A trip to the Texas Hill Country inspired the concept behind Legends, Albertine
Company’s contribution to the Fall 2025 Vesta Home Show. City Hill Design principal designer Amy Mobley says she was so taken with the region’s look and feel, she wanted to translate it into a Mid South showplace. She and her sister/business partner Katie Norrid were thrilled to get the chance to do just that as part of the annual home show sponsored by the West Tennessee Home Builders Association. The design duo had recently completed a project with Albertine and local architecture powerhouse LRK, so when Philip Albertine offered the opportunity to team up again on the show home, it felt right. “We all work really well together. And to get architects of that caliber, and a super custom builder, we were all in,” says Norrid. “We knew that they would only put their best foot forward.” That best effort paid off. Legends won the People’s Choice, Best Interiors, Best Architecture and Best First Impression awards for the show, located in Collierville’s Hidden Creek development. The designers knew the home’s laid-back elegance was a hit with show goers even before the top honors were announced. Says Norrid, “A lot of times people would start [the Vesta tour] with us, and they’d come back and end with us, as well, walking through it twice.” That degree of appeal didn’t happen by chance. Collaboration between architects, contractors, craftsmen and designers produced the stellar finished product that won the hearts of Vesta attendees. October 2026 • athomemms.com | 29

Mobley
and Norrid agree that a show home presents an ideal chance to stretch limits and incorporate features that may be new or unexpected. That concept is evident from the initial glance at Legends’ exterior. Harkening back to that Texas Hill Country visit, Mobley wanted to emulate the region’s iconic plaster structures. Albertine achieved that by applying a mortar wash over brick, a technique not often found in the Mid South. Thoughtful architectural details like repeated notched arches on the covered front porch, paired with a color palette that blends a soft neutral with a subdued olive green, create an inviting ambiance from first glance. Just inside the mahogany front door all notions that this house is anything but legendary are gone. The entryway features Texas cream stone, a staircase with a completely custom curved wall on one side and an equally unique detail on the other. Inspired by a similar one in a Scottsdale, AZ, hotel, the leather-wrapped handrail is one-of-a-kind. The leather had to be ordered from Sweden. Then there was the issue of how the piece was going to be assembled. Luckily, Albertine’s operations manager Wes Pennel came to the rescue. “He was on the job site one day and he said, ‘In my previous life I wrapped handlebars at a bike shop. I think I can do it,’” Mobley recalls. The foyer leads to the dining room, where the furnishings include a piece that influenced the color palette for the entire project. The banquette’s Schumacher Annika Floral Tapestry upholstery includes an array of tones, including the moody, rich brown City Hill chose for the room’s walls and ceiling. Several saturated colors appear throughout the home: one typical choice was intentionally omitted. “In this house, there is not a single white paint. Not one, even on a ceiling,” Mobley says. “During the show, people were saying how homey and warm the house felt, but they couldn’t figure out just why. We were like, ‘There’s no white!’” Original art graces the dining room, and the entire home, making a walk through feel a bit like a visit to a gallery. Norrid and Mobley reached out to dozens of local and regional artists, asking them to submit works to become part of the decor for the Vesta show. The assignment was to depict whatever the term “legendary” meant to the artist. The creative community embraced the concept. “We literally ran out of wall space to hang them,” says Norrid. 30 | At Home Memphis & Mid South • October 2026

Place
of pride above the living room mantel went to the ultimate Memphis legend, painted by a Memphis artist. Megan Hurdle’s depiction of Elvis is worthy of rock ‘n’ roll royalty. The image hangs over a fireplace surround that also got a custom treatment from the professionals at Christie Cut Stone. To achieve the antiqued patina the designers wanted the cottonwood limestone to have, installers applied an unexpected, yet effective, stain. “Coffee,” laughs Mobley. “They literally poured Folger’s on it.” The living area opens into the kitchen, where a stone installation makes a legendary statement. Mobley calls the oversized slab of natural Fusion quartzite that covers the vent hood and spans to the ceiling “the hero of the room.” Soft neutral cabinetry surrounds the stunning focal point, allowing the color and movement of the stone to take center stage. Off to the right end of the wall a custom metal cabinet brings a bit of unexpected appeal. “We wanted it to feel like you had a hutch, and brought it into the kitchen, and it magically fit there,” Mobley says. For the show it was filled with antique, patinaed copper and silver, creating a juxtaposition of vintage and transitional. In the adjoining breakfast area, the design takes another turn away from the usually seen. The designers envisioned a twist on color drenching, covering all the walls and ceiling with rich wood paneling rather than paint. Layered with neutral drapes, a bold geometric rug and an oversized linen orb chandelier, the space feels warm and cozy. Local artist Drew Barham, the designers’ brother, created the art installation here, a surge of laminated butterflies on a pastel background. October 2026 • athomemms.com | 33

Utilitarian
parts of a home, once neglected designwise, have come into their own as of late, and the Legend’s scullery is a shining example. One might go so far as to say it’s “legendary.” Says Mobley, “We knew this was going to be a big moment, and we decided on this wallpaper when we pulled fabrics for the project at the very start.” The House of Hackney Plantasia print brought to mind the illustrations in a classic children’s book. “It reminds me of ‘Where the Wild Things Are.’ In my mind as a child, this is what it was. I have a special affection for this paper,” she adds. Sherwin Williams Carnelian paint, paired with Moulin Rouge quartzite countertops that are wildly colorful and totally appropriate complete the scullery’s dramatic look. Showstopping design is the name of the game again in the upstairs media room. Aiming to pay homage to sports in the space, the designers gave vague instructions to Kate Roebuck, the artist who chose the media room walls as the spot for which she wanted to provide paintings. She came through with a triptych of grand-scale Grecian urns, each honoring an Olympic sport. The ode to athletics continues on the adjoining wall, where a collection of deflated basketballs makes an unconventional art installation. The furnishings are every bit as epic as the artwork. Mobley first saw the huge 70s-era Thayer Coggin curved sectional online on a Birmingham antique shop’s website. Immediately obsessed with it, she was just a bit late; the treasure had already sold. Undaunted, she eventually found another in Chattanooga, had it shipped and reupholstered, and placed it in its perfect setting. Each of the home’s bedrooms and en suite baths, as well as the downstairs powder room, bears the same innovative design as the house’s more public spaces. Highlights in the spacious primary bedroom include an interesting beamed and arched ceiling detail and a sassy Marilyn Monroe painting by Leslie Barron. The primary bath embraces the contemporary, anchored by a pretty fluted tub standing in a breathtaking arched alcove swathed in the darkest brown. Nashville artist Sarah Ella Cole’s interpretation of legendary landmark Stonehenge hangs above. As is customary in Vesta show homes, Mobley and Norrid designed one upstairs bedroom with a girl in mind, and one with a boy. Pretty in a soft, mauvish pink, the girl’s room is subtly feminine. A cloth billow behind the headboard brings a classic canopy bed to mind in an updated style. The bed upholstered in purple linen adds an element of fun, while a pair of Made Goods striped nightstands bring a bit of whimsey. The City Hill team went all in with pink Zellige tiles from Morocco in the bathroom tub surround. The handmade materials’ natural imperfections add an extra punch of interest to the vibrant design. "We call this the camp room,” says Norrid of the boy’s bedroom. A different take
on accommodating a crowd, the space features three classic Jenny Lind beds in a row. The designer continues, “So many houses now have bunk rooms, and we love a bunk room, but we thought we’d show something else here. It’s perfect for triplets, sleep overs, or when the grandkids come!” Grownup visitors will find a chic haven in the downstairs guest room. Mobley explains, “We wanted it to feel like the inside of a jewelry box so we did these tiny stripes. Striped wallpaper, ceiling, everything. And the drapes match.” Completing the look is the legendary Roger Moore as James Bond in Peter Ruck’s iconic photograph “Shaken Not Stirred.” Norrid says the biggest compliment she and her sister received about their Vesta home was the overwhelming positive feedback. “It spanned generations and demographics. Everybody, young to old, liked it.” Experts from beyond the Mid South took notice, too. City Hill has been chosen to take part in the prestigious Kips Bay Decorator Show House in Dallas. Mobley and Norrid will design the primary bedroom in this year’s home, a 25,000-square-foot French Renaissance-style estate in the Turtle Creek neighborhood. The show house will be open Nov. 14-Dec. 6. O c tob er 2026 • a thomemms. c om | 3 7

Stephenie Ward’s kitchen renovation was a long time coming. Architect Charles Shipp drew plans to enlarge
the galley kitchen in her East Memphis home years ago, but the project was back-burnered several times due to illness in the family and then the COVID pandemic. She says, “Even though we had to wait, I could envision it. We even got some of the materials along the way. When I finally got to do what I wanted to do, I was so excited!” Her enthusiasm was warranted in the end; the finished product is a beautiful and spacious kitchen with the unique and personal look and the features Stephenie had imagined for so long. Any remodel of an existing home presents challenges, and this one was no different. Stephenie and her husband Anthony wanted to keep the kitchen’s travertine tile floor, and with good reason. The stone extends past the kitchen into a bar and pantry area and on through a large family room at the back of the house. Incorporating the existing flooring into Stephenie’s vision for her new kitchen would require a talented designer. Luckily, the Wards found one, thanks to a referral from another professional. Stephenie recalls, “I interviewed a few designers. One of them said, ‘I can’t figure out how to integrate the stone, but I think Cindy McCord could.’” Cindy McCord did indeed. The veteran designer created a plan that marries seamlessly the existing and new. Wilson Baird of FG3 Construction carried out the renovation, translating McCord’s concept to reality. Colors were important to the family that owns paint retailer Farrell-Calhoun. The company’s Zea Flour, a warm, creamy white, makes the perfect base for the project. For uniformity, McCord used it in different sheens on the ceiling, walls, trim and custom cabinetry built by BylerCraft in Hardeman County. Taj Mahal quartzite countertops feature subtle movement in both warm and cool tones, completing the backdrop on which other features shine. O c tob er 2026 • a thomemms. c om | 4 1
DESIGN
And shine they do, literally. Stephenie loves copper. McCord noticed that on her initial visit to the home,
when she noticed a large copper bowl displayed in the kitchen. The piece became McCord’s inspiration for the room’s accents, and her client loved the idea. “I didn’t want what everyone else did. I wanted something different,” says Stephenie. The centerpiece is a gracefully curved copper vent hood fabricated locally by Metalaire Louver. In contrast with current trends that lean toward unlacquered metals which patina over time, Stephenie asked that the piece be lacquered to retain its brilliance. Copper cabinet hardware, an Italian tile backsplash, and the upholstery fabric on the trio of barstools at the island reprise the russet shade. Small in area, but hugely important to Stephenie, is the kitchen’s beverage center. Nestled above in mirrorfront wall cabinets is her collection of mugs acquired during travels all over the world. Perfectly placed over the counter, a faucet makes filling the pot for her morning coffee a breeze. Drawers and a small refrigerator below hold all the other necessary accoutrements for easy beverage prep. When the Wards have a different type of drink in mind, they head to their handsome wet bar, also spiffed up by McCord during the renovation. Rich, dark wood base cabinets are topped with Revolux countertops in Calacatta Macchia Vecchia Lux. Glass-shelved open cabinets above show off the dramatic veining of the stone, which McCord also chose for the back wall. More copper accents tie the bar area to the adjoining kitchen.
4 2 | At Home Memphis & Mid South • O c tob er 2026
DESIGN
The project’s scope reached farther than just the kitchen, revamping the other areas including the front
entry, the library and a breakfast room just off the kitchen, a spot where one of Stephenie’s goals was to soften the countless rectangular forms in the house by adding curves. Inspired by the interlocking curved mullions on the doors of a china cabinet inherited from her mother, she had the artisans at BylerCraft construct wall cabinets in a similar style. The design not only adds gentle angles, it provides a perfect place to display part of her extensive porcelain plate collection. Custom monogrammed knobs add an extra touch of elegance, as do a white marble countertop and ogee-shaped backsplash. McCord chose Farrell-Calhoun Fleeting Daylight, a moody blue with gray undertones, for the cabinets. Subtle terra cotta hues in the rug and chair cushions speak to the kitchen’s copper pieces. Around the family’s antique cabriole-leg dining table, six French country ladderback chairs show off a new coat of paint in a shade just a bit lighter than the cabinets. The blue-and-warm-wood combination continues in the new powder room off the home’s entryway. Quadrille Palm Garden paper lines the walls. Its large-scale pattern feels just right in the petite space, as does the sophisticated walnut vanity with bamboo accents and marble top. Despite the delay, the Wards are pleased with the way the project turned out. The renovated home Stephenie spent years envisioning is a happy reality now, thanks to patience and a serendipitous partnership with a skilled designer. O c tob er 2026 • a thomemms. c om | 4 3

There are destinations you visit, and then there are destinations you feel. Scotland gives you all the feels. Perhaps it is the sight of an ancient castle rising above a historic city, the mist drifting across a Highland glen or the endless green landscape unfolding outside your window. Maybe it is the sound of bagpipes along a cobblestone street, the warmth of a neighborhood pub or that first glimpse of a rugged coastline where mountains tumble toward the sea. Scotland has a way of making you feel as though you have stepped into another time—one filled with kings and queens, clans and castles, legends and landscapes that seem almost too beautiful to be real. And while Scotland may look small on a map, deciding what to see can be surprisingly difficult. Edinburgh or the Highlands? Castles or whisky distilleries? Loch Ness or the Isle of Skye? A scenic train journey or a drive through the countryside? The best answer may simply be that you don’t have to choose. A well-planned journey through Scotland can give you a little of everything.
BEGIN IN EDINBURGH For many travelers, the perfect introduction to Scotland begins in Edinburgh, where history is not tucked away inside museums; it surrounds you. At the heart of the city is the famous Royal Mile, stretching through Edinburgh’s atmospheric Old Town from Edinburgh Castle toward the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Historic stone buildings, narrow passageways known as closes, shops, cafes and pubs create a setting that feels unmistakably Scottish. Towering over the city from Castle Rock is Edinburgh Castle, one of Scotland’s most recognizable landmarks. Inside, centuries of royal history come alive alongside the country ’s 5 2 | At Home Memphis & Mid South • O c tob er 2026
Crown Jewels and the famous Stone of Destiny. But Edinburgh is a city worth experiencing slowly. Wander beyond the main attractions, stop for afternoon tea, visit a traditional pub or climb Arthur ’s Seat for sweeping views across the city. During August, Edinburgh comes alive with festivals and performances. The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, staged against the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle, is one of Scotland’s most memorable annual events and one that requires advance planning.
A DETOUR TO ST ANDREWS From Edinburgh, consider visiting St Andrews, particularly if you love golf, history or picturesque coastal towns. Known as the birthplace of golf, St. Andrews is a bucket-list destination for golfers, but you do not have to play to appreciate the destination. Walk alongside the famous Old Course, explore medieval ruins or enjoy the charming streets and views of the North Sea. Then it is time to leave the cities behind.
INTO THE SCOT TISH HIGHLANDS There is a moment when traveling through Scotland that the landscape begins to change. Buildings become fewer, mountains grow taller and the road disappears into deep valleys, shimmering lochs and rolling green hills. Welcome to the Scottish Highlands. One of the most spectacular areas is Glencoe, a dramatic valley surrounded by towering mountains and a haunting history that includes the infamous massacre of 1692. This is not a place to rush through. Stop at the viewpoints. Take a walk. Enjoy the silence. Sometimes the most memorable moments happen when you pull over beside a Highland road and realize there is nothing around you but mountains, water and sky.

LOCH NESS AND THE HIGHLANDS Continue north to another legendary location: Loch Ness. Whether or not you believe in its mysterious resident, affectionately known as Nessie, there is something intriguing about the dark waters of this famous loch. A boat cruise is a wonderful way to experience it, particularly when combined with the ruins 5 4 | At Home Memphis & Mid South • O c tob er 2026

of Urquhart Castle along the shoreline. Nearby Inverness, often considered the capital of the Highlands, makes a convenient base. History lovers may also want to visit Culloden Battlefield, site of the final Jacobite rising in 1746.
THE MAGIC OF THE ISLE OF SKYE If there is one place that captures everything travelers imagine Scotland to be, it may be the Isle of Skye. Connected to the mainland by bridge, Skye feels wonderfully remote. Jagged mountains, waterfalls, sea cliffs and winding roads create scenery that changes around every corner. Visit colorful Portree, photograph the Old Man of Storr, explore the otherworldly Quiraing , or see the crystal-clear waters of the Fairy Pools. But Skye is not simply about checking attractions off a list. Part of its appeal is the journey itself. You may stop because sheep have wandered onto the road, pull over to photograph an unexpected waterfall or watch clouds roll across the mountains as the landscape changes from sunshine to mist and back again. This is a place where taking a little extra time makes all the difference.

CASTLES, HISTORY AND A LIT TLE LUXURY It sometimes seems impossible to travel very far in Scotland without encountering a castle. One of the most photographed is Eilean Donan Castle, perched where three sea lochs meet. Stirling Castle played an important role in Scotland’s royal history, while Balmoral Castle has long been associated with the British royal family. For a little extra romance, consider spending a night or two in a castle or historic country-house hotel. Imagine ending the day beside a fireplace and waking to views of the Scottish countryside. Sometimes where you stay becomes as memorable as what you see.
S C O T L A N D BY R A I L Not every great Scottish journey requires getting behind the wheel. The famous West Highland Line travels through mountains, moors and remote landscapes toward Scotland’s west coast. Along the way is the magnificent Glenfinnan Viaduct, made famous by the Harry Potter films. The seasonal Jacobite steam train travels part of this spectacular route between Fort William and Mallaig. Watching the Highlands unfold outside your window behind a steam locomotive feels wonderfully nostalgic. For a more indulgent experience, see Scotland from a luxury train, where elegant accommodations, fine dining and excursions make the journey part of the vacation.
A TA S T E O F S C O T L A N D Scotland’s scenery may initially capture your attention, but its food and drink are equally memorable. Traditional dishes such as haggis, neeps and tatties, Scottish salmon, fresh seafood and hearty soups appear on menus throughout the country. And then, of course, there is whisky. Each of Scotland’s whisky-producing regions has its own traditions. A distillery visit offers a chance to learn about the craftsmanship behind the country ’s national drink and, naturally, enjoy a tasting. Even if whisky is not your preference, a tour offers another connection to Scotland’s history and culture.
F U N FA C T: T H E S O U N D O F S C O T L A N D Scotland’s influence reaches beyond castles, whisky and breathtaking landscapes; it has also made its mark on music. Scottish-born stars include Susan Boyle, pop favorite Sheena Easton, Glasgow rock band Simple Minds and hard-rock group Nazareth, formed in Dunfermline and famous for "Love Hurts". Although Rod Stewart was born in London, his Scottish roots run deep through his Edinburgh-native father, and he has proudly celebrated that heritage throughout his life. From traditional bagpipes to rock and pop, Scotland has certainly given the world plenty of great music. 5 6 | At Home Memphis & Mid South • O c tob er 2026

W H E N S H O U L D YO U V I S I T ? There is no single perfect time to visit Scotland. Spring , particularly April and May, can bring longer days and fewer visitors. Summer offers the most daylight hours and a variety of festivals, although it is also the busiest season. Early fall brings changing colors, cooler temperatures and a quieter atmosphere. Whatever month you choose, Scottish weather can be unpredictable. Layers, comfortable walking shoes and a waterproof jacket are essentials. And remember, Scotland’s mist and clouds are part of what makes its mountains, castles and lochs so dramatic.
H O W S H O U L D YO U E X P L O R E SCOTLAND? Renting a car offers freedom, particularly in the Highlands and on Skye, but remember that motorists drive on the left and many rural roads are narrow. For those who would rather enjoy the scenery, a private driver or guided tour can be an excellent alternative. Rail journeys also provide a relaxing way to experience the countryside. The perfect itinerary may combine several options— exploring Edinburgh on foot, traveling by train and touring the Highlands with a guide or private driver. It is important to resist the temptation to see everything. Scotland rewards travelers who slow down. Leave time for the unexpected viewpoint, the tiny village you had not planned to visit, the pub you discover along the way or the castle that was not on your itinerary. Those often become the stories you remember most.

Memphis Habitat Pairs ContempoRAry Home Designs with AffordabLE Homeownership BY JESSICA HORD | PHOTOS COURTESY OF MEMPHIS HABITAT For Habitat for Humanity of Greater Memphis, the design of its homes isn’t just about curb appeal. It’s about affordability and helping first-time homebuyers gain an asset to build equity. Memphis Habitat has helped nearly 650 aspiring homebuyers pursue affordable homeownership since 1983. Today, the organization continues that work through affordable mortgages, new homes and financial education designed to help local families put down roots and invest in their futures. AFFORDABLE MORTGAGES & HOMEBUYER EDUCATION Memphis Habitat’s longest-standing program has always focused on homeownership via affordable 30-year mortgages with zero added interest. Homebuyers qualify for the program based on their need for affordable housing, income, credit history and other requirements. Before closing, they contribute toward closing costs, build an emergency fund, complete partnership hours and participate in 13 to 14 weeks of homebuyer education. Children of Habitat homebuyers are also invited to companion classes created especially for them. UPDATED HOMES DESIGNED FOR TODAY AND TOMORROW Memphis Habitat offers several updated house plans, including one- and two-story detached homes and contemporary two-story semi-attached homes. Three-, fourand five-bedroom options range from approximately 1,200 to 1,900 square feet. All homes feature two bathrooms and are EcoBUILD certified by Memphis Light, Gas & Water, with energy-efficient features designed to help keep utility costs manageable. 1 02 | At Home Memphis & Mid South • O c tob er 2026
Features and amenities include: Energy-efficient heating and cooling, windows, appliances, shingles and tankless water heaters • Full appliance packages, including refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, washer and dryer • Durable finishes including brick and/or fiber-cement siding, waterproof wood-look SPC flooring, tile tub surrounds and granite countertops • White shaker-style cabinets • Ceiling fans, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and security alarm systems • Sodded and landscaped front and back yards • Custom selections on certain finishes, such as exterior paint, brick and countertops • Zero-step entries, wide hallways and visitable bathroom (with additional modifications based on individual families’ needs) • One-year limited builder warranty For Memphis Habitat COO Lori Humber, the updated designs are about more than aesthetics. “Beyond a new look, our new home designs help support higher appraisals, directly affecting Habitat homebuyers’ ability to build equity. What has not changed is our focus on affordability. Memphis Habitat’s homeownership program provides affordable mortgage opportunities for local families who thought buying a home was out of reach. Habitat’s program helps families put down roots and invest in their futures.” HOW YOU CAN HELP Interested in supporting Memphis Habitat? Visit www. memphishabitat.com to learn more. •
