J

ackie Ingol volunteering at the South Fulton Library in 2000. She has completed over 560 volunteer hours, but unlike most of our volunteers, her work doesn’t involve the books. Jackie helps make sure our indoor plants stay alive and thrive. “I have a passion for plants and books,” said Jackie, who has served at the South Fulton and Southwest Libraries for many years, even completing hours for the Master Gardener program. Jackie has spent over 1,200 volunteer shifts watering and weeding the plants at the four libraries, including teaching younger patrons more about plants. In addition to volunteering at four libraries, Jackie was studying and working to become a science teacher. “It is my heart’s desire to teach horticulture,” said Jackie.

On February 10, Jackie proudly

participated in her commencement ceremony and received a Bachelor of Arts from Western Governors University. She stated, “Now, I will have to the opportunity to share my passions with young people as a professional educator.” We are grateful to volunteer Jackie Ingol for her dedication to making the library the best possible place to be. We are proud to recognize her and all of our 2017 volunteers during National Volunteer Appreciation Week in April.

A

couple of times each week someone will tell me - no one uses the library anymore. That’s like saying no one listens to rock and roll anymore. In fact, more than 12 million people in Fulton County used the library last year. That is more than 1 million people every month. Since, 2014 the number of visitors to Fulton County libraries has increased 9.4%. What might surprise some people is that more than two-thirds of those 12 million users took advantage of our electronic resources. Our digital platform is skyrocketing! The library circulated 400,000 e-books last year. That’s a 69% increase in virtual circulation in one year! Even more notable, in 2014, the library only circulated 135,000 e-books, which means in the last three years our virtual circulation has increased almost 200%!

Rock on! In a few weeks, the library will initiate its annual summer reading program where we encourage kids, teens and adults to read during the long, hot summer. The theme this year is Libraries Rock! (As you might imagine, our specialty is air guitar.) In an effort to meet demand for digital books, we will be rolling out our new online summer reading platform as a companion to our traditional in-house services. This collection of essays, edited by Rochelle Riley, calls for America to understand what life post-slavery remains like for many African Americans who are descended from people whose unpaid labor built this land, but have had to spend the last century and a half carrying the dual burden of fighting racial injustice and rising above the lowered expectations and hateful bigotry that attempt to keep them shackled to that past. Farmer, who will discuss her latest publication: Remaking Black Power: How Black Women Transformed an Era. Complicating the assumption that sexism relegated black women to the margins of the movement, Farmer demonstrates how female activists fought for more inclusive understandings of Black Power and social justice by developing new ideas about black womanhood.
