characters in the books. You might have to read between the lines, but isn’t that the very definition of murkiness?
The first two books were written
of Houston, takes a unique approach to discussing leadership – by asking us to assess our own fears and sense of vulnerability. Sort of sounds like The Hate U Give and Allegedly, doesn’t it?
for young adults. Both authors are African-American women making their fiction debuts. Both stories feature young African-American girls caught up in the murky circumstances of their lives, which isn’t surprising considering the murky circumstances of the world today. The YA genre is gaining traction as the go-to place for edgy, social commentary. We used to read fiction to learn more about ourselves and each other. Novels were social in nature. They were indictments and celebrations. Now, more often than not, novels are simply entertainment, but some stories have power. The Hate U Give and Allegedly are just such stories. They tell us much more about ourselves than the
Dare to Lead is equally crafty. Brown, a professor at the University
Dare to Lead is nonfiction and based on more than 30 years of research, including Brown’s work with the leaders of Fortune 500 companies and the United States military. It’s a fascinating look at the underlying obstacles to courage. One of the most meaningful findings in Brown’s book is this: “We don’t shift our values based on context. We are called to live in a way that is aligned with what we hold most important regardless of the setting or situation.” Tolerance has an evil counterweight

Library Volunteer Returns to Encourage the Next Generation Heather Staniszewski Former volunteer and current Emory University college student Hyunjun “Max” Ahn returned to the Ocee Library to speak with students participating in the September Job Fair. He excelled at math and science classes in high school and served 62 hours leading the CAST tutoring program at Ocee. Max said, “I never imagined I could be in the position to provide advice or inspiration, so it was an honor to meet all the students and parents after I spoke.” Max moved here in the 8th grade and taught himself English by reading books and watching movies or CNN without subtitles. He talked about how his move to the United States affected how he approaches every new situation. “I did not fit in because all the students already had their own friend groups, and my language barrier really kept me from being outgoing. My friend had to literally translate whatever my teachers were saying, so I had a legitimate excuse to simply stay in my room. No one was really going to blame me if I simply had given up, but instead, I stepped up and explored.” Tutoring helped Max because it relied heavily on clear communications, so he had to facilitate the conversation without help. He is proud that unlike his friends, he did everything for college financial aid by himself including communicating with the IRS office, the school and the scholarship office. He encourages others to explore more and to constantly improve saying, “Don’t complain that you don’t have resources or any opportunities to explore what you want.”

Max shared more about all of the things he has explored including Latin, where he won competitions; history because he loves the impact on society; computer science because it is logic based and a rising trend with employers, so he learned Java in his AP class, taught himself C++ and even won competitions at Georgia Tech; and business by buying stocks as soon as he received a social security number. He completed an internship with Emory Cancer Institute last summer, is exploring current research opportunities and serves as a Sophomore Advisor. He can’t wait for his next adventure stating, “I am always at the edge of the cliff, exploring something that I wasn’t always prepared for.”
