ATL PARKS & REC SPRING 2019

Page 1

CampRegisternowfor BestFriends!

Welcome to your City of Atlanta Parks and Recreation Spring 2019 Catalog!

Spring is the season of new beginnings and transformations. The temperature rises to a more bearable degree, and the leaves we saw fall and flowers we saw wilt will now bud into lush, green, trees, and plants. We have been eager for spring to arrive!

It brings an excitement to the Department of Parks and Recreation and I am thrilled to be heading into the first full season as your Commissioner. We have much to be proud of including the addition of 9 new minisoccer pitches located at 7 city parks, the completion of another year of afterschool programming serving thousands of Atlanta youth, 2 new Atlanta Hawks themed basketball courts at Central Park and Selena S. Butler Park, numerous renovated parks, the opening of the Northwest BeltLine Connector Trail in Atlanta Memorial Park, and many other successes.

We are also steadfast in completing many large projects currently in construction. We are moving forward with community meetings and the initial phase of the Westside Park at Bellwood Quarry. When finished, the Westside Park at Bellwood Quarry will be the largest park in the City of Atlanta and it will increase the city’s emergency drinking water reserve from 3 to thirty days. Additionally, we are nearing the halfway point for the state-of-the-art Grant Park Gateway Project. And the intermediate mountain bike trail expansion at Southside Park is near completion as well.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars and remember to register for the 38th year of the Department of Parks Camp Best Friends. Registration begins March 1st. Be sure to sign up early to reserve your campers spot. The program will run from June 3rd – August 2nd 2019. Camp Best Friends serve children, youth, seniors, and our special needs population.

The City of Atlanta has great parks, gazebos, pavilions, and trails. We have countless educational and athletic programs at recreation centers, golf courses, mini-soccer pitches, and tennis courts. We hope you take advantage of all that the Department of Parks and Recreation has to offer.

We all know that recreation and parks are invaluable in our communities, and we will continue working to provide exceptional parks, facilities, and programs.

It's a great day to be in the Parks!
