Welcome to the busy month of May! This month, in particular, is one of the most event-filled of the year. Besides the numerous festivals and outdoor music events, we celebrate our moms and graduates. Some of us will be planning summer vacations or packing kids for camp. Speaking of camps, it seems like yesterday I was packing my children up for camps and Vacation Bible School. This summer, two of my grandchildren will be attending their first day camp and VBS! Those were great days and the time is going so fast. I do not miss packing my kids for college and getting them all moved in. That was torture. For those of you who are new to that phase, prayers for you!

A MUST fit into your hectic May schedule is a visit to the Spring VESTA Home Show! This event is always a treat and the West Tennessee Homebuilders Association has truly taken it to another level. Not only can you tour six magnificent homes, planned, built and designed by the Mid South’s finest, you can also enjoy several fantastic ticketed events. This year’s Spring VESTA is not to be missed. Maybe the best news is that there will be a VESTA encore in 2025— a Holiday show coming this November!

We love and celebrate our moms, graduates, and moms of graduates this May!

BUILT BY KEN GARLAND CUSTOM HOMES | DESIGN BY WAREHOUSE 67

"Wewanted to create a home that would be perfect for someone who really appreciates traditional elements, but craves a space that feels effortless and has an enduring style.” Designer Kim Loudenbeck sums up the goal of her collaboration with builder Ken Garland for this year’s Vesta Home Show.

Located in the new Wilder at Forest Hill development in Germantown, the home dubbed “the Stallion” was conceived by architect Ed Yendrick of Classic Home Designs. Garland previously built the floorplan for his personal home and loved it so much he wanted to share the design with the public.

Rather than labeling the project with a specific style, Loudenbeck says it merges several aesthetics. “It’s a blend between

timeless traditional, English charm and fresh, tailored attention to detail,” says the owner of Warehouse 67. The result is a home with a sophisticated, yet comfortable, lived-in vibe. “I always want people to walk into their space and feel comfortable, like it’s their sanctuary, their refuge and their space that just feels right,” she explains.

The nod to Old World style begins on the exterior, where Garland employed both stone and painted brick treatments. Says Loudenbeck, “The mixed materials immediately let you know you’re going to see play with textures and patterns throughout the home. It’s that stately look that you’d expect in an English home, but updated. The color palette, both outside and in, is cohesive; neutral and muted to create an elevated feel.”

Today's home buyers appreciate fine craftsmanship, she adds, and this home represents artisanlevel handiwork and exemplary attention to detail. Nowhere is this more evident than in the expansive entryway, where impressive elements are visible from floor to ceiling. Installers hand cut tiles to form the unique basketweave pattern on the floor. Geometric pattern play continues up the walls in windowpane millwork. The custom railing up the staircase exemplifies simple elegance. Loudenbeck says it represents balance. “You want to show the beauty of the structure, but not overdo it.” Overhead, a graceful, tripletiered chandelier adds another classic touch.

“The dining room was the launching point for the whole home,” says the designer. Taking into consideration the grandeur of the space, she chose a saturated paint hue to create an inviting and intimate feel. Exposed white oak ceiling beams add to the cozy ambiance, while antique mirror panes lining a niche provide an understated elan. Color and pattern come by way of drapes tailored in Fairbanks fabric from Thibaut. A reproduction of a 1926 original, the textile checks the boxes of three design elements currently trending: color, florals and chinoiserie. Twin beaded chandeliers provide texture and symmetry, scaled perfectly to fill the space above the massive dining table.

Garland continued the focus on diverse textures in the living room, reprising exposed beams, this time painted crisp white and placed on a tongue-and-groove vaulted ceiling. Loudenbeck raves about these and a myriad of other architectural details throughout the space. “This home itself was absolutely stunning even before we put any furnishings in it.” From the angles of the ceiling to the wall of windows to the grand fireplace covered in the same stone used on the home’s exterior, so many pieces work together to create a beautiful environment in the living room.

The furnishings speak to the aura of casual elegance. A hand-knotted rug in traditional Oushak pattern establishes a traditional English feel. Its muted palette sets the tone for upholstered pieces in moody-colored velvets and other rich fabrics. A scallop-shaped chandelier wrapped in rattan brings a hint of the casual and introduces another natural element.

Theliving room opens to the kitchen, where Loudenbeck took the reins to fully customize the layout. She partnered with kitchen specialist Meagan Millican to define the essence of the space and discover ways to push the design envelope while maintaining timeless beauty. “We started with what I call the hearth,” says Loudenbeck, referring to the wide vent hood area above the range. Its graceful arched construction calls to mind classic Tudor architecture. More of the detailed millwork found in the foyer graces the cabinetry, while durable Dekton countertops add the warm, earthy feel of travertine.

The star of the kitchen show, however, is the dining vignette in front of the island, complete with an upholstered banquette that runs the full length. “I love reimagining spaces,” admits the designer. “The kitchen was so expansive we were able to situate the eat-in area in front of the island. Because of that, we could repurpose the area meant as the breakfast nook into a lounge/bar area that is cozy and functional.'

Loudenbeck color drenched the lounge’s cabinets, walls and trim in a moody sage hue to create intimacy. Full-length windows allow views of the stunning screen porch and pool areas that lie just outside.

Honed

marble flooring extends beyond the outdoor room to the hardscaping of the pool surround for a modern and clean effect that blends seamlessly with both the turf and the natural elements of this outdoor retreat. “The landscaping is so perfect. Looking out at it through the expansive windows on the back of the home gives you the feel of being at an oasis or a resort,” Loudenbeck says.

“Ken thought of everything!” she adds, noting the half bath Garland included next to the outdoor kitchen. “He was intentional about the details and quality of construction in every part of the home, thinking through everything that anyone could possibly want and making it happen.”

Even more utilitarian areas like the scullery, pantry and laundry room received the master’s touch from builder, designer and craftsmen. In each space practicality combines with beauty and extra detail. Case in point is the “landing spot” in the laundry area. Where there could have been a nondescript cubby, the trim carpenter created a built-in oak deacon’s bench with a decidedly English flair.

The beautiful vaulted hip ceiling returns in the downstairs primary bedroom, drawing the eye up. “What else could we do here but a fabulous chandelier?” asks Loudenbeck, referring to the stunning beaded quatrefoil fixture. Color comes from the lamps, drapes and custom button-tufted headboard that up the mostly neutral palette’s airy feel.

The attached bath is a study in details, including a double shower with all the bells and whistles behind a wall of glass, and custom-built stained vanities with reeded treatment. The piece de resistance, though, covers the entire wall behind the freestanding soaking tub—an opulent marble mosaic of vines and magnolia blossoms with gold accents. Loudenbeck says the feature became a symbol of the synergy she and Garland shared in their collaboration. “His appreciation for my attention to detail and my appreciation for his craftsmanship and willingness to be as thoughtful as I was have been the best part of this project.”

The pair put the same effort into the home’s three other bedroom suites, starting with the downstairs guest retreat. “We wanted to keep the space neutral, but it needed to have its own character and unique style,” says Loudenbeck. The cherry blossom wallpaper mural caught her eye some time ago, and she kept it in mind, waiting for the perfect room in which to place it.

Aprime example of the juxtaposition between clean-lined modern and traditional elements that are woven throughout the home, the feature wall sets the tone for the suite. The pendant light fixture’s linen covering and geometric angles create a subtle nod to the Eastern feel. The en suite bath features the custom cabinetry and elevated tile treatments found throughout the home.

“Upstairs has the feel of downstairs, but a little more casual and relaxed,” says the designer. At the top of the staircase, a large multipurpose room is ready for fun. Whether the family wants to view a favorite movie, play a game of billiards or host a kids’ sleepover, this space will deliver beautifully. Loudenbeck’s furnishing choices are luxe yet practical. A huge velvet sectional in saturated gray, plus a pair of swivel chairs ensure there’s a spot for the whole crowd to watch the big game. To the side, a dedicated bunk room can sleep four friends comfortably. Whimsical brass animal wall mounts add an eclectic touch.

Keeping in mind that Vesta attendees often come to the show hoping to discover trends and ideas they can use in their own homes, Loudenbeck and her team staged one of the two secondfloor bedrooms with a more feminine mood and the other with masculinity in mind. The girl’s room is a tribute to “grandmillenial” style, with a hand-knotted rug, a gallery wall of vintage art and an eye-catching upholstered bed in orchid velvet. Above it all, a goldtoned chandelier sits like an ethereal crown of butterflies and leaves. Even the fixtures in the attached bath exhibit delicate touches like graceful curves and subtle flower accents.

Large enough to serve as a second master, the other upstairs bedroom features a more earthy feel. “The terracotta of these slipcovered beds was the launching point for this palette,” says Loudenbeck. She merged in blues and neutrals from the home’s overall design scheme, along with rugged woods and a unique cowhide-covered dresser. The antiqued glass on the overhead light fixture reiterates the motif found on the first floor. Stained cabinetry and a handsome marble mosaic shower floor make the adjacent bath anything but cookie-cutter.

Those exceptional details, along with countless others throughout the house, are the result of much thought and collaboration between like-minded professionals who sought to create a unique, elevated home that would function for today’s living while paying homage to time-honored beauty and classic elegance.

Lisbon

Just a 30-minute drive from Lisbon is SINTRA , a picturesque town nestled in the foothills of the Sintra Mountains and renowned for its fairytale-like ambiance, rich cultural heritage, stunning landscapes and architectural wonders. The vibrant Pena Palace, with its technicolor facades and lush gardens, draws visitors yearround. Nearby is the mysterious Quinta da Regaleira estate, known for its hidden tunnels and ornate architecture. Sintra’s hilltop Moorish Castle provides spectacular views and a window into medieval times.

Nature lovers are drawn to Sintra’s breathtaking landscapes, particularly the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. It is a sanctuary for lush mountains and craggy cliffs with picturesque walking trails.

Built as a retreat for writers, Monserrate Palace and Gardens’ botanical diversity and stunning architecture continue to bewitch visitors today. The Sintra National Palace, with its distinctive chimneys and rich tile collection, is a must-see for art lovers. Such a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural splendor makes Sintra an irresistible escape, perfect for a magical day trip from Lisbon.

When in Sintra, be sure and sample the local pastries like travesseiros and queijadas, best enjoyed at quaint cafes such as the iconic Piriquita.

In the southernmost region of Portugal, the ALGARVE lies about 170 miles from Lisbon. The travel distance and time can vary depending on the mode of transportation; the easiest way to get there is by train. The region is renowned for its picturesque coastline, dotted with stunning beaches such as Praia da Marinha, Praia da Rocha and Praia da Dona Ana. The Algarve's Mediterranean climate gives the area long summers and mild winters, making it an ideal yearround destination for sun seekers. It’s also a haven for outdoor adventure enthusiasts, offering surfing, kayaking and hiking opportunities in places like Ria Formosa Natural Park. The region is dotted with charming towns and villages such as Lagos, Tavira and Silves, each showcasing cobblestone streets and historic architecture. Golfers will find paradise here with over 30 world-class courses set against stunning backdrops.

Water parks, zoos and family-friendly resorts make Algarve an excellent choice for family vacations. With a unique blend of natural beauty, adventure and cultural richness, Algarve offers something for every traveler, whether lounging on a beach, indulging in local cuisine or exploring scenic landscapes.

The northern region of the country produces the wines for which Portugal is famous. The breathtaking hillsides and vineyards of the Douro Valley have been the source of the country’s finest varietals since the beginnings of its wine trade, and its UNESCO World Heritage designation makes it even more of a must-visit destination for any true wine lover.

PORTO is approximately 194 miles north of Lisbon. The travel time by car or train is typically around 2.5 to 3 hours. This second largest city in Portugal is located along the hills overlooking Spain’s Douro River estuary. The city dates to the Roman occupation in the fourth century and is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Lagos Algarve

Travelers are captivated by Porto’s charming Ribeira District, where narrow cobblestone streets are lined with colorful buildings and lively cafes. The iconic Dom Luís I Bridge offers spectacular views over the river, connecting Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia. Architectural marvels abound, from the ornate Clerigos Tower to the stunning azulejos adorning São Bento Railway Station, one of the most beautiful train stations in the world.

Porto is famed as the birthplace of port wine, and no visit is complete without a tour of the port cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia. Here visitors can learn about wine production and indulge in tastings. The city’s culinary scene is vibrant, offering everything from traditional Portuguese dishes to contemporary cuisine. Must-try experiences include savoring Francesinha, a hearty sandwich, and enjoying fresh seafood at riverside restaurants.

Porto also boasts a dynamic arts scene, with attractions like the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art and the Casa da Música concert hall. Literature enthusiasts will appreciate a visit to the Livraria Lello, often cited as one of the world’s most beautiful bookstores.

The Douro Valley is known for its terraced vineyards and wine production and is located east of Porto. It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to drive or take a train from Porto.

The Douro Valley is famed for its striking terraced vineyards that cascade down hillsides alongside the meandering Douro River. The picturesque landscape is especially captivating during the harvest season, when the vineyards are lush and vibrant. Travelers often take scenic river cruises to experience the valley’s beauty from the water. The region has several small family-run wineries and guesthouses that can offer a personal touch, allowing visitors to connect with the local culture and people, making every visit memorable.

As one of the world’s oldest wine regions, the Douro Valley is synonymous with wine production, especially the famous port wine. Visitors can tour historic wine estates, enjoy wine tastings and learn about the traditional winemaking processes. Alongside exceptional wines, the local cuisine offers hearty, traditional dishes that reflect the region’s rich culinary heritage. This area is also recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, highlighting its cultural significance and unique landscape shaped by centuries of viticulture.

Beyond wine and scenery, the valley offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventure. Hiking and cycling through vineyard trails provide an active way to explore the stunning terrain. For those who prefer a leisurely pace, boat trips and train journeys through the region offer relaxing experiences with beautiful views.

Azulejos, exquisite ceramic tiles, richly embellish Portugal’s landscapes. These tiles date back to the 15th century, and are more than just stunning decorative art; they tell stories etched in ceramic. Their beautiful blend of intricate patterns and vivid imagery portrays Portugal’s historical narratives, religious tales and everyday life. Whether arrayed across a church façade or lining the walls of a historic train station such as Lisbon’s São Bento, these tiles are a walking canvas of the country’s identity and cultural heritage. With each tile, a piece of Portugal’s past comes to life, offering a glimpse into its storied journey through time.

Numerous shops throughout Portugal, especially in cities like Lisbon and Porto, sell handcrafted azulejos. These

shops often offer unique designs that reflect traditional patterns and modern interpretations. Local craft centers offer workshops where participants can create their own tile, making for a very personal souvenir.

FESTIVALS IN PORTUGAL

Portugal brims with cultural traditions and vibrant festivals that reflect its diverse heritage. Carnival, celebrated in February or March, dazzles in cities like Lisbon and Loulé with parades and costumes. Easter’s significance shines in Braga’s Semana Santa processions. June sees lively celebrations like the Festas de São João in Porto and Santo António in Lisbon, featuring music, dancing and grilled sardines. In August, the Festival do Sudoeste in Zambujeira do Mar is a summer highlight for music lovers. Madeira’s Festa das Flores in spring showcases floral beauty, while September’s Avante! Festival near Lisbon combines music, dance and politics. The biannual Boom Festival near Idanha-a-Nova draws an international crowd with psychedelic music and sustainable themes. These events offer travelers a vibrant taste of Portugal’s rich culture and traditions.

The Saddlewood is the culmination of a fourdecade-long career of fine homebuilding in Memphis. Moore’s experience has led him to develop a building program that focuses on details. The Saddlewood exhibits unsurpassed attention to the fine points, exuding a sense of organization and harmony that is worthy of a truly custom home.

Moore’s Vesta entry radiates the feeling of home from the moment you enter the door off its quintessential Southern wrap-around front porch. The classic open floor plan, featuring five bedrooms, five full baths, a half bath, a study/exercise room, a huge recreation and

media area, and more captures the imagination as you move through the house. In addition to the free-flowing indoor living space, Moore created the perfect outdoor living area with a complete kitchen, stone patio with fireplace and an artistic pool and backyard that affords room to entertain or have a luxury staycation. Moore partnered with Ed Yendrek of Classic Home Designs on the Saddlewood to create a home that blends warm Memphis traditional stylings with the needs and wants of the modern family.

He is pleased to offer the Saddlewood for the 2025 Vesta Home Show.

Raisin Bran Fridge Muffins

When I was growing up in the late 70s, you could always find a few items in our refrigerator: Tab, Fresca and this muffin mix! I recently discovered this recipe again and it brought back so many memories. My grandkids loved them, so the mix will now be a staple in our fridge, next to the Fresca! I have added protein granola and flax seed to them, along with shredded carrots. Topping them with a bit of jelly or apple butter before baking is a great variation, as well.

RAISIN BRAN FRIDGE MUFFINS

1 15-oz. box Raisin Bran

2 cups sugar

5 cups flour

5 tsps. baking soda

2 tsps. salt

4 eggs, beaten

1 cup vegetable oil

1 quart buttermilk

Mix all the ingredients and bake in increments as you wish in a 400˚, preheated oven for 12-14 minutes. Store unused batter in the refrigerator for up to 6 weeks. .

Staying Connected Navigating the Adult Parent-Child Relationship

I am blessed with three adult children and four grandchildren between the ages of infancy and six years. Parenting my children to adulthood has been one of life’s greatest joys, and it went by so fast. Though I saw the shift happening, I wasn’t ready to feel the letting go that came with it. And now, here we are, fully in the season of being the parents of grown children.

Recently, while I was visiting with my daughter, her children asked her a couple of times why she called me “Mom.” It was as if they were just starting to grasp the connection between me and her—not just me to them and her to them. When they asked, it struck me that my baby girl is now the mother to her own babies.

I now share Mother’s Day with my adult daughter who is also a mom. A day that once belonged solely to me is now shared with her as a peer, as is so much of life. That experience—sharing space, letting go, making room—is a thread that runs through every stage of parenting, but when our children become adults it carries a different energy and new kind of life.

Parenting doesn’t stop when children reach a certain age. It shifts. As I have reflected on that I’ve recognized the difference between guiding out of love and holding on out of fear.

That reflection gave me the courage to begin supporting my children as they emerged into adulthood, rather than unintentionally hindering them in an effort to protect or preserve the familiar.

My daughter and I had a pretty easy

relationship until she went to college. Surrounded by new experiences and external influences, she began developing a deeper sense of her own identity. There was a stretch of time when we weren’t getting along very well. One day, with such clarity, she said, “Mom, I think you’re having a hard time with me becoming my own person.”

I immediately felt a sinking sensation in my gut coupled with an overwhelming emotion of guilt. She was right. I was!

My little girl, who had always followed my advice and often shared my perspectives, was changing. And she was doing exactly what I had modeled for her; just what I had taught her to do. But I wasn’t prepared to navigate the space between who she had been with me and who she was becoming on her own.

We often get so wrapped in parenting that our identity in protecting, shaping and teaching our children becomes our badge of honor. And sometimes, as they begin to emerge into a version of their own, we’re still holding on tightly; not out of control, but out of fear that we’ll no longer be needed and will lose our sense of purpose. After all, we’re the ones who worked so hard to keep them safe, to steer them away from failure. We set rules and structure to help them grow up strong and successful. But in doing so, it’s easy to lose sight of something just as important—making space for them to be uniquely themselves.

As our children emerge into adulthood, we may find ourselves feeling unsettled or even threatened by the subtle ways they begin to diverge from the traditions or values

with which we raised them. In an effort to hold on, we offer unsolicited advice, question their choices and sometimes overwhelm them with opinions or judgments. We may even interpret their differences as a kind of rejection.

We forget that the relationship we truly want is built on connection, not control.

As a professional counselor, I realize my experiences are shared by my clients, both those who are parents and those who are adult children. With that bit of clarity, I feel confident writing this piece for both sides of that relationship.

Parenting adult children isn’t about letting go, it’s about shifting how we show up. It’s about walking with them, not in front of them. It’s recognizing that the relationship changes, and so must we. When we honor their independence while staying emotionally available, we create space for deeper connection. And if we’re willing to embrace that shift, we may discover a new season of parenting that is just as meaningful as the ones that came before.

I encourage the adult children reading this to recognize that the shift is hard for your parents. What may feel like resistance comes from a mix of fear and love. Help them by responding with honesty and gentle clarity about how you want to be supported, while also honoring the ways they helped shape the goodness in you.
