AFPLF.ORG The Atlanta-Fulton Public Library Foundation is excited to announce the launch of its new website.

The Foundation is the non-profit organization that works exclusively to provide funds for the AtlantaFulton Public Library System – which is the largest library system in the State of Georgia.

Tom Petty knew something about true belonging. The rock and roller died recently, but spent his career exposing our courage and vulnerability in his songs. Working Like a Dog

W

e are proud to work with over 1,700 volunteers across our 34 locations. Adults and teens

help

with

clerical

projects, shelving tasks and programs such as art classes, chess games, language lessons and yoga. Cinnamon, Dudley and Fergus are current library volunteers, but not like you would guess. They have four legs instead of two.

These registered and trained therapy dogs bring their owners to nine of our library locations

to

provide

opportunities

for

children to read aloud in a safe, comfortable and quiet setting. Parents sign up for 15 minute sessions perfect for anxious or reluctant readers. Dogs like to listen to every story and provide a calming presence.

The volunteer teams are certified through several dog therapy groups including Happy Tails Pet Therapy, Humane Hearts, READing Paws and Therapy Dogs International. Verna Manstrom and Helen Hodges volunteer with their therapy dogs Surcee and Reagan through C.A.R.E.ing Paws and participate in the Books with Pups Program at the Milton Library.

Pat Johnston loves introducing Bentley to children and parents at the East Roswell Library.

Johnston stated, “The most recent comment from a parent was from a mother whose son had been diagnosed with autism. She said that she wanted him to read to someone who was nonjudgmental. She thought a dog was the perfect listener. I think that is one of the best things about reading to a dog.”
