ATL PARKS & REC SUMMER 2019

Page 1

LETTER FROM THE COMMISSIONER

Temperatures are warming up which means another Atlanta summer is soon to arrive. ATL Parks & Rec has a variety of ways to help cool off during the summer heat including eight splashpads and eleven outdoor pools. We are excited to be kicking off the summer pool season Memorial Day weekend. Be sure to follow our social media accounts (@ATLparksandrec) for further information.

As we approach the halfway point of 2019, we have a lot to be proud of. The Grant Park Gateway Project is 70% complete with an anticipated date of completion in late 2019. Meanwhile, construction on the Westside Park has been initiated with expected completion in early 2020. These projects and others similar will change the Atlanta landscape for decades while also expanding greenspace and offering recreational opportunities for Atlanta residents and visitors.

Additionally, in March we opened the intermediate mountain bike trail at Southside Sports Complex. The trail adds an additional 3.8 miles to the existing 1.2-mile beginner trail. The third and final expert phase of the trail should be completed by the end of the year. We also cut the ribbon on the new Ella Mae Wade Brayboy Memorial Park, unveiled two renovated outdoor basketball courts at Dunbar and Thomasville Recreation Centers, and opened the completely renovated John F. Kennedy Park.

Summer is the season to hit the links! Be sure to visit the city golf courses this summer at Browns Mill, Alfred “Tup” Holmes, Chastain, and Candler Park. The golf courses have seen major improvement projects including ADA improvements at the Chastain Park Golf Course clubhouse, a new roof at the Candler Park Golf Course clubhouse, renovation of the on-course restroom and a complete bunker renovations at “Tup” Holmes Golf Course, and Browns Mill Golf Course has a renovated restroom between holes four and five. To see all of these improvements and more, you can purchase a “Fore Pass” that gives you significant discounts to all the city golf courses. For more information visit CityOfAtlantaGolf.com

And don’t forget to mark your calendars and register for the 38th year of ATL Parks & Rec Camp Best Friends. Registration is open and camp locations are filling up so sign up now to reserve your camper’s spot. The program will run from June 3rd – August 2nd, 2019. Camp Best Friends serves children, youth, seniors, and our special needs population.

Lastly, we are working on our parks and recreation comprehensive plan and will resume community engagement meetings in the upcoming months. With community input, this plan will lay out the 10-year vision, goals, and objectives to elevate Atlanta’s parks and recreation system into a world-class system. Meeting information will be provided as we work to confirm dates and locations.

We all know that recreation and parks are invaluable in our communities, and we will continue working to provide exceptional parks, facilities, and programs.

It’s a great day to be in parks and recreation!

Best regards,

Commissioner, City of Atlanta Department of Parks and Recreation
