception of the campaign through the end of 2024 are listed below. We will continue to recognize the ongoing generosity of campaign donors in future annual reports.
