Library Foundation Promotes Early Childhood Literacy The Atlanta-Fulton Public Library Foundation believes that one of the greatest advantages we can give our young children is the early development of language skills.

Did you know...

- Children who are read to at least three times a week by a family member are almost twice as likely to score in the top 25% of learners as compared to children who are read to less than 3 times a week.

- By age 2, children who are read to regularly display greater language comprehension, larger vocabularies, and higher cognitive skills than their peers.

- By age 2 a child’s brain is as active as an adult’s and by ages 3-10, a child’s brain is more than twice as active as an adult’s.

Books for Babies is a library program

designed to educate parents about the importance of reading to, and talking with, their babies every day. Parents participate in a baby story time to learn developmental tips and see librarians demonstrate best practices when reading with babies.

Parents are given a bag of resources including a library card application, a board books, reading tips, and book suggestions.

The program reaches out to schools, hospitals, parenting classes and other community organizations.

Pecha Kucha was founded in Tokyo in 2003 as a way for designers to meet and share their work in public. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for “chitchat,” it rests on a simple and momentum-driven presentation format: 20 images x 20 seconds.

Divided States Fine Art Exhibition Sunday, February 11, 2018 – Sunday, March 25, 2018 Artist Talk: 3:00 p.m. Sunday, February 11.

In recognition of Black History Month, the Auburn Avenue Research Library will present Divided States, a select exhibition of artwork curated by Tracy Murrell from various art series by renowned artist Charly Palmer (“Tar Baby”, “White Wash”, “Stain-glass”, Eminent Domain”, “Blackness” and the most recent “Silent”). Divided States boldly chronicles the unending evolution of a profound socially consciences artistic vision, that unapologetically roots the Black experience at the center of American History. Charly Palmer’s intrepid textural brushwork, signature bold color palette and eloquent layering technique, forms a perfect union that gives voice to, we the people who continue to live in the Divided States of America.

Supreme Injustice: Slavery in the Nation’s Highest Court Book Signing and Lecture Sunday, February 18. 3:00 p.m.

The Baton Foundation, in collaboration with the Auburn Avenue Research Library on African American Culture and History, will host distinguished legal historian Professor Paul Finkelman, who will discuss his latest publication, Supreme Injustice: Slavery in the Nation’s Highest Court.

Gente de Pelo Malo (People with Bad Hair) Film Screening and Community Discussion Sunday, March 4. 3:00 p.m.

The Baton Foundation, in collaboration with the Auburn Avenue Research Library on African American Culture and History, will host a screening of Gente de Pelo Malo (People with Bad Hair). This documentary film explores the relevant issue and what forms women’s ideas and decisions about wearing natural hair. It features interviews, and offers perspectives of Black women and men in diverse regions of the world including: Equatorial Guinea, Spain, Uruguay, Cuba, and the United States, creating a bridge between Africa and its Diaspora by identifying and increasing the understanding of a common problem that negatively impacts Africans and people of African descent.

Rikers: An American Jail Film Screening and Community Discussion Sunday, March 11. 3:00 p.m.

The Baton Foundation, in collaboration with the Auburn Avenue Research Library on African American Culture and History, will host a screening of the riveting award-winning documentary, Rikers: An American Jail. This powerful film brings you face to face with men and women who have endured incarceration at Rikers Island. The Malcolm Omari Hill Scholarship Fund, Inc. provides free instructional safe driving classes for teens and young adults. These are instructional classes only; we do not provide a behind-the-wheel driving experience. We utilize an instructor, interactive audio, video and printed material to engage the students and teach the laws, regulations and information which cover the very important privilege of driving.
