September

and Fall have arrived and it’s time for the weather to get the memo. This time of year we hope to layoff the allergy meds and enjoy lower temps and humidity! We are at the beginning of "fake fall" now but I will enjoy the teaser while it lasts!

Welcome to the family Wesley Ralph who arrive July 24th. Right at that moment just another room of my heart that I didn’t even know was there, opened up just like I had loved him forever. That’s the only way I can come close to describing a grandparent’s love for their grandchild. Our homes are much like our filled hearts. They truly become a full home when it is personalized and becomes us in many ways. With four healthy beautiful grands Buddy and Maggie are very full, but there is always room for more!

We have so many great home-features this fall starting with this beautiful East Memphis home, created for an active family of six, including their fur babies that even have their own special space. This custom gem Is perfectly designed for entertaining family and friends all through the year.

I started looking up some fun things do for adults and with our grands this fall. From fundraisers, festivals and to my favorite F word, FOOTBALL, there is something for everyone. Whether entertaining at home or enjoying some great outdoors time, wishing you a safe and wonder fall, but don’t ditch your allergy meds yet, because if a miracle doesn’t come before the ragweed comes, you will need them.

As I sign every September letter, Hotty Toddy!

Covid-Era Build Blossoms With Intentionality

STORY BY CARA SIEVERS | DESIGN BY SPRUCE
BUILT BY RKA CONSTRUCTION | ARCHITECTURE BY DAVID ANDERSON
PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH VOIGT
PHOTOGRAPHY

Theundulating curves of a pair of midcentury modern club chairs. The crisp lines of a blue Tartan plaid wallpaper. The weathered stain of vaulted pine ceiling.

Each and every element of this beautiful East Memphis new build has been carefully and artfully curated to create the most personalized, comfortable and chic living space. And perhaps – as crazy as it sounds – there might be a global pandemic to “thank” for at least a tiny bit of the patience required to get the articulation of this design just right.

The homeowners, who are near-lifelong Memphians, acquired the two-acre Walnut Grove lot in Summer of 2019, and they quickly began planning. Moving from a nearby neighborhood, the family enjoyed watching daily progress on their build, which was nearly finished by the time COVID-19 arrived in the United States.

As we all know, an increase in demand and a slow

in supply, caused some unprecedented delays in construction and design during the pandemic. But instead of halting progress on this gorgeous estate, the state of the world might have complimented the deliberate intentionality of the home’s design. Piece by piece, this estate grew into the perfect eclectic mix of traditional and modern elements, creating a comfortable space for the homeowners.

Visitors are greeted by a stately circular driveway that leads to a grand, well-manicured, welcoming entrance. The exterior boasts a massive X-foot, pane-glass window, framed by a rusty natural brick that, interestingly enough, was originally set to be painted.

The warm rosy tone continues inside the home as part of the updated traditional color palette, featuring shades of blush, sage, burgundy, forest green, slate blue, gold, mustard, gray and cream. The colors, patterns and textures all have a warm, natural feel, including a striking vaulted pine ceiling crowning the sitting room at the base of the colossal front window.

the sitting room is an elegant, but not overstated, dining room, complete with a built-in buffet area lining the entire adjacent hallway. Handsome burgundy lacquered cabinetry is flanked by antiqued mirror-doored butler’s pantries, exemplifying the theme of attractive, but usable space throughout the home.

“Everything we chose for this house was selected with the family in mind,” said Selena McAdams, owner & interior designer of East Memphis design firm & storefront, Spruce.

“A very active family lives here – mom, dad, two boys and three dogs – we wanted the spaces to be comfortable, but we also wanted them to be usable. And it was important that the materials and upholstery be exceptionally durable and able to stand the test of time.”

Flooring materials, upholstery fabrics and even finishes were selected intentionally to fit the family’s lifestyle. And as every mother in the world would appreciate, even the dining chairs were covered with an easy-to-clean vinyl (while still using a more luxurious fabric on the back of the chair to be visible when all chairs were pushed under the table).

Speaking of upholstery, that was perhaps the area of the build that felt the biggest impact from the pandemic. Upholstery lead time during this home’s design process was a whopping 35 weeks – a waiting period that is normally around four-to-five weeks. But, again, the fabrics, furniture pieces and projects that were worth waiting for made it into the home, ensuring that each element was specifically and confidently chosen.

Another impactful design decision made mid-stream was the raising of the family room ceilings from 15 feet to 18 feet. The open concept is made even more extraordinary and airy, and the light from outside becomes a major design element of the interior of the home.

In fact, several design decisions were made with the goal of making this massively grand and open space feel cozier. Kitchen cabinets and other trim and millwork throughout the home were painted a warm gray tone to keep the spaces friendly and comfortable, and wallpaper was used strategically to add definition to certain rooms and hallways.

Justoff the kitchen and down a back hallway is a special space just for the home’s four-legged inhabitants. Pocket doggy gates cordon off a space with hardy firerock flooring so the dogs can have their own little paradise. And in these quarters, you’ll also find the laundry room, complete with custom-built dog crates and a dog wash for all those dirty paws.

The dogs aren’t the only ones having fun. You can often find the family gathered in their plaid-clad game room, complete with convertible gaming table, a full-size Ms. Pac-Man videogame, and doors that open to outdoor living area and expansive pool. Among the delightful touches in this room are the live-edge stools cut from cedar trees that were on the property when the homeowners purchased it.

“We use every single bit of our space, and even though we have an open concept, our team has given us functional and cozy spaces that we live in every day,” said the homeowner. “Our home is perfect for the way we live, whether it’s day-today, as we entertain, or as we relax as a family.”

Rest and relaxation come easy in the primary suite. The spa-like primary bath boasts a unique barrel-vaulted ceiling, painted the most serene green to highlight the architectural detail. And the color story is the perfect backdrop for a delicate sea inspired chandelier.

Upstairs,

the two boys have their own retreat, complete with a common area and two personalized bedroom suites. Window seats double as pullout beds for fun sleepovers or family visits, and storage for games and activities abounds. And each boy’s personality shines through with the elements chosen for each room, the design team giving careful consideration to unique interests while harmonizing the feel of the spaces with the rest of the home.

This home definitely has a consistency and fluidity that can be felt from one room to the next. Traditional elements blend with contemporary pieces; masculine touches compliment feminine details; there is balance and flow, both inside and out.

“This home’s interior is a perfect example of refined contemporary style,” said Ryan Anderson, builder. “The traditional architecture has European influences woven in, and yet it fits perfectly into the landscape of this sought-after East Memphis lot. David Anderson (architect) and Selena (designer) did a fantastic job creating and highlighting the intricate architectural detailing of this stately home.”

Covid-era build or not, this home is a stunner; but there is something to be said for the fact that the world mandated an extra amount of patience for this project. This beautiful family home took just a little bit more care. A little bit more anticipation. And a little bit more intentionality. And it shows.

EXPERIENCE SPAIN

TEXT AND PHOTOS

WHERE VIBRANT CULTURE MEETS TIMELESS HISTORY

As our incredible journey, which commenced in Rome and will culminate in Barcelona, nears its conclusion, we'd love to spotlight our final stops in the beautiful Balearic Islands: Mahón and Menorca as well as Barcelona.

The Balearic Islands are a chain of islands off Spain's eastern Mediterranean coast. They are known for their breathtaking landscapes, vibrant culture, and rich history.

Mallorca and Menorca in particular are celebrated for their stunning coastlines, charming villages, and historical landmarks. With their perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and a variety of activities, the Balearic Islands are a premier destination for travelers seeking both relaxation and adventure.

Menorca, especially around Mahon, is a gem with loads to do. Here you can take a boat tour around Mahon Harbour which is one of the biggest natural harbours on the planet, or just take a stroll along the waterfront and hit up the cafés and restaurants for some tasty local eats.

If you are a history buff, you will love Fort Marlborough, an 18th-century British fort, and the grand Plaza de España with its Town Hall and Church of Santa Maria.

If you love nature, be sure and check out the beautiful Cala Mesquida beach and the Parc Natural de s'Albufera des Grau. These rugged wetlands of Menorca’s stunning Parc Natural de s'Albufera des Grau was a once-threatened wilderness now thriving as a protected conservation area. The crown jewel of this natural gem is its freshwater lagoon, a sanctuary for over 100 species of wild birds. Here you encounter majestic eagles soaring above, tortoises ambling across your path, and horses grazing serenely.

When it comes to local culture, make sure to visit the Museo de Menorca for a deep dive into the island's rich history and heritage. And even more exciting, the group cruise coincides with the vibrant Festes de Gràcia festival, a lively celebration filled with colorful parades and festive fun.

If you are looking for some unique shopping, hit up the Mercat des Claustre for gourmet treats and crafts. And of course, try the fresh seafood at local spots, especially the caldereta de langosta (lobster stew).

Now, onto Barcelona! On this day you will be disembarking from the ship. But, with going this far, stay in Barcelona for a few days! Who knows if you will have the opportunity to go back!

HERE’S WHY:

Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia and is known for its stunning architecture, particularly the work of Antoni Gaudí, Barcelona’s most famous Modernist Architect who left his mark all over the city and has been given UNESCO World Heritage status. Some of his iconic works include Sagrada Familia, Park Güell, and houses such as Casa Batlló. Barcelona offers a rich tapestry of experiences for every traveler.

From the marveling of the awe-inspiring La Sagrada Família, this basilica has been under construction since 1882, stands as a testament to

Gaudí's genius and the city’s dedication to preserving its cultural heritage. You can take a tour of the basilica, but we would recommend booking it ahead of time. Park Güell is a public park with colorful mosaics, serpentine benches, and panoramic views of the city designed by Gaudi.

The Gothic Quarter is known for its medieval streets and historic buildings and transports visitors back in time. The Barcelona Cathedral, located in the heart of this quarter, is a stunning example of Gothic architecture and offers a peaceful respite from the bustling city.

Nestled in the heart of Barcelona's El Born district, The Picasso Museum is a treasure trove of over 4,000 works by the legendary artist, Pablo Picasso. A visit to The Picasso Museum not only showcases the genius of one of the 20th century's most influential artists but also immerses visitors in the rich cultural tapestry of Barcelona.

The city is home to so many museums and galleries, filled with works by wonderful artists and impressive exhibits from all over the world. You can find everything from Egyptian sarcophagi to sailing boats, wax models to Roman ruins and everything in between in Barcelona museums around the city.

Barcelona also has a rich cultural scene, including theatres, music, and dance performances as well as lots of street art and sculptures to enjoy too.

Their Catalan Culture is unique and celebrated at festivals and events with traditional dance performances of the sardana, and impressive human towers known as castells which are incredible to watch.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES AND THE BEACHES:

No visit to Barcelona is complete without spending some time at Barceloneta Beach. This lively beach is perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and enjoying fresh seafood at the many beachside restaurants. For those who prefer a bit of adventure, Montjuïc Hill offers a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, cable car rides, and exploring attractions like the Magic Fountain and the Olympic Stadium. Cycling and walking tours as well as bike rentals are available.

FOOD AND CUISINE

Barcelona is also renowned for its delicious food, especially its tapas and seafood. It is a culinary scene that is as diverse as its architecture. The Tapas are small savory dishes and are a staple of Catalan cuisine and can be enjoyed at numerous bars throughout the city. They are often served as appetizers or snacks, but they can also be combined to create a full meal.

Typical tapas in Barcelona include:

• Patatas Bravas: Fried potatoes topped with a spicy tomato sauce and aioli.

• Pan con Tomate: Toasted bread rubbed with ripe tomatoes, olive oil, and garlic, often served with cured ham.

• Croquetas: Deep-fried croquettes filled with creamy béchamel and various ingredients like ham, chicken, or mushrooms.

• Calamares a la Romana: Lightly battered and fried squid rings, often served with lemon and aioli.

• Gambas al Ajillo: Shrimp sautéed in olive oil with garlic and chili.

• Jamón Ibérico: Thinly sliced Iberian ham, a prized delicacy often served on its own or with bread.

Tapas are more than just food; they are an

essential part of the social fabric of Barcelona. Locals and visitors alike gather in bustling tapas bars and restaurants, enjoying these small plates with drinks, good company, and lively conversation.

If you are interested in taking a cooking class, there is a popular culinary school located in the heart of the city. The school is centrally located on La Rambla, making it easily accessible for tourists. Many classes begin with a guided tour of the famous La Boqueria Market. Then, under the guidance of professional chefs, participants prepare a variety of traditional Spanish dishes. The menu often includes classics like paella, tapas, and Catalan desserts. The class also includes wine pairing, where participants learn about and taste different Spanish wines that compliment the dishes they are preparing. After cooking, participants enjoy the meal they’ve prepared together, creating a communal and enjoyable dining experience. You will also receive a booklet with the recipes you’ve cooked, allowing you to recreate the dishes at home. It’s recommended to book in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons.

This cooking class not only teaches you how to prepare delicious Spanish dishes but also offers an immersive cultural experience, making it a memorable highlight of any trip to Barcelona.

THE NIGHTLIFE AND ENTERTAINMENT:

As the sun sets, Barcelona’s vibrant nightlife comes to life. Flamenco shows, with their passionate performances, can be found in various venues across the city. The city also hosts numerous festivals throughout the year, such as La Mercè in September and Sant Jordi in April, offering a glimpse into the local culture and traditions.

GETTING AROUND:

Getting around Barcelona is easy thanks to its efficient public transportation system, which includes buses, trams, and an extensive metro network. Biking is also a popular option, with many rental services available. Accommodation options range from luxurious hotels to budget-friendly hostels, catering to all types of travelers.

The airport is only about 30–35 minutes from the city’s center. Be sure and allow yourself plenty of time — going home and especially on a Sunday or a fiesta (because of reduced transport services).

It’s difficult to get lost in much of Barcelona city because of the grid-like layout of the streets and the numerous metro stations. So, go exploring by foot as much as possible — you’ll discover much more interesting stuff that way.

Some of the best time to travel to Barcelona is in the autumn from September to November where the weather is cooler than in the summer ranging from 59°F to 77°F which is ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities. Plus, it is less crowded making it easier to explore all the popular sites. It is also Harvest Season which is a great time to enjoy local wines and food festivals.

We hope you have enjoyed going on our journey through Italy and Spain and taking a trip more off the beaten Path! We would like to invite you to go along with us as we embark on Explora II on a Mediterranean cruise on September 15 – 22, 2025. Let Food Be Thy Medicine: Nourishing Body and Mind

~ HIPPOCRATES, 460-370 BC

In an era where medical advancements have reached remarkable heights, the role of food in maintaining our health and well-being is more significant than ever. Despite our modern lifestyle's challenges, the power of wholesome, nourishing foods remains a cornerstone of our ability to thrive and live a life of wellness. The foods we choose to eat daily can profoundly impact our health, helping to protect against illness and promote overall vitality.

For over three decades, those of the ilk of Dr. Dean Ornish, Dr. Daniel Amen, Dr. Mark Hyman and Dr. Steve Gundry’s research has demonstrated the remarkable effects that lifestyle changes—particularly diet—can have on our health. By embracing a diet rich in whole, plant-based foods, along with regular physical activity and mindfulness practices, we can support our bodies in ways that foster long-term wellness and even reverse many chronic conditions such as cancer, autoimmune disease, and general inflammation.

THE NOURISHING POWER OF WHOLE FOODS

Summer is a season of abundance, offering a perfect opportunity to enrich our diets with fresh, nutrient-dense produce. Farmer’s markets are brimming with vibrant fruits and vegetables, each providing a unique array of vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals that contribute to our overall health. By choosing locally grown, seasonal produce, we not only nourish ourselves but also support our communities and the environment.

Whole foods—fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes—are naturally rich in nutrients that help maintain our body’s optimal function. These foods are the building blocks of a healthy diet, offering everything from the antioxidants that protect our cells to the fiber that supports digestion. Incorporating a variety of these foods into our meals

helps ensure we receive the full spectrum of nutrients needed for good health.

EMBRACING THE SWEETNESS OF NATURE

While we often associate summer with indulgent treats, it's a season that also offers a wealth of naturally sweet, nutrient-rich options. Fresh berries, melons, and stone fruits are not only delicious but also packed with beneficial compounds that support our health. For instance, berries are rich in antioxidants like vitamin C and flavonoids, which play a key role in protecting our cells from oxidative stress and promoting overall wellness.

Natural sugars found in fruits come alongside a host of other nutrients, including fiber, vitamins, and minerals. These elements work together to provide sustained energy and support the body’s natural processes. Embracing these naturally sweet options allows us to enjoy the best of what summer has to offer while nourishing our bodies.

FOOD AS MEDICINE: A CLOSER LOOK AT HEALING FOODS

The concept of using food as medicine is beautifully illustrated in the field of nutrition science, particularly in the area of cancer prevention and recovery. In her book Healing Smoothies, Danielle Chace, MSc CN, explores the ways in which specific foods can support the body during challenging times, offering recipes designed to nourish and protect.

Here are a few examples of the healing properties of foods highlighted in Healing Smoothies:

• Apples: A daily apple provides a variety of phytochemicals, including quercetin, known for supporting cellular health and reducing the risk of certain diseases.

• Banana Peels: Often overlooked, banana peels are rich in antioxidant phenolics that can support the body’s defenses and overall health.

• Citrus Peel Oil: The natural oils found in citrus peels contain nutrients like tangeretin, which have been shown to support healthy cell function.

A HEALING RECIPE: BERRY AND ROSEMARY HEALER

One of the standout recipes from Healing Smoothies is the Berry and Rosemary Healer. This smoothie not only delights the taste buds but also offers a potent combination of nourishing ingredients that support overall health and well-being.

Ingredients:

• 1 cup orange juice

• ½ cup pomegranate seeds

• ½ cup frozen wild blueberries

• ½ cup frozen blackberries

• 2 tablespoons chia seeds

• 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary

Instructions: Combine all ingredients in a high-power blender or food processor and blend until smooth. Drink immediately. This recipe serves two and provides a refreshing, antioxidant-rich drink that supports the body's natural defenses.

EMBRACING A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO HEALTH

The notion that food can be our medicine is timeless, offering a simple yet profound way to care for our bodies and minds. By choosing foods that are naturally rich in nutrients, we empower ourselves to live healthier, more vibrant lives. This summer, take the opportunity to explore the abundant, colorful produce available and experiment with new recipes that celebrate the healing power of food.

As Hippocrates wisely advised, "Let food be thy medicine." By embracing this philosophy, we can create a foundation for a healthy, joyful life, where each meal is an opportunity to nourish our bodies, protect our health, and savor the richness of nature's bounty.

This fundraiser offers the best of upscale home, decorative items and furniture consignments eagerly anticipated by the community each year. It provides a wide opportunity for consignors and for shoppers all at very reasonable prices while also raising money for the LP Grantees!

This year is the 38th Year of the Les Passees Stock Exchange and it will be held from September 6th –October 31st with a Preview Party of September 5th. The hours are Tuesday – Saturday 10am – 4pm and Sundays 1pm – 4pm. The Stock Exchange is located at 5258 Summer Avenue, Memphis, thanks to a generous donation from Belz Enterprises.
